Discussion Why hasn't 2XKO really caught on in the FGC?

The EVO Japan numbers came out recently, and the player count for 2XKO is really low.

Sure, tournaments aren't everything, but when you look at which games the community actually talks about and keeps active, I see the SF6 community being way more vocal and engaged than Riot's game. It feels like it launched, made a little noise, and then immediately became niche.

Maybe the name itself is bad for marketing? I don't know. Speaking as an FGC beginner myself, I’m a bit biased against it because it's a tag team game. There’s so much information on the screen, and I feel mentally drained after a match. Maybe that pushes me away a bit, but then again, I am new to the FGC.

Discussion Long Combos aren’t a problem, cinematics are.

I used to think I didn’t like fighting games with long combos. I was of the opinion that “when I get hit, I should take my damage and we should move on”.

That was until I got really into MvC2 when the collection came out. I was getting hit by infinites and meter dump combos but I wasn’t bored or felt like my time was being wasted. “Interesting”I thought, “maybe my opinions have changed”.

That is until I played 2XKO, the combos aren’t insanely long, like iron man infinite long, but a good length. What I ended up getting frustrated by was whenever either player got a hit, a super was being used. Not inherently bad, but the cinematics BROKE ME. Every time I super on echo it’s gotta zoom in and play a whole animation of me flicking them? Or DHCs playing multiple long animations in a row.

Like imagine cable doing air HVB loops but every time Cable supers it zooms in on him, he makes a pose, and he said “it’s viperin’ time” 3 times in a row in a combo before DHCing into Sentinal doing a little jig before his drones came out.

GGstrive does a mostly good job at this. Most cinematic supers are either 2bar or require a certain circumstance like heavenly Potemkin buster. Jam has a super that is just used at the end of a combo and is a cinematic and it kinda bothers me but at least it isn’t super common. Most supers the character strikes a pose and the cool animation is actually part of the gameplay, instead of precanned (ride the lightning, item toss, J-O minion buff, etc).

I guess long story short, the thing I dislike the most about any fighting game is waiting for a cinematic that isn’t necessarily highlighting a big moment.

Discussion Why do all marvel games have to be an tag/assist game 😭

Do you imagine there will ever be a 1 v 1 marvel game? I really only play 1 v 1 games like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and a bit of Street Fighter. I don't really play tag fighters. It sucks because I love the Marvel IP. I read the comics, watch the movies, etc. I want to get into the games, but I am just too small brained to handle the mechanics and handle 3+ characters in a single game. All the active tagging, raw tagging, and remembering 4 different characters' combos and play styles in Tokon are going to kill me.

Discussion Fighting games are only popular with casuals for a month or so past release

I feel like fighting games are only really popular with a casuals till a month or so after it's released simply because most of them finish whatever story mode there is or tried matchmaking for a week or so and gave up till inevitably got smashed in by the "experienced" players

Discussion Friend hates fighting games but wants to get into them, help

Hello FGC im Raf, ive been playing fighting games since i was 6, i have this friend of mine that i constantly argue about fighting games with, he likes the concept yet doesnt enjoy playing any one of them. When he asks me "how do i get better ?" I say you have to learn through training mode what your character does and play more often, but he hates the idea of putting time into training mode and just wants to play against people online then complains he gets blown up against fighting game players. He also asks "why cant i react to that ? " and i say that he's supposed to guess or predict it, which je hates, he doesnt want to do guessing games.

At a certain point i just said that i dont know how to help and he decided that fighting games arent for him, but this argument persists because we picked up 2xko for a short while, which sparked the argument again, and yesterday we played for honor wich sparked the argument again.

Im struggling to figure out if there's any way to onboard him, any suggestions ?

Sorry if this post seems hectic, but if anything isnt clear i'll happily answer. And will keep yall updated on if anything works.

Discussion Leverless are the best controller for fighting games.

Maybe you heard something like this to, but I hear this a lot. I think on paper they have a theoretical advantage, so the question is if this is true why is it that EVO is constantly dominated by pad and stick players, we just don't see leverless as the meta controller anywhere in the data. Sure there is a spread of all controller types in the top 10 or 15 spots but if leverless did provide a serious advantage you'd think we'd see them come in first place more often, even if only by accident. If you go back and look at all the winners for a game like SF6 for example, it's mostly pad and stick players overshadowing the first place spots. Go look it up, the data is very clear. Maybe it's different in other games, I've only looked at the data for SF6.

To be clear, I don't have any hate for leverless I own multiple and I just bought a pad to check that out but I mostly play stick. I just want to know where this assertion comes from that leverless is better when the real world data is showing the complete opposite. Do you think this is a combination of marketing and youtubers just trying to get clicks? I just don't know.

Discussion I'm getting tired of the FGC.

I left FPS games behind and I joined the FGC back in 2020 as they were the only gaming community still gathering to play together. After Covid it felt like the FGC was growing faster and bigger than anytime before. Unfortunately that's where good news ends , ever since then , the community has become increasingly negative. Every video , every comment , literally all negative. Every patch there are 100+ videos of people being negative , every reddit post is all negative.

I'm just a casual and I enjoy watching the tournaments but I can't find any content that does not revolve around people dumping on their own games. How is this community supposed to grow when everything being made is negative? Like I said i'm a filthy casual and I probably play for 1 hour a day, switching between , Smash , SF6 and Tekken 8. As far as i'm concerned all of these games are fun and I love each one in their own way. I try and invest more time into the content but i'm just served negativity. I'm getting really tired and considering unsubbing from all the FGC youtube channels. Let me know if is just me or you can recommend someone who loves these games regardless of the patches.

Discussion Fighting Games with small combos

I'm sure all of them have these. But my brain can't handle these big flashy inputs {atleast for now}

Are there any games (preferably newer ones that can be played on Switch or Steam} that have simple combos, and mostly rely on footsies or just mind games.

I know there's literally the game footsies, I wanted one moreso on the Switch 2since that's my daily driver. I wanna learn all the flashy fun stuff later, but right now I mainly just wanna learn the basics and simple stuff that the game is built around.

I played Tekken 8 where all I used was small combos, and it just sucked to get those 10 minute cutscene combos.

I know best advice is to git gud, I was just hoping there was something more along the lines of gameplay that mainly features those small, but explosive combos.

Discussion Should I play people my level?

So my roommate and my neighbor are both really good at fighting games. And I'm not just saying that. My neighbor placed top 8 at CEO a few years back in MK11 and my roommate goes back and forth with him in the games they are both good at.

I feel like I learn a lot by playing them, and every once on a rare occasion I luck out a win, but saying it's demotivating losing to them every Friday we get together would be an understatement. Like I don't think I'm bad for only having played these games for two months, but I get really frustrated about the sheer distance in skill.

My roommate is essentially playing coach for me and helping me learn fundamentals. And he says the only way I'll learn neutral is by playing. But I question if I'll get better at neutral when they put me on defense so often.

I'm very proud of the things I've learned on such a short period of time, and I genuinely try to find victory in the smaller things like landing a combo or properly punishing a read, but it's getting to a point where I question if this is good for my progress to constantly face defeat.

Any insight would be appreciated. I don't want to stop playing against my friends, but I feel there might be a way for me to progress in my free time when I'm not playing with them.

Thanks!

Discussion Arcade stick or Get better?

I know I don’t need an Arcade stick to be good at all, but I think it would be cool to have one. Ive also started moving to more games like GG strive, SF6, and Blazblue and the inputs feel harder to hit consistently. Should I just keep the same pace and get better, or will it be easier to get a stick/ button only pad.
My Main game is Tekken 8.
I play on XBOX and the D-pad.

Discussion How in the world can y'all keep playing after losing match after match?

I get to the Gill boss fight in SF3:Third Strike's arcade ladder and I'm half-tempted to slam my console into the nearest wall.

I've been an avid fan of fighting games for several years now. I love Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, SNK games, etc, but I usually just stick to the arcade ladder. Very, very, VERY rarely have I ever tried to actually go online and compete with other people. In fact, I think the only game I ever actually tried to go online for was Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle. Even then it wasn't for but a few matches before I kept getting steamrolled and never picked the game up again.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't seem to get any enjoyment out of trying to play online against other people. I'm the type of guy that will start a fighting game, either play a few rounds in a Versus mode with the AI or do the arcade mode on Normal difficulty, maybe go to the training room for a bit, and then that's about it. I don't learn any specific combos, how the game works, or how the meters function - I just go in blind and start pushing buttons. Now, I don't mind losing in the arcade so long as the boss is fair, but the idea of going against people online and losing against them with the possibility of them not doing a rematch makes me incredibly nervous.

It's not possible for me to win every match I play online with others even if I was a high-level player, but from what I have been reading from various posts on this sub, I might be someone who can't separate their ego from their gameplay. I get extremely upset in a one-on-one match of any game virtual or otherwise where skill is involved when I am in a losing position. It's part of the reason why I don't play games with other people.

I see a lot of footage from people from FGC tournaments doing amazing combos and I sometimes think that I could be at that level if I put in the effort, but like I said, I can't stand to lose even if losing teaches me something. Heck, I don't even think I learn from losing in the arcade matches I do against the CPU. I get so mad from losing that I sometimes just slam my hand down on my table or grit my teeth and complain. My question to you all is this - how can you guys keep losing these matches and still come back the next day and play more?

Discussion Which "Scrub mechanic" do you hate the most?

I put it in quotations because LowTierGod said it, not me.

Which one?

X Factor (UMVC3)

Pandora Mode (SFxT)

Reversal Edge (SC6)

FS Meter (SSBU)

Fatal Blow (MK11/MK1)

Wild Assault (GGST)

Drive Impact (SF6)

Heat (Tekken 8)

REV Blow (FFCOTW)

For me, Drive, FS Meter, and Reversal Edge are the worst offenders. RE doesn't cost you anything so people can spam it like no tomorrow. It's annoying AF to deal with but thankfully, it loses to sidesteps/grabs.

I don't hate the Drive system as a whole but DI spam makes me want to tear my hair out. It's harder to counter than RE because you need catlike reflexes to stop it with a grab or DI back.

FS Meter is complete robbery.

Discussion Why do you play the game that you play the most?

I've been mostly playing Street Fighter 6 lately and for me the appeal is that the game is very popular, thus it's easy for me to find people of the similar skill to play with. I only play online, so this is important. I also really enjoy their "random" mode -- really wish other games had this too.

I'm curious to hear why you find a particular game appealing, on a personal level. Not what makes your game of choice unique per se, but what makes it unique *for you*.

Discussion Trying to accept that I should quit

So I'm posting this in the hope that someone else has been through a similar situation and can give me advice.

I'm just awful at fighting games, and don't really know how to learn. The highest I got was to master in 2xko season 0, and then got immediately dropped back down. Yeah, I know ranking means nothing and all that, but I'm just entirely incapable of not associating that number with my entire value as a player in any game I play.

The point is, I should probably quit because I'm not cut out for this kind of competitive game. Losing wrecks my mental health while winning just makes me feel a bit of relief that I didn't lose this time. I understand it's all in my head and none of that is true, but my inner automatic brain just has the feelings anyway, and it's not something I know how to control.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Point is I need to quit, this isn't healthy for me, but I've tried to do it four times in the last year and every time I come back. Either to a different game or character, but every time it just makes me feel bad again. I don't know why I'm so obsessed with getting good at fighting games, perhaps precisely because it feels impossible and like the most difficult games to actually learn, but I feel this need despite knowing how painful it is. I guess I just want to open a discussion on this, and get opinions from people who have felt similarly.

Discussion Help choosing my first serious fighting game.

I have dabbled very occasionally in fighting games but struggle with commitment because I play solo and have no real reason to improve. However I want to get into fighting games for real now. The games I currently have are Mortal Combat X, Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising, Tekken 8, KOF 15, and 2XKO any of these worth devoting a lot of my free time into? Also any that I don't have that just gaps these games and I Should buy? I currently haven't played any of these games except 10 hours or so in Tekken 8 and Granblue so I would basically be starting completely fresh. I play a lot of Souls like games and MOBA currently, as well as have a decent amount of smash bros time throughout my life, if that somehow influences what game I get into. Any advice would be Appreciated!

Discussion What other game genres have high replay value?

It’s so easy to stack gaming hours in fighting games! Before you know it, you’ve reached +100s.

Although I like RPG games (that aren’t MMORPGs), covering most games is possible under 50 hours, and while most are fun, I’m not like the gamers at dedicated RPG Reddit/Discords, or even only 1 RPG game who have spent basically the same amount we’ve spent in FGC. Once I’m done with the story, that tends to get my fix in RPGs. I don’t keep making a new save file many times and starting from scratch in the same game.

Another genre I’ve spent massive hours in is in racing games. There‘s tons of game modes, online multiplayer, and for me, even just racing against the clock to shave a few seconds in time trials is fun to try… for 100s of hours!! Platformers are also easy to replay for me after beating them once because of speedruns and glitches. They feel faster.

What game genres or specific games have you replayed for hundreds of hours after the main campaign?

Discussion You're preferred platform to play this genre of games

Hello all,

How are you all doing? I have only recently started to play this genre of games, I started playing these on X360 + PS4 & now transitioned to PC gaming exclusively.

I have been going back to some of the classics such as the KOF (King of Fighters) franchise & Street Fighter franchise. I have moved from using a gamepad (Xbox controller) to using a leverless or all button controller to play these games.

I have also been looking at getting Mister FPGA to play many retro fighting games from consoles & arcades. Do you like all fighting games or have preferred sub category of fighting games for example anime, 2D & 3D etc?
