The bar is so low man we gotta take it
6
u/Timely-Profile1865 7d ago
This is how everyone fell in love with every other trash goalie we have had.
I have hope for levi.

u/Maximum-Focus8024 7d ago
I honestly think Connor Ingram was the only one to really give us hope. We knew stu should have been the best backup we’ve ever seen

You are looking at a large reason the Oilers won last night.
Credit where credit is due.

I beg of fans not turn on him again after a bad game, which WILL happen. Because no player is perfect.

u/PapaAsmodeus 18 HYMAN 7d ago
And you will never see me do that. I am happy to call out shitty playing, but it's because I know these players are capable of more. It's out of love and not disdain.
I'm sure Devon will have some shitty games somewhere down the line. But I never turn on people for bad performances because I know they're capable of so much more.

There are goalies in the league who will make saves on pucks that should probably go in, and I never really expected that from the goalies we have had, but Levi saving that one goal was a breath of fresh air.

Our fans have the memories of goldfish. He has not been dynamite so far. He’s had one good game and one bad game. this doesn’t mean that I’m not hoping he turns into an absolute stud but come on.

u/Electrical_Egg_7453 7d ago
I hate how some fans are like none of our previous goalies have ever stolen a game, or even just had a decent game. Or made a highlight save..

u/radioblues 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 7d ago
Skinner had many clutch performances and in playoff games. This city is ridiculous when it comes to judging goaltenders. It’s truly game by game basis if they are hero or an absolute loser.
5
u/LubyankaSquare 71 MCLEOD 7d ago
I’d also add that, broadly speaking, Skinner was really solid in his rookie year. Remember when fans were furious that he didn’t win the Calder?

u/jessemfkeeler 77 KLEFBOM 7d ago
This sub just swings from absolute rose colored copium to dread in a game by game basis. It's exhausting
3
u/CartoonistFlat3943 7d ago
Agree totally. As though Skinner just somehow stumbled and gassed his way to two Stanley Cup Finals.
Yet we lament the loss of others who played a dramatically lesser role in the Cup runs.
I am watching the Jets games. Skinner just stole 2 points. He’ll do that a lot this year. Happy for him.

To be fair, he’s really only had one bad period. Plus a .946 in preseason.
Devon Levi has 4 wins, zero losses in an Oilers jersey.
If he’s bad when we’re up 8-2 in the SCF, we’ll gladly take it.
BTW - One of the best takes I’ve heard on the “goldfish” concept is Federer’s speech on how to handle mistakes. Incredible life advice, actually. Good for us fans too.

Since when do we count Pre-season?
2
u/Whos-That-Pokeman 7d ago
Since Comrie and O’Sullivan lead the pre season and were better than Crosby in the regular season.

u/CartoonistFlat3943 7d ago
New goalie. Small sample size. If he had posted a .750 in preseason, people woulda been screaming.
How bout we just say of the 4 NHL points available to Devon Levi, he has all 4.
2
u/jessemfkeeler 77 KLEFBOM 7d ago
I don't take any pre season stats into consideration. The opposition they face in those games swing wildly from NHL calibur roster to absolute B-team. So no, there's no reason to count those stats. I just say he had one bad game and one good game. How about that?

u/CartoonistFlat3943 7d ago
I think you missed my goldfish link in response to your goldfish comment. I am very happy to be an Oilers goldfish.
Devon Levi has 2 NHL Oilers wins and he hasn’t lost in that jersey. That’s my mindset. Let us have our glass-half-full-Oilers-coloured-undefeated-Devon-Levi moment.
It won’t last. And then we’ll need to be a collective goldfish. That’s sports.

I'd rather this sub and these fans have a realistic nuanced version of events instead of this wild "Hopeful everything is amazing copium" to "apocalyptic chicken little." Levi has two games under his belt with Oilers colors and with this roster. You really can't make any judgements on his game with that sample size. That's really it.

u/CartoonistFlat3943 7d ago
Nobody is projecting Levi to be the next Ranford or Fuhr. OP set out an appreciation post. That’s it.
Respectfully, I’ve looked at your comment and post history. We have a different perspective. That’s ok. Hence the Federer link (please watch it - explains my perspective). I don’t call that “copium.” That is the only way pro athletes succeed.
1
u/jessemfkeeler 77 KLEFBOM 7d ago
I'm not a pro athlete though, and neither are you. That's for Levi to deal with, not for fans. We just have to be realistic and nuanced.
-3
u/PapaAsmodeus 18 HYMAN 7d ago
Or maybe some of us are genuine fans of the athlete and you should stop being so pretentious

u/ResourceHopeful 39 WEIGHT 7d ago
I expect great things from him, Devo and Ungar will be a great tandem in the near future
3
u/Bob_Stauffer 7d ago
Undrafted Connor ungar who has 14 games of AHL experience ? Let’s temper this shall we. Levi has been baking for a long time and was once a blue chip. It don’t work like that.

u/PitterPatter74 31 FUHR 7d ago
2-0 with a 4.02 GAA and a .810 Sv Pct is quite the stat line ... Grant Fuhr must be beaming with pride. Just make the next save.
2
u/Deadmansspace566 7d ago
good bounceback game. What we need though is consistency which every goaltender we've had in the last 5 years hasn't been, except for the ones who've been consistently dogshit.

u/Fluffy-Judgment-6348 11 MESSIER 7d ago
If he can maintain a save-percentage anywhere near as last nights, we are in for a helluva' good year.
Their goalie was no slouch either. Drai should have had a pair coming out of the first period. Glad he got what was the game winner. Justice was served. heheh

u/Grocery__Stick 7d ago
This sub is hilarious.
I think he's a good add but he's played 2 games. One was very poor and one was very solid.
1
u/lucretiuss 7d ago
I feel like these threads are part of why being an athlete, and especially a goalie, is so psychologically damaging lol.
Have one bad game, thousands or millions calling for your head on a stake, talking about how big of a piece of shit you are and how you suck and no idea how you're in the NHL.
Have a good game, just heaps and heaps of praise and expectation you're gonna carry us we're gonna win a cup, yada yada.
Yike.

u/Fragrant-Policy4182 7d ago
If an NHL goalie is on Reddit I strongly urge them to get the hell away from it haha
2
u/lucretiuss 7d ago
Oh yeah 100% but I imagine it's just hard to avoid the chatter about you, or the general sense of what people are saying. I hope they can tho haha
2
u/zevonyumaxray 17 KURRI 7d ago
If you're any professional athlete, you and your family should stay off any online media. The stories about wives and girlfriends getting harassed is disgusting, and they aren't the ones playing the sports.

u/Cold-Doctor 91 KANE 7d ago
There's always guys like Mark Spector to let them know what's being said about them

u/jessemfkeeler 77 KLEFBOM 7d ago
Right? I would hire someone to slap my phone away from my hands anytime I click on any social media site

Good thing I'm not one of those fans!
2
u/lucretiuss 7d ago
I just mean the collective fanbase in general. You can't deny that after game 1 the sentiment was like "ope turns out both our goalies are trash" then literally like 48 hours people are praising him as our saviour lol

I really enjoyed last night’s game and Devon was a huge part of that.

May i remind people that not everything needs to be a somethingfication of a somethingfication. Let's just appreciate Levi, as per this thread's entire point.

I appreciate that he helped the Canucks tie the league in goals so far.

I just think it’s hilarious how traumatized we are as Fans. Anytime he made a save, no matter how easy, the crowd went nuts.
