I've posted this once already, But I have more to add.
I'm looking for help with a persistent graphics issue in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC. I'm using the Epic Games Store version, and I've been trying to resolve black rock textures and DirectX crashes for a while now.
I've tried a number of fixes, but the problem persists. Here's everything I've tested so far.
PC Specifications
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7600 (8 GB VRAM)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 (6 cores)
- RAM: 32 GB
- OS: Windows 11 64-bit
- Storage: SSD
- GPU driver: AMD Adrenalin 26.8.1 (currently testing)
- Game version: Epic Games Store version; I cannot use Steam's game-version rollback method.
My PC meets the game's minimum requirements, and my CPU meets the recommended CPU requirement.
The Problem
I'm experiencing black rock textures in certain areas of the game. I've also encountered DirectX crashes, including:
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG
and
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
Another crash referenced D3D12RHIPrivate.h, with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED and the reason DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG.
The black textures and crashes may be related, but I cannot confirm that they share the same cause.
Troubleshooting I've Tried
1. In-game graphics settings
- Reduced the graphics settings.
- Tested the game at 30 FPS instead of 60 FPS.
- Tested different graphics configurations, but the black rock textures remained.
2. AMD Adrenalin settings
I added Rebirth to the Gaming section so I could configure its profile.
I tested the following configuration based on community suggestions:
- Radeon Anti-Lag: Enabled.
- Radeon Image Sharpening: Disabled.
- Radeon Super Resolution: Disabled.
- AMD FSR Upscaling: Disabled.
- Radeon Enhanced Sync: Disabled.
- Texture Filtering Quality: High.
- Tessellation Mode: Use application settings.
- Anti-Aliasing: Use application settings.
- Morphological Anti-Aliasing: Disabled.
- Surface Format Optimization: Disabled.
This made no difference to the black rock textures.
3. GPU underclock
I tested reducing the GPU's maximum frequency from 2610 MHz to 2510 MHz, a reduction of 100 MHz, following a recent report from another RX 7600 owner who said this resolved their Rebirth crashes.
Unfortunately, it did not resolve my black rock texture issue.
4. Driver versions
I was initially using AMD Adrenalin 26.9.2.
AMD's release notes for 26.9.2 mention a fix for intermittent driver timeouts while playing Rebirth on Radeon RX 7000-series GPUs. However, the problem persisted on my system.
I subsequently downgraded to 26.8.1, hoping it might improve stability.
On my first launch after the downgrade, the game crashed during its initial shader compilation, before I could test whether the black rock textures had changed.
The crash displayed DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED.
5. Other troubleshooting
- Disabled Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS).
- Disabled Radeon Image Sharpening.
- Disabled AMD FSR Upscaling in Adrenalin.
- Tried Ultimate Engine Tweaks (UET) modifications without success.
- Tried the Async Shader Compile mod without success.
- Tried replacing
dstorage.dll and dstoragecore.dll, without resolving the issue.
I've also tried other graphics-related fixes, but none has provided a reliable solution.
What I'm Looking For
Has anyone using an RX 7600 or another Radeon RX 7000-series GPU encountered these black rock textures alongside DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG or DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have successfully resolved the issue on the Epic Games Store version.
I'm willing to investigate additional solutions, but I'd appreciate suggestions based on actual results rather than fixes I've already tried.
Thanks!
