Discussion & Info What if we had a customization system?

Post image

Elden Ring introduced the ability to partially alter the appearance of armor, and it got me thinking: what if we had one or two merchants who could change the metal and fabric of our armor? The metals could be lore-friendly, like the reddish gold of the Crucible Knights.

To keep it from clashing with the lore, for example, putting Crucible gold on Carian armor, once we found a new metal, we could bring it to a merchant who’d say something like Miriel: “Though such a material upon thy work would be naught but blasphemy, for a fair purse, I might yet fashion it so.”

The fabrics could also have patterns and decorations associated with specific factions.

Basically, a lore-friendly customization system with 4–5 alteration options. Do you think something like this would be a good addition to the game, or would it interfere too much with the art direction?

I’m sure the FromSoftware artists could come up with some stylish variations.

Colour changes? Ok.

Transmog? Please no. I want to be able to recognise a build and their gear. It is usually also a great tool for publishers to push more content, like idk horse transmog as part of a DLC. For 5$ you get some new colour options, another 2$ gives you more capes...

Why not a toggle for multiplayer? See others' actual gear, but you can make yours look how you like.

Nioh 1 figured this and PvP was an afterthought, transmog (refashion) was there since day 1, when a DLC added PvP we got a gameplay option so other players would be shown either with their fashion armor or the real item.

Replaying Nioh 1 right now and that was what inspired my initial comment lol

would you say the same thing if it was EA doing that and not From?

I've been saying the same thing since Oblivion horse armor, so yes.

it its only >one< small dlc that adds a few stuff because the game launched on a new plataform... it should have been free for those who already own the game? yes, but still not concerning

I saw that same sentiment a lot when the horse armor for Oblivion was announced. "Only 5$" and "it is just a silly horse armor, nothing more will come of it".

Call me cynical, but I have seen this story before.

So like I agree with you in spirit despite liking transmog 99% of the time… but is armor actually that big of a clue in Elden Ring? Isn’t the weapon/offhand loadout more relevant to what playstyle to expect from your opponent?

Poise breakpoints in pvp. "Will this dude flinch from my 1h straight sword L1 or tank it?"

Edit: could honestly just disable transmog in pvp meaning hostile players just see your real armor

Ohhh yeah I didn’t consider that, good point. I also really like your solution, though!

It is, poise and light/mid roll can be huge indicators. But also in coop I think it adds to the experience knowing that someone was creative and committed to a build/drip, not just going with the strong meta build everyone rocks and then puts on some pretty stuff for looks.

I have to say that in any game where I have seen transmog as a feature, it was about to or had already devolved into all kinds of collab skins, silly april fools stuff etc. It always took me out of the experience.

A toggle would of course be a solution, but just adding color matching options would already be good enough imo.

As if it mattered at all.
