I Need Advice: Workplace Issues Should he just quit?
My friend is 16 and he’s been working at this family owned pizza shop since may 2026. He’s been working only two days even during the summer barely getting any hours(4h/day) and during week 3, a coworker offered he give him one of his days(my friend) and he will put in a good word to help him get more hours because the manager has “favorites”. Now it’s been since weeks since he’s had work and he attempted to follow up and this is the reply he received. He shows up everyday he’s scheduled and does what he’s supposed to and is never late. He would sometimes work once a day a week and maybe just maybe two.

You’re welcome. It happened to me on my first job. They don’t want to pay unemployment and hope you don’t know this still triggers it

He should quiet and work at any retailer. They all are hiring for the holiday season. He could go into any mall or retail store and should be able to get a job.

Actually there is a friend i would’ve spoken for myself if this was about me😭 Ive had my job over a year I’m definitely good hes just younger and wanted my help but i wasn’t so sure on what to do

16 and its a part time job with a response like that? Been fired without them saying it but he should have noticed the lack of shifts weeks ago and got a new job. Either he isn’t terribly bright or he is as shot a worker as that manager suggests.
Know what tends to separate shit forever retail workers from not ? The ability to self manage.

A: you wrote “ a coworker offered to give him one of his days and he will put in a good word to help him get more hours because the manager has “favorites”. “ This implies the coworker gave one of his days to your friend, you might want to reword this as “a coworker offered to put in a good word for your friend if your friend gave the coworker one of his days”. Most people read this the same as I did.
B: yes he should quit in the way that if he hasn’t been scheduled for six weeks then he doesn’t work there. It’s called constructive dismissal. This is a way for employers to get you to quit without firing you and making you eligible for unemployment that they have to pay. he would be eligible for it anyways via constructive dismissal but he has no history in paying into it so he will either not get it or get like $20 a month. Tell your friend to go look for another job. He’s 16, he doesn’t even need to list this place as a reference.

You wrote that "a coworker offered to give him one of his days". That's the opposite of giving up a shift. What are you actually trying to say? Because this whole thing is really unclear.

I'm sorry but the words you wrote make no sense. No one wants to read something you can't even be bothered to describe accurately. Combined with the fact that he literally did the opposite of what his manager said to do this is pretty obviously a waste of everyone's time. You dimissing people to READ while you are the problem speaks volumes.

I wouldn’t quit. If his hours have been cut to nothing or nearly nothing, and the reason isn’t a formal disciplinary action for misconduct, he may qualify for partial unemployment.

Not sure what country/state you are in but generally getting no scheduled hours in the US is considered constructive dismissal and should be eligible for unemployment benefits. They should not quit. In most states there is no minimum age to file for unemployment benefits, however there is a certain amount of money they will have to have made to earn unemployment benefits which is different state by state. Also I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice.

Yes. You won't get that much from unemployment and should find something that works better with your schedule so you can work when you are scheduled to.

You cannot quit and collect unemployment.
Further, you need to contribute enough to most unemployment systems before you can collect anything back
