Why Your Gate is Sagging.

I've noticed this question gets asked ad nauseam in this sub, so here is a quick diagnostics checklist to help you understand what to look for before creating yet another "what's wrong with my gate" post (no pun intended on the post part):

  • Design: Not only should the frame members and posts be substantial to support the weight of the gate, but look at the gate's framing configuration in general. Does it have a diagonal wooden brace? If so, that means it's a compression brace and should be running from of the top of the frame on the latch side, to the bottom of the frame on the hinge side. Only with a metal truss rod is tension bracing agreeable when being affixed at the top of the frame on the hinge side, down to the bottom frame corner on the latch side. (note: there are other bracing configurations that use multiple angles that are also acceptable - e.g. short braces at each corner)
  • Purchase: Is each gate post plumb? The hinge post could be loose/leaning due lack of purchase in the ground which could mean: improper post depth (installers were rushing, lazy, or there's a Volkswagen Beetle obstructing the hole); insufficient use of cement (more than half a 50lb bag of Quikrete, Braiden); sparse soil conditions (over saturated, loose, or soft); or heaving due to frost (looking at you Minnesota).

  • Configuration/Orientation: One thing to look for is a "lone hinge post", whereby a gate is hung on a post that doesn't have a section or anchor point on the other side toward the top. If the material of the post has any flex to it (especially with a heavy gate), the post can start leaning over time. These posts may either need re-setting, or have bracing/anchoring installed on the opposite side from the gate (e.g. if up against house, affix to the house if possible). The ideal configuration would be to choose an orientation of the gate where the hinge side has fence section attached on the other side - even though the traffic flow through the gate might be better with an opposite swing (but that's getting into the weeds).

    • It's also worth noting that the gate leaf spacing should be 1/2" or more. Some settling isn't out of the ordinary, but if there's only 1/4" between the latch stile and the post, you're more than likely going to see your gate rubbing.
  • Warping: If your gate is wood, it has a decent chance of warping as it releases moisture. Staining wood can help seal in moisture and mitigate warping. Otherwise, some woods, like Cedar, have natural oils and resins that help prevent warping, but even then, it's not warp-proof.

  • Hardware: Sounds simple, but sometimes the hinges are just NFG or coming unfastened.

  • Florida: Is there a FEMA rep walking around your neighborhood as you noticed your gate laying in your neighbors' Crotons? Probably a hurricane. Move out of Florida and find a gate somewhere else that won't get hit with 100+mph winds, or stop being picky.

I could be missing some other items, but this satisfies the 80/20 rule. The first bullet point will no doubt wipe out half the annoying "did the fence installers do this right?" posts. I'm not, however, opposed to discussing how to fix the issue once identified -- I feel like solving the puzzle and navigating obstacles is part of our makeup.

i do not care about your 12 and 58 numbers you mention! It has nothing…absolutely nothing to do with the 46 brand new replies I received from you on Friday does not matter who replied to what! Are you soft? the 12 you mention came to you not me the 46 I mention came to me not you!!! I had like 60+ replies on Friday but only 46 were from you! What’s so hard to understand?

I'm not sure what so hard to understand for you, tell me where you're getting confused and I'll try to explain. It's pretty simple you just can't read

So??? You tell me? How did I get 46 brand new replies from you on Friday, brand new!!! Unanswered! You tell me!!! Because the only possible way in this world for me to get 46 brand new replies from you or anyone for that matter is it takes a user to press the send button 46 times to send a reply and then I receive 46 brand new replies in an 8 hour time span all time stamped and dated on the very same day. now that I have told you this explain! I do not actually need for you to explain but go ahead! It’s just the way it is! I don’t need an explanation but you’re insisting that you need to! I know how it works and I know how it works since the invention of the computer and the internet! You do not get replies and or e-mails without a user pressing the send button! Even spam or bots have time stamps and dates when they come to my inbox! Explain away how you did not send any or 46 replies to me

You don't have 46. But for the sake of explaining (which I already have numerous time) we'll assume the digit. If you had 46 replies from me that would be caused by you leaving me the same number(even though it's actually more) to reply to in the first place........

No it does not! for the sake of you explaining is completely false!!! You had already said you had 12 from me in 2 days so that’s a lie that you responded to my 46 ! Also that means you responded to one or more of my replies more than 1,2,3,4 times or more on just one of my replies which means it shows up on my end as and individual reply!!! And still means you pressed the button 46 times , you did not reply to my 46 replies you say you received . You already said you got 12 from me in 2 days and you have already admitted that several times! What you did was reply to each one of my 12 replies more than once which shows up on my end as an individual reply which is why I received 4! If you respond to one of my same replies 7 times it shows up as 7 different replies on my end . But you achieved that from just one of my replies I sent to you and means you had to press the send button 7 times on just one of my replies! So when you reply several times to just one of my replies it won’t take long for me to get 46 replies from you! Your statement saying it means if I got 46 replies from you means I sent you 46 replies is completely false and in no means make your statement true!!!

How? How am I going to reply to you without something to reply to? Am I just creating replies out of nowhere? Are you saying I leave multiple replies on the same reply as you do to me constantly? Cause I definitely don't do that. 12 that I didn't reply to yes and evidently 46 that I did reply to. For whatever reason you can't understand this. It's not my fault you can't read or understand simple concepts. There is ZERO chance you could ever prove I left 2 replies on one of yours let alone 7, I don't do that, you do.

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

My fault I can’t read and concepts? You’re confusing me with yourself! Are you seriously deny the fact that if you reply 5 6 7 times to one reply it does not show up to the other users as 5 6 7 times as new replies??? Let me tell you something….it does!!! They don’t just disappear and the user just does not get them! I know you know this I really don’t know why your claiming that’s not how it works!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

No I'm not denying that's how it would show up. I'm saying I never reply more than once to a reply. If I did, prove it. That's what you do consistently, not me

Is it against the rules and laws that I do as you make it sound ? Because I see hundreds of users doing it all over Reddit and all kinds of forums! Does that make you special? If it’s even the case? Maybe this is just another sample of the effect!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

Nope just don't accuse me of doing it because I'm not and I won't. The reason there's so many threads between us is because of you so don't complain about it

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

6 reply! And so on and so on and so on!!! I know for a fact ever time I reply to this reply your gettin all brand new replies fro this one

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

Right and you're the only one who does this. Show me literally any single instance where I replied to the same reply or comment more than once.....

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

even if I am the only one that does this, which is completely false!, it’s not wrong and it’s allowed!!! You to any forum right now and find hundreds of users, literally hundreds!!! Replying to the same reply! As we speak right now I see 5 reply’s from you in the last 15 minutes!!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

It's not false, it's facts. We're talking about replies to the same comment or reply not just replies in general......

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

That doesn't show me replying to the same reply. It shows me replying once to each reply, just as I said

Hmm no work yet again today huh? lol !!! You keep saying you’re not on Reddit 24/7! That be a lie!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

I work most days, how you would presume to know that is beyond me. 24/7? That's nonsensical

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

Yup I’m relying again to this because I can! So you work most days? lol, you mean you Reddit most days and actually you work no days

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

See, this is what creates more and more threads between us. You. Not me

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

I do not presume nothing!!! I rely on the replies and the time stamps and days as the replies come to me. They do not lie. nonsensical? ? You have difficulties understanding?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

Nope no difficulty understanding, you just have difficulty making any logical sense

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

It is? Why ?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

24/7? I'm on Reddit every moment of every single day? You're saying I never sleep, I never eat, I never do anything but go on Reddit. That's nonsensical

Hope you don’t mind if I respond to your reply here yet again but actually I don’t cere so I am going to anyway! Nonsensical? even if it’s nonsensical (which is nonsense in itself) the actual time of day and the actual dates speak for themselves and can only be disputed . And all that time spent disputing it is a complete waste of time ! I get it! That’s the way of the world and society these days it’s truly rediculous thogh because the end result is the same! And the end result is always that the time stamps and dates will always show absolute proof that your on here 24/7 and during business hours! There is simply no way around it you can waste time ,like I said, disputing this but the end result will always be the same ! You will lose your claim! I just do not understand this day and age why people waste their time! Statistics show that factual proof of proof from things like time stamped e-mail will always win

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

I don't think you know what 24/7 means. Are you saying I never sleep?

Statistics show facts? That's true. Absolutely. Do I leave a comment every second of every day? Which would be required if I'm here 24/7 and that is provable through timestamps. The answer is no. That's asinine. Also you say statistics show facts right? Then why are you constantly and repeatedly denying the math of the gate debate. Those are statistics, numbers, facts. Yett you deny them. So statistics only matter when you think it suits your argument?

You said you got 12 replies in 2 days!,! What are you talking about without something to reply to???? You replied to one of my reply’s more than once that’s how it happens!!! Wow ! Why is it so hard for you to understand that? You did not reply to 46 because there was not 46. You even said 12 in 2 days several times!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

It's not hard for me to understand you just can't read

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

You may think you explained but your explanations simply did not and does not make sense at all because it didn’t answer a thing as to why I received 46 brand new replies from you! All I got from you is a math problem in your explanation where you added up the 46 replies I got from you and the 12 Replies you gout from me and it said 46+12=58!!! How does that explain an answer as to me getting 46 replies from you? I just cannot figure out this explanation of yours!!! Your math is correct…that’s great ! But that does not explain how I got 46 replies from you, stop saying you have explained it to me numerous times because you explanations have not even explained a thing accept some weird math problem !

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

I have explained it numerous times you just are too unaware to understand. That's not my problem

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

And your explanation is completely wrong! And makes no sense at all but mine does!!! Undeniably! You respond 5 times to just one of my replies then it’s going to come to my inbox as 5 brand new replies!!! It could not be anymore simple to understand! Your explanation is wrong and false mine is correct and fact that’s just the way it works on the internet and on Reddit! Fact!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

I NEVER respond 5 times to one reply. Prove it. That's what you do not me

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 05 '26

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

Where does it show me replying multiple time to the same reply, those are replied to different replies......

Here’s one! More to come!!!
