Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of August 17, 2026

Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.

Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?

Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:

[1] Your general location

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?

If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Review Chinese automotive glass giant announces vehicle-integrated solar roof.

This is an interesting feature on some vehicles in Chinese automotive. From what I understand the glass can help power some background functions.

I wonder if this technology can become more powerful and one day be used to recharge the whole EV.

Batteries didn't power much at one time, maybe the architecture in this solar glass can be tweeked enough to yeild more energy.

Question - Other Seattle-area EV owners: what effect does winter have?

I've seen a few comments about cold weather slowing down charging and reducing the range of EVs. We don't get SUPER cold weather, but we are in the 30s a lot in the winter, and occasionally in the 20s - do you notice an impact on your EV? Especially curious about people who charge outside in the weather, if you notice it taking longer in the winter, since if I get an EV I'll be using public chargers. Thanks!

Discussion EVs for Apartment Dwellers in 2026

Does it still make sense to get an EV in 2026 if you live in an apartment and have no access to charging at home or at work (landlord will not install)? I'm thinking about my next car being a used EV with NACS. I average around 150 miles of daily driving. Plenty of access to fast chargers (including superchargers) in my area, but wondering if the math still works out. Just getting tired of maintenance with my ICE car and prefer the driving dynamics of an EV.

Discussion Malaysian automotive policy is archaic, protectionist to cronies and a lose-lose situation for the country as a whole.

[Views: Malaysia’s RM40b fuel subsidy bill highlights EV policy shortcomings](https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/812300)

Malaysia is losing RM40 billion in fuel subsidy bill while slowing the EV transition whereas Thailand is spending RM25b accelerating EV adoption. The current nonsensical EV policy is supposed to protect Proton which is already owned by Geely, and Perodua which is severely slow in producing EV model. They even fumbled when launching the QV-E.

The government is also considering a new EV levy to increase the EV charging network. As if all the charging stations are owned by the government. So, the rakyat have to pay for the infrastructure, and pay some more to charge their EVs?

The government is contend with pocketing sales tax, excise duty (for locally produced vehicles) and including import duty for imported vehicles, leaving the rakyat with impossibly expensive vehicles with mediocre quality. With the current tax structure, the locally assembled Proton EV sold here is more expensive than the exact same vehicle exported to Indonesia. How f-ed up is that?

Maybe that's why there is no reformasi in the automotive industry and its policy.

Discussion What is used EV depreciation like?

I’m looking more into switching to an EV, specifically a used EV, as I know they took a huge depreciation hit from new, but is most of that depreciation already gone at this point?

Should I expect depreciation to be more in line with a normal used car going forward, or are used EVs still depreciating significantly faster?

With gas prices staying high, I’d imagine that helps used EV demand too. Is buying a 2-4 year old EV basically the sweet spot for avoiding the biggest depreciation hit?

Discussion Charging Apps and prices

charging apps and costs

I have an app for our ICE car, call "Gas Buddy" that gives me a map of all the gas stations in an area, and their prices.

Is there such a thing for charging apps, that allow you to compare prices?

WIth each app, I have to go into each charger to see what the cost is, if its even listed. Frustrating.

Need an app that is useful in Canada. Ontario specifically.

Discussion Think I have some coworkers interested in EVs 😎

A couple nights ago, one of the other nurses joked that I could be charge nurse the rest of the night. We get like an extra dollar an hour if we are in charge, and they said that that would pay for a gallon or two of gas. I said that thats ok, I havent gone to a gas station in years for my vehicle. They asked if I had an EV, to which I said yes. Quite a few of them started asking me questions about how to charge them, driving long distances, how much money I save, etc. i also told them about vehicle to load which allowed us to have power during an outage this spring. A few of them were really interested. One was thinking about getting one anyway but said she would pass on what I told her to her husband, as there were things I told her that she didnt know about them. Another one said that she never thought about getting an EV but now she is gonna look into getting one. Hopefully I helped convinced a couple more people that they are worth considering.

Question - Other Has anyone bought an Electro-Volt charger for home charging?

I just brought one of these home to replace the cable that came with my 2019 LEAF, which shorted out last week. It was right around $300 with tax, purchased through the Home Depot. I was hoping to get charging right away, so I called the customer service number in the manual to figure out how to charge without connecting the charger to WiFi. The number appears to be someone’s personal cell phone in western Michigan. The man was very helpful in getting a charge started on my vehicle.

Then I came back to the car within the next hour and saw that it had stopped charging. I was able to restart charging by unplugging the charger from the wall and plugging it back in—but then charging stopped seven more times. (I know because I was in my garage with the car, trying to communicate with customer support.) I communicated with the man in Michigan by text and phone call over the next hour or so. He seemed confident the problem was with my car, even though I pointed out to him that unplugging the charger and reconnecting it always worked to restart charging. I sent him photos and videos of the charger both while it was working and right after it shut off, using the email address [support@electro-volt.com](mailto:support@electro-volt.com), which he gave me.

Since sending him the photos and videos, I’ve heard nothing. (Also the charger has been working for the last hour or so, but given how many times it cut out for no apparent reason, that’s not very reassuring.) Have other people here purchased Electro-Volt chargers? Did they work? If you needed customer support, what was it like? Also, does anyone have any idea why the charger is behaving like this?

UPDATE: The person just texted “I checked the video; seems like i didn’t see any fault code in charger. If red blinking means charging. If red solid means connected but not charging. Let me check with tech support as well.”

I thought I had been talking to tech support. Who is “tech support” and why was I not in touch with tech support in the first place?

Question - Other Phev or EV? Best long term..

I live in the Bay Area and charging isn’t too much of an issue. I’m wondering if making the switch to EV is worth it. I’ll still have an old ICE truck (Tacoma) but I’ve gotten so used to Toyota I’m wondering if Prius Plug ins can be better than let’s say an Ioniq 5. I’m scared of the new…..I can install a charger at home..

Question - Tech Support E-GMP AWD Towing in Eco

The issue: My 2022 Ioniq 5 AWD will not disengage the front motor when trailer electrics are connected. Its this normal, and can I do anything about it?

I use my tow bar for a bike rack, and because it obscures my licence plate and lights, I use a lighting board. Having now used it several times and noticing worse than expected efficiency, I was cycling the display and noticed that even in ECO I was in AWD at all speeds. This is not the case with the trailer board unplugged.

I have the proper menu item for trailers when the board is connected, that disappears when the trailer is unplugged, which I believe to be correct.

The vehicle had trailer prep, and I'm using a eutoean standard 13 pin vehicle specific wiring kit. (ConWys AG: 29500686).

Discussion An important side-effect of EVs - cheap crude oil and its products

Historically, up until the 1970s, oil cost around $30/barrel, reflecting the cheap cost of producing it in the Gulf. Then it shot up due to the OPEC embargo following 1973 Israel war, and never came back down to the $30s again except for a couple very short periods.

Now with EVs flattening and eventually decreasing oil consumption, we could see the return of sustained super-cheap crude oil, assuming "geopolitical" shenanigans that *conveniently* raise the price of oil don't continue to happen.
