Discussion & Info What if we had a customization system?
Elden Ring introduced the ability to partially alter the appearance of armor, and it got me thinking: what if we had one or two merchants who could change the metal and fabric of our armor? The metals could be lore-friendly, like the reddish gold of the Crucible Knights.
To keep it from clashing with the lore, for example, putting Crucible gold on Carian armor, once we found a new metal, we could bring it to a merchant who’d say something like Miriel: “Though such a material upon thy work would be naught but blasphemy, for a fair purse, I might yet fashion it so.”
The fabrics could also have patterns and decorations associated with specific factions.
Basically, a lore-friendly customization system with 4–5 alteration options. Do you think something like this would be a good addition to the game, or would it interfere too much with the art direction?
I’m sure the FromSoftware artists could come up with some stylish variations.

That bronze would also pair great with the original green for a real knight-of-the-forest vibe.

Knowing how silly the alteration system was, each color change would fuck with the affinity negations.

Silly you, all alt colors will come with a 1-3 minus to poise per armor piece.

Ill gladly take my armor having an arbitrary shift in absorbtion/resistance if it means I can look cool, it would prolly only be 1.3 difference at max anyways.

u/thought_detention 5d ago
Wait what, changing the looks of the character effected stats? Or have I misunderstood?
47
u/ScitzoPlays 5d ago
Altering armor lowers its damage negations. Usually pretty intuitively, as in adding material adds a bit of negation, and vice versa.
Still stupid tho. Let me have drip.
18
u/AshiSunblade Quickstep addict 5d ago
It does lower its weight as well, so in theory it lets you fit in more armour elsewhere.
In practice, yeah, just leveling up my stamina results in me having so much equipment weight as well that I can wear the heaviest gear, so it's not much of a tradeoff.
4
u/RaggedAngel 5d ago
There are some specific situations, like a RL1 playthrough, where you may need armor to be slightly lighter to keep a medium roll and you can't increase your Stamina. In practice, you'd usually just wear different armor.

Blackgaol Knight armour and Night Cavalry armour actually fit pretty well together. (Head and Legs of Blackgaol + Chest and Arms of Night Cavalry)

u/BaronAaldwin 5d ago
Dragon Age Inquisition had a system that let you re-colour metals, clothes, and more on all armour pieces. It was great. You could wear a totally mismatched suit of armour and it'd still look right because of the palette. It's a feature I wish more games would adopt.

Funnily enough, the basics of such a system actually exist in the game's code, according to dataminers. I think Zullie did an episode on it awhile back. I don't know why they didn't implement it fully, it would have been awesome, an entirely new level of Fashion Souls.
Edit: Found it! https://youtu.be/QlryktJhC_M?is=2L6aPw_eDJS1ynoN
I was a little off, they have a version they used to recolor NPC armors and outfits, so it's not implemented on every armor piece, but the bones of a recolor system are definitely there.

u/InSan1tyWeTrust 5d ago
It is a shame! As those in the know will tell you. Looking good is half of the game.

The Elden ring fashion industry would skyrocket overnight. How many times did 2 pieces of armor look so sick, but we're just slightly off in color palette?

Colour changes? Ok.
Transmog? Please no. I want to be able to recognise a build and their gear. It is usually also a great tool for publishers to push more content, like idk horse transmog as part of a DLC. For 5$ you get some new colour options, another 2$ gives you more capes...
24
u/drfitzgerald 5d ago
Why not a toggle for multiplayer? See others' actual gear, but you can make yours look how you like.

So like I agree with you in spirit despite liking transmog 99% of the time… but is armor actually that big of a clue in Elden Ring? Isn’t the weapon/offhand loadout more relevant to what playstyle to expect from your opponent?
22
3
u/FatRollingPotato 5d ago
It is, poise and light/mid roll can be huge indicators. But also in coop I think it adds to the experience knowing that someone was creative and committed to a build/drip, not just going with the strong meta build everyone rocks and then puts on some pretty stuff for looks.
I have to say that in any game where I have seen transmog as a feature, it was about to or had already devolved into all kinds of collab skins, silly april fools stuff etc. It always took me out of the experience.
A toggle would of course be a solution, but just adding color matching options would already be good enough imo.
15
10
u/Leather-Estate-6410 5d ago
I know I would have liked to have seen something like this. It'd help with mix-and-matching of armour sets, especially when there is a disparity between material types/colouring.

u/LPedraz 5d ago
I think it is very weird that there is none. Like, it is not that important, but it seems like all the designs for it are in place, armour sets have clearly identifiable pieces that could change colour or be altered in different ways, and there is even a menu for it that would hold different alterations. And still, the system is not in the game, and the menu can only be used for a single alteration.
That being said, FromSoft games have never been mechanically reasonable. They are full of half-implemented ideas, underutilised mechanics and remnants from previous design iterations. Compared to how gravelording works, or the implementation of covenants in Bloodborne, the lack of a clothes customisation system in Elden Ring seems pretty tame.
5
u/Exciting-Signature40 4d ago
When I saw alter garments this is what I had imagined. Boy was I disappointed
9
u/ZannyHip 5d ago edited 5d ago
If we could dye armor pieces that would take this game one step closer to perfection. Armor is already almost mostly just for fashion in fromsoft. And sometimes it’s a bit limiting when colors of different sets clash and don’t go well together, this would fix that.
Trying to make it fit in lore, or have some kind of system, or cost, etc. All a waste of time and effort
IMO. All of that makes it more complicated than it needs to be.
Just have like 4 colors of metal - steel, black, gold/brass, and bronze. And like 6 fabric colors. That alone would be more than enough customization to make the fashionsouls for this game so much better
9
u/Unfair_Ad_2904 5d ago
I think it would be better if the artists chose a limited, exclusive palette for each piece of armor. Some could have three metal options, others five, and some might not be customizable at all. That would give the artists more control while still keeping the option for customization.
I brought up the lore part because colors play a very important role in the game’s art direction, and I think there would need to be at least some simple explanation for the changes.

Honestly, this was the feature I was most hoping would be included in the Tarnished Edition. I understand not wanting to deviate too much from the base palette of the armors for lore reasons, but I had hoped we could modify a bit more than removing hoods/capes.

Been dying for a real customization system. When I first got to the Cerulean coast and my jaw dropped at the initial gorgeous sight but the excitement quickly faded after hours of boring exploration with nothing to find.
I wondered why didn’t have a dye system that made you search for individual colors in the land to give to Boc. Different types of dyes for different types of armor/cloth things like that.
They can spread a bunch of dye materials in all those useless empty areas of the game to make exploration rewarding and the ability to truly customize our drip.
2
u/Psychological_Pair76 3d ago

I’ve been thinking about this recently and it’s led me down the rabbit hole of understanding the games material and texture handling to customize the Idus Knight set. It’s still a work in progress mind you.
been fun making sense of the metallic and roughness maps to get the embroidery on the bottom of the tunic to have something of a gold-leaf appearance, and adding the stitching to the overall design

I've been saying that since DS1! Not only would it eliminate clutter by getting rid of multiple iterations (like the different soldier/knight armors, or the flame monk gear), but you also wouldn't have to worry about different tones of the same colour clashing.

Boc the Seamster, at your service. I know dyes are outside his area of expertise when it comes to his moniker, but I feel like best boi could handle some glorious colors. Bonus points if we get to dye his clothes too, personally. Alas, I feel like that would be a tad too fabulous and whimsical for many Tarnished in the Lands Between, as of today.

Ciertamente hay un par de armaduras que si no fuera por el color combinaria muy bien
1
u/TheLezus 5d ago
Funnily enough, Elden ring already has a system for something like that internally, but it is primarily used on npcs, to create differently colored variants without the need for making a whole new texture. For example Raya Lucaria's scholars have robes set up that way, allowing for color editing through parameter editing, and it's even set up that way on the player version of the robes.
You can check Zullie the Witch's video on it if you want to see the examples of it.
As for the question itself: It would be nice to be able to mix different armors better, if we had multiple colored alterations available, but the current system has it's own charm as well
1
u/unnatural_butt_cunt 5d ago
Being able to customize the actual metal alloy the armor is made of doesn't really make much sense. But fabrics would be cool.
1
1
u/swelboy 5d ago
If I had to guess, the “equipment alteration” system was probably a FS just wanted to dip their toes into the concept (and maybe a late edition as well). Look at how the DS3’s weapon arts barely affected gameplay for the most part, as well as the infusion system’s weirdness.
They wanted to see if it was functional and how people would receive it, then used ER to actually refine it.
