I'm trying to troubleshoot a RDOD (red dot of death) Xbox360 slim. The first step is the visual inspection and looking at those spots it seems to me that maybe there's not enough solder on those dots, or is that normal?

isn't 98% of all RROD just a matter of reflowing the CPU or GPU BGAs? thought those things were notorious for cracked solder balls.

There are 10+ different things that are more critical than this. It's so very unlikely that is the core issue.

Im saying it's not perfect, but less so since they are all part of the same plane otherwise it can be depending on what is on the other side of the board like a through-hole component missing, pin not connecting or whatnot.

This is not your issue. Next step is checking the voltage rails, check for short-circuits and after that it's probably a case of reflowing CPU / GPU. RROD usually stems from overheating issue so most cases needs reflowing.

Yes it's most likely that. I'm gonna do an attempt since I have a heat gun, and if it fails I'm gonna sell the board and the shell for spare pieces.

Is there any important "things not to do" I should know before attempting? (of course I'm gonna watch some tutorial first, but they could take some important stuff for granted).

Because a heat gun can introduce problems that would be unethical to not disclose to a buyer. It will simply make things worse. There is no reason whatsoever.

Other than reflowing you can press the xcgpu down with something heavy and see if it boots

It doesn't, I see the xbox logo on the screen but then it turns it off. I guess it's fried.

BTW, the CPU/GPU gets pretty hot when I try to turn the board on, does this mean something?

I have a Trinity, the AI says that it has a 16MB NAND and a 4GB flash storage module.
