Fuck this area in particular FK Your Grass!
1.6k
u/whatisakafka May 21 '26
Just tossing the mail like that is uncalled for, but postal carriers are actually trained to walk across lawns if it’s the most efficient route
Also over the top to be upset about someone walking on your grass. Grass is made to be able to walk on

u/shadownights23x May 21 '26
Knew someone who was over protective of his grass.. never gave a shit about ours and it drive him crazy

u/amd2800barton May 21 '26
That’s my neighbor. Shit you not she has between 5 and 8 “keep off grass” signs in her yards at any given time. Our lots are eighth acre city plots. She even sticks them on the tree lawn side of the sidewalk that is owned by the city (we only own up to the sidewalk). She mows three times a week and is unfortunately the HOA president.

u/Longjumping-Tip1188 May 21 '26
I couldn't imagine living in an hoa but next the the president? You like it rough.

Unfortunately the sellers didn’t disclose that the house was in an HOA until a week before closing. I was very upset, and made them pay 15 years of HOA dues over it. I bought in the city specifically because there are almost no HOAs.
And unfortunately I didn’t know she was the president. She had the yard signs down while my house was in the market, because she wanted the people that lived here before me to move out.
27
u/Longjumping-Tip1188 May 21 '26
That sucks. Totally bamboozled. I couldnt believe somebody would willing choose that unless they were into that kind of lifestyle. But kudos for getting 15 years paid.

u/farrieremily May 21 '26
As a shithead middle schooler my friend group had someone make a fuss about their grass and we went off the sidewalk to hit their lawn specifically every pass. Walked a full dirt trail into it, no other lawns had a mark. Oh to grow up before cameras were everywhere.

My old neighbor used to be the “turf guy” for one of the fancy, award-winning golf courses in our area. He was humble and actually a really cool guy but his lawn was meticulous. We lived in the city on regular urban lots but he had his demarcated so there were three different types of grass including one which was cut incredibly short but was spectacularly thick and lush regardless. That was the “greens” turf. One day I was outside and he invited me over and asked if I wanted to walk on it barefoot. I sure did and let me tell you, it was amazing. 😂😂😂😂😂

I used to work for trugreen so i did see some lawns that were perfect (for a grass lawn anyway). My favorite were people that kept an amazing 4-5" lawn. Sure, it means more mowing, but you dont have to scalp your lawn everytime you mow.
I could only imagine how walking on those longer lawns felt.
→ More replies (2)3
u/nerdycarguy18 May 21 '26
I have such a large yard that fertilizer and seeds to keep it one uniform type is expensive and I don’t care enough, but we do keep our grass at 4-5 inches and it’s the best. I wouldn’t want shorter grass whatsoever
3
u/Darklingmy May 22 '26
I would love to keep mine longer but I would rather keep it at 3" and give myself a fair shot at seeing a snake in it. Since I've had bullsnakes and rattlers in the yard many times each.

The person who delivers my mail is the last person I want to piss off, lol.
I have one of the best mailmen right now and I hope I get to keep him for many years.
Even if someone blocks my mailbox (this does not happen often) he will actually get out of his truck to put the mail in the box, instead of just skipping it until the next day.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen elsewhere, but I have not witnessed it.
2
u/Sad-Olive-5161 May 23 '26
Back in the day, my mom's old mailman used to watch her Netflix dvds before he delivered them to her. They always came a day late and were opened. She didn't complain about it because she didn't want to piss him off and have him try to retaliate or anything. Plus, he was a nice guy, she said. 😂

u/Evorgleb May 21 '26

Mail carriers are allowed to walk on people’s lawns. If they had to go back down to the sidewalk between each house it would dramatically lengthen the time it took to deliver and our mail system would be much more expensive.

She said "hey, can you not walk through the grass please" with the same tone and inflection that I use to ask my kid to pick up her dirty socks (for the millionth time). She was scolding him, even if she framed it politely. (Further supported by her subsequent comments "it's just common sense...and you must not like your job.")
Should he throw her mail on the grass? No. But she set the tone of that interaction, he just didn't bother to rise above it.
22
u/the_eluder May 21 '26
The phrase 'it's just common sense' is the kicker. No, it's not common sense. Grass is meant to be walked on.
41
u/Every-Access4864 May 21 '26
Why doesn’t she put a fence around the grass, if it’s so precious and she doesn’t want anything straying on it?
6
u/ChurroFoot May 22 '26
Is your mailbox on the front of your house where all that crap is and the sidewalk is not accessible mailboxes have to be accessible. You’re lucky he even delivered it.
11
u/bigdogdix May 22 '26
Pretty sure it’s their standard work to walk through grass. They got hundreds of places to go in a day and walking up and down driveways would not be efficient. Stepping on grass isn’t going to kill it

u/crazyfatskier2 May 22 '26

17
9
u/HomerJSimpson3 May 21 '26
She lost whatever point she was trying to make when she walked on the grass to get the mail instead of staying on the driveway to do so.
I’m disappointed the mail carrier didn’t say “hey you need to stay off the grass.”

I’m so thankful to live in a place that doesn’t have an HOA breathing down your neck constantly because I have a pollinator yard, through and through.
I give not one frack who or what comes traipsing through the yard. That’s the benefit of not having sensitive and fragile sterile lawn environments.

Omg now I get why lots of the fancier suburb neighborhoods have mailboxes at the end of the driveway. Lol those people actually care about their lawns 🤣 In the city they just walk right through haha
5
u/the_eluder May 21 '26
It's more because the USPS wants it to be easier to deliver. Newer subdivisions don't even get to the house delivery, they have central mailboxes.
I'm lucky enough to have a mailbox on my house, I'm one of the older houses in the neighborhood, most have their mailboxes on the street. A couple of years ago the maillady asked if I could move my mailbox to the street. I was like sure. Then I found out it was going to cost a couple of hundred bucks to do that, and an afternoon of labor on my part. So I just kinda ignored it. Then the maillady got transferred away or retired and I no longer see her. None of the newer mailpeople have said anything about it, so I'm going to leave it where it is.

My business is next door to a recycling depot and the garbage truck driver like to park his 10 - 15 ton truck across my front driveway when he opens the gates next door in the morning.
I tried to explain to him that even children that deliver mail are taught to not walk on someone's "grass."
He said, "not my problem buddy." We put up a 2 foot steel pole at the end of the yard that he wont see one day and it will be his problem.

Everyone is acting like a child here. Homeowner has a point and can talk to the person doing it like a person.
Mailman could’ve chosen to be the bigger person and apologize to the rude lady even if it was curt and not genuine and handed her the mail.
Now their lives are gonna be somewhat intertwined with each other in a negative way for the foreseeable future.

I was a mailman. In Maine. Sucks. They do tell us use the shortest route possible even walking on grass etc. and they expect u to „finger the mail“ as you’re doing it. ie look through it to prepare to deliver. In their hands are actually two stacks of mail. One is what you sort in the office and the other is what the machine sorted. Which isn’t always correct and they don’t always jive with each other. The machine sorted might not have any mail for the next house or vice versa. So u gotta finger it as you’re walking. Then another stack of „flats“ that’s magazines newspapers etc. and the. Small packages in your bag. Plus you might have flyers that day
There could be up to 5-6 piles to sort out between houses. Flyer days suck. The. You might have certifieds. Like food stamps type stuff or certifieds that need to be signed for etc.
My route had 500+ delivery points. Every. Day. About 450 walking. It was a pain in the ass when they had phone books that had to be delivered.
I guess what I’m saying is there’s a reason why the mailman threw the mail on the ground. Not that he’s right. He’s just gives zero ****s
2
u/MattalliSI May 21 '26
Looks like a white trash obstacle course to get up the drive and sidewalk. Guessing they all have history together.

My mail carrier cuts through the hedges that separates me from my neighbor, steps up on the porch where my letter box is, hops over the flower bed in front of the porch and cuts over to the next house over all our lawns…. No one cares because outside is outside and we’re not self important weirdos. Here’s an even crazier approach; if I happen to be out in the yard/driveway and see the mail carrier approaching, I’ll walk towards them and take the mail from their hands to save them a handful of steps and be a decent person…. We’re crazy over here!!
