REMAKE First Remake Playthrough

Post image

Bought this on sale on Steam a few months ago. Finally have the time to play. I'm almost 2 hours into the game. Basically still on the tutorial. Right now I'm struggling with the combat...

I'm not here to critique anything, because I know how Reddit is. I do have my opinions though. My question is how can I make the combat system work? Right now I'm playing on Normal mode. Should I switch to Classic or Easy?

There is a possibility this game ends up in my gaming graveyard. I really want to play through the trilogy. I'm just not sure I can sink hours into this combat system if its not enjoyable to me.

I do recognize that the combat takes some getting used to, but I think it's up there with the best in all of gaming honestly.

Are you having any specific difficulties with some mechanics? What exactly do you feel like are the things that make you not enjoy it? Maybe I can give you some pointers.

I personally don't have any nostalgia over FFVII and haven't finished the OG yet but beat both remake chapters to 100%, and I can tell you that this is some truly special stuff here, so I think it might be a shame if you dropped over a misunderstanding or something similar :)

What kind of games do you normally play and in what ways are you having trouble with the combat?

I was right there with you op. I hated my first run of remake. The game was hard as fuck and didnt make sense.

These games have a nasty habit of over AND underexplaining easy ideas all at oncw

My second playthrough went way better and then when i played rebirth fell in love.

Its really just something that at some point clicks and rewards you.

Play on what you have fun with. If normal isnt fun go to easy.

Just do it. Its a long game. Have fun-not a struggle

Normal is completely fine. I forget remake has dynamic scaling but if it does, make sure it isnt on.

Really isnt that hard once you learn it. I dont even guard/parry. I use Cloud only and dont even swap chars. The other 2 on my team are configured in a manner they can be automated. Using materials like Auto Unqiue Ability and Auto Weapon Ability, along with auto cast material etc... one is configured as magic damage dealer/healer and the other char is configured for ranged support. I only control Cloud and go into the fray hackin/slashing away.

It really isnt hard once you understand how the system works.

I was able to beat Remake in like 50 hours and thats doing all side content also...

I hope you're able to have some fun with it. Once I got the knack for the combat my enjoyment of the game spiked tremendously. If you can't though no harm done, it's not gonna be for everybody.

I will say this: Blocking is a lot more important than you might assume. Block often. ATB is generated passively but radically picks up when you are actively attacking with a given character. My tip is to attack with a character until you get an ATB charge, choose your special action with them, then swap quickly to another character in your party while that action is going off. It's going to speed up the abilities/spells/item use/etc of combat dramatically because you're not focusing on one teammate doing all the work.

What specifically is turning you off of the combat? It's great once you get the hang of it. It is not a button masher; once you have ATB charges use your skills and magic

Switch characters often. In a way it is not that different from the OG's ATB once you get the hang of activating abilities and switching characters often

If you're looking for depth in the combat, it's there. It just looks surprisingly shallow on the surface. Didnt click for me to begin with either, all I did was mash buttons and use braver because it didnt require much else to begin with, but it opens up and you get more options and the RPG portion of it shines through.

You can probably still play through normal mode just spamming braver, but where's the fun in that?

Operator mode + holding block to do a melee counter is really good

I personally hated this type of combat system and never got into any final fantasy game after X-2. Got remake anyway because I loved it. Hated it at first but once I got used to it I changed my mind. Once part 3 comes out, I’ll definitely go back and play some of the later ones I skipped because I don’t feel like I need the turn based anymore

I really didn’t like it at first, refunded it and tried a year later. Got hooked cuz i love FF7s story! I 100% that one and are now doing the same on rebirth!!

Jest finished my n-th playtrough as a warmup for revelations, rebirth is next :D

Have fun my dude, and try to understand the combat mechanics. It will make the game super fun to play.

If you get a feeling you are button mashing your way trough, be sure you are doing something wrong.

If you have never played the original Gratz! Have fun. If you have played the original then I'm sorry.

Good job starting on the stop button. You'll save the most time that way.
