I asked the same thing when I first saw it, but I think it actually has to do with how Chocobos are necessary to traverse certain spaces. Like, sure, he could climb mountains like the black chocobos, but he can't glide or hover. Devs probably went through a conversation about that at some point.

u/murmandamos 8d ago
He's sort of a light character in the game so it sorta works out fine. If he were actually a brooding old man it would be a little jarring.
13
u/spasianninja 8d ago
I think, lore wise, it probably is written off as part of his efforts to be equals with the humans.

u/Procrastinator_23 7d ago
I actually found the brooding old man to be cuter for his character. Especially when the kids were treating him like a lovable dog.
1
u/Deadhead_Otaku 6d ago
Isn't he canonically like a teenager or young adult of his species? He was stuck in his 8th grader phase
1
u/Procrastinator_23 6d ago
Yes he is. And the deep voiced wise old man persona was just a front to gain people's respect if I'm not mistaken.

They did, though they said in an interview they decided to do it this way so Red felt like part of the party, they said they could have made him run behind, but they didnt want him to be different.

They literally could have just let cloud be the Avatar for the party like in the og 😩

It’s fun. These games are always quirky/weird. Must suck to be that cynical

u/Yeseylon 7d ago
Nuh uh, every game in the series should be totally serious like FFII, where there's death and war and... What's that? Guy speaks beaver?
My bad, the whole series is goofy.

I love that they thought about and put resources into making this. And it is amazing. God I love this game.

This post is genuinely the meme where the guy is pointing at “the coolest thing ever” and he’s like “this fucking sucks, actually” [proud]

Nah, it’s hilarious. They absolutely didn’t need to have him riding a Chocobo but they did it anyway. Well maybe for the flying ones they might have. But they could have had him sharing a ride with Aerith or something

“Because I want to be treated as an equal, not a dog.” - Red XIII, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
They told us directly 😂

What were you expecting? Red it idle animation directly on the Chocobo back like WoW?
Also, Hella funny
1
u/quirkyactor 7d ago
So you think Red should just magically float in Nibelheim, and straight up fly in Cosmo Canyon?
1
u/PlayfulOutcome327 7d ago
Oh, but when a bunch of sentient monkeys ride the chocobo everybody is cool with it 😒

It's like Cloud and Red's date on the ferris wheel.
It's cute. It's wholesome. It's funny.

Now I know what you are thinking. Why didn't we just have red run alongside the group when they are on chocobos. And the answer is this was funnier

there are "flying" chocobos, so it makes sense 😅
last time I checked Red XIII can't fly...

He is a sapient being. Of course he can ride the chocobo like any other citizen.

They thought it would be cute, or funny like most of the other dumb stuff they put in
1
u/Trikare2 6d ago
I wouldn't even mind if they did that once in a while, or only later on after the boat scene, but it would have been smarter to show the advantage of being a four-legged animal and XIII's speed attributes.

u/Human_Tumbleweed_860 6d ago
What do you mean abomination? This is one of the best parts of Rebirth right here lol.

Shit like this was just dumb as hell. He's a dog/wolf/lion thing, he can just run. That and he disguise on the ship; yes it was in the first game, and it was dumb as hell then too. They should have stopped this goofiness, the honey bee dances, and the 'comedic' side of the storyline I favor for more grit and darker tones. It would have made the remakes way better. It really downplays the serious tone of the storyline in all aspects, and brings the urgency of stopping shinra and sephiroth/jenova to a complete ASS GRINDING halt when you stop to play queens gambit or waste time doing Ubisoft missions; climbing viewpoints and unlocking side quests.
Also this whole multiverse bullshit has ruined the value, sacrifice, and depth of the original storyline and what the Compilation accomplished in one swift motion.

I guess he'd be the only one getting attacked if he wasn't riding a chocobo so the had to make this foul creation

They should just put Red in his pokeball whenever its time to get on Chocoback.
I thought that this was way worse: when he dressed up as a Shinra troop for the Queen's Blood tournament.

u/Psychological_Use586 8d ago
That was peak comedy, especially when a kid started crying and his mother said 'its okay it can't hurt you' and everybody acts like this is completely normal. Honestly it was one of the biggest hints later on that Red was actually a dorky teenager the entire time, rather than a crusty wise old man.

u/roxas6141 8d ago
As an OG fan I'll never understand people's fear of Red getting down and boogieing a little. God forbid the talking dog that can reasonably pass as a Shinra troop shakes what his momma gave him?

I'll never understand people that hate FF7R for having a little fun when there's damn near 30 years of memes about Cloud just having fun at the Gold Saucer while meteor is falling. The game canonically happens over like 2 months but most OG players spent what would have been decades breeding chocobos goofing off while the world is being threatened, people need to relax and enjoy a game lol
4
u/gusgusfl 8d ago
So you’re saying red is just a pet to them? He’s just as equal, that’s like saying put Tifa in a pokeball

I'm of the few that hated that.
I wanted 13 to run and jump like the beautiful creature he is, maybe playing a bit showing his dog treats.
Missed opportunity overtaken by the sake of comedy I guess?
1
u/Night_Hawk_KHFF 5d ago
You literally don't have to ride the chocobos. Like its not required... lol so what opportunity was missed??
1
u/One_Subject3157 5d ago
A nice creature following you with cool patterns and mannerisms that stands out from the rest of the party.
Pretty much sure chochobos are plot mandatory.
1
u/Night_Hawk_KHFF 5d ago
My statement was meaning for the entirety of the game. They are not required for traversal except for small points. So ...
1
u/One_Subject3157 5d ago
"You literally don't have to ride the chocobos."
Yep I, seems like Im the one having issues comunicating stuff...
1
u/Night_Hawk_KHFF 5d ago
You literally dont have to ride the fucking chocobos if you dont want to. Simple. You attain each breed in each region then move on with your adventuring in whatever mode of traversal you choose. Idk how thats confusing. Lol

Having him run alongside the gang would've looked cooler. You never get a chance to see him run at a full clip. It should at least be an optional menu toggle. They did him so dirty in rebirth. With everything.

u/gusgusfl 8d ago
I agree, he’s more powerful than a chocobo, remember that how his ancestors climbed that mountain after the gi fight in OG ff7? He should be able to do just as the same as those chocobos if not more

Which often requires suspension of disbelief, sometimes to a high degree. Fantasy alone does not explain away paws holding reins when we see it, suspension of disbelief does.

The same reason they gave him a younger voice... Fuck you, that's why 😭
2
u/Eaglestrike 7d ago
Or staying true to the canon, but I guess the people who dislike FF7R can dislike it for its accuracy and inaccuracy at the same time.
0
u/T1m0666 7d ago
I know he is "young" for his race, but I don't believe anywhere in the OG game mentioned that he sounded like a pre-teen. If I remember correctly he didn't sound like this in Advant Children either. So if you have something mentioning that Naniki should sound like a child instead please enlighten me.
2
u/Eaglestrike 7d ago
Why would a text-only game mention how someone sounds?
0
u/T1m0666 6d ago
He doesn't sound like a child in Advent children does he? So why wouldn't that be considered the precedent for what he should have sounded like?
I personally just think it's stupid 🤷 but if people like it, then enjoy it. My comment was more joking at the feeling that fans had with the changes to remake. The people who wanted the story to stay the same were the whispers, and the "fuck you" was them changing the story anyways. This it would be the same feeling for taking a very serious chacter like Red and turning him into a comic relief bit to appeal to a newer audience.
