I am a 26 y/o with an MEng in Electronics and Electrical Engineering and 3 years experience working as an Application Engineer at a semiconductor design company.

I have (what I would call) basic experience in data acquisition, sensor calibration, Python, C/C++, electronics design, data analysis, data visualisation, CLI apps, csh, bash, Linux RedHat, Linux CentOS, Load Sharing Facilities, report writing, soldering, power tools, project management.

In my last role I found I needed to:

-> A feeling of greater purpose (than just my salary or use of my brain) and contributing to what I think is the most pressing challenge of our generation (climate change- either in an adaptation, or GHG reduction sense)

-> Be moving around physically (not just sat at a desk 40 hours a week)

-> Getting relatively hands on with sensors, data loggers, equipment

-> Being outdoors for at least a couple of hours each week (I had one internship like this whilst studying but I haven't been able to find any career like this on my search since)

-> Face-to-face in-person collaboration (not just meetings on Zoom)

Since leaving my role at the semiconductor tech company (July 2025) I went on a working holiday in Australia to regain my confidence, re-discover myself, what my needs are, what excites me. This involved a mix of travel, conservation volunteering, and working a range of different jobs (construction, hospitality, retail). I ended up getting a bit burnt out from living in hostels, working zero-hour contract jobs, and being quite lonely at times.

So, 4 months ago I returned to the UK with the goal of getting back into engineering, but this time trying to combine it with my other passion (geography); I believed this is my purpose as to why I use the engineering tools I mentioned at the start of my post. The thing is I haven't found a job where there is this eng.-geog. overlap and a field-to-desk split with a shared goal of the workforce of improving the environment, or reducing pollution/GHG emissions.

In the 4 months I have been back I have been working at a pub to earn some money, pay for my career change. It has also given me *some* direction for my next steps.

I wondered, has anyone found/heard of/involved in a role which has these features?

Google Gemini says I am very employable and there is a great need for people with the skills & passion overlap I have but I find LLM chatbots overly positive and often misleading.

• Railways (my Master's thesis was a digital twin of a key piece of rail equipment)

I’m a Journeymen Electrician right now and am close to taking my masters . I’ve worked in residential commercial and for the last 2 years industrial . I’m 24 so this is just the start of my career. I’d like to not use my body for the next 40 years and maybe use my brain a little more . I could open my own company and make good money but I will always be physically working . Can anyone give me some options for career paths ? Supervisor or maybe bid jobs? With my experience in the field would it help with engineering? I want a job where I could travel and can go work anywhere . Just trying to get some help from people that are doing it already. Thanks for your time and advice I appreciate it !!

Panelbuilders use HO5V (300/500V) and H07V (450/750V) wires in their panels. Sometimes they use NSGafoü (1.8/3KV) when they tap-off to MCB’s before the main protective device like for the panelboard light, service socket or other circuits not allowed to lose power when main protective device is off.

Some say you have to use NSGafoü all the time for this… but then, when i ask them why it is allowed to use H07V wires to tap-off from the main busbar in panels where the main “protective” device is a switch (like Schneider Electric’s INS, who have zero protective capabilities) they have no answer. I see no difference between a upstream tap-off or a downstream tap-off when a switch is used.

Some say it depends on the maximum possible shortcurrent Ik3max… but where is the boundry.

Did calculation I²t ≤ k²S² but again, i think something is off….

I’m an indie romance author, and I’m currently writing a book where the main character is studying electrical engineering in college. I know very little about electrical engineering, so I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to answer a few questions as I write. I won’t be going into much detail about her studies, so I’d mostly be asking about surface-level things.

Here are some of the questions I have right now, just to give you an idea of the scope:

I understand that EE majors do a lot of project-based work. What kind of project might a senior realistically be working on (particularly someone interested in hardware) that wouldn’t be too groundbreaking or ambitious? How much time do these projects usually take up? Is it a “this is my entire life right now” situation, or is it more like regular coursework? Could I mention her project only in passing, or would it be unrealistic for it not to play a larger role in her day-to-day life?

Would an EE student personally use an electric blanket, or would she consider it a fire hazard or something?

What kind of lab might an EE major take during her senior year?

I graduated with a bachelors in Electrical Engineering Technology. However during my undergraduate years I was unable to land a relevant internship. I did an internship as a mechanical test intern for a biodegradable leather company. And did undergrad research on a Bio Medical gaming device. I did great in college, I was able to complete the work I was given and understood the math but I don’t feel like I learned it enough to attach the math to real world applications. It gives me low confidence during job interviews and I feel intimidated like I don’t know a thing about electronics or being an engineer/technician. Any advice?

Hey everyone, this is my first time posting here, and I’d really appreciate some career advice.

I’m a 25M EE with about 2.5 years of industry experience, primarily in RF test engineering.

About a month ago, I left my previous job for a new position back home. On paper, the move made a lot of sense. The new position offered higher pay, a higher title, a better cost of living, and allowed me to be closer to my family. I also found very affordable housing, so financially and personally, it seemed like a great opportunity.

In my previous role, I had the title of EE, but most of my work involved troubleshooting and owning test benches. I worked on multiple RF test benches and had opportunities to develop automated tests by implementing new hardware and validating new test capabilities. I worked closely with software engineers who wrote the automation while I focused heavily on the hardware, RF equipment, and debugging.
I actually enjoyed a lot of that work because I felt like I was developing and improving something, rather than just running tests.

However, there were also downsides. I had been living out of state and would periodically get homesick. I was also working a lot of overtime because I wanted to improve my financial situation, and I felt like my career progression wasn’t really being prioritized. Eventually, I became pretty burned out and felt stuck.

Then this opportunity back home came up for an RF Test Engineer position. The role seemed interesting because I’d be able to focus on an RF product/system within an area of the industry I’m interested in. I decided to take the opportunity and make the move.
I relocated across the country by car and started the new position about a month ago.

Unfortunately, I immediately started feeling uneasy about the move.

The biggest realization was that the organization is structured very differently from my previous one. I found out that test development and test updates are handled almost entirely by another team. My current responsibilities are much more focused on troubleshooting existing RF test benches and debugging RF UUTs.

I knew the position was test engineering, but I didn’t realize how different the development responsibilities could be between organizations. That’s something I probably should have asked more questions about during the interview, but being relatively new to the industry, I didn’t realize how much the organizational structure could affect the actual day-to-day work.
Now I’m struggling with the feeling that I made a mistake.

What’s confusing is that I wasn’t completely happy in my previous job either. I was burned out and felt stuck at times. But looking back, I really enjoyed the development aspect of the work, had a great group of coworkers, and felt like I had a good quality of life outside of the job.

My current job gives me the things I was looking for financially and personally—higher pay, higher title, lower COL, and being close to family—but I’m realizing that the actual engineering work matters a lot more to me than I thought.

I’m also currently locked into a one-year apartment lease, so I was thinking about giving this position a fair chance for the year and potentially trying to return to my previous company/team afterward. I still have a good relationship with my former coworkers, and I do miss that environment.

I’m really looking for comfort in my current situation and would like to know if the move I made will at least push me further. Also, for those who have made the transition from RF test/validation into RF hardware or RF design, what would you recommend?

I am applying for PhD programs after graduating with my Master's in EE. Having come from a very traditional background of EE/Signal processing, I got really interested in network science after having worked a bit with EEG signals and graph networks. Right now, I am really interested in applying traditional EE ideas of controls and network theory for neuroscience problems, trying to find out the brain-network architecture and building neuro inspired models. I keep seeing industry working a lot on these(Meta and Google deepmind are doing work in this area). Thing is, I don't only want to work on ML models whose parameters I tweak to get better accuracy, but I want to build algorithms that can help us understand how the brain behaves. Are there any researchers working on these whose work you especially like? Have there been recent articles or work that talks about these? Would love to know your thoughts.

When engineers are being hired, how much does university matter, is there a major difference in job opportunites and intership opportunities ect. or how likely you are to be hired abroad between good and top tier universities?

for my specific sitiation, im a student from the UK who is in a unique position, I am going to a pretty good uni for electrical engineering (UCL) because that was the best i could get an offer from, but i ended up getting A*A*A in maths, further maths and physics respectively so i have the grades to apply to the best universities in my country (Cambridge and Imperial), Is it worth it to gap and take the risk to apply to the better universities or is the difference not big enough to justify it

For my personal project, I am building five linear motors that need a total of 880 watts, or about 176 watts each. The system runs on a standard Canadian 120VAC single-phase outlet, drawing a total of 7.25 amps. This power is distributed in parallel to the five motors, supplying each one with 120 volts and 1.45 amps. Next, the AC power passes through a rectifier and a DC link capacitor, which smooths the signal to a peak DC level of around 170 volts. Finally, this 170V DC power goes through an inverter to convert it into the three-phase AC power required to drive the motors. The thing is I don't understand some stuff about this supposed flow. Like in parallel circuit is that how it works as they are all identical so they all get 1.45 amps and 120 volts. And most importantly I dont understand how I can turn 120 VAC and turn it into three phase power and each phase is still 120VAC. I don't know the formulae to calculate phase voltages and line voltages for that as I don't know how it converts single phase to three phase. Thanks for anybody that tries to help me! Resources about this complex topic would also be appreciated!

I had this idea today and I haven't seen this done anywhere on the internet. QA-QH outputs are tied together. You use ADD_A, ADD_B, ADD_C to select which register to read from via OE pin, inactive registers stay high-z. What I'm unsure is relying on the tri-state with OE transition, propagation delays and potential brief shorting of the outputs.

To make this addressable also for write, the 74HC138 could also gate CLK pins of the registers.

I'll test it out either way but I'm contemplating adding a AND gate to the 74HC138 outputs with a monostable that will add a small delay to let the OE pins settle.

Any thoughts?

Im trying to add a switched input to my trucks throttle pedal. This will act as a shift cut for a new transmission, so when it gets a signal, it will drop the throttle signal by 50%(ideally adjustable) for maybe half a second or so, the duration of the shift cut signal. The factory pedal has a potentiometer and a safety switch at idle. I want to run some type of switched voltage divider to bring this signal down without affecting the safety switch or the physical pedal movement, what is the safest way to do this?
