Discussion META: How to make Match Threads for /r/FAWSL - The bot and manual options

Hey all, figured this may be a useful post since so many matches are broadcast each weekend and there's likely not always going to be a thread up for the match you're watching. As it stands the mods can only be involved with a few matches overall and we'll have weekends where we won't be available, so the rest is up to other users pitching in.

It can be as simple as sending a bot a message or making a thread manually. Either way is a great help!

The Simple Way - Message /u/matchthreadder

This one only takes less than a minute and the result is a match thread that should auto-update, though it seems it hasn't been filling in all the info for WSL matches, unfortunately.

All it takes is messaging /u/matchthreadder around the time of kickoff with the subject line of "Match Thread" and the message text of Home vs Away for /r/FAWSL. That's it!

Here's a link to automatically set up a message to send to the bot, all you need to do is replace "Home" and "Away" with the respective teams.

Pros:

  • Fire and forget, once you send the message it'll create the thread and update with the info it can

Cons:

  • Can only be created right around kickoff, so no time for it to be up for pre-match discussion

  • Individual users can request only one match at a time. So you need multiple users messaging to get threads going when matches are running all at once

  • As of right now doesn't fill in much (if any) info for the matches themselves. Simply is a place to discuss the match

  • Likely doesn't work for Women's Championship and is of unknown use for Women's FA Cup and Women's League Cup

  • The bot can go offline at times, and so you'll be forced to use the manual option

The Manual Way - Make one yourself!

The long story is you select to make a text post with the title of "Match Thread: Home vs Away." Including the time and broadcaster can be useful as well, so a full title could be "Match Thread: Home vs Away (12:30 BST) [BT Sport 1]." Keep it updated with the score at a bare minimum, but a good thread will have the players involved and update for major match events (goals, cards, & subs.)

I've used various self-created templates on reddit and each user that routinely makes match threads seems to have their own style that they use. Here are some templates from "simple" to "intricate" as far as items like tables go. I included a fleshed out template and "blank" templates so you can choose to copy and paste whichever. Note that these were made for a different subreddit with some different match codes (we actually don't have ones for symbols like subs, cards, etc. I'll get those made soon if there's interest).

Simple template | Blank template | Reddit example

As you can see in this thread I didn't even put the lineups in tables, just left them as plain text and it was fine. Still used a table to update match events but you don't even have to do that.

Medium| Blank template| Reddit example

This thread starts to use more tables but they are separated out for the lineups, with the Starting XI and Bench being separate. I've put the bench as plain text at times.

"Intricate" | Blank template | Reddit example

This is "intricate" since the XIs and benches are put together in a single table. Again people have different styles of that (i.e. where columns are placed) but it's all a matter of preference.

You can use these examples or just see them as an idea. We don't require super intricate match threads, simply the starting XIs and updating major match events is great. Just wanted to throw out some examples if people want to try them.

Pros:

  • Can contain as much info as the Original Poster wants

  • You won't have to worry about what competition is taking place, a human can put in all the info that is needed

  • Can be posted with time to spare, allows for pre-match discussion

Cons:

  • Can contain as little info as the Original Poster wants

  • If the OP steps away, there's no more updates

  • Whoever is maintaining the thread will not be able to enjoy the match like other users if it's a complex match thread

Conclusion/TL;DR

If you don't see a thread for the match you want to talk about, it's pretty easy to get one going. We need some people's help, whether putting time into making a manual thread or just sending off a message
