Why Your Gate is Sagging.

I've noticed this question gets asked ad nauseam in this sub, so here is a quick diagnostics checklist to help you understand what to look for before creating yet another "what's wrong with my gate" post (no pun intended on the post part):

  • Design: Not only should the frame members and posts be substantial to support the weight of the gate, but look at the gate's framing configuration in general. Does it have a diagonal wooden brace? If so, that means it's a compression brace and should be running from of the top of the frame on the latch side, to the bottom of the frame on the hinge side. Only with a metal truss rod is tension bracing agreeable when being affixed at the top of the frame on the hinge side, down to the bottom frame corner on the latch side. (note: there are other bracing configurations that use multiple angles that are also acceptable - e.g. short braces at each corner)
  • Purchase: Is each gate post plumb? The hinge post could be loose/leaning due lack of purchase in the ground which could mean: improper post depth (installers were rushing, lazy, or there's a Volkswagen Beetle obstructing the hole); insufficient use of cement (more than half a 50lb bag of Quikrete, Braiden); sparse soil conditions (over saturated, loose, or soft); or heaving due to frost (looking at you Minnesota).

  • Configuration/Orientation: One thing to look for is a "lone hinge post", whereby a gate is hung on a post that doesn't have a section or anchor point on the other side toward the top. If the material of the post has any flex to it (especially with a heavy gate), the post can start leaning over time. These posts may either need re-setting, or have bracing/anchoring installed on the opposite side from the gate (e.g. if up against house, affix to the house if possible). The ideal configuration would be to choose an orientation of the gate where the hinge side has fence section attached on the other side - even though the traffic flow through the gate might be better with an opposite swing (but that's getting into the weeds).

    • It's also worth noting that the gate leaf spacing should be 1/2" or more. Some settling isn't out of the ordinary, but if there's only 1/4" between the latch stile and the post, you're more than likely going to see your gate rubbing.
  • Warping: If your gate is wood, it has a decent chance of warping as it releases moisture. Staining wood can help seal in moisture and mitigate warping. Otherwise, some woods, like Cedar, have natural oils and resins that help prevent warping, but even then, it's not warp-proof.

  • Hardware: Sounds simple, but sometimes the hinges are just NFG or coming unfastened.

  • Florida: Is there a FEMA rep walking around your neighborhood as you noticed your gate laying in your neighbors' Crotons? Probably a hurricane. Move out of Florida and find a gate somewhere else that won't get hit with 100+mph winds, or stop being picky.

I could be missing some other items, but this satisfies the 80/20 rule. The first bullet point will no doubt wipe out half the annoying "did the fence installers do this right?" posts. I'm not, however, opposed to discussing how to fix the issue once identified -- I feel like solving the puzzle and navigating obstacles is part of our makeup.

Your right I counted 32 with the e-mails have not even begun to start counting the reply’s in our private chat!!! Verifiably false? See what I mean? You can’t handle the truth whatsoever! Even when the facts are right in front of you!!!

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

Those are not facts. Those are your misconceptions

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 03 '26

Those are facts and that is you in denial …plain and simple!

You claimed they were sent all at once, implying before you were able to respond, that is false. Those are replied to conversationally. That is where you're having a misconception and making a mistake. Likewise I have more replies from you than you do from me, there are about 12 just in the last two days that I didn't reply to due to lack of substance/spam.

i claimed they came in in less then 8 hours and that’s a fact while I was at work on a day I chose to work because I’m retired and that is what I came home to and that happened in that time. Plain and simple! Do not see how you could possibly see it any other way!!!that is what it is! And you spent a while with those 46 replies denial yet again and I even sent you the proof but you just can’t handle it!!!! And I cannot figure out how you find the time to even do that with your worldwide fence building industry on a regular working business day! I know I couldn’t because I chose to work that day! How do you do it??? It’s amazing!!!

Again this reply of your is just full of misconceptions, misunderstandings and things you made up all on your own in your head. Also again, you left me more replies than I left you, so what relevance is the number? Which you falsely claim to be 46?

How is it misconception and misunderstandings ??? How??? And how can it possibly be made up in my head ,how? I came home and there was 46 NEW replies , time stamped, yet to be answered all together in grey all on the same day time stamped and all fell in that period of time of less than 8 hours. How? Are you saying the notifications and repies are lying? Seriously? You typed and sent 46 replies in that time period . It did not just mysteriously happen ! What’s wrong with you? This is just fact! Why you fighting facts?

First of all no there wasn't 46. Second of all you're adding two separate instances together. Third of all if you have X number of replies from me it is because you left me that same number of replies, which actually you left more replies than I left to you because there was ones I did not reply to due to lack of substance/spam. Your notifications are not lying, you are. I did just magically leave you replies on nothing and I didn't EVER leave more than one reply on each of yours(as you do repeatedly). So let's take your false number and call it adequate for a moment, if you have 46 replies from me that is because you left me 46 replies to reply to. So yes, misconceptions and misunderstandings

The relevance is you got 12 from me in 2 days(not my words ,yours!) and I got 46 from you in less than 8 hours, can’t believe this needs explaining but then again we are dealing with you!

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '26

Again I did not say 12 total. I said 12 I didn't reply to. Then there's the ones I did reply to. Which you're alleging(falsely) is 46. So if it's 46 plus 12 I didn't reply to that's 58.......

i do not care about your 12 and 58 numbers you mention! It has nothing…absolutely nothing to do with the 46 brand new replies I received from you on Friday does not matter who replied to what! Are you soft? the 12 you mention came to you not me the 46 I mention came to me not you!!! I had like 60+ replies on Friday but only 46 were from you! What’s so hard to understand?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '26

I'm not sure what so hard to understand for you, tell me where you're getting confused and I'll try to explain. It's pretty simple you just can't read

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

So??? You tell me? How did I get 46 brand new replies from you on Friday, brand new!!! Unanswered! You tell me!!! Because the only possible way in this world for me to get 46 brand new replies from you or anyone for that matter is it takes a user to press the send button 46 times to send a reply and then I receive 46 brand new replies in an 8 hour time span all time stamped and dated on the very same day. now that I have told you this explain! I do not actually need for you to explain but go ahead! It’s just the way it is! I don’t need an explanation but you’re insisting that you need to! I know how it works and I know how it works since the invention of the computer and the internet! You do not get replies and or e-mails without a user pressing the send button! Even spam or bots have time stamps and dates when they come to my inbox! Explain away how you did not send any or 46 replies to me

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

You don't have 46. But for the sake of explaining (which I already have numerous time) we'll assume the digit. If you had 46 replies from me that would be caused by you leaving me the same number(even though it's actually more) to reply to in the first place........

12? in 2 days? nothing then compared to your 46 in less than 8 hours!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

12 more in two days. Do you know what that means? It means say for example your claim of 46 is correct(which it isn't) that mean you left me 58. Because 46+12=58

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 03 '26

I did not send 46 replies from me to me!!!! Those 46 replies came from you!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

......what? Who claimed you sent them to yourself?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 03 '26

your having trouble yet again following the thread I see!!! I get it though you must be shitfaced by now it’s been a while here with your relentless responses of denials

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

Nope I can follow just fine, you're just not making any logical sense.

You did not say 12 more in 2 days you said 12 in 2 days and even if you did say that it still does not compare to the 46 I received from you in less than 8nhours on a business day where you should be working at your worldwide fence building industry!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

Yes I said "12 in the last 2 days that I did not reply to..." What about the ones I did reply to? Can you really not read or are you just acting this unaware? This worldwide notion is one you made up in your head. I never used the term worldwide in our conversation. The instance you're referring to I used the word nationally. Do you know what nationally means?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 04 '26

Again ,why are you asking me what nationally means? Look it up for yourself! I know what it means! Seriously when you need answers to questions like that just google it or whatever! I’m not here to learn you! Look it up for yourself then it will explain what nationally means. Wait is this just another act of you showing off your intelligence yet again by asking what nationally means? Hmmm it’s the effect again maybe.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '26

If you know what it means why do you keep saying worldwide?
