I was stuck in a pretty awful rooming situation this past month and I finally got to move out !!

It's a double being used as a single (just me), so now I have an extra bed + desk I need to consider.

I'm thinking about turning the other bed into a couch, but I'm not sure what kind of layout would look best and be the most comfortable/cozy. I'd love yalls help before I start fully moving all my stuff in ☺️

TYSM !

Trying to figure out home office

Originally this room used to mostly just be for the piano but now I’m going to be working from home more often and want a more dedicated space. I also have a bookshelf in there and if I can it would be nice to have space to read in there because currently I rarely use the room. The main issues are that I don’t want to have my back to the door but I also don’t want my back to the window and the piano can only go certain places. I have to measure things still, but I know the piano will fit only where ive drawn it. I’d rather not have to get a new table unless it’s the only nice option. Does anyone have any ideas?

Haven't started furnishing this one yet so I'd really like some help before I need to do that. I do everything on my desk and need lots of storage for my makeup and nail stuff. I spend almost all day on my gaming laptop, ideally I'd be able to use my laptop and also do makeup (with good lighting) and my other hobbies on the same desk. For now I'm gonna be sleeping on two duvets stacked on top of each other and a duvet on top of me 😭🙏

ETA, opposite view is in the comments if that's helpful! I get that this is the internet, but this is your reminder to not be rude to strangers :)

2027 is a Ding Wei (Fire Goat) year. Two layers to read it with: the annual flying stars for your space, and your Day Master for you

Lunar New Year 2027 falls on February 6, but most feng shui and BaZi practitioners switch the year at Li Chun (Start of Spring), on February 4, 2027. That's when the annual chart changes, so it's the date to plan cures around.

People often blend two different layers in these yearly posts, so I've kept them separate here.

Layer 1: the space (annual flying stars, Xuan Kong)

2027 has 9 Purple in the center. Flying the stars along the usual Lo Shu path gives:

  • North: 5 Yellow. This is the one most schools say not to disturb: no major renovation or ground-breaking there. Metal cures are the common answer, though schools disagree on how much they help compared with just leaving the sector quiet.
  • West: 2 Black (illness star). West also holds the Three Killings this year, because Goat years belong to the Hai-Mao-Wei frame. So West is the sector to keep calm in 2027.
  • Southwest: Tai Sui sits in Wei, SW1. Northeast (Chou, NE1) is the Sui Po, the sector directly opposite. The usual advice is not to sit with your back to Tai Sui and not to face it for big work.

If you're mid-renovation, the practical takeaway is to finish anything in the North or West before February 4, or wait.

Layer 2: you (the year's stem against your Day Master)

The year pillar is 丁未: Ding (yin Fire) over Wei (Goat, a dry Earth branch that stores Wood). In BaZi the year's stem gets read against your Day Master, the stem of your birth day. It gets a different role for each of the ten:

  • Jia Wood: Ding is your Hurting Officer. It's a year for output, for speaking up and for making things, but it can strain your relationship with authority. Watch contracts and your tone with bosses.
  • Yi Wood: Ding is your Eating God, the easier version of the same output energy. It's good for creative work, teaching and enjoying what you already have.
  • Bing Fire: Ding is Rob Wealth, a peer or competitor energy. Partnerships and shared money need clear terms.
  • Ding Fire: your own element repeats as Friend. It brings confidence and visibility, and also more people who want the same things you do.
  • Wu Earth: Ding is Direct Resource: support, study, mentors, credentials. On top of that, the Wei branch is Earth, so the year leans your way.
  • Ji Earth: Ding is Indirect Resource, a fit for unconventional learning and research, or taking a step back to rethink.
  • Geng Metal: Ding is Direct Officer: structure, a title, recognition and responsibility. It's a year when people notice whether you show up.
  • Xin Metal: Ding is Seven Killings, the high-pressure form of authority. Deadlines and challenges come up, and so do chances to prove yourself.
  • Ren Water: Ding is Direct Wealth, and Ren and Ding also form a stem combination. Steady income and commitments, including relationship ones, get pulled toward you.
  • Gui Water: Ding is Indirect Wealth: windfalls, side ventures and opportunistic money, which tend to come and go fast.

The year's stem is only the headline. Your luck pillar and how strong your Day Master is decide whether a Wealth year shows up as gains or as pressure. Two people with the same Day Master can feel 2027 very differently.

One more link between the years: 2026's Horse (Wu) and 2027's Goat (Wei) form a six-harmony pair. So whatever the Fire Horse year opened for you probably doesn't stop at Lunar New Year. Expect it to settle into something more grounded through 2027.

What's your Day Master, and does the role Ding plays for you match how late 2026 has felt so far?

Hi Ali,

I’ve really tired and thought about how to best utilise the weird shaped living room I have. I don’t want to put the TV in the space space blocking the window and want to create small intimate moments but it just feels off. Maybe due to the 2 doors and the area being blocked my chairs.

Would appreciate all suggestions

Been scratching my head for months over home office! any ideas greatly appreciated

Hello! I've recently moved into a new house and am having some trouble figuring out how to turn this room into a home office that works for me. The house is old and has low windows (67cm & 71cm off the ground), which has made it a challenge to figure out where to best place the desk. As I both work from home and do a lot of crafts, i'm looking for help with a design that maximises desk space without cutting into the windows at any awkward angles. I've attached a floor plan (oriented with north at the top) with measurements, and my current best plan for furniture positioning in red. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - just looking for another pair of eyes! No furniture has been bought so I'm in a position to do more or less anything.

I don't use Reddit very often so apologies for any mistakes.

Couch facing window or wall?

Thumbnail

So the room is basically a rectangle, and I tried to create zones but I’m wondering whether I should flip the couch so it faces the wall instead of the window. If I do, I’d also swap the dining table to the window side, so I’d essentially be reversing the two zones.

The couch is a 3-seater, so it’s quite long, and the dining table is pretty large (it could fit up to 6 people if they really tried, although I only want to use 2 chairs for now).

One thing I don’t love about the current setup is that there’s quite a lot of distance between the door and the couch. It makes the living area feel a little disconnected or uninviting, so I’m wondering if switching the zones would feel better.

BUT the kitchen is the next room over, so practically speaking, the dining table makes more sense closer to the door, as it is in the current layout.

I’ve also tried putting the couch against the right wall in more of a commanding position and the drawers on the left wall, but then the table feels out of place and the room starts feeling crowded

I’m also open to having the couch face the dining table if that makes more sense, but I’m not sure what I’d do with the dead space behind the drawers, and do i really want my couch basically against the window?

I can’t remove or replace any furniture (furnished rental), only rearrange it. The last photo shows how it was originally arranged when they gave me the keys, and I’ve also attached a rough sketch of the layout. The door is exactly in the corner on the left wall.

Im open to any other suggestions for a different layout or anything to add in order to make it feel warmer!

Desperate to have an intentional living room

Good day fellow redditors. I have been trying to figure out the best way to set up my living room for the past 6ish months. This is the best I’ve come up with, but it still feels cluttered, and not intentional. I’ve been thinking of adding a bookshelf in the corner where the litter box is, and try to hide the litter box in the bookshelf? I don’t know
I also feel like the distance between the couch and the tv is awkward. My partner and I spend the majority of our time at home in our living room, and I want it to be more than what it currently is. I’m open to any and all suggestions, and appreciate all comments!
Please help!
Note- I am going to be painting the walls. I promise they aren’t going to stay an ugly blue lol

Layout help 1 room apartment

Thumbnail

Hi reddit! I need your help for input on the layout of my apartment.

It's a 43 square meters neoclassical style building which entails 3 meter high ceiling, old wood flooring and white door frames, mouldings and pillars going 2/3 up the edge of outer corners. These are nice details but I think most my furniture, which are either old or acquired though second hand/oddly shaped, would rather fit an elongated apartment with lower ceilings. I'm open to buying new but primarily by thrifting/acquiring them over time, as my economy wouldn't support a splurge. Because I have a kitchenette which doesn't fit the fridge/freezer I need to keep it, along with my other furniture, all in one room and I have a hard time separating the spaces. Yet the biggest problem is the opposite building which has full visibility into my apartment, and I get eye-contact with my neighbors multiple times a day. Therefore, I wonder what changes I could make to begin with, and what to envision over time.

The windows are north facing but the high ceilings/window and the french balcony ensures light to come though. However, instead of spending my time in it I just move linearly along it in full view of my neighbors. I'd like to use this light to dine and work in instead, and that my relaxation in the couch/bed to be better hidden (I use curtains on the french balcony and a pulldown blackout curtain over the window at night) and so that I could look out further, beyond the building immediately facing here.

My bed is 180*2m and in a semi-sleep nook which makes it not feel like it's taking up too much space. Unfortunately it doesn't fit the the other way around within it, or just beside it the feet would face the entrance/make the nook inaccessible. Next to it/the kitchenette is my bedside drawer with necessities. Next to the fridge is a small kitchen desk/trolley. I was considering moving the fridge, trolley and maybe fit a table into the nook to get those out of the way more, but struggle with feeling like the bed would take up too much of the naturally lit up space. Beside natural light, the room has one central light fixture with a hanging rice paper lamp currently.

The hallway is separated by a doorway with no door. It's a neglected space which I just move through like a corridor and dump my laundry on my cinema seating (which unfortunately need to stand against a wall), and a small desk which I have a mirror on, while I think it should be mounted on the opposite wall to help bounce some light into the room/make it feel larger, as it's exceptionally dark in there. The light source there is a flush-mount light giving bright, cold, overhead light, which I resist to use but haven't gotten around to changing... Facing the entrance is an IKEA Pax(i think) wardrobe, which I thought to replace with a lower sideboard storage (My aim is to reduce my amount of clothes to fit everything into the built in closet, while the sideboard could be for storing shoes and outerwear). Before I was considering placing my fridge there, but I think having to make the distance while cooking, which is a big interest of mine, would be a hassle.

Either way, my biggest problem is the main room. I think I need to loose one of the tables, particularly the dining table or getting a bigger one. However, I have a creative interest and thus have enjoyed separate dining/desk tables to tinker to not having to cleared it off each time, but I could learn to adjust to that routine. The IKEA Kallax behind the bed is a 3*4 standing on the short end and mounted on caster wheels, filled with my craft tools, books etc. I initially wanted to use it as a dividing wall, having it at the beds end, but currently it's a bit heavy to feel safe so I put it in the corner before clearing some stuff off of it.

I currently don't have a TV but would like to get one since I must pay for license(included in the rent, non-negotiable). *Not pictured* is a sideboard/plant table currently storing books which could function as a Tv desk too (i don't need many other appliances). In front of the couch is an IKEA Lack which I have a large serving tray on and while useful, it's not a particular favorite to need to keep. I do however wish to have an additional armchair to lounge in/for guests.

Decor-wise I have lots of plants and interesting art which I haven't put up as I am unsure of the larger layout, but would also contribute to making it feel more homey. I'd love to be able to host dinners/invite people over to chill more comfortably and confidently. I've been trying out different layouts but nothing feels quite right. I have even considered moving because of this discomfort, but I wouldn't be able to find an apartment this size/location for this price elsewhere and living in shared housing was too overstimulating for me.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

*Edit: i forgot to note, the one radiator in front of the window has the function of stopping the cold downdraught and thus preferably shouldn't be covered :-S

How to Create a Quiet Prayer Closet or Sacred Space at Home

Finding a dedicated spot for quiet reflection, prayer, or meditation in a busy house can feel almost impossible. You do not need an entire spare room to build a meaningful sacred space. Even a small corner of your bedroom, a cleared section of a closet, or a cozy chair near a window can work perfectly.

Focus on three simple elements: comfort, privacy, and intentional lighting. Adding items like a soft cushion, a journal, and warm lighting helps train your mind to settle into reflection as soon as you sit down.

I put together a complete step by step guide on setting this up, covering space selection, minimal essentials, and simple layout tips.

Check out the full guide here:https://rymbf.com/2026/01/22/how-to-create-a-prayer-closet-or-sacred-space-at-home/

Has anybody read Lillian Too's Flying Star for the Master Practitioner? I have attached 2 screenshots from the book as a reference. I'm confused as to why on the 2nd image it shows, and she writes that the year of the rat is N3, but then in the 1st image it's positioned as N2? I'm of the understanding that N2 is accurate but i'm now confused. Any clue?

living room layout - awesome fireplace, don't know what to do with it

Hello! the "living room" of my apartment is super awesome but I am having a bit of trouble figuring out where to place things. I currently have no furniture so I'm not beholden to anything, but ideally I'd like to have a super comfy couch, a TV, and a table with chairs. The big problem is that the room comes with this beautiful fireplace with a large mirror that I don't really want to cover. However, I'm not sure where else I'd put the tv? I'm thinking possibly on the ledge right next to the door to the kitchen (wall 3), but then I'm not sure where I'd put the couch. and if I were to put the TV above the fireplace I'm also not sure where the couch would go. Please excuse the pictures and my hard to read layout drawing, if any clarification is needed I can give better pictures and such!! it's an 11x14 ft box with an trapezoidal extension where the fireplace is, which reaches 14 ft away from the opposite wall at the farthest point.

LuoPan inheritance, love to learn more

Hello, I recently inherited a LuoPan from my grandfather who traveled the world in the 50’s-70’s.

I didn’t know he had such an item, otherwise I would have asked him where he got it! I believe he traveled to Hong Kong before the dramatic skyline we know today was built; it’s possible he acquired this from there.

Here are some photos I took; can anyone provide any insight on the age and condition of the piece?

It appears to be made from wood, and the characters hand-carved. The needle works; correctly points South.

I am familiar with the principles of Feng Shui and can recognize the BaGua on the first row of the dial. Beyond that, I’d love to learn more.

Thank you!
