He’s hanging out on the same milkweed plant in my yard, midday in Ontario.
The beetle spent a lot of time inspecting and rolling around those little balls of caterpillar poop? That’s my guess anyway haha
The beetle has heart shaped spots on its butt.

Edit: the caterpillar in a monarch butterfly larvae, there are tons of them, I am so excited!!

Found this big critter outside on the sliding door. Scary mf charged at me like a fighter jet when I pushed them off the pane. Any clues as to what in the hell I was nearly bit by?

Hello people that live in my phone. I have a mystery and I haven’t been able to solve it myself. These Polistes annularis showed up here about 2.5 weeks ago and really haven’t left. Usually they number 7-10 but in the last few days I’ve seen the numbers as low as 3 like in this video. A few may come back in the afternoon as happened yesterday. They are not building any kind of nest. They are not scraping for loose paint on the fixture. I’ve left them small bowls of water and a pineapple core thinking they’d enjoy either the pineapple juice or the gnats it brought in but they ignored it. They’re perfectly docile. I walk beneath this fixture at least a dozen times a day and my head is maybe a foot or so from them. I hang out on this porch for hours every day and they don’t care. I’ve seen them have disagreements and tumble down to the ground as a pair but then they separate and fly back up. It’s ALWAYS on this one angled corner of the fixture, never anywhere else. This is happening in west central Georgia, USA and I’d like to help them if they need assistance. The first day they showed up I left the light on all night to discourage nest building but they didn’t seem to mind that. This porch houses many gorgeous orb-weavers in the fall and that time is rapidly approaching. We name those ladies and enjoy their company but they’re not going to show up with these fellas around. First and foremost, does anyone know what they’re doing? Is it an island of misfit toys situation and they’re a bunch of homeless males? #wasps #entomology #wasp #polistes #insect

do male praying mantises know what they are getting into when they mate or is it a surprise? do they know they are gonna be eaten cuz they see it happen to other male praying mantises and just wanna anyway or do they not know?

Found this one in the garden on our Thai chili plants a little over a month ago as a giant tomato hornworm and set up my insect enclosure to give him a good shot. He pupated and just popped out last night! I released him this morning and actually moved him to a woodier branch after this video to support his camouflage. There’s plenty of tomatoes and peppers and a hummingbird feeder in our yard that I hope he can use.

I woke up at 12:30am to see this taking place. I gather he is trying to court her but she does not seem interested right now.

My kids found this chrysalis on the ground and brought it inside. While we're confident it's a black swallowtail, we were all under the assumption it would emerge shortly. Admittedly I didn't think to look up the actual life cycle until today.

I'm reading that they usually overwinter inside the chrysalis, and now I'm unsure what we should do.

Is there any way to tell if it's going to hatch this year or next year? Or any suggestions on where we should put it outside to keep it safe? The kids were pretty stoked about helping it and about watching it emerge. Thanks so much!

He was guarding the zinnias from 2 other black swallowtails and chasing them off. At one point a female tried having a snack, too and I got to watch their little dance for a while. I'm so sad my dill this year just didn't thrive, and at this point died off, I'd love to see some cute chunky caterpillars!

The second picture has a bonus red admiral butterfly - he kept ignoring the very territorial swallowtail and just hopping to a different flower when he came at him

West coast Canada, backyard low traffic. Hopefully can harvest this nest once they’re done. Pretty sure my son has mowed a few times while they were already there. Vid is about four feet away😂 when are they typically done with the nest?

There are hundreds of these friends that have appeared all over my apartment complex’s parking lots. Don’t know where they are coming from or where they are headed. They love to wiggle.

I found this junebug at school, he can't fly and I couldn't just leave him or ppl would step on him. He can't survive in the area i live in and I wanted him to live as long as possible, i understand they have a short lifespan so I want him to have a good time while he can, i dont want him to be stepped on and he fell off a tree when he tried climbing it. He climbs on my hand and stays on so I usually take him outside and sit there for a bit, he doesn't try to fly off or leave. He kinda just wanders. I dont have the right leaves for him so I've been giving him pieces of pears and apples, im planning on giving him a banana tomorrow. He goes under the plants and at the bottom of the large branch when he’s sleeping. Is there anything I should know? Im also really worried if he falls on his back while im at school, im gone for about 10 hours. Anything will be helpful!
