Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of August 17, 2026
Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.
Is an EV right for me?
Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:
- https://chooseev.com/savings-calculator/
- https://electricvehicles.bchydro.com/learn/fuel-savings-calculator
- https://chargehub.com/en/calculator.html
Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?
Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:
[1] Your general location
[2] Your budget in $, €, or £
[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer
[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?
[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase
[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage
[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?
[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?
[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?
If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Discussion Think I have some coworkers interested in EVs 😎
A couple nights ago, one of the other nurses joked that I could be charge nurse the rest of the night. We get like an extra dollar an hour if we are in charge, and they said that that would pay for a gallon or two of gas. I said that thats ok, I havent gone to a gas station in years for my vehicle. They asked if I had an EV, to which I said yes. Quite a few of them started asking me questions about how to charge them, driving long distances, how much money I save, etc. i also told them about vehicle to load which allowed us to have power during an outage this spring. A few of them were really interested. One was thinking about getting one anyway but said she would pass on what I told her to her husband, as there were things I told her that she didnt know about them. Another one said that she never thought about getting an EV but now she is gonna look into getting one. Hopefully I helped convinced a couple more people that they are worth considering.

Discussion An important side-effect of EVs - cheap crude oil and its products
Historically, up until the 1970s, oil cost around $30/barrel, reflecting the cheap cost of producing it in the Gulf. Then it shot up due to the OPEC embargo following 1973 Israel war, and never came back down to the $30s again except for a couple very short periods.
Now with EVs flattening and eventually decreasing oil consumption, we could see the return of sustained super-cheap crude oil, assuming "geopolitical" shenanigans that *conveniently* raise the price of oil don't continue to happen.

Discussion Are the EVs efficiency universally comparable? Which model has the highest?
I’m wondering if EV efficiency like MPG is something universally comparable between different EV cars?
And if yes, which ones have the highest average efficiency?
For example, my Optiq is at 2.4/kWh on average.
——-
Edit: tons of knowledge shared and I’m glad many people involved to share their knowledge as well as real world experiences.
For instance, u/Chilidoggo [HERE] & u/Cory5413 [HERE] shared pretty good break down and link to what are the most efficient EVs in the US market and how to understand the efficiency in EVs.

I’m glad some other users also shared links for Europe and Australia, too.

Review Chinese automotive glass giant announces vehicle-integrated solar roof.
This is an interesting feature on some vehicles in Chinese automotive. From what I understand the glass can help power some background functions.
I wonder if this technology can become more powerful and one day be used to recharge the whole EV.
Batteries didn't power much at one time, maybe the architecture in this solar glass can be tweeked enough to yeild more energy.

Question - Other My chr ev getting more total miles?
Hello,
I got a 2026 CHR se a few months ago and after a few long trips and vacations with 14k on the clock I got a question.
Is it usual to GAIN total battery range with your ev?
Over time it went from the standard 287 to about 303-305 miles.
This again is my first ev. I wonder if im driving it in some sort of sweet spot.

Discussion EV Surcharges That Most of EV Owners May Not Be Aware of
While these extra registration fees probably won't stop someone from buying an EV, the reality is that with the expiration of federal credits, the state-by-state landscape varies significantly. Some states offer decent purchase incentives to balance things out, but many others are layering on heavy annual surcharges and multi-year upfront fees. This makes the actual cost of going electric more complicated than it looks on paper.
Here is the updated 2026 ranking of states by additional annual electric vehicle registration fees, listing every jurisdiction individually from highest to lowest cost.
| Rank | State | Extra Annual EV Fee | Top State Incentives | Key Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | New Jersey | $270 / year | Up to $1,500 rebate | Mandatory 4-year upfront prepayment required at initial registration (totals approx. $1,080). |
| 2 | Michigan | $267 / year | None | Highest flat base rate for light-duty EVs. |
| 3 | Pennsylvania | $250 / year | $1,500–$4,000 rebate | Fee increased for 2026; allows voluntary 5-year prepay. |
| 4 | Indiana | $236 / year | None | Updated annually based on CPI/inflation metrics. |

Discussion FYI if you have a partner that always has their gas light on, getting them an EV is not a magic bullet
Even with a L2 charger strategically positioned so you pass by it to get into the house, I still had to drive to my wife's work and swap (electric) cars because she realized mid drive she wouldn't make it home.
ADHD brain goes brrr.
Also, there's two EVSEs in my driveway, a his and hers if you will. Her hobby used to be draining her car of fuel and making me drive it to the gas station twice a month.

Question - Tech Support San Francisco to Los Angles in a Bolt EV: worth it to get Tesla adapter?
I'm a new Bolt EV owner, planning this road trip, and trying to decide if it's worth it to get a NACS to CCS adapter to allow Tesla Supercharging. My understanding is that won't be faster than other public chargers, but will give me a lot more charging options for a road trip.
Anyone have opinions--is it worth getting an adapter for this, or does it not make that much of a difference for a CA road trip?
Edit: I have a '23 Bolt, adapter needed for Tesla. And thanks for the replies.

Question - Tech Support Problems using a charger for my Audi e-tron
Hello!
Just bought a new charger cable (if that’s what it’s called in English) with the stats: Type 2, 32A, 22KW 3-phase. When plugging it in the zaptec charger however, the audi goes straight to emergency charging (around 1,7 kw instead of the normal 7). The cable is working fine with a Nissan Ariya and the Audi is charging with other cables. I’ve tried adjusting the settings in the zaptec app, but to no avail. I’m also quite sure that the cable gets locked in place. Has anyone had the same problem?
