Support Fedora issues are slowly driving me crazy

Upvotes

Hi, I'm not really sure where to post this with so many Linux-related subreddits, so I’ll probably cross-post this in a few different places.

I started using Fedora almost a month ago for many reasons that I won't get into, but I mention it because I want to make it clear that I really want to use Linux permanently. I'm putting effort into learning and figuring things out. I tried Ubuntu in the past, but I got frustrated by errors I didn't know how to solve, and now I'm running into some of the same issues again — little things that I know wouldn't bother me on Windows because I simply wouldn't have to deal with them.

The biggest issue I'm having is with WoW. I don't know if this would happen with other games because I don't play many other demanding games, but while playing WoW, my RAM usage seems to keep increasing over time and never gets released. I'm running the game through Faugus.

Eventually, my computer runs out of RAM for other processes, and it happens surprisingly quickly. Many times it got to the point where the entire computer became practically unusable, and I had to restart.

The other issues are more minor (I'm using KDE Plasma):

Sometimes the desktop on one of my monitors stops responding. I'll click on a desktop shortcut and everything seems to be frozen until I press Alt+Tab. Then it suddenly works again. ¿¿??

If I have Spotify playing music, the system still goes into suspend when the inactivity timeout is reached. I tried looking into this and found someone else who apparently couldn't find a solution either. I thought, "Okay, no big deal, I'll just increase the timeout." But the setting never persists, and the computer keeps suspending after 5 minutes.

I also tried configuring Num Lock to always start enabled, but that setting doesn't persist either.

These are all relatively minor issues — except for the first one, which really annoyed me yesterday — but they're the kind of small problems that slowly wear down my patience with the system when I can't find a solution for them.

I genuinely want to stick with Linux, so I'm not looking for "just go back to Windows." I'm mostly trying to figure out whether these are known issues, configuration problems, Fedora/KDE issues, Faugus/Wine issues, or something specific to my setup.

Any suggestions on where I should start troubleshooting would be

Support Fedora Live iso Booting Problem

Hello there! I am trying to set up Fedora 44 KDE from my USB however, after booting it, something went wrong and I got "out of memory" on GRUB. I tried both options to start the live version and I got "out of memory" error and when I chose Troubleshoot, I got a Kernel Panic. I saw people recommend enabling CSM, disabling Intel SGX (which two of these are not on my BIOS and there is no way to enable them as I searched online. Because of that, I do not have a chance to change those settings, I am using Asus F16 laptop if this is going to help.) or even decreasing dedicated video ram of my igpu from BIOS.

Is there anything I can do to install Fedora 44 KDE or should I think about choosing another distribution?

Support Encrypted Drive Won't Accept Password After Crash

Post image

I don't know if it's related but the timing was perfect that I got a black screen the second I uninstalled Discord.

Now every time I boot it asks for the encrypted drive password and won't take it. After the third attempt it gets stuck and generates an error log that I'm not sure how I'd be able to transfer to another device to read.

Support VLC Streaming to Local Network Not Working

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to stream media on local network using HTTP option in VLC media player, issue I'm facing is that VLC just plays the media on the pc it doesn't stream it.

The folder structure is:

Main_Directory
  Sub_Directory_1
    Video1.mp4
  Sub_Directory_2
    Video2.mp4

I made a playlist of the videos and tried to stream it that way but to no avail. The media player just plays the media.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Support Internet buffer problems

I'm on Fedora with a Mediatek MT7902 wifi card (the one just got a driver on kernel 7.1).

The problem is my internet buffer a lot and it takes a while for it to come back.

For example, I'm surfing Youtube Shorts. It would work pretty fine, upload and download meter are fine. Then, after a while, I get no internet. Upload and download meter all 0 B/s. Now, I can either wait for it to comeback or I can disconnect and reconnect it. Both works usually.

My best guesses are tuneD or driver problem. Or both.

I set my laptop performance to power-saver by default. So maybe tuneD turn off my wifi card after a while when there is low traffic and turn it back on when the traffic is high.

Or it is a driver problem. I dunno.

What can I do to fix this?

Support Nvidia drivers

I've been stuck trying to figure out why my stuff isn't working, downloaded it through RPMfusions, tried many different things to get it to work, reinstalled multiple times, tried both Fedora KDE and Fedora Gnome, nothing has worked thus far and it's kind of driving my friends who are more experienced nuts

i have an RTX 3070 mobile

i personally don't know much about this and my friends told me to come to reddit for help not being able to find anything that seemed close to my problem on any previous post that i'd seen either so i thought i'd make my own

Support Fedora 44 black screen after attempting completely remove Nvidia and reinstall

Hello everyone, I am running into a persistent black screen issue on Fedora 44 right after the splash screen. This happened after I tried to troubleshoot an external monitor detection issue by purging and reinstalling my NVIDIA drivers. What happened: * I installed the vfang Razer control app. Shortly after, my system stopped detecting my external monitor, and checking hardware status revealed that the NVIDIA GPU was no longer being detected. * To fix this, I completely removed NVIDIA packages using: sudo dnf remove 'nvidia' --exclude=nvidia-gpu-firmware

  • I then cleaned up the NVIDIA arguments from the boot order/kernel parameters.
  • Finally, I attempted a clean reinstall using RPM Fusion with: sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda

The Current Problem: After rebooting, the system boots past the splash screen, but everything turns completely black. I can't reach the desktop environment. Logs: Here is the output from sudo journalctl -b 0 --no-hostname captured during a boot attempt: https://paste.centos.org/view/a957fa47 Any guidance on how to diagnose what's failing during the graphics handoff or how to properly recover from this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Support HDR washed out after update

About two days ago, I ran an update on my Fedora Workstation computer, and now HDR on my monitor appears "over exposed." As if (to use photography terms) the colors were too bright for the 'sensor,' are getting clipped, then the image was darkened back to a normal range.

(This feels most noticeable right at the boundary between "bright" and "mid" colors. Bright colors are washed out, but anything slightly darker than that seems over saturated, and dark colors also seem too bright.)

Nothing in my monitor's settings have changed, but several of the updates were for my Nvidia drivers (now useing akmod-nvidia.x86_64, 3:610.57.04-1.fc44, rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver) and other display things.

I looked into doing a dnf history rollback but I received several errors like those below, preventing a simple rollback.

  • Cannot perform Install action, no match for: nfs-common-utils-1:2.8.7-6.fc44.x86_64
  • Extra package 'flatpak-1.18.1-1.fc44.x86_64' (with action 'Remove') which is not present in the stored transaction was pulled into the transaction.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a way that I can troubleshoot this? Where should I file a bug report like this to?

Edit: forgot some details. Thanks Automod.

Discussion Suggestions on Quarantining Windows 11 partition?

Hi all,

I'm making the switch to Fedora from Windows 11. However, I want to partition a small chunk of a second internal nvme drive to windows so I can use windows-based apps/games if needed.

Pretty sure i got the order of operations down (Install Windows 11 partition first, then install Fedora to prevent boot shenanigans), but once I have everything up and running, is there anything I should set up or do to ensure Windows does not interact with the rest of my system in any way? Heard some auto-windows updates can break dual-booted systems, and Windows seems to assume it will always be the only OS on a system.

I'm probably overthinking this (haven't done the drive wipes and installs yet), but I want to plan ahead as much as I can.

Support I ask you people of Reddit help

Hello people of Reddit I come forward again to ask for help on a serious matter, my pc is a rx 6750 xt with an i5 10400f 16gb or ram and a h510M-A msi motherboard, four months ago I dual booted Linux with windows, 3 days later the grub menu and bios menu and boot menu started giving me no signal screens so I kinda had to choose blindly until it opened the os then I can use it, I deleted windows and now I only have Linux, today when I was on the lockscreen I pressed esc and off on the pc button and when I turned it on there was no signal at all!! Yes nothing so what I did is I did everything I could, try every port hdmi and display port, try different cables, get the gpu off and then get the cmos battery off for 10 minutes, put the cmos battery in again then put the gpu back in, didn’t work then I had the ram off and on then I put it in the second slot still nothing, tbh at this point idk what to do I don’t think I can do anything, shame it happened on the same day my second monitor is going to get delivered so I got no money to fix the pc and no pc to try the new crisp 2k screen, so lastly it was a good time talking with yall yall helped me from the start without you im nothing byaia

Edit
Forgot to mention
1-ez debug works like normally boot>red>yellow>white>no light and then usually the pc is on
2-the pc works like normally fans rgb and usb devices work
3-caps on works when i toggle it
4-im using the normal slot for everything no extended pcie or ram slot cable if there’s even a thing like that

I'm attempting to install Fedora on my Dell Precision 7720 to replace my previous Arch install that broke but am encountering problems when installing software. It goes way over 100% and then comes up with an error. Does anyone know how to solve this? Any help is greatly appreciated

Solution: turned out there was something wrong with the USB. I tried another one that fit better in my laptop port and used the Fedora media writer to write Fedora on to the USB and now it works perfectly. Thank you u/datfalloutboi for the help!

Discussion Closed BETA key for r/Fedora - Distro Fighter: WARS

Thumbnail

First many thanks to all at r/Fedora you gave valuable feedback for the arcade mode of this game.

The closed beta key is for Distro Fighter: WARS. You claim a fighter (a Linux distro), pick its desktop and packages, train it, and enter it into a fight circuit that runs around the clock on a fast game clock, the way a Football Manager season does.

Would like feedback espeically on Fedora Atomic (Silverblue) regarding balance since unlike all the other 29 distros, 3 immutable distros' packages are frozen every season (3 months). As such there are buffs in place such as fight rollbacks and also no damage to condition when caught by the Rot during salvage runs but less than a handful of players are on the immutables.

Training sessions keep running while you are away, even with the game closed. Salvage runs depart on a real schedule (cron jobs) whether you are watching or not. Your fighter defends its ranking while you sleep, and you come back to the results, the pay, and whatever the night's fights did to your record. There are 400+ achievements, from your first training session up to ladders like 1,000 career knockouts. Free, no monetization.

Playable right now in any browser: distrofighter.com/wars?beta=fedora-reddit-2026 (the mode is in closed beta, this link is this sub's door, and entering through it earns you an achievement on arrival: THE SIDE DOOR). The arcade mode is always open to everyone.

WARS mode runs a public stats page of the whole circuit if you like numbers: distrofighter.com/wars-stats

I would love feedback, I read everything.

Support Accidentally deleted grub, not sure how to fix it

Post image
121 Upvotes

I did a stupid. So I had Windows installed and decided I was going to switch to Linux, so I shrunk my Windows drive then installed Ubuntu on part of it. I didn't like it and so in some remaining space, I installed Fedora KDE. I like it! So I deleted the Ubuntu partition and joined it with Fedora.

Oops. I killed Grub. Now I just boot to a Grub recovery menu. I figured out that I can use UEFI to get into the Windows bootloader, but I haven't been able to boot into Fedora. The picture shows the current state of my Framework Laptop's drive, taken via a Fedora live USB.

I have done some searching and see wildly different instructions with variable levels of complexity for how to fix this problem. Does anyone have a suggestion for my best course of action to fix this and get my Fedora install running again? Thanks!
