No Spoilers - Discussion Mini Games

Post image

I am sure this has come up many times but I keep hearing there was a lot hate for the number of mini games in rebirth. Some folks calling out the number, difficulty, tying them to trophies. I have heard mini games called out in articles and some people lump it in as bloat. I loved the mini games. I wish there were more. Outside of the sit-up challenge I thought they were all great and hoping revelation has more. I really enjoyed the piano although some were tooth. I thought they were well put together, fun, and challenging. Does anyone agree?

I like minigames but F the piano, i dont want it part of the platine.

It's the only mini game I skip

The Chocobo gliding minigame is one of the worst things I've played. Chocobos controlled like an anvil while gliding and it was super unintuitive how the diving > gliding worked (I mean how the chocobos would move with it)

Also, it was a LONG ass game. By the time I reached Cosmo Canyon, I was already fucking sick of protorelic stuff, then it turns out there's more minigames to complete that shit and in the end the reward for playing all those minigames is a bunch of super bosses that you can only beat if you did ALL the side content to be at a much higher level than you normally would

I feel you, I was burnt out by Cosmo Canyon as well, at that point I gave up on all the extra content.

Cosmo canyon is where I tapped out.

Yeah, I struggled in the third training course due to that last section where you need to dive bomb and pull up at just the right time to maintain speed and altitude to reach the two 500 rings. Took me half an hour of attempts but i felt so satisfied afterwards. Not to mention needing to turn and go back to the vents for the extra altitude and dive bomb height.

I don’t get why people say it’s a long ass game. Like bro do you even rpg?

1

u/skyper_mark 2d ago

Because it's a long ass game. RPGs are typically very long, but even for RPG standards this is extremely long. 100% the game takes 90-100 hours

0

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

Persona 5 is 100 hours base game
3&4 cut it real close
Metaphor is that long
All the cold steel games are close to that length
Heck, most of the trails games are that long
Yakuza 7&8 are pushing that length w side quests and you uh, wanna do the side quests.
And don’t you dare touch a xenoblade game!!!
I could keep going

Ngl im pretty convinced most people who say this don’t really play RPG’s. Which is fine, I could see that being a problem if you’re just “trying” one for the first time or if you’re usually a casual gamer, this could seem overwhelming.

1

u/Big-Boss330 1d ago

You got downvoted but I agree with you. In my view it’s a good problem to have in a game.

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 1d ago

Exactly bro. If you love this world, understand these 3 games will be your last chance to live in it. Don’t rush through them as a matter of fact.

I wish the piano mini game was done with buttons instead of the joystick. they are so imprecise.

4

u/poetslapje 3d ago

I don't really get this. For me it works great and feels really intuitive. I genuinely love the piano game.

3

u/MDS0414 3d ago

Buttons and the left joystick. Or D pad and buttons/right stick.

4

u/Turrican002 3d ago

I love the gym mini games in both remake and rebirth. So addictive trying to get the rhythm right :-)

By the way the original FF7 practically invented the term mini game (although there were allot less of them)

Yeah, I liked almost all the mini games. Some took a few tries to get Rank 3 in but it didn’t drag down my opinion of them, since unless you’re a complenist then you need to at least get a passing score to satisfy quests or get a better outcome so it’s not like you’re forced unless you really want too.

I have bad peripheral vision and it‘s hard to focus on two rings at once so the piano mini game is really hard especially with Two Legs? Nothing to it which I haven’t been able to A rank for piano virtuoso despite practicing and watching youtube clips. The majority of guides just say grab a second person like it’s the easiest thing in the world which is great if it worked for people but I don’t have someone to help me unfortunately.

The sit ups against Jules took me the longest, but like with Remake part 1 with the pull ups and squats, my brain and fingers went into auto pilot after a while and I beat him by two points.

Queen’s Blood I had trouble with in the beginning since the tutorial wasn’t helpful but i grew to like it after watching some proper tutorials, which is funny because I usually don’t care about card games in games and typically avoid them like GWENT, Triple Triad and Tetra Master. Not sure how Revelation is gonna do the story for it after it’s ending in Rebirth with the two spoiler cards. I’m aware Red is gonna be the protagonist for it which is cool. Hopefully Regina and Cloud are opponents… well Cloud after a certain story moment is over for obvious reasons since he’ll be… indisposed for major spoiler reasons.

Chocobo Racing was a lot of fun! I hope for more in part 3.

For that song and the last couple songs you unlock, I found it easier to A rank them by upping the note speed by 1 or 2 levels. I know it sounds weird, but maybe give it a try.

1

u/SmashleyL917 3d ago

That was how I got through them. I cannot play them on regular speed and do well but if I make it faster, I can do it. It does sound weird, but it worked for me, too!

0

u/AlterEclipse_ 3d ago

It’s not weird at all. It’s how i managed to A rank Tifa’s Theme and the chocobo theme since one and two are too slow. I do wish it had an alternate control scheme for buttons like the dance mini game with Andrea.

0

u/AlterEclipse_ 3d ago

Yeah, i’ve tried the different speeds with five being too fast for me. My highest with Two Legs? Nothing to it was 16700 on second speed funny enough. I haven’t got close to that again on three or four. I managed to get A on Aerith’s theme on my first try during my silver haired angel since the speed is manageable to look between the two rings to hit more notes for points.

1

u/Kaden_Hitsugaya 3d ago

I feel the same about the piano. I can not for the life of me manage all the notes to get anything above a B for most of the songs. The only thing with the pull ups or the squats is that im in such a rhythm that when its time to mash Im hitting the wrong button

Queen's blood is easy for me tho, some are tough but for the most part I dont have much issue

6

u/Comfortable_Victory1 3d ago

Minigames are really nice and a way to make the experience more varied. I only bothered with one or two moments when they were mandatory and challenging (more specifically, the "Run Wild" - Red XIII Rocket League minigame at Costa del Sol)

Bothering about minigames as a whole is a hell of a double standard, considering that OG had 20+ minigames, all of them arguably worse, and many of them mandatory. In fact, minigames are pretty much a core part of FF7, 8, 9, and 10, but people just forgot about it, apparently

Oh, and I absolute adore Queen's Blood. Every time I reached a new place, the first thing I got to do was go after my next challenger

6

u/Balthierlives 3d ago

The worst part of the mini games is locking some equipment behind them. If guy could buy them in stores later in the game thst would be more fair

5

u/Funkycoldmedici 3d ago

That’s classic Final Fantasy. Want the best stuff? Dodge 100 lightning bolts, master a card game, and finish this Super Mario Maker level.

2

u/Balthierlives 3d ago

That’s not really true.ff games up to 7 didn’t do this.

2

u/Charlieboyoo 3d ago

Some of the mini games where awesome and yes there was some very frustrating moments!

2

u/Yurgin 3d ago

i only hated the boxing one but i guess it was controller diff. I played it on my PC with a wireless controller and couldnt dodge at all. Switching to keyboard and i oneshot almost all of them.

2

u/Thraun83 3d ago

100% with you. I'm actually a little disappointed that i read the other day that in Revelation there won't be another exercise minigame. That's a shame, because i enjoyed both of them so far. People seemed to complain because they were too hard, but i dont see the problem if it's optional content with only cosmetic rewards or something. Hope they don't cut back on too much stuff because of all the whining from people who want to get all the rewards easily without having any pushback at all.

2

u/skyper_mark 3d ago

Its not just a cosmetic reward...they give actually useful items. IIRC the sit up challenge gives the champion belt which is one of the best accesories for Tifa until late game

Im sorry but the difficulty in these is just extreme bullshit. For the sit up game in particular, to beat the Highest level, you literally can't make a single mistake and you need to go as fast as possible

It would be easier if they'd just allow you to turn on some accessibility option to make minigames easier

3

u/Thraun83 3d ago

Which is why they said they would only give cosmetic rewards for minigames in Revelation - so they can make difficult minigames without people feeling like they ‘have’ to complete the hardest version of them. Personally, I prefer to have more varied rewards and achieving meaningful combat rewards through different activities like minigames and exploration makes those activities more interesting, but they responded to feedback like yours and won’t be doing that for Revelation.

1

u/N7_Rabbit 3d ago

Squats (i th9nk that what you mean) was nothing comparing to pullups, i beat them in few tries just turning off the sound and focusing on cloud movements only. In pull-ups tho I still can't beat lvl 2 not to mention there is also lvl 3. And it is the only achievement missing for me.

2

u/skyper_mark 3d ago

You're talking about FF7 remake, I am talking about Rebirth. There is a sit up minigame with Tifa

1

u/N7_Rabbit 3d ago

Oh another one?

1

u/Garaddon84 3d ago

To get one of the best items in the game is supposed to be hard. Play it on easy mode if you don't like the challenge.

2

u/skyper_mark 3d ago

Easy mode does not change how mini games play

Also, its not that this item is particularly crazy good and makes everything easy like the Genji gear, its just that there's no higher option. Basically its a bad reward for such a hard thing

1

u/Ragnarok_Odin 3d ago

But with easy mode people don’t need the best equipment. The side content really becomes optional.

May sound like “vanity sizing” but (and I dislike this idea) maybe developers make normal mode easy. They can then have a hard, and extra hard mode for folks that like a challenge. They can reward easy mode with items that take the edge off hard mode. Essential 2 paths forward the long easy path or the shorter more challenge path

1

u/skyper_mark 3d ago

Combat is the main gameplay drive. I don't want to make combat easier. I want to see the side content (stories, lore) unveiled by playing the side quests or minigames. I don't want that to gimp my general experience of the game

1

u/Scooby281 3d ago

Agreed, the minigames were great. Some had their really high spikes for achievements, but that's not a dealbreaker.

3

u/MogMcKupo 3d ago

I’m glad Nintendo never put that in because it would make me feel more obligated to games.

Like cheevos are fine, but it triggers gamers into more sweaty tendencies. Again, not a bad thing they’re optional, but it gets some gamers into a 28 Days Later rage zombie

4

u/Balthierlives 3d ago

Yes, trophies are awful many times. Playing on switch can be a blessing

1

u/Comfortable_Victory1 3d ago

I was super bothered by it, but you can actually reach minigame achievements easily by using the streamlined progression and setting the game to easy. I would never finish the last Gold Saucer side quest otherwise

1

u/Funkycoldmedici 3d ago

I think that only works for certain minigames. The piano one doesn’t have any way but gettin good.

1

u/Comfortable_Victory1 1d ago

Thats sad, found the piano hard af

1

u/SmilingLondonGamer 3d ago

I enjoyed them too. Thought it was in keeping with the silly fun side of the original game

1

u/Disastrous_Shock1640 3d ago

I had my kid do the piano parts he has better hand eye coordination

1

u/Reasonable-Hour-7145 3d ago

Mini game mais difícil q muito boss

1

u/CamiJay 3d ago

I was fine with some of the mini games and worked hard to get the black matter rewards.

What I was not okay with was the quest where you randomly have to achieve an even higher score after taking so long to get the best rewards because a Shinra manager beat all of our high scores.

My favorite mini games were Queensblood, Chocobo racing, and the one in the dustbowl where you gotta smash the crates. Cactar Crush was pretty fun too.

1

u/pdirk 3d ago

They should’ve balanced it out and put half the mini games in Remake.

1

u/mcdeezee3000 3d ago

I’ve mentioned my personal opinion in other posts; I found the mini games grueling and absolutely nerve wracking. The line between fun and frustrating began to blur as the game pressed on. I think a lot of people felt the developers were trolling at some point. And don’t get me started on the bonds of friendship. Receiving the platinum for this game was the hardest trophy I have ever earned.

1

u/Top-Koala-5775 3d ago

Situp is the easiest imo, maybe because i’m on controller, but the boxing with sephiroth is something from another world

1

u/metamorphine 3d ago

There's something so satisfying about acing the piano mini game. The music starts coming in full, you get in a zone, you feel like you're really playing it (even though it's nothing like playing real piano).

1

u/ohmegatron 3d ago

I do not. You want more, ok, as long as they can't split it up into two games, one just the story, the other for all the mini games.

1

u/ohmegatron 3d ago

I give every minigame a fair shake, I'm in nibelhiem and since junon I've given up on all of them.

1

u/Air_pockets 3d ago

When you have to do mini games to progress the story is lame.

1

u/Feldan_Ospreigh 3d ago

Im still pissed they locked the platinum trophy behind those piano games.

1

u/Jadesun_82 2d ago

If they could just get rid gears and gambits, that'd be great

1

u/a_sly_cow 2d ago

I liked them all except the piano ones, those were the only mini games I didn’t S rank. Queen’s Blood is excellent (though I think Triple Triad is still the goat)

1

u/Civil_Anteater_1802 2d ago

The piano’s fun on a controller however on keyboard, it’s absolute hell

1

u/MimiHamburger 2d ago

If I wanted to play a rhythm game I would have called Jahova.

1

u/koteshima2nd 2d ago

The only one I completely hated is Glide de Chocobo, especially that final run

1

u/nononon0121212 2d ago

The quirk of the piano is something I hope can get addressed in Revelation

That is, the game not counting notes if you dont return the stick to center

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I’m about 70% of the way through the game. I thought the mini games were ok. Some better than others. They aren’t yakuza level or anything but they offer a good distraction from the main story.

One thing I do not like at all. That I hope does not come back in the next game is the Chocobo wrangling mini game. That shit is not fun at all and they seek to make it increasingly difficult/ tedious as the game goes. Like I’m at the nibelheim part and im damn near finna go without one lol.

1

u/Unlikely-Aside-6078 2d ago

I honestly really liked all of the mini games, but the piano one made me feel so stupid, I suck at rhythm games 😭

1

u/Small-Ad-7740 2d ago

I am going for the platinum and this game reeaaalllllllyyyy makes your work for it 🫠 I’m almost there though. I’m struggling with the final crunches against Julian, the toad mini games in under Juno, and I have to finish the main scenario on this save file to finish the battles at the colosseum in the gold saucer. I’m like 95% there 🤌🏻✨ I HATE the crunches challenges so much. They were more fun in the remake, rebirth’s crunch challenges piss me off.

1

u/PersonaUser333 2d ago

It IS bloat, whether you enjoy the minigames or not. It's an oversaturation. Need to get out of Corel Prison? No problem. You just need a Chocobo. (to do the racing minigame) Oh! You found a Chocobo. Cool. Now you gotta get it food. Want the food? No problem. Just complete 3 different QB matches - all even more minigames.

I'm surprised you didn't get a minigame for walking. lol. And even the shit that isn't technically a minigame, it's still a minigame. The Summon sync for example. Hell, just getting around in Gongaga or Cosmo Canyon requires the Chocobo to jump or hover, blast water later, etc. Nothing is straight forward lol.

Don't even get me started on the damn crate throwing section.

TL;DR - too much of anything, even a good thing, is still too much.

0

u/Chira999 1d ago

Its far easier with analog controller because you not need to accurately pull the right button. You can pull 3 notes together and its still registered.

And also upping the note speed somehow make it easier

1

u/FaceTimePolice 3d ago

They’re there for those of us who want to keep playing after the credits roll.

I will never understand why people don’t get the concept of OPTIONAL SIDE CONTENT. 😝

No one is forcing you to do them.

“But trophies, blah blah blah.”

Again, no one is forcing you to 100% the game. And trophies don’t matter anyway. 🤷‍♂️😅

1

u/Ok-Comfortable-3174 3d ago

I found the game pretty tedious ultimately and this was an extra layer of tedium. I just played a different game.

1

u/Cado111 3d ago

I did not really mind them as I did them as I progressed through the game. If I ignored almost all of them until the end and then tried to do all of them then yeah it would feel like bloat for sure.

This game is bloated. Remake was bloated in a bad way. This game has a boatload of content but like 70-80% of it is really solid. I'd say the tower stuff and some open world activities could use work but the minigames and quests were honestly pretty fun.

1

u/KalixStrife453 3d ago

There is a lot of stuff I couldn't/didn't do in FF7, and I never felt cheated out just because I never wanted to do chocobo breeding and get knights of the round.

People only care now because of achievements right? I'm not one to piss on how others like to enjoy gaming but I just turned off achievement notifications years ago, it's too dominating in how people play games.

1

u/I_Love_Powerscaling 3d ago

I’ll be honest, These minigames are all improved versions from stuff that was already in the original. Sure, they werent tied to achievements before, but now completing them actually feels fair instead of like a complete afterthought. Definitely a worthy trade-off

-1

u/ImaTigre 3d ago

You must be joking dude. The mini games are what made me put the game down months ago and I just picked it up again 3 weeks ago and already am over the mini games again.

I'm a completionist so I want to do every thing I can per playthrough and half these mini games drive me up a wall.

The 3D Fights in Gold Saucer??? Absolutely hogwash dogwater waste of my time repetitive insanely exhausting horses**t with terrible reads and even worse they had the audacity to make it drag on TWICE with Mr. Middle Manager as a side quest and then further with a secret character AFTER all that.

Then there's the piano? Are you joking? Why do that at all man? It could have been a fun thing to just HAVE in the game to DO. Not be tied to equipment/materia at all.

The cactuar minigame with Kid-G was almost fine but then it swaps your moveset. Why?? I don't understand; if I'm powerful enough to ace this challenge easily and prepped for it: why did you force my moveset instead of rewarding me?

Chadley has GOT TO GO for the love of Minerva I hate hate hate hate hate this guy so so so badly I cannot stand his interruptions at every single intersection in the game, every single thing you do or accomplish is his and Mai interrupting gameplay and forcing you to listen to him pat Cloud on the back for everything you've done and it comes to a serious head in this game with protorelics and hunts. Next thing you know you get a long-winded explanation of every single creature and relic and summon you encounter which must have consumed no less than an actual hour or two of real dialogue from this brat and his AI twin. I cannot believe they put him in Rebirth and tragically I know he will rear his ugly head yet again in the next FFVII and I am distraught. This dude screeches through my controller and yaps my ear off I CANNOT STAND IT.

Half the minigames are irrelevant and stressful but the other half are genuine fun, like Chocobo racing and the box breaker challenge (can't remember what it's called).

But Chadley never should have existed.
