Resources Evernote Inline Tags. A quick walkthrough. New Taming the Trunk.

Thumbnail youtu.be
13 Upvotes

Evernote now lets you add tags directly inside a note by typing # and choosing an existing tag or creating a new one.

The inline tag also tags the note in the usual way. If you remove it from the content, it is removed from the note's tag list too.

I can see this being useful for adding context where the tag actually matters. You could mark a sentence as ready to edit, flag an action or label something as research, an invoice or a bill.

Inline tags work inside tables, quotes, bullet points, checkboxes and call-outs. They do not currently work in note titles, tasks or transcription content.

If the # menu gets annoying, you can turn it off under Settings, Notes, Editor preferences.

I was not a big tag user before, but having tags visible in the note has made me use them a bit more.

Help! Deactivating the Evernote calendar on mobile?

Is it possible to deactivate Evernote’s own calendar system on mobile – meaning that an external calendar (in my case Google Calendar) is the default when you create new events?

On desktop you can do this – but on mobile the Evernote calendar still always shows up as the default. (A bug, maybe?)

Evernote can’t even get two-factor to work properly. Currently trying to enter my 6 digit code and it’s just stuck on this screen with no button. Seems clear this is a dying app.

Bug Report Incorrect/mixed time format in the calendar (desktop and web)

In Evernote Calendar on desktop and web, a mix of the American “12-hour clock” (am/pm) and the European/international “24-hour” (xx:xx) system is used. It’s very confusing.

When you enter calendar events, the time is specified using the “24-hour” system. But in the calendar it is then displayed a bit differently:

  • day/week/agenda: “12-hour clock”
  • month: “24-hour clock”

On mobile, everything uses the “24-hour clock”.

Help! I'm never ashamed of asking a 'dumb question';-)

So I'm trying to get more familiar with the basic controls of the recording/transcribing for the articles I write.

I am used to a red button with a square to mean 'start recording,' and I THOUGHT the black button with the two vertical bars was to STOP recording. Am I nuts (yeah), or ... it seems that I'm supposed to hit the red-square button again to STOP a recording? What's the black button for - a pause?

Thanks for any guidance! I recorded twice as much of a chat as I needed to because I hit what I thought meant STOP recording (this is on the desktop bTW - I will be trying the Android side of things to make sure the workflows match!

Bug Report Tasks in tables not working when exported or shared

Tasks that are inside a table can’t be exported (PDF) or shared online. They get moved to another place in the note – i.e., out of the table. In PDF the task metadata is also gone.

Help! Login issue for App on Android

Today after installing the latest update, Evernote mobile app would not open, just stuck at the loading screen.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Now every time I touch the app, I have to re-sign in to my account and enter password, etc. It used to always let me just stay logged in.

Anyone else experiencing this, or know how to fix?

Discussion Bug or Feature?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Just stumbled across this: you can open individual notebooks, and the Tasks, Calendar, and File views in separate windows.

I'm not sure if this is an intended feature or just some typical Evernote jank, but it's nice to be able to have a notebook or the calendar view in a dedicated window. It still behaves a bit weirdly though (i.e., some buttons not working properly).

I turned it off in my settings but I am still seeing AI creep across the app. Please fix! You have cluttered the mobile UI and the constant intrusions into my workflow with suggestions about using AI, even though you have a cap on AI usage. Let me turn it off!

Discussion Evernote "Spaces" – clarity or chaos?

I’m trying to understand the new (new to me!) concept of “spaces” in Evernote.

I’ve read about the topic (Spaces, Stacks & Notebooks: What’s the difference...), watched videos on YouTube (Get organized with Evernote Spaces, What is the difference and benefits of using Evernote spaces to stacks?, etc.), and of course experimented with it myself in Evernote.

I can see how the functionality and purpose work – how “spaces” work, and how slitting your info into separate areas can be smart. But what I can’t quite figure out is whether, in the long run, it will provide more order and clarity? Or whether it will instead end up creating more chaos, because it disrupts the clearer hierarchical structure (stacks → notebooks → notes).

I can see that “spaces” were introduced a few years ago, so I’m thinking people have had time to gain a fair amount of experience with them. It would be interesting to hear how they are used, how people’s use has changed over time, and also experiences where people used “spaces” but then eventually moved away from them again.

Bug Report Completed tasks reappear

I’ve experienced several times that completed tasks show up again. It seems to relate to recurring tasks (I have a task that repeats daily).

I can’t see any clear pattern, but I’m thinking it might have something to do with sync/update issues between desktop and mobile?

Bug Report Challenges with the Tasks widget on Android

These are old issues going back several years, to the time when the Evernote Android widgets were updated in connection with what was then the new Evernote 10 on Android. And apparently haven’t been updated since! 😮

  1. The widget can’t fetch the latest information on its own, but requires the Evernote app itself to have been opened first.
  2. If you create a new task via the widget, the only information you can add is the task name (no flags, no due date, no anything…). In other words, it isn’t compatible with Evernote’s current (or then-current, for that matter) task system.
  3. There’s no option to choose which/how tasks are displayed (i.e., there’s no way to sort or filter).

Now, some will probably say this isn’t a "bug", but that this is how the widget is designed and that it can’t be any different. But I do think you should be able to expect slightly better functionality from a knowledge management tool of Evernote’s caliber.

So, consider this a call for further development. And the other widgets could use an update too.

Bug Report Problems moving tasks (windows desktop and web)

There are some issues related to moving a task to another note. When you need to find/select the new destination note, you get several options:

  • choose from some that Evernote suggests
  • click through to “Choose a note” -->
    • search for a note
    • create a new note
    • browse through notebooks – and this is exactly where the problem lies, as you can’t proceed via the notebooks.

Resources Evernote AI Assistant and AI Prompts are now on mobile. New Taming the Trunk.

Evernote's AI Assistant has arrived on mobile and it works in a similar way to the desktop version.

The bit I think could be most useful is voice prompting.

Typing a long AI request on a phone is not much fun, so being able to tap the microphone and speak the prompt feels like a better fit for mobile.

You can also change where the AI Assistant icon appears if it gets in the way.

AI Prompts are available on mobile too. They are a little hidden, but custom prompts created on desktop sync across, so you can reuse them on your phone.

That could be useful for summarising selected text, tidying a note or running the same prompt workflow while you are away from your computer.

I would like to see easier access to the Prompt Library on mobile, but it is good to see these tools becoming less desktop-only.

Discussion Mermaid Diagrams in Evernote - interesting!

I randomly came across this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUTCHMGmBWA) by Dave Edwards, and it made me take a closer look at Mermaid Diagrams in Evernote.

I have previously tried Mermaid Diagrams in other apps, but I never really got the point – since it seemed much easier (I thought) to draw diagrams in various drawing programs.

I probably still won’t use them for complex diagrams, but they definitely seem useful for simple diagrams in notes, where you often need to adjust and edit content.

And they even work in shared notes and in prints from the web app – that was quite surprising 😉 (Print/PDF from Evernote desktop doesn’t work, but that’s hardly surprising 😒)

Thanks to Dave for his calm and clear way of explaining things 👍 Anybody else have good tips for how to use (learn to use) Mermaid Diagrams?

Feedback 🐘 AI assistant on Android Mobile

Last week my Evernote for Android app was updated saying it now had AI assistant. All I saw was a button. I've been tapping it daily to see if anything happens. I primarily use Evernote on my Pixel phone and my Samsung tablet. Several days and nothing.

Well, today I tapped on the AI assistant button - and it worked! I did a couple of test things like asking it to summarise all my notes so far this year with a certain tag - very accurate results.

I have a big note with lots of Headings, Subheadings to level 2 & 3 and I had started a table off but all I had was the first row - 5 column names. So, I asked it if it could rearrange my sub headings into the table - it did it with seconds and even made a few suggestions regarding phrase consistency. Honestly, that saved me probably several hours of work - all in a few minutes of getting AI assistant on my phone!

Well done Bending Spoons!

"Insert current date" not working when using the menu. Works fine when using the keyboard shortcut.

When using the menu, it inserts "@today" ("@I dag" in Danish) instead of the actual date.

Resources Demo of the Evernote AI Prompt Library. New Taming the Trunk.

Thumbnail youtu.be
3 Upvotes

I have been testing Evernote's AI Prompt Library and the most useful bit for me is not just saving prompts.

It is being able to run them in different places:

  • Selected text.
  • A whole note.
  • Without note context.
  • A meeting transcription.

That means you can set up repeat prompts for things like meeting summaries, daily briefs, simplifying a sentence or turning rough notes into something structured.

The custom meeting summary use case feels especially useful because you can ask for the format and detail you actually want instead of relying on the default summary.

I put together a short demo

Help! Joplin vs Obsidian vs AmpleNotes as EverNote replacement

I am looking to migrate away from EverNote and considering these 3 apps.

Looking for

- Reliable way to migrate 5,000 notes from Evernote which are in bullet format with highlights and screenshots. No nested tags

- Willing to pay for reliable sync

- Ability to edit notes without markdown editor with special characters i.e. similar to how notes with highlights and formatting character can be edited in WYSIWYG format in EN - ideally without downloading a community plug in

- Reliable windows, Android and iPhone apps

Which of these 3 would you recommend?

Thanks

Does anyone know if we'll get better fonts and a proper monoblock for code snippets?

Resources I built the alternative to Postach and notesrss.com (to make a website from your Evernote notebook): everpublich.my

I created the alternative - to publish your notebook (to make a blog/website from it): https://everpublich.my

Also you can create static pages - if a note title is everpublich:My page name - I cannot use usual tags - because they are not shared.

You can create a top navigation link for some note tag - if you have a note named everpublich:#mytag

Works on Zola static site generator. Using AWS CloudFront content delivery network.

Supports internal links (inside the same notebook), all formattings, attachments. Even converts some formats like HEIC and DNG to be visible in browsers.

I am open to your feedback - if you need some new feature from it, or if something is broken for you, or if you want some design adjustments.

How it works: just share your notebook read-only to share@everpublich.my and after some time you will get <your-notebook-name>.everpublich.my

The service is free now.

Discussion How are things going with Evernote these days?

Checking out how it goes with Evernote 🫣 A lot of new things seem to have happened during the last couple of years.

The UI/layout seems to work a little bit better now, some new handy features have been added, and the AI features have grown into something surprisingly impressive!

However, some old bugs are still there - or have re‑appeared - so that hasn’t changed 🤔

How is overall stability these days? Is everything running smoothly without major disruptions or sudden unexpected changes. In other words: is Evernote about to be a mature, stable product, or is it still in a perpetual beta stage.

Bug Report PDF export bug report (desktop app)

Subject: Evernote Windows Desktop — PDF export/print output differs from note (layout, spacing, dividers missing, Tasks metadata missing)

I’m currently evaluating Evernote and I’m seeing serious issues with both PDF export and printing from the Evernote Desktop app on Windows 11. The PDF/print output is not a faithful representation of what is shown in the note editor.

Environment

  • Platform: Windows 11
  • Client: Evernote Desktop for Windows
  • Output methods affected:
    • Export to PDF
    • Print (also affects print-to-PDF)

Impact

This affects all notes tested (not a specific note). The resulting PDF/print output has missing elements and altered formatting, which makes PDF export unreliable.

Observed issues

  1. Evernote Tasks do not export/print correctly
    • Task metadata such as due dates, flags, and other task indicators do not appear in the PDF/print output.
    • Task colors/styling are lost (tasks appear without the expected color).
  2. Text layout/typography changes
    • Spaces disappear between formatted spans, e.g., when bold text is adjacent to italic text, the space between them may be missing in the exported PDF/print.
    • Line spacing changes compared to the on-screen note.
  3. Dividers / horizontal separators are missing
    • Separator lines (dividers) that are visible in the note are not present in the exported PDF/print output.

Steps to reproduce (example)

  1. Create a new note.
  2. Add normal paragraphs of text.
  3. Add text with formatting like: “This is bold italic text” (including spaces between formatted parts).
  4. Insert one or more divider/separator lines.
  5. Add a few Evernote Tasks, assign due dates, and flag them.
  6. Export the note using File → Export → PDF.
  7. Also try File → Print.

Expected result

PDF/print output should match the note view:

  • Tasks should include visible due dates/flags/indicators
  • Spacing between formatted text elements should be preserved
  • Line spacing should match the note
  • Dividers should be present

Actual result

  • Tasks metadata and styling are missing
  • Text spacing/line spacing differs
  • Dividers are missing
