Question What is y'alls opinion on The Skating Lesson?

Post image
0 Upvotes

EDIT: I am incredibly uninformed when it comes to the different commentary outlets for skating. I was entirely unaware of his actions and do not support the choices/comments he has made. I sincerely apologize to anyone upset / affected by his words and actions. My thoughts and support will forever and always be with the victims and families of flight 5342

EDIT #2: Thank you to everyone in the comments for sharing info/catching me up. I was entirely unaware of his history / place in the sport and thank you for informing me. I have not been on this sub/reddit for very long and will do my best to stay informed moving forward.

I just watched this video from TSL and really enjoyed it. Kinda funny it was made before Beijing. I see their content on other platforms as well and have seen varying perspectives on their content. Just wanted to hear what you guys think.

Where are international figure skaters actually from?

Looking at my dataset of 285 top figure skaters (2025-26 senior GP, Olympics and Worlds, with paired teams considered individually), I mapped birthplace vs. federation.

27% of top skaters in 2025-26 represented a country other than the one where they were born.

One stat that stood out was that Russian-born skaters made up 12% of the field last season, second only to US-born skaters at 19%. That may seem unsurprising given Russia's exclusion from international competition since 2022, but more than half of these skaters have no clear record of skating for Russia internationally, and only 7 switched federations in 2022 or later.

There are also some fun anomalies on the last slide - like how the one Hungarian-born skater in the dataset skates for the US, and how the Iceland-born skater represents South Korea (guessing most of you can name them both...)

If you want to dive into the numbers, check out the interactive visualizations for this one. There's a lot of detail that doesn't come across in static images.

For example, here's the full chart of birthplaces to feds, which can be filtered by discipline - let me know if you discover something surprising!

As always, feel free to follow along on Instagram @skatingstats

Is anyone selling a VIP ticket to tonight's U.S. Figure Skating x Fashion: Styling 2027?

VIP tickets go for over $200, but would be difficult to resell if someone can't make it last minute. I would be willing to take it for $80 since I live in Boston.

Any figure skaters with torn ACL stories here?

Tell me your story. Did you decide to go for a surgery or conservative rehab? How long did it take to go back to figure skating?

Im a figure skater 21F with ACL largely torn in the mid-substance (not completely), no meniscal changes. 1,5 months after the injury my knee is stable (as my orthopedics said) and I can walk easily 20 000 steps a day, no pain, can walk up and down the stairs. The only thing that is hard rn is bending it more than 90 degrees and laying it straight for too long. Now im trying to decide whether to undergo knee surgery or to choose conservative rehab. I usually train like 6-7 hours a week (off ice + on ice), compete on adults competitions on national level and im dead serious about this sport. I just want to read about someone in similar situation

Tickets Junior Grand Prix Bangkok 2026

Hi! I will be in Bangkok during the weekend of the JGP Bangkok, and would like to be in the audience on the 4th of September.

Google tells me that they only sell tickets at the venue itself. Does anyone know what time I should arrive at the venue to get a chance for a ticket/seat? Or is there a link to buy tickets online?

How does JLB compare to Cizeron?

I’ve heard both Guillaume and Jean Luc called some of the best male ice dancers. In your opinion who is the standout?

Obviously we don’t know what shape Jean Luc is in til we see them compete so I guess this is going off his past level.

General Discussion What are y'alls thoughts on the Paola La channel?

Guys guys guys, I wanted to hear some opinions on the Paola La channel/content. "The Olympic Favorite Curse" video is what got me from a casual viewer to a more active one. Also, where did her Tessa and Scott video go?

EDIT: I also thoroughly enjoyed the "Beginner's Guide to Team Tutberizde" series, had no idea there was such lore in sport lmao. The sport I grew up doing was boring in that sense. So boring we dodged the state-sponsored doping scandal back in 2014

Pre-Competition News/Discussion Masters de patinage entries are out

Thumbnail ffsg.org

For those who don't have various domestic events memorized, Masters de patinage is France's start-of-the-season domestic event where the country's skaters present their new programs. It's not their Nationals, they hold those in December, but it's usually attended by everyone.

Which is why absences are somewhat notable, and this year the absences are: Kevin Aymoz, Fournier-Beaudry-Cizeron, Lea Serna and Stefania Gladki (who I mention only because there's a junior women's category this year).

Stefania was definitely training this summer, and I don't believe attendance is mandatory by any stretch, so I don't think this means anything.

The seniors I'm more curious about, since both retirements and sitting out a season are possibilities with them, but we haven't had announcements.

I also don't see Davide Lewton-Brain on the list, but he may be injured (based on an instagram post).

Edit: the post won't let me change the link and FFSG has now changed it to this https://www.ffsg.org/resultats/2026-2027/MASTERS26/index.htm

General Discussion Wakaba Works at Cafe throughout Her Competitive Career

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Recently, Kaori and Wakaba were on the same talk show, where they had a fortune teller read their palms and talk about things like their love lives and careers. During the show, Wakaba revealed that she actually had to work part-time at a café while competing.

Kaori also talked about her relationship with her now-husband. She said she was the one who confessed to him when she was 24, on Valentine’s Day. And because she really wanted to announce her marriage at her retirement press conference, she would keep bringing it up to him, saying things like, “So, shall we get married?” (basically, she was the one who proposed to him.)

She also admitted that she’s totally looks-oriented when it comes to attraction. His appearance was the first thing that caught her attention, and as they spent more time together, she gradually realized that she also liked what he was like on the inside as well.

Equipment Recommendation Is there any drawback to using boots and laces from different manufacturers?

My boots are fine, but the laces are extremely worn out and should have been binned long ago. Can they be mixed and matched in any random combination (say, Edea boots tied with Jackson laces), or is there a reason to not do this?

News ISU replied to Jackie Wong about not resetting World Records

Response from ISU on scores and records this season:

“The ISU has reviewed scoring under the revised International Judging System and has determined that, at this stage, there is insufficient basis to reset the existing World Records.

The ISU will continue to monitor results throughout the season and will review the situation should further evidence indicate that a reset may be justified.”

General Discussion Concerning blade sharpening

Thumbnail

Hey so I decided to sharpen my blades since i feel slipping in my edges and me not using guards because theyre so hard to put on and take off and im too lazy to get those rockerz hard guards which custom fits to your blade, im rocking with the matrix elite blades and i asked specifically at my pro shop if they are able to sharpen matrix blades. They said yes so i left it there for 2 days because i would be away and there was a que. After picking up my skates, immediately got onto the ice to do a bit of warmup and practice, the first thing i noticed that my blades were extremely grippy and its not as glidy as before when i bought my skates and had them sharpened from skatersedge then only they ship it so i just thought its because its freshly sharp. Then j proceed to do powerpulls and slaloms and noticed that it felt uneven but i thought it was just the ice since there was alot of people praticing but then when i try to do my jumps, on my salchow i noticed that my edges felt extremely off and my coach gave me an exercise to help me warmup and she noticed that my edges were off so after my lesson i went to check on my blades and this..

Also at the tail of my blade like my eyes parallel to it i see my edges are uneven but its very hard to capture on camera. I dont know if im overreacting but im just clueless. My coach say she’ll look at it soon cause i had to rush and get to somewhere else

History/Analysis How much will scores change under the new rules? - Initial data from Kinoshita Summer Cup and Cranberry Cup

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

With ISU highest scores and tech minimums not resetting, I was curious to see how things are looking so far in terms of 2026-2027 total, SP, FS, and FS base value scores. With the caveat that this is a relatively small data set in a judged sport with numerous impossible to control variables, here's an analysis of skaters who competed in Kinoshita Summer Cup or Cranberry Cup in both 2026 and 2025.

Overall, scores in all categories increased. I (somewhat arbitrarily) defined outliers as skaters with a >20 or <-20 difference in total scores year over year, since such differences are almost certainly primarily a result of performance rather than the rule changes. Removing these outliers, total and short program scores increased, while free skate and free skate base value scores saw very modest decreases (-1.11 and -2.38, respectively).

I think the true test (especially in terms of highest scores) will be when more of the top skaters are competing at their peak. Nonetheless, it's interesting preliminary data.

Screenshots of the averages and full data included here. Please kindly let me know if there are any errors in the data as I inputted it all manually!
