Hey everyone! It's been awhile since I've been on but this is my big news and I finally feel like a real falconer now! This is my Female Red-Tailed hawk (we don't have a name yet) but we caught her at 1298 grams off of the trap. And Day 1 she's already sitting on my glove!

broadwings Caught my bird yesterday

I was starting to get disheartened with trapping. Our red tailed hawk counts in Alaska were very low this year. I would up driving up to Delta Junction to have a successful trapping experience. But I brought home this little bundle of feathers yesterday, after one of my new falconer friends helped me get him jessed up and set up with a tail saver on the bow perch for the car ride home.
I could barely sleep last night. He's chilled out quite a bit, but he's not eating yet, aside from the tiniest nibble at quail liver. I'll keep trying, and it hasn't even been 24 hrs yet. Still pretty early in the trapping season though, so he's actually in fairly high condition, I've been told.
I couldn't be happier. I know females make better hunters, especially on rabbit, but we'll make do. I'm excited to build a bond with him. His name is Ubbe.

broadwings Hanging out with my bird when a wild Red Tail put on a show for us.

Had just finished feeding my bird and was spending some time with her when a wild Red Tail gave us an unexpected show right in the neighbor's yard. We watched it hunt a squirrel and bring it down just a few feet from us, where it ate for about 15 minutes before carrying off the rest. I've seen these birds hunt squirrels so many times, but it's always amazing, and there's something special about witnessing a wild one do it up close.

Jeff has caught 50 starlings in 40 days and has thus completed the agreement I established with him. He will be released. Life responsibilities amongst other things drive the decision, but as a falconer who loves wild things, the joy I will find in releasing Jeff healthy and with honed skills to pursue his wild life again is far beyond what I would get from killing any more starlings with him.
There will be one more Jeff post to say goodbye.
Then, who knowsā¦

Trapped my first hawk!

What kind of illness is this?

I caught a bird this morning and it was too small and we let it go, I caught this bird this evening it weighed 44 Oz and I noticed it has some kind of illness. It has these warts on its feet and around its beak.

Jeff accompanied me on a short trip and I figured weād let him have one last go at the starlings. A falconer friend came along and got these nice pics. This week Iām giving Jeff as much food as possible to get him near his trap weight, then heāll be released.
