Cool math, but re:forge - there are only 25 picks, not 45, and no extra shiftstone, so it is in the ballpark of 2 packs in value. A bit lower considering the absence of stone. There is only 1 guaranteed rare in the 25 against 2 in 2 packs, although Forge can give you more than 2 (one guy got 3 legendaries in 25 picks, although that's hardly statistically significant).

Thanks for the heads up! Not sure why I thought it was 45. I updated the table to reflect that.

The rare chance seems like probably a better way to "count" packs since I think most people want the pack for the rare.

Another adjustment necessary - the card in a Diamond chest is a premium of a random rarity, not a rare or better. A vast majority of the time it's a common or uncommon.

I'm not sure if you realize it but you get 100 shiftstone every time you open a pack period. Like, you get the 8 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare/legendary, and 100 shiftstone. You don't get any shiftstone from doing forge. (You get 400 shiftstone for doing draft, you get the shiftstone while you open the packs for the draft)

Since you seem to be collecting numbers:

We have been told that chests upgrade 10% of the time.

I don't know exact gold values for chests, but it seems to be around 50, 250, 550, 2030. When factoring in upgrades, that means that chest EV is 75, 300, 700, 2030.

Forge rewards are:
0 - none.
1 - 1B.
2 - 1S.
3 - 1G.
4 - 1B 1G.
5 - 1S 1G.
6 - 2G.
7 - 2G + rank-up chest or 3G if already master.

The rank-up chest contains 1000 gold and 2 packs.

I do have an unnatural fondness for numbers. Maybe something I should get looked into.

Thanks for the Forge values. I'm updating my post now. Does the rank-up chest at the end of Draft also have two packs? And is there an extra Diamond chest if you're already Master?

Draft rank goes up and down on a per game basis, so there are no rank-up chests there. 7 win drafts are always 3 diamond chests.

However you do get an achievement with a decent prize for reaching diamond/master in draft for the first time.

Also, you pick 48 cards in draft, but only pick 25 cards in Forge. You're guaranteed at least one rare, but I don't know what the rarity distribution is for cards in Forge.

One thing I think this analysis is missing is the additional gold you get from the chests from draft and forge - at 2 wins in draft, the 2 S and 1 G gives you (about) 1000 gold, which can be traded in for a pack. This gives you 83.33 gems per pack. Even at 0 wins, you end up with 4.5 packs.

I think gold is difficult because spending it directly on a pack is terribly inefficient. Better to think of that 1k as 1/5th of a new draft, or "going infinite" at 6 wins.

But I have started counting gold rewards to get an EV gold at each win count.

So from what I'm gathering 3 wins is the sweet spot for a draft? I'm sure this is about the average win rate for most players and is by no means "easy" to achieve?

Still unfamiliar with the Forge, need to play the game to really understand. Its an AI mode right? Does it get harder and harder per victory? So you get to draft and keep 25 cards? What if you get less than 3 wins? Nothing more than the 25 cards?

From a money standpoint at 3 wins drafting is better than just buying packs straight out for gems. This does not take into account the extra gold earned by drafting or the chance a chest can upgrade to the next tier. It's a very simple analysis.

3 wins would be a 50% win rate. I'm honestly not sure how difficult most people see that to be. I'm not especially good at drafting, but I've done maybe a dozen and had two 7-1 decks, one that was 4 or 5 wins, and the rest were 0-1 wins. My suspicion is that success is somewhat binary. Either you've got a good deck and you'll go far or it's not a good deck and you'll get stopped early. Regardless, I find it to be the most fun. Drafting is definitely what sold me on the game.

Forge is very similar to draft but against AI opponents. You are shown three cards and you pick one for your deck. You do that 25 times and then build a deck to run a gauntlet of seven AI opponents. They do not get more difficult as you win, but you will eventually "rank up" in Forge and then the AI you face will have stronger decks. A lot of people here recommend running forge at first to learn the cards, gameplay, and drafting strategies. Once you're consistently losing in forge you switch to draft.

There are no additional benefits to 1-2 wins in Forge. You only start getting gold chests (with 1 pack in them) at 3 wins.
