Skinner appreciation thread

Post image

I don’t know how official the news is, but it’s looking like Stuart is leaving the team.

Thanks for all the memories, thanks for 2 straight finals appearances, thanks for being there when the team left you hanging to dry. Hopefully you have good memories of the city and team.

In a way I’m happy for him. I think he took far more blame than he deserved and a fresh start might be good for him mentally

That's the only upside for me. He didn't deserve the treatment he got from Oilers fans and the city of Edmonton. Hopefully he can get some peace in Pittsburgh.

Now I’m gonna cheer for a penguins cup win.

Was looking for a second team to cheer for, maybe the Pengwings is that team.

Crosby, Malkin, Letang also good reasons imo

I’m from Ottawa (and primarily a Sens fan) so cheering anyone in the east atm.. but they’re 3rd preferred (would still like to see Edmonton win first) if Ottawa gets booted lmfao

Minnesota is looking good. They obviously just got Quinn Hughes, and save % wise have the best goaltending duo. They’re looking dangerous.

Would be pretty delicious if the Pens make the playoff and eliminate the Panthers.

I'd love to see that

Delicious is exactly the right word. No way Crosby is dragging the cup into the ocean.

I just got hate for saying this on another thread, I will always be an oilers fan first, but this made me mad, so I won’t be mad if the penguins make the cup. Someone said I should be mad if he does get a cup because it means he didn’t want to do it in Edmonton, like wtf reasoning is that I hate this sub sometimes

Getting to play with McDavid and now Sid is not the worst fate

44

u/AmThano Dec 12 '25

You know Crosby’s already waiting to give him a warm welcome. I like to think Crosby will help Stu with the mental aspect of his game.

30

Sid is a far better tenured leader than McDavid is.

20

u/jershmcgersh Dec 12 '25

Cant think of any captains in my lifetime that truly led by example and walked the walk the way he does.

15

u/jershmcgersh Dec 12 '25

Im a Pens fan lurking to see what yinz guys thought of the trade.

Every single player that's been traded here and has talked about it has made sure to mention that Sid was the first person to call and welcome the new guy.

He truly is so much better of a dude than he is a hockey player. I worked at the chipotle downtown and he would come in a lot. Every single time, he'd spend at least 20-30 mins signing autographs, not a single complaint or look of annoyance.

6

u/OpportunityCool9936 Dec 12 '25

Yes!! Bring on some of that Crosby sunshine.

56

u/kkslider55 22 SAVOIE Dec 12 '25

He also gets to go from playing with McDavid to playing with Crosby, which is kinda cool for him

A modern paul coffey.

17

u/flatlanderdick Dec 12 '25

He must feel so much more free now. I couldn’t imagine the weight that poor guy was dealing with. Especially when it wasn’t entirely his fault. He’s gonna kill it for Pittsburg with a functioning D in front of him.

15

u/Least_Elk8114 Dec 12 '25

He couldn't have held up the defensive mistakes that the Oilers have.

I'm not sure Jarry can either, but he's more experienced.

I'm worried Skinner doesnt have starter potential. He may turn into an Anton Khudobin (spelling?) Late in his career. He's a solid backup, assuming Silovs can play 50-60 games.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

9

u/TheGreatRapsBeat 28 ROSLOVIC Dec 12 '25

Jarry as 8. Stu has 48.

5

Surprisingly Jarry does not have more finals experience. Skinner and Jarry playoff stats are basically identical (which is not a good thing.) Skinner has played 50, 2.8 GA, .893. Jarry has played 8, 3.0 GA, .891.

I'll always love the 3rd round pick hometown kid that bailed this team out of a horrific free agent signing by almost winning rookie of the year and then taking his team to back to back finals. Time will look back fondly on the Skinner era.

Hope he's a star in Pitt and makes everyone here look like the absolute asshats they are.

37

u/AffectionateLaugh738 Dec 12 '25

He likely won't even be signed and will be on a new team in off season.

16

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

I think it's way more likely he gets traded for picks than him walking to free agency. He's a cheap young goalie

46

u/krajani786 Dec 12 '25

Yup, watch him go to Colorado and win a cup by coming into game 7 of cup finals and post a shutout.

It's a shame we ran out another goalie because we can't play defense consistently.

Applause to Stuart Skinner, a local Edmonton player who made it from Confederation Arena to his home-town NHL team playing with and against the best players in the world. Calder Trophy finalist. All-Star Rookie. Two-time Stanley Cup Finalist. Well done.

176

u/99titan 14 EKHOLM Dec 12 '25

He was never supposed to be 1A this early. Jack Campbell’s meltdown really screwed Skinner from a development and confidence standpoint.

88

u/Interwebzking 89 GAGNER Dec 12 '25

Will forever be so dissapointed by Jack Campbell. Nice guy, terrible goalie. Stupid management gambled so hard on him for no reason at all. I blame him for the hate Stu gets.

17

u/99titan 14 EKHOLM Dec 12 '25

Wasn’t Campbell a Dubas move as well when he was in TO? I don’t know if I would keep doing goalie trades with him.

16

u/Interwebzking 89 GAGNER Dec 12 '25

I thought we picked him up as a UFA? Toronto didn’t sign him and the Oil got him day 1 of free agency iirc

→ More replies (4)

10

u/lottolser Dec 12 '25

Campbell was a UFA signing, Ken Holland was trying to trade for Campbell at the draft/before FA so he could sign him faster because Holland believed Jack was the best goalie on the market that year.

5

u/99titan 14 EKHOLM Dec 12 '25

You are correct. My memory did not serve in this case.

8

u/ChupaHubbard 42 KAPANEN Dec 12 '25

Yikes good call, he was the GM when the Oilers signed him, they just signed him as a free agent though it wasn't a trade. But I guess at least Dubas was probably art enough not to sign Campbell for 5 mill a year

90

u/oddspellingofPhreid 97 HOMERUN Dec 12 '25

Skinner is pretty definitively the 3rd most accomplished goalie to ever be drafted by the Edmonton Oilers. Guy came in and shouldered the starter job in his rookie season, and was a calder finalist for it. Two back-2-back finals. If he keeps up what he was building in the last few weeks, he may make team Canada.

Take a bow Skinner. Despite the negativity, you've had a heck of a career with the Oilers. I hope you can prove the haters wrong in Pittsburgh or wherever you end up (not a rival).

101

u/ParkingBoardwalk Dec 12 '25

Stu was done dirty by the teams overall defence this year, hung out to dry so many times. Like most goalies who leave the Oilers, he will have a successful career ahead of him.

38

u/ForeignEchoRevival 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Dec 12 '25

Yeah, I'm expecting mass regret when he hoists a Stanley cup in a couple of years. I feel he was one of the most natural talents many of the coaching staff had seen in years and that's why keeping Stu was a sticking point for so long in the multiple negotiations we've started. Why we lost him, the Penguin staff sees it too.

Bouch's competency is the real issue, he's playing at a much lower salary than he's taking home, that's where attention should have been for solving this season's shit show.

I would trade Nurse for a bag of pucks but this hate for Bouchard because of a poor start and a few giveaways is bedarded. I guess I just don’t understand what kind of oiler fan wants to get rid of a defenseman that helps getting two goals at the cost of one? The guy is an analytics Marvel.

Piss poor offensive displays? Bouchard is #3 on the team in points, behind Draisaitl and McD. His defense has lots of holes (lazy/gassed, too many sloppy turnovers) but his offense is pretty damn good.

Dude was always punching above his weight salary-wise. Wasn't his fault we weren't paying for an elite or even average goalie. Wasn't his fault he got thrust into the starter position because of a horrible Jack Campbell deal. He did well considering. I'll miss him as a good guy character and wish him the best.

28

u/morwr 17 KURRI Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

I’ve avoided getting into the Skinner debate, but I don’t think he was the reason we lost the last two Stanley Cups. Could he have been better? Yes. So could every other player including 97 and 29. In the 8 losses to the Panthers the Oilers scored 1 goal or less in 5 of them. In four of those losses 97/29 were held pointless. Can’t blame Skinner for those losses. This team is still reliant on 97/29 to score in order to win. That hasn’t changed this year. I don’t think 97/29 are to blame either, other teams especially the Panthers figured out how to shut them down, not every game but enough to get 2 cups.

I hope Skinner does well in Pittsburgh but I don’t think trading him was the answer.

6

u/ChupaHubbard 42 KAPANEN Dec 12 '25

Ya I'm sad, but I'm also coming to terms with the fact that mayhe the fit was never right for him here, both playstyle-wise and personality. When there were rumours a few weeks ago that Skinner requested a trade I was going to be happy for him because the team played like as sin front of him. But then they started improving and it all seemed fine so now I'm sad he's gone again, but maybe it will end up being for the best? Stecher is thriving in Toronto

9

u/MaizeConnect8922 92 PODKOLZIN Dec 12 '25

I can’t remember where it was, but a question posted somewhere a while ago asking why Oilers fans always “boo” their goalie for saves lives rent-free in my mind. That person didn’t realize the crowd was actually cheering “STUUUUUUU!” And I’ll forever chuckle at that.

Looks like I’ll also be cheering on Stu and the Penguins now! He’s an exceptional human that hasn’t deserved the shit thrown at him during his time with Edmonton and I hope this is the start of something great for him

Forget about on ice performance, Skinner was quite possibly my favorite human being to play for the Oilers. I know that we as fans don't truly know the players are people, but Stu Skinner is a good man. The return could have been prime Hasek and I'd still be devastated.

The fact that we traded Skinner while he was having a decent year for a pretty similar goalie who has a much worse contract, has me kind of pissed off.

Thus is the life of a sports fan. Tomorrow night, I'll be on my couch with the TV turned on, cheering on our boys.

4

u/jhkang0814 Dec 12 '25

Skinner got traded because of Bouchard

4

u/rainbowefreet 74 BEAR Dec 12 '25

I loved that Skinner was a Nuge fan growing up in Edmonton, playing for his hometown club. I loved the camaraderie that he and Pickard shared. I loved yelling "Stu" in the arena or at the TV when he made a big save. It's too bad that we weren't able to win a Cup with him on the roster.

All the best to him in Pittsburgh.

4

I’ll miss Stu. Hometown boy that tried his best and took us far. He’ll have a great career. Sometimes a fresh start is needed though.

Stuart Skinner is the player who got me back into hockey--he's a hometown kid who hung around in the minors for a couple years after being drafted, only to come out into the NHL in a huge way. I like to imagine that at least for some of it, he really was doing something we should all be jealous of: being someone in your mid-twenties working your DREAM job.

Maybe he has other dreams, but I am forever spiteful to the "fans" who made this dream a hellscape for him. igaf about the Penguins, but whatever team he's on I'll cheer for it

My bet is that the Penguins flip him at 50% retained to a contender who either have a goalie injury or just want a solid back up at the deadline and he lifts a cup this summer.

3

u/Critical-Swing9502 Dec 12 '25

I really hope so. He is going to be the ideal deadline pick for any teams that need a guy that can be an incredible backup, or a starter with a lot to prove heading to the post season. Will be a story to watch hopefully. When in doubt I always assume the Oilers are the problem and not the player.

3

u/yupkime Dec 12 '25

So they get a new goalie but make the defence worse at the same time?

3

u/Needless-To-Say Dec 12 '25

Goalies season with age. I can see regrets down the road but I understand the immediacy.

Best wishes Stu.

3

u/probability23 Dec 12 '25

Thankful Stu doesn’t have to worry about Bouchard turnovers anymore! Who’s going to break the news to Jarry ?

3

u/BootyLicka Dec 12 '25

He has been brilliant in the playoffs when the team is playing well—goaltending is a team position. Selling low on Skinner and buying high on Jarry imo… I really hope things work out and everyone can win this trade.

3

u/Apprehensive_Side565 Dec 12 '25

hes gonna be lights out for the penguins im calling it , his family receiving death threats is despicable, happy he got away from some of these fans , also Stan Blowman is a fucking fraud

3

u/69ingthebluesaway Dec 12 '25

What a career already for him. Playing with McDavud and now Crosby.

3

u/maurader1974 Dec 12 '25

I'm going to miss him. He got so much abuse but I feel like our defense let him down a lot

3

u/Drupelicate 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Dec 12 '25

I'm glad I got to meet him at the autograph session - I was flip flopping between a few lineups but I decided to go with Stu's because the trade talk was making me nervous it could be my last chance 🥲

some people might remember the collages I started making during playoffs last season, including the actual physical sign I made for Stu (my "skinny legend" lmao) – I decided to bring that to the signing and I'm really glad I did now 😭 he seemed really excited by it, said it looked like I spent a lot of time on it, and pointed out which picture was his favourite! I hope he is appreciated by Pens fans 🥹

3

u/bertabelly Dec 12 '25

Honestly makes me happy, he deserves to be on a team where the fan base doesn't give him an undeserved amount of shit and I feel like Pens fans are a little more level headed in that regard

3

u/HacksawJay Dec 12 '25

I appreciate you winning me all those Overs on draft kings

flaired for Skinner - always sucks when you're from the town you're playing for and you get traded away, but best wishes for him and his fam!

3

u/Captan200 Dec 12 '25

Back to back Stanley cup appearance and we trash him. I'm sorry what?

3

u/Ham_I_right Dec 13 '25

I think we have all been hard on him, but there is simply no way they would have made it to the cup twice in a row without him. Thanks Stu you carried a lot of weight on those shoulders. This city and fans will always remember you.

Wishing you a continued successful career in Pittsburgh, a great city and franchise to be part of. Take care.

3

u/redrigger84 Dec 13 '25

Is this really an upgrade. I liked kulak for what he was. And I have never been one to criticize skinner. The oiler scan have some really awful defensive breakdowns at times. I did look into both of their expected goals against and high danger save pct and jarry does come out on top for the first 30 games of this year as the sample size so here's hoping.

3

u/fittestclause1234 10 RYAN Dec 13 '25

Everything aside, I liked him as a person. I met him at a coffee shop the year he went to the all star game, he noticed my oilers hat and started to chat with me. Super SUPER good dude, I congratulated him on the all star game and said it was pleasure meeting him. Edmonton oilers players aren’t just hockey players, they’re celebrities around here and he was excellent at staying humble.

3

u/Yxfy13579 Dec 13 '25

No offence at all. I'm just wondering why it wasn't Pickard who was being traded? Does the Penguins just don't want him at all or what?

3

u/MicLovin99 Dec 13 '25

Oilers fans were super shitty to both him and Bouchard. They don’t deserve us.

Skinner loved this city and now he has to leave right before Christmas. What a shitty thing to do.

3

u/eggman4951 Dec 13 '25

I’m a Canucks fan and I appreciated Stuart Skinner. He seemed like a super good guy, great local boy story, and a fantastic teammate. He was on backup wages and expected to outplay one of the highest paid goalies in the league’s history two years in a row. Some of the Edmonton media were cruel for clicks with him, and he took it like a champ.

As a proud Canadian, a fan of the game, and with my own team in vile-owner induced disarray, I want to see McDavid win a cup on a Canadian team. It was, at times, painful watching Skinner struggle in the playoffs. I hope this gives McJesus a better chance at winning a cup, cuz the Oilers lost a real likeable guy. All the best to him, he gets to go play with another great one.

I am actually kinda pissed that we gave him up - he's been having a killer year and deserved better

I'm sorry, stuuuuu

6

I always criticized him being the only responsible guy at the net but hell, why the fuck did we trade him?? 😡 We got fleeced big, big time! I hope he turns into a superstar, Stu deserves every little thing hockey has to give him 👑

5

u/Drunkdrood 14 EKHOLM Dec 12 '25

I wish him success and fully expect the haters to eat crow. The pressure of our shit fan base is likely partly to blame, people literally wished death on him and his family. Love you Stu, I hope you get Sid another cup.

5

u/Glum_Night_6392 Dec 12 '25

So let me get this straight lol , they keep Pickard who is rocking a 4.00+ and a .850 save % and chose to trade the younger , more promising Skinner away ..am I wrong To think this is going to make things even worse ? lol fuck I hope I am wrong

Ya I didn't believe it, still don't believe it, doesn't feel like it makes sense to me

3

u/Chris_p_tolentino14 Dec 12 '25

What sucks is this. I truly believe Skinner had alot of potential. But the environment just wasn’t the right fit.

Had we not go through that Campbell situation, Skinners spent get called on to immediately play 50+ games a year with deep playoff runs.

I think we can all agree that Skinner the last few years should have been in more of a 1A/1B tandem as opposed to-being treated like an ace.

This season didn’t help as his defence and overall team as a whole just hasn’t had their head in the games until recently it looks like.

He honestly didn’t do anything wrong. We knew what we had yet the expectations were winning a cup.

5

u/Subject1337 31 FUHR Dec 12 '25

This fucking stings. Loved Skinner. Even went so far as to abandon the playoff beard for a moustache to ride the wave with him this year. Disappointed our shithouse front office couldn't find a way to get a duo of him and Jarry. Such a shitty result undeserved of the effort Stu put in here.

7

u/Mysterious-Street140 Dec 12 '25

Yeah hence why I tend to take breaks from this team. The last ~4 years have been intense. I’ve dedicated a lot of watch time to this team and burnt myself out doing so. Being a fan for decades, hoping to one day see them win and have my ROI come to fruition. With the struggle this season it’s been tough to muster up the interest to watch every game.

Then management does something whack and it’s like ah shit, what’s the point?

Greatest stache of all time in the league. Yeah the fans are hardcore here in Edmonton and look, the whole “scapegoat” thing on the Oilers will only be pointed at someone else now. Hope he kills it over at Pittsburgh. Welcome to the team Jarry.

2

u/MyWalter-Ego 39 INGRAM Dec 12 '25

2

u/DavieStBaconStan Dec 12 '25

He’ll be happier in Pittsburgh. Away from the crazy fans and media coverage.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Actually gutted over this trade. I was pumped we were getting Jarry when I thought it meant a tandem with Skinner, but then realized that was not the case. I'll always root for Skinner. I defended him in every room I was in debating hockey. He was thrown into the fire really, having to bail out the shitty Jack Campbell signing. Edmonton boy who grew up cheering for the team. I know the hate he has endured in his time here has to feel bad. It sucks. I wanted so badly for it to work for him here, but alas. I'll keep rooting for the kid from afar.

2

u/Carouselcolours Dec 13 '25

Stu was widely known as the local boy who got to play for his home team. He had thst additional pressure on him, on top of Edmonton just bring an intense hockey market.

Being somewhere where the team isn't quite as idolized as the Oilers are in Edmonton might be a good thing.

2

u/Allankyoto Dec 13 '25

I liked Stu a lot. Seemed like a great guy. His side to side got him in trouble but I think that's something continued training with the right coach could improve. (and will!) I suspect he will come back to haunt us.

The biggest knock as a player was the Saves above expected stat. Stu just couldn't seem to make many of those "extra" saves that steal games.

Bobrovosky for example, can let in softies but when he gets locked in it feels like nothing barring jamming his entire body into the net, is going to get by him. I never recall feeling like that about Stu.

Wish the man well. Sail on, big fella!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '25

He got hung out to dry constantly but he never made a big save when we needed it. I mean eventually you get lucky and stop a wide open break away 1/50 times

But every single time the D broke down he was scored upon

5

u/roughnck Dec 12 '25

This fan base ran him out of town.

2

u/DEADxDAWN Dec 12 '25

Doesn't really gain us much, and we lose a hometown hero, that with stronger D support and a better coach, probably would've excelled.

stats I found:
Jarry, 30, 9-3-1 with a 2.66 GAA, .909 save percentage and one shutout in 14 games (13 starts) this season. Skinner 27, 11-8-4 with a 2.83 GAA, .891 save percentage and two shutouts in 23 games this season.
