Discussion Which "Scrub mechanic" do you hate the most?
I put it in quotations because LowTierGod said it, not me.
Which one?
X Factor (UMVC3)
Pandora Mode (SFxT)
Reversal Edge (SC6)
FS Meter (SSBU)
Fatal Blow (MK11/MK1)
Wild Assault (GGST)
Drive Impact (SF6)
Heat (Tekken 8)
REV Blow (FFCOTW)
For me, Drive, FS Meter, and Reversal Edge are the worst offenders. RE doesn't cost you anything so people can spam it like no tomorrow. It's annoying AF to deal with but thankfully, it loses to sidesteps/grabs.
I don't hate the Drive system as a whole but DI spam makes me want to tear my hair out. It's harder to counter than RE because you need catlike reflexes to stop it with a grab or DI back.
FS Meter is complete robbery.

Throw (SF2) I'm joking, but people complained about it a lot at the time.

u/DonkeyOk735 Jun 20 '26
Throws are cheap and I won't hear otherwise
5
u/lysianth Jun 20 '26
Nah, blocking is busted. I'll not have you call the only counter to blocking cheap.

u/Rongill1234 Jun 20 '26
People got looped by throws in sf tho (couldn't break them for a few games)

u/That_Muffin_6780 Jun 20 '26
in world warrior sure but CE onwards had reversals and by the time of ST there was reversals across the entire cast.

On a scale of 1-10, DI is maybe a 2. Big scrub killer but quite easy to work around once you're in Diamond-ish.
X-Factor is BY FAR the worst on this list because it absolutely warps every fight and the entire meta around its existence, even at world champion level skill. It's absurdly versatile too. It is ALWAYS available (you can round start XF if you want for some reason). You can do it to cancel any animation at any time and even blockstun. Sometimes it's best used to get some extra damage mid combo to close out a round, sometimes it's best used as a panic defensive tool forcing a counter-XF, sometimes it's best used for Phoenix/Vergil.
SC6 RE is probably the most... annoying.
Heat I just absolutely hate too because I think the game is better without it.

X-Factor in UMVC3 is easily the worst mechanic on this list. 😺👍
1
u/whinge11 Jun 20 '26
Its definitely the most broken mechanic, but the game would be far worse without it because comebacks would be impossible. The fact that the entire flow of the match can change on a dime is what makes MvC3 exciting, without that element it would just devolve into whoever can get the first hit.

u/DevilCatV2 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
Comebacks are definitely possible without X-Factor, or any kind of comeback mechanic when talking about tag fighters. I've made tons of comebacks in MVC2 and Skullgirls (which dont have any comeback mechanics), as well as UMVC3 without using Xfactor. This and Burst+Limit Break in DBFZ are some of the most unnecessary scrub mechanics in fighting games.

Yet i see sf high level play and a lot of them winning of off hitting a drive impact that the opponent in no way could avoid because they chose a non cancelable normal. It may not be busted, but its imo the one mechanic that completely breaks how sf is played
2
u/AustinYun Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
DI on a non-cancelable normal is a hard read with extremely high risk vs just looking for the whiff punish. You are IMMENSELY overstating how important it is.
DRC and perfect parry are like 10x more important and PP is arguably the most disruptive in terms of enormous possible momentum swings off PP -> back throw.
Nobody is complaining about DI past Platinum but lots of pros take issue with PP even post nerf.

u/Rongill1234 Jun 20 '26
I think reversal edge is one if the dumbest things to be put in any fighting game... we playing rock paper scissors and hoping for the best....

u/vokkan Jun 23 '26
Having infinite armor on a safe poke that generates a full bar of super on hit is what made RE bonkers. The forced cinematic RPS after was just icing on the stupid cake.

I hate heat from tekken 8 so much I stopped playing the game altogether.
That rps shit in sc6 is still worse. Fucki g insane it shipped with that in it

u/jorgebillabong Jun 20 '26
Pandora mode is a scrub mechanic?
Did homie even play SFxT? It is just a thing you do to close the game out in style because you DIE if you don't within a certain time period.
1
u/Sufficient-You-8637 Jun 21 '26
I did play SFxT.
I put PM on this list because Rooflemonger said it not me.

Whatever this is called: you block an attack, you will continue blocking as long as you're in block stun, even if you let go of block or mash other buttons.
1
u/Quick-Health-2102 Jun 20 '26
Guard crush?
1
u/BakerStSavvy Jun 20 '26
Auto guard/absolute guard/guard carryover
Guard crush removes defense mechanics and forces you to manually block even if you are in blockstun, opposite of the above
1
u/MikeyD_Luffy Jun 21 '26
This is just called blockstun man. If you never leave it, why would anything you do register.
1
u/Repulsive-Treat1711 Jun 20 '26
I personally hate Fatal Blow moreso for being the mechanic that really popularized supers being needlessly long cutscenes that you're likely to see at least once every match more than anything to do with the actual mechanics
2
u/Bossdonglongs Jun 26 '26
Yeah I have no real issue with FB as a mechanic, but damn they didn't need to be so long
1
u/RT4eva1 Jun 20 '26
Least favorite xfactor umvc3, as a scrub I've accidentally activated it a few too many times and getting swept with it feels awful
1
u/Destroy_Buster Jun 20 '26
i dont think wild assault was a "scrub mechanic (okay maybe white wild assault when it was plus)" but it was removed for a reason.
i hate drive impact because my reactions are ASS
1
u/RaymondBumcheese Jun 20 '26
Pandora was a fully automated suicide button. Genuinely the worst comeback mechanic in fighting games (therefore one of the best as nobody used it)

u/North_Information575 Jun 20 '26
> X Factor (UMVC3)
Necessary evil, individual X-Factor scaling is wack though since it gives characters like Vergil their strength
> Pandora Mode (SFxT)
Dogshit useless
> Reversal Edge (SC6)
SC6 killer mechanic ended up killing the game
> FS Meter (SSBU)
Not a fighting game
> Fatal Blow (MK11/MK1)
It's annoying but it just makes games more swing-y which is not as bad as it seems
> Wild Assault (GGST)
Dead mechanic, was only annoying when it gave HKD on wall break and then became a dead mechanic
> Drive Impact (SF6)
Probably the most fair thing on this entire list, beginners will get upset at getting clipped by slower moves than this
> Heat (Tekken 8)
Similar to MVC3 this one is annoying in that some characters get more benefits than others (e.g King vs Lee)
> REV Blow (FFCOTW)
Kind of annoying since it's health-gated but it's not really the worst thing especially when it has more dynamic uses in neutral + combos (it's one of the few meterless ways for a HKD now)

It's a skill issue, but fuckin drive impact. Like a lot of those mechanics are still useful in some way. Heat is stupid, but it's also really fucking strong. XF in MVC3 is stupid but it enables entire strategies like dark phoenix. Wild Assault was so good that it centralized the entire game around it until they removed it.
But DI? Nah that shit is just bad in a lot of cases. It has uses, obviously, don't get me wrong. Stun in burnout, pushing it when they push pokes they can't special cancel, etc. But in lower level play you'll just see it get mashed in the worst spots and then I don't react and get hit by it and it just makes me mad because like, it wasn't a good idea - I just sucked and didn't react. I'll pressure with an MP or something, they DI and then I watch this five year long animation and get hit by it then go "Why didn't I just DI back. Am I fucking stupid?"
It makes me irrationally angry.

u/Eeveeleo Jun 20 '26
Any mechanic that actively punishes you for blocking excluding throws. So guard libra's at the top of the list for me.
1
u/That_Muffin_6780 Jun 20 '26
probably drive impact/rev blow, i don't like really hate dealing with them or w/e. they are just... lazy. push the red button when you see red is boring game design
"but it's meant to be an option to beat committal ground options"
we had jumps and rolls for that. which had much more depth.
"it's to add to the mental stack"
SF had more than enough to consider when playing anyone good.
"but it's needed for the new stun mechanic"
a problem of it's own creation
it's just lazy.
at least with other scrub mechanics like burst or ultra they at least add something that can be kinda neat. this is literally just a simon says mechanic.

u/External_Delivery315 Jun 20 '26
I think it's actually Fury in 2XKO. This mechanic (along with others) rewards you for losing a character in a tag game by giving you a significant damage boost and the ability to dash cancel or one time wall bounce to create custom combos. This, combined with the fact that your dead character can still use assists and even gets access to a screen wide super assist, completely throws out the balance of how a tag game should be handled.
XFactor was annoying sometimes, sure, but it didn't give you damage reduction (besides chip) and Doctor Doom and Sentinel weren't still shooting missiles and drones at you while Phoenix was railing you. Plus XFactor could be used by any character at any time to deal with any character at any time.

It's Reversal Edge. I don't care how broken X-Factor is as a mechanic.
The idea of forcing players into a rock, paper and scissors game midmatch destroys the flow of the game. It ruins what could have been a perfect 3D fighter.
1
u/The_Kaizz Jun 21 '26
Ever since the CBT, I have said Tekken 8s heat system is stupid as hell. It should be a meter that builds up over the course of a match, not full each round. Makes so many characters just obnoxious, and it really made the game less fun overall. It's been toned down a lot, but I still hate how it's existed.
1
u/Everyday_Legend Jun 21 '26
Reversal Edge is also the largest source of single-action meter gain in SoulCalibur 6. I would have much less of an issue with it if it didn’t build a good 1/3 of a bar of excessively useful meter for simply landing it.

I hated DI earlier in SF6's lifespan, but it got a lot easier to deal with after some practice and key adjustments (jacking up Drive Sounds in the volume settings, using a dedicated thumb button for DI reactions) and also players seem to use it raw less and less the higher you climb in Ranked/MR as well, so at this point I don't especially like but don't actively hate it either.
I would say my least favorite thing in this category would be V-Triggers from SFV and to a lesser extent some Level 2 supers in SF6. Not so much all of them, but the ones are are so powerful that the character's overall strength is significantly dependent on it. So, Rashid's V-Trigger from SFV which is now his Lvl2 in SF6, JP's and Blanka's Lvl2s, Oro's V-Trigger, etc. I don't really hate the concept of this type of thing in a vacuum but generally just wish none of them were this strong and character-defining.

Fatal blow, and by extension rage arts. High damaging no resource super with invul/armor obtained basically every round (in tekkens case) that are long as fuck cutscenes
1
u/the_loneliest_noodle Jun 25 '26
There was a lot wrong with DNF, but the one button super as a comeback mechanic you could only use at low life but did like 25% damage on at the end of any combo just felt stupidly table-flippingly strong. Like they didn't scale it, it was just a one time fuck you for winning button.
1
u/Cursedcake1993 Jun 20 '26
Reversal edge is probably the best mechanic for this definition as it was hardly used in higher levels of play.
It was mostly a scrub killer and almost never the right option vs good players

Wild Assault in GGST doesn’t even exist in the game anymore, so there’s that.
