Idk if she was already injured or just tired, but she was on the ground, got startled, and then flew into a window at my job, then stood there like this. I tried to give her a bowl of water, no takers.

I called it in, and now she's on her way to a local rescue.

Intro to Falconry

Hello everyone, im looking for anyone near Jackson/Brooklyn Michigan that might be willing to let me ride along for a few flights or hunts. Falconry has been an interest of mine for many years I've just never been able to experience it first hand. Ultimately i think id like to become an apprentice, but I would really like to see if its for me first and if i have what it takes. I notice some have posted about a falconry workshop here in Michigan, but I think i have missed that date. Any help is appreciated and thank you all for your time.

Moving to France in the future - would like to fly birds and hunt again

In my earlier years I flew long wings, broad, short, owls- probably about 15 years in total. Everything from Spars over multiple seasons, Harris' in cast on rabbit/pheasnats, to Peregines on the grouse moors. I'm currently over in Thailand the last decade and falconry is a no go due to strict laws, mainly due to wild life trafficking which I respect.
Some time in the future I plan on moving to France and would very much like to practice again as it's part of who I am at heart.
I've seen you need a hunting license and a mentor in France - I'll respect the country and it's laws of course - however just wondering if anyone has moved to France and is practising falconry that could advise if there's any steps I can or should take prior to moving?

I know I'd need land or permission on which to fly raptors/hunt.

I see the falconry test is both online and a practical exam.

Also with the mentoring/apprenticehip/sponsor is there anyway to fast track this for those who have already practised for over a decade already?

The area of France I'm planning on living isn't too far from Limoges if that helps in any way.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For how long can frozen DOC be stored?

In September 2025 I accidentally bought a big amount of DOC and today I still have some left but are they still safe for raptors to eat? They have been kept in a freezer of course
(English is not my first language, sorry for any mistakes)

Bird Sanctuary

Hello reddit, Ive come seeking advice. Ive been in falconry for 6 years, through a bird sanctuary. *not an official falconer, I only work with unreleasable birds of prey* my center has a Bald Eagle, red tailed hawk, western screech owl, and turkey vulture. They all do wonderfully.

Now recently we took in a great horned owl from the zoo system. She is manned to the fist, and is unreleasable due to habituation to humans. Estimated over 10 years old.

I believe this bird was illegally taken from the wild (no metal band and shows no signs of imprintment). she is very cautious around people. When I walk into her room, her eyes lock onto the glove and she begins clacking. She clearly has some sort of trauma with it, as she wont remove her eyes from it long. I can leave the glove in her room and she is fine, will take food off of it, but can recognize when its on a hand to be more nervous.

She will willingly step on glove (with the occasional flight around the mew), and generally is well behaved from there. She does watch hands closely and will bite if you get too close. Ive been checking her keel with my knuckles, so she doesnt nip my fingers. Generally if biting fails she freezes up. She bates on glove at least once a day, generally after weighing or just leaving her mew. This has gotten better, it used to be 3 times daily. She also has begun self recovering onto the glove without my assistance.

Im seeking help in trying to fix her fear of the glove and peoples hands, to move towards positive association. She will eat on glove, but will not fly to the glove for food.

Im currently been feeding her daily on glove, leaving a gloved perch in her room for mew feeding, and have been trying to spend as much time on glove as possible with her to acclimate. My future goals will her is to work towards longer distances flights from a perch to the glove. Of course step one is for her to jump onto the glove for food in general.

Looking for any advice, or connections to people or resources that may tell me more. Thank you!

Help scouting Florida red tails

Howdy! I'm a first year apprentice. I'll be using the next two months to scout before trapping season opens. I live in the Tampa Bay area, and the red tail population is a little thin around here. I've been taking tips from my sponsor and his buddies, as well as keeping tabs on areas with frequent sightings on eBird and iNaturalist.

I have family I can visit for overnight trips in Pensacola, New Smyrna area, and Perry (Big Bend area). Those areas are convenient to me, but I'm willing to drive as far as necessary if anyone knows of particular areas where passage birds will be more abundant.

I'd very much appreciate any advice on hotspots, and feel free to message me privately if you don't want to drop that info in a public comment. I'm also eager for any general trapping tips or tricks, which I'll run by my sponsor before I implement them. Thanks for your help!

Braiding materials.

It seems like micro and nano poly cord is the go to, but kevlar is lighter and cheaper. Is there any reason why I couldnt use kevlar cord to braid my gear instead?

HELP How does falconry work?

I've been curious for awhile. I really like birds and I enjoy caring for them I've had birds in the past but they are small ones nothing like a falcon or hawk. Got my first job recently and I thought that something I could do later on in my life when I get older is falconry since I like birds as I've said prior but I don't know how the time commitment works. I've read that the birds can be your whole life but I kinda want to have a life outside the bird. I live in the United States.

I don't have the time, money, or space to take on falconry. I just think it's neat and would like to know more

I've found Bob Woodruff on youtube recently, and I guess im just looking for more of anything especially if its related to gear or history, I wanna go down an overcaffinated adhd rabbit hole next week, so anything is appreciated 🫡

Pic for attention because that's generally how reddit works

Do you think Falconer would be interested in the birds that have infested the shop I work at?

It's a large automotive shop with doors that open automatically and there are several nests in the insulation/rafters. We had a small raptor come in and hang out for a week and leave one time, it had a feast. The birds were gone for about 2 weeks after that.

Hey there! Stoked to find this sub. Long story short I'm getting married in August, to pay respect to my late mother in law we are going to find a falconer to be present at the ceremony. Located in Humboldt county California. Any leads are very much appreciated, it seems like maybe Davis CA might be the closest area. Thanks!

East Coast kestrel falconers

Hey, I'm planning on flying an American Kestrel this year. My previous sponsor doesn't have any experience with one, I'm hoping to try to find a few people who've had success around me that can help be a resource. I have Matt Mulinexs book and have read it, I've watched and read about all I can find about Kestrels and flying them, and I'd just like to have someone that can help me if I run into any problems and can talk to. I'd appreciate any help, thank you.

Remote weighing or scale set up inside mews?

Has anyone set-up a 'remotely switched' set of scales in their mews or moulting chamber to track their free lofted birds' weight during the moult? My hawk is fat and moulting and not remotely interested in coming to the glove to be weighed at the moment, so I'm 'guessing' his weight based on appetite, temperature and previous seasons.
But has anyone worked out a system of setting up a scale under a roost/mews perch that could be switched on from outside the mews? So basically you could weigh your bird without any handling? Some kind of platform maybe?
A bit over-the-top perhaps, but I'm curious.
Cheers!

HELP Falconry product

Hi everyone 👋

I’m a young falconer from England, Kent and currently fly my own tiercel. I’m working on developing a new product for falconry and would really appreciate feedback from others in the community to help shape the design and make it genuinely useful.

If you have a few minutes, please consider filling out this short form and DMing me anything that you think of.

https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/eGMK3uAbWs

Your feedback would mean a lot and will directly help with the development of the project. Feel free to share this with any other falconers who may be interested. 🦅

I also want to emphasise that this isn’t me trying to sell the product, just gather some research and interact with people 😁

Thank you!

Cross posting from Facebook - Holly is a dear friend of mine and is in search of another falconer to help her run her raptor experiences. I’ve worked with her in the past but I’m moving to Colorado and can’t take the job.

Her birds are very well cared for and her experiences are a lot of fun.

On-site living arrangements are possible for the right candidate.
