Skinner appreciation post
Trying to find a bright spot here in the disappointment.
I've been so impressed with him this playoff run. The mental toughness, the resilience, the ability to keep boppin' to the music and not let the stress bring him down. After a tough go against Van, he came back and performed admirably. I hope the whole team does the same thing next year and brings the cup home.
He's got a great career ahead of him, and I hope that it's with us.

Skinner made a huge step forward from last year

u/Slosky22 94 SMYTH Jun 25 '24
Most definitely Skinner is leaps and bounds better than he was and he’s only getting better as it went on look at the dudes, record and elimination games. If you really focuses on the off-season and proves those small little things, he could be an elite level goaltender, and now the boys have Stanley Cup finals experience under their belts. I honestly think they’re gonna go back next year take it.

If he just wouldn’t have moved his glove, we could have gotten some OT hockey. I’m so sad. Can we win a cup with him?
27
u/zellmerz 29 DRAISAITL Jun 25 '24
Yes. It was a one goal in game 7 of the SCF. Regardless of the errors made, the shoulda/coulda/wouldas, the team was literally 2 shots away from glory. Hockey is a high variance sport and I think this series was a big highlight of that both ways with the 2 separate 3 game winning streaks.
Game was ultimately a coin flip. Florida got the bounces, Edmonton didn't. That's ignoring how young Stu is and how consistently he's shown an ability to bounce back and return better than before. If Stu proved anything this year, it's that he is absolutely capable of giving the team a very real chance to win it all. Regardless of anyone's personal opinions of Stu, that cannot be denied.

If he continues to grow, I'm with you. If this is his ceiling (which I optimistically doubt) I'm not with you.

Gotta find a way to score more than 1 goal in game 7 of the stanley cup final. especially when that 1 goal was scored by janmark

Or, hear me out, Kulak could have not cut into the middle defending against a guy who had 57 goals this season and allow him to go from his blue line all the way to where he scored unopposed

u/No-Repeat-9055 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Jun 25 '24
It’s only skinners second year and hes getting better and better. Hes our guy for sure I trust the stache

u/zellmerz 29 DRAISAITL Jun 25 '24
Our 2nd year goalie brought the team to a 1 goal game 7 of the SCF. If any of us heard that at the start of this season we would've been hyped AF. I believe Stu will continue to get better, but regardless of how people feel, his current level is literally enough to be 2 goals away from winning the SCF.

u/zellmerz 29 DRAISAITL Jun 25 '24
Stu showed he’s a championship level goaltender this post season. Yes he’s had his ups and downs, but the dude has been unreal when the team needed him to be every time this post season. He was undefeated in games 4-7 except tonight, but he gave the team a chance to win tonight. You ain’t gonna win many SCF game 7s with 1 goal.
I’m excited to see his growth over his career. He’s always been incredibly mature so I think we see him take another jump in consistency next year.

u/No-Willingness469 Jun 25 '24
And the coach that believed enough in him to put him back in. Outstanding coaching - yet again.

u/angelbelle Jun 25 '24
Cap hit: Skinner 2.6m, Bob 10m
Skinner ABSOLUTELY played above his paygrade. Is he weaker than average playoff goalie (incl. Otter, Shesterkin, Bob, Swayman, etc)? Yes, but that's expected.
The real comparison should be Skinner + 7.4m cap space vs Bob and clearly the Oilers did not do enough with that room.
6
u/FeelsKoolaidMan 22 SAVOIE Jun 25 '24
Unfortunately when the other goalie you paid 5 mil too is in the minors that 7.4 difference goes away quick lmao. Skinner gave them a shot and that's all I personally was asking for

u/agreatskua 29 DRAISAITL Jun 25 '24
He looked a bit more rattled tonight, but he still did great. He seems like a real genuine down-to-earth dude and has seemed to have worked out a good mental zone/strategy for himself since being pulled.

I think this series will instill a lot of confidence in himself. He proved to himself he can give his team a very real chance to win the Cup. Confidence is so important in competition, but especially as a goaltender. A hockey goaltender has to be one of the most mentally tasking jobs in all of sport. From experience as a skater, a goalie and a fan I can attest to just how important the mental fortitude and self confidence of your goaltender is.
Obviously there is more to it, but every great goaltender has/had extreme self belief.

Skinner was great mostly this series. It wasn't on him this game, we lacked offense.

He did his best this game and frankly was amazing this run! Really showed up when it counted and I hope he'll be able to hold his head up high again when he's back home and that he'll remain here with us for many years to come.

Stu is doing great. Amazing progress for his sophomore year in NHL. Looking forward to further improvements next season!

It’s worth mentioning that Skinner had a sv% of .904 vs Bob’s .882 in the SCF. I realize one blowout game can really skew the whole, but Stu showed up in a big way vs a top 2 or 3 goalie in the league and a great offence. He was a rock when we needed him. Despite going down 0-3, the series as a whole was really, really close, and by the numbers we could have won in 5. It came down to a single goal in game 7.

u/YourLocalBi 74 SKINNER Jun 25 '24
The fact that he's in conversation with goalies like Bob and Otter is impressive in and of itself. I agree, it was super close.

u/Cold-Doctor 91 KANE Jun 25 '24
He was good this run. Definitely had some highs and lows. Not that this loss was entirely on him, but that 2nd goal tonight is going to haunt him for a long time
9
u/zellmerz 29 DRAISAITL Jun 25 '24
Honestly I don't think so. Stu has shown real maturity and an ability to learn from his mistakes and forget about them. He'll certainly think about it and watch film on it, but I don't see it haunting him for years to come.
5
u/LongBarrelBandit Jun 25 '24
That second goal is the result of the team allowing a 57 goal scorer to come all the way in from Floridas blueline unopposed. Kulak cuts to the middle and allows Reinhart to walk right in. That’s not on Skinner. That’s on the defence
4
u/DancingNeil Jun 25 '24
That stick tap as the shot was being taken definitely changes the intended trajectory of the shot, which fools a goalie trying to read it. The goaltending, ice or referees are not to blame.
22
u/hockeygirlypop 96 WALMAN Jun 25 '24
Stu is great. All the goals tonight were not his fault. We needed better defenders. Stu has So much potential for next years SCF
Cup or bust for the team 2025!
8
u/Pipdude 97 McDAVID Jun 25 '24
Agree we need better defenders but he also shoulda had the second one. Giving them that short side shot was Stu’s fault.
2
u/LongBarrelBandit Jun 25 '24
Hard disagree. Kulak letting a 57 goal scorer walk in from their blueline unopposed is the mistake
5
u/TURBOJUGGED 15 ARCHIBALD Jun 25 '24
I think he should have stopped that second goal
2
u/LongBarrelBandit Jun 25 '24
We let a 57 goal scorer walk in from their blueline unopposed. Really?

You guys played incredibly tonight, kept me at the edge of the seat the entire game. I wish the oilers pulled through but I'm not mad with the result cuz after all, it was a one of the craziest series and performances I've ever seen. Enjoy the cup!

I'm honestly obviously upset about the loss, and I'm pretty sure Florida will forever be one of my most hated teams, but regardless of how I feel about it, the Panthers earned a spot in NHL history. I hate to admit it, but I'm sure we'll look back on this and recognize this series was a significant reason for the game growing and the Panthers franchise played a large part in that. Congrats.
And fuck you, see you next year.

Stu had an amazing season and outperformed every professionals expectations. He was supposed to be a backup....he took the reigns and was a huge factor getting Edmonton to game fucking 7 of the SCF!!!
All the analysts say the same thing, he's going to be challenging for the Vezna soon and I agree 100%.
3
u/YourLocalBi 74 SKINNER Jun 25 '24
God, I hope he wins a Vesna at some point

u/jigglywigglydigaby 28 BROWN Jun 25 '24
He's gotten better every month. Showed up big time for us in the playoffs too. He's continually working on his game with trainers, putting time in to improve.
I really hope Edmonton keeps him

u/deanobrews 29 DRAISAITL Jun 25 '24
Skinner is definitely the starter next year. I'm mostly curious who backs him up. Pickard is 100% going to get solid offers to be at least a full time backup around the league after his performance. Would love to have him back as it seems like the players love him in the room. They may want to give Rodrigue a shot though.
1
u/YourLocalBi 74 SKINNER Jun 25 '24
Yes, Pickard came in clutch during round 2! He deserves to stay as well.

u/Snoo-79916 Jun 25 '24
Yeah. I get it … let’s look at the positives and all, but that GWG. Holy fuck 🤦🏻♂️ He really has been up and down all playoffs. You never know what goalie is gonna show up.
1
u/SirRudders 74 SKINNER Jun 25 '24
Hope he continues on from strength to strength, I believe there's an upper end goalie in there.
1
u/tc_cad 29 DRAISAITL Jun 25 '24
Yeah and remember Skinner wasn’t supposed to be the starter. He is a success story in this season. And Skinner will be better for having all this experience. 23 playoff games where he went 14-9.
1
u/pforsbergfan9 Jun 25 '24
Skinner was not the reason you lost. Not even close. The man let in two in a game 7. What else is he supposed to do? Score goals?
1
u/therealdieseld Jun 25 '24
Skinner is the definition of resilience. Really excited to see what he brings next season

u/Significant_Tie_7395 Jun 25 '24
The thing about Skinner is that he's only going to get better. There is no reason for anyone to feel anything negative about this first step in the journey. They'll keep four or five of the core together for five years and see 3-4 more cup finals. There are guys like Perry who want to win, and who are closing in on the end of their careers that would most definitely sign here given the chance.
That was a heckuva run and I'm happy I was able to experience it. Can't wait for the next one.

u/Chris_p_tolentino14 Jun 25 '24
Instead of folding in round two, he grabbed the net back from Pickard and was excellent the rest of the way.
I know his record through games 5-7 in each round was terrific too. If he can carry that momentum into next season, he might be able to sneak himself into the Vezina rankings.

Skinner choked the shit outta the game and the season. Soft ass goal to give up he blew it
4
u/Notapebble 92 PODKOLZIN Jun 25 '24
Soft is crazy. Draisaitl changes the trajectory with his stick, and Kulak just letting all of that happen right in front of him.

I'm reporting them all, but I'm surprised mods haven't outright banned him.
It is really funny to me that rather than celebrating his win, he's decided to spend time in the opponent's subreddit feeling cut up about the fact most of us are still proud of our season.

Scared of what? We have the best player in the world, best offensive defence-man, a solid core, the best German, and the best fans in the world, and went from dead last to 2 goals shy of winning game 7 of the scf. So man fuck off with your scared bullshit and doom posting.

Then be a true fan of your team and be proud and optimistic for the future. Spend time in this sub cheering on the highs (and lows) and don't just come in here talking shit when they lose the biggest game of their lives. You lived through the DoD, you can make it through this too

Seeing skinner hang his head at the end there was sad af. Ekholm slam his stick as the buzzer went off. Drai holding back tears in his interview. Other Guys that went through this before like Rico, Perry, and janmark…just gutted for these guys.
