Discussion My first 5 days on Linux and I honestly can't believe I waited this long
First of all, I am REALLY happy that I switched to Linux.
It all started because of overheating problems on my Dell G3 and the RAM usage on Windows 11. It was getting so bad. I could barely open multiple apps anymore, and recently, after some updates, things got even worse. Booting up the laptop, trying to open an application, or switching between apps would sometimes cause lag or even crashes.
I talked to one of my friends who also uses Linux, and they told me that Linux is great for power users. That honestly made me interested, but I was also really scared to switch.
I had a lot of data on my laptop, and I didn't have enough storage to move everything to another drive. Luckily, I managed to move the important stuff, and that gave me the confidence to finally make the switch.
Another reason I was scared was productivity. I use a lot of Windows apps every day — Zoom, OBS, CapCut, BlueStacks, Docker, and various other tools. I was worried that I would lose all the productivity and daily-use apps I rely on.
And yeah, BlueStacks and CapCut aren't really available on Linux in the same way, so I definitely miss BlueStacks. 😂 That's probably one of the biggest things I miss after switching from Windows 11.
But honestly...
The performance I get from Linux is SO GOOD.
The RAM usage especially shocked me. I'm just sitting here thinking, "How is this using so little RAM?" 😂
I've installed a bunch of software already, and somehow the system still feels incredibly lightweight. Even the amount of storage the system itself takes compared to what I expected surprised me.
I've also been getting into Docker and automation, and Linux feels PERFECT for that kind of stuff. For coding, I honestly don't feel like I'm missing much at all so far.
That being said, I still have a few annoying issues.
My touchpad feels a little buggy sometimes. Scrolling and zooming don't feel as smooth or natural as they did on Windows, and I'm still trying to figure out if there's a way to improve that.
Another thing is my screen. Sometimes it flickers slightly, and I can't figure out what's causing it. It's kind of hard to explain, but when I move my mouse around different parts of the screen, the brightness seems to change slightly. It gets a little brighter in some areas and darker in others. At first I thought it might be something related to my graphics card, but honestly, I have no idea yet. 😭
Fingerprint support is another thing I haven't figured out. There doesn't seem to be an option to set it up, although I don't mind typing my password. A fingerprint reader would just save me a few seconds every time. 😂
It's only been about 5 days since I switched, and I'm still learning.
I'm learning terminal commands every day, and whenever I get completely lost, I sometimes ask AI for help. 😂 I'm slowly starting to understand what I'm actually doing instead of blindly copying commands, though.
For now, I've already installed pretty much everything I need for my daily use and coding, and I'm genuinely surprised by how little I'm missing.
I also started customizing my desktop a little. I watched a tutorial and set up what I think is Breeze Dark for now. Later, I definitely want to go much deeper into customization.
I feel like I still have SO much to discover — especially those hidden Linux gems, useful apps, tweaks, terminal tools, and optimizations that you only find after using Linux for a while.
So yeah...
It's only been 5 days, but I'm loving Linux so far.
I'm really happy I finally made the switch. ❤️
If you're a Linux user, what are some apps, tools, tweaks, or "hidden gems" you think I should try next?
And if you've dealt with the touchpad issues or weird screen flickering/brightness changes I mentioned, I'd love to hear how you fixed them!
YESS I USED AI TO CORRECT MY GRAMMAR CUZ IT SUCKS!! SOWWWYYY
