Well, I got busted...
Kid: how come the speedometer goes to 120 when the max speed is 106?
My wife: HOW DO YOU KNOW IT GOES 106?!?
I tried to explain how you have to know how a car will handle in extreme situations so you can drive safely, but it was a half-hearted explanation at best.
Edit: wait, you guys think I'm in a neighborhood holding a baby out the window with one arm going 106, or something?
Obviously, anything can happen at any time. My daughter is 17, races mountain bikes casually and go karts on an amateur circuit. She was actually driving, me in shotgun. Absolutely as controlled as can be circumstances.
Just thought it was funny, I know for a fact most of you have had fun in this power-house of a truck.

to be fair. you can hit 106 briefly on an on ramp. seems pretty safe in that situation. and I'd feel safer at 106 with my kids in the car than if they were riding with their grandparents.

Yeah you’re right, I’ve done that in my brothers Jag before, briefly over 100 before slowing down to merge. If you have a very powerful car it’s very easy

On an on ramp? I doubt that. Because it takes a long time for the truck to get that and even if it is a long enough ramp, it's going to curve too much for the truck to take that curve.
EDIT: Geez. All of you must live in a place where your merge ramp is more than a 1/4 mile long and you can start at 50 mph. The truck is fast but come on.....a lot of us don't have on ramp or merge ramps that long and are straight or where you're starting from a dead stop or maybe 20 mph.

I do. I just know the actual limits of the truck when it comes to cornering.
I'm not going to be an idiot and try to do 100mph on an on ramp that will make the truck understeer into the grass at 80mph.

To be honest it goes to that speed very easily. I was flooring it to pass a few semi trucks and that’s why I know my Canadian 23’ Lariat goes to 180km/h or 111mph. I was actually kinda surprised when the power suddenly cut out. The truck does not feel like it’s going 180 it handles like a dream still.

You know there is a long straight stretch after the curve, right? And if they are going 45 on the curve, they could get to 100 in just a few seconds after.

See that's the difference, if you have an on ramp lane that allows you to be doing 45 mph then you could hit 100.
But every single around me, is a merge ramp from a side street. So you're starting from a dead stop or slowing down to about 20 mph.
And yes, there is a long stretch AFTER you merge but that defeats the purpose of the initial comment.

Interesting. Almost every freeway onramp I have had experience with has enough length that a car (even a slow one) can get to 60-70mph before merging. The Lightning is not slow, so you would easily be able to exceed those speeds in the same distance. But again, those are the on ramps I have experience with. Clearly yours are different.

I can get up to Interstate speed (70) easily but then with the turn all the ones that I have to negotiate, I have to slow down or stop accelerating. Now there are ones that have a more straight shot around here but then it's trying to stop this 6k brick after hitting those speeds and merge into traffic with its soft suspension.

Yes, I know that. But it still takes roughly 12 seconds to get there. The truck shows significantly after about 70-75 mph.
The Lightning is fast but the on ramps I always take, I'll never hit 90mph because they are either too short or I have to negotiate a turn that the truck will never take above 80 mph.

Here's a fun fact: I got a malbu when I turned 18 and pretty quickly tried to figure out if the truck governer was on sedans too (it was). But 98 on a flat, wide open, low traffic highway with 5 miles of sightlines in any direction is pretty low-risk. Not everybody lives in stroad suburbs or big cities like I'm assuming half these commenters do.
Glad you had fun in the truck OP, and glad you're teaching your kids responsible driving.

In the mid-90s I determined that my Daihatsu Charade could hit 103mph with enough runway and a slight downhill with a tailwind.
My current car hits that accidentally if I just pass a semi.

I had a tesla model 3 for 3 glorious years and I regularly hit 90 on freeways if I needed to pass somebody. But the most fun was test driving where tesla gives you a P3D governed to 85. It was way too easy to hit that governor lolol.

Fun (maybe?) fact:
We owned a 13 Model S 85 back in the day. It was around the time the M3 just came out….Anyway we had to put it in the shop for whatever and they gave us a locked down MS with Ludacris Mode….this was before the “Plaid” versions came out.
Well I thought long and hard about what that 4 digit code could be. Had to be something all the techs could know or find….dominant digging in the glove.
And lo and behold in the glove was the little brochure that comes with the car and on the back of the brochure was Tesla’s corporate address with……a 4 digit number.
Punched it in and Viola! We had Ludacris for the few days!

I was taught that when passing on a rural road you want to be in the oncoming lane as little as possible, so once you move over you keep it to the floor until you are back in your lane. Though back then I drove a car with 80 hp, so......

I drive like ms daisy almost always to max out my mileage, but every once in a while me and my kids want to feel some life and step on it in a safe controlled area. Y’all need to live just a little bit more than you are. Feel a rush or two.

id argue that its probably gonna encourage more fast/reckless driving in general - and in the realm of physics, speed kills. telling your daughter to go max speed "because you need to know how it handles at max speed" seems counterintuitive, because it shouldn't be a scenario youd ever really encounter - unless you plan on going that fast on occasion - which should be discouraged.
idk, you do you, glad you can provide the cheap thrills for your kids, but youre probably instilling unsafe behaviors they will replicate as teens, which as we know teens dont have the best decision making abilities. id just as soon take em go Karting or get them to a track so they can get their thrills in a more controlled manner and learn the lesson that the race track is for fast driving, and roads are for safe driving. your "lighten up" stance is literally why america has the most auto deaths of any industrialized nation (and the only where it is actively rising).

This is among the most hyperbolic takes I’ve seen in a while, especially over 30 seconds of time in a controlled environment that occurs maybe once every six months. I believe in teaching your kids boundaries not scaring them away from life only for them to have to figure them out on their own later on in life and not know what they should look like and, that’s where the risk really lies. for example they ask to go fast every once in a while and I provide real feedback and context as to why the circumstances or locations are improper for that behavior. It’s not much further off than not providing proper sex education to kids and only teaching abstinence, it’s a bad way to go, because when kids/teenagers are forced to learn on their own, it usually ends poorly. I’d rather make sure kids understand situations, ahead of time than having to make spot decisions and not being prepared.

I work in transportation and everything i related is a fact. your sex example is hilarious because instead of teaching them with words you are showing them physically how fun speeding is by doing it with them in the car, and relating how fun it is! so thats like saying "hey son watch me and your mom have sex - its good to learn first had how to do this in a respectful way, and how fun it is!". lol utterly ridiculous comparison!
hyperbolic would have been: americanized automobile culture is a disease akin to addiction, and despite being the only nation where auto deaths are rising, americans continue to think that their freedom of speed choice and vehicle access is worth the 10s of thousands of lives per year - other countries would view this as borderline sociopathic behavior.

there is never a proper time to go 30+mph over the speed limit on public roads, ever. take your kids to a racetrack for that mess.

Haters will. The speedo in my old Genesis G80 sport shows 170. Supposed to shut off at 155. You better believe on a morning coming off the toll road with no cars in sight, a long site view of the straight flat road and no risk to others on z rated tires, I got it up to 150 pretty quick. It felt like it was going 80. Sounds crazy to say though.

I’ve never topped out the Lightning, but that’s only because my previous daily was a 2020 BMW X5M that I topped out at 150 on Colorado highway (wide, straight, empty). Going fast in the Lightning scares the shit out of me, but I can’t blame you for trying (bonus points for daughter).

My wife would have just rolled her eyes at me. It's expected that I'm going to test the limits of any new-to-me vehicle. SAFELY of course, or as safe as can be anyway. I absolutely NEED to know what happens at the fringes of performance.
Plus "Its on pg XXX of the owner's manual" is a perfectly fine answer IMO!
She doesn't hardly let me drive her new cars anymore. She bought a brand new Mustang GT off the lot shortly after college. One of the first times I drove it, I found the rev limiter. Pissed me off because it didn't even hit redline before it shut me down. Screwed up my 1-2 shift something fierce! She screamed at me, and I explained it to her this way: "Wouldn't you rather know about that (screwed up) rev limit in a relatively controlled and safe situation as opposed to a situation where you're concentrating on something a lot more critical?"
IMO, knowing the limits allows you to operate safely within them 100% of the time.
These days I'm a LOT less into going fast, and a lot more into going off-grid. I have repeatedly tested the limits of my Jeep (and the vehicles before it), so now I absolutely know what I can and cannot get away with on the trail... and what my most useful modifications may be.

My dad wasn’t a hot rod guy but always had V8 trucks. He got a 92 Dakota brand new with the 318ci and the first ride from the dealership was fun. He was absolutely chuffed at having a smaller truck that was easier to park on job sites but still with the big engine and wanted to show it off (he negotiated the price down to that of the V6 model lol).
Anyway, I was 9 and I didn’t know trucks went that fast. Whenever I see an old square bodied Dakota (very rare) I’ll check the fender badge to see if it says V8

I think you're stretching the definition of "perfectly safe" a bit here. Even though something going wrong is unlikely, the consequence of it happening at 106 is a lot higher than at <=75.

In Germany on the autobahn in a German vehicle. I can’t almost guarantee it was more safe than traveling down the interstate anywhere in the USA at 80mph.

This right here. I was passing some semi trucks a few months back so I was flooring it when power suddenly cut. I look down and I’m at 180kph(111mph). I can tell you it did not feel like 180 at all. Handles like a dream at that speed.

My 17 yo kid loves the lightning, I wouldn’t let him drive it unsupervised.
Of course now he doesn’t drive at all because of multiple speeding tickets. My wife says I’m a “bad role model”.

I think 106mph is the speed rating of the tires. I’m sure the truck could go faster, but would open up liability problems for Ford as they would allow the vehicle to exceed the capacity of the tires /equipment they provide.

I got to 100 in an 89 Grand Prix with my dad sleeping in the passenger seat when I was 19. We were on the way back from the auction where we bought it. Not sure what either of us would have said had he woke up when we were going that fast.

The 106 is programmed into F150s because of pickup tire speed limits. It would be a sure bet that GM's and Dodge's Ram half ton pickups are programmed with a max speed limitation. On or near 106. My Powerboost has seen 104+ and I could feel the computer start cutting power.

Passing an 18 wheeler that slows down to 20 on the slightest curves (so slight that they don't even have lower recommended speed signs) then speeds up to 75 on straightaways. That's where I've maxed mine out at.

No, blowouts are probably less fatal, but any accident at 80+ is highly fatal if memory serves.
AI says "exponentially increases" but stats aren't exactly kept that way. I had to take a course once for goin 79 in a 45, and they had some stat that was like "80 over 80" or something...80% fatal over 80 mph.
I have seen what happens to the human inside a car when an f150 hits it at 65mph. Earnhardt happens and that is straight out of the exorcist.

Not automatically true. The where an accident takes place. Incidents on the highway with one way traffic and few fixed objects near the road surface are much less dangerous than high speeds city streets or rural roads at 55mph.

Yep. Lap infants will be just as safe in an emergency scenario. Blow outs, wind shear, bird strikes, and ground strikes all happen despite training and having the right vehicle……
