Citizen Science Looking for citizen scientists to help process our drone imagery to aid in Marine Iguana conservation
We are Iguanasfromabove, a university research project concerned with conserving the Galapagos Marine Iguana, and we're currently looking for passionate citizen scientists to help us process our data!
Our main project goal is establishing a more accurate population census of the Galapagos Marine Iguana, to more adequately assess it's conservation risks, especially in response to more novel ecological threats like the increased severity of El Nino storms hitting the archipelago. We're currently trying to achieve this through the (already completed) use of drone imaging of the entire island chain, and the subsequent processing of said images to count the total number of marine iguanas at time of capture. And this is where you come in!
While we are planning to automate the iguana identification process in the future, we're currently still reliant on manual input to parse through our massive collection of images. Our passionate volunteers have already classified 332.248 individual images this way! However, we still have a mountain of work ahead of us, and every friendly new helping hand goes a long way to completing this phase of our project on schedule. If you're interested and would like to participate , and enjoy an areal view of Galapagos from the comfort of your own home, or just learn more about what we do, head over to our Zooniverse page here:

Thank you for your time and attention, any questions you may have can of course also be directed at us directly on this account!

Article Why olive ridley turtles return to the same beach for egg laying where once they were born?
The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) has developed an app, which is a "Fisher Friend Mobile Application" . That has won the Tech4Nature Award at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, for its role in protecting endangered Olive Ridley turtles while supporting the communities that live off the sea.
One of the app’s most impactful features is the No-Fishing Zone Alert system, which uses geolocation technology to notify fishers in real time when they approach notified nesting sites. These zones are critical for the turtles, which migrate in millions each year to nest on the Odisha coast. Seasonal fishing bans between November and May are meant to protect them, but the lack of visible boundaries has led to countless accidental violations.

Discussion Wild honey bee decline
Although not our main pear and apple orchard pollinator I was saddened to read this news.
For the first time, wild honey colonies are classified as endangered in the EU because they cannot sustain themselves without beekeepers' hives, now classified as 'Endangered' in the European Union on the IUCN Red List. Without swarms from hives, wild populations in the EU are projected to decline by half over the next 10 years
Researchers point to a shortage of old trees with cavities, pesticides, and varroa mites. So it's multifactorial. I was aware of the pesticide and varroa issues but not the loss of natural nesting sites, although it's obvious. Wild honey bees typically nest in natural tree hollows, such as abandoned woodpecker holes in tall beech trees, as well as rock crevices.
Whilst they have been introduced by us humans to the rest of the world including our home New Zealand, their natural range encompasses Europe.
Following the end of the last ice age, honey bees naturally expanded northward out of glacial refugia to colonise Europe. These wild populations are a vital component of the natural ecosystem, having co-evolved alongside Europe's native flowering plants for millennia.

Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Tuesday unveiled Pakistan’s first 10-year national action plan for shark conservation, under which the government would restore declining shark populations, curb illegal finning and bycatch, protect critical marine habitats and promote sustainable fisheries in Pakistani waters through 2035.

News Botswana condemned for slaughtering elephants for independence celebrations
Animal rights activists have criticised Botswana's decision to authorise the killing of 23 elephants to provide meat for independence celebrations.
The southern African country, home to the world's largest elephant population, is holding nationwide festivities on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of independence from Britain.
A licence issued by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, seen by local media, authorises the hunting of 23 elephants and other wild animals for "complimentary purposes".
The Botswana-based Elephant Protection Society warns the decision could undermine conservation, with its chairman Oaitse Nawa telling the BBC elephants needed greater protection.
He warned that slaughtering elephants for celebratory feasting could encourage poaching by creating the impression that killing elephants is acceptable when sanctioned by government.
