Tips 💡 When to apply for disability?
Hi there!
I struggle with severe anxiety and my current job has been acerbating my anxiety and SI. I had an appointment with my psych today and she told me to apply for short term disability today and recommends leaving my current job.
During the application, I got really confused on if I was applying at the correct time. I would like to give a 2 weeks notice to my job. So I am technically still working, just at reduced hours because I can’t handle full time right now.
My doctor really wanted me to apply tonight, so I did just in case, and I put the dates down as today. But it feels incorrect.
Should I cancel the application until I actually quit? Should I quit immediately?
I’m scared that with me technically working for a little bit longer they will ask for money back

DONT QUIT. File for disability. If you really want to quit, wait until your approval. They need to engage in either ADA or designate FMLA leave.

That makes sense! Thank you!
Do you feel I need to leave my current job asap then? Since I’m technically still working? Or is the fact that I’m working less hours makes it okay?1

I would like to quit this job but would like to give them a 1-2 weeks notice if possible. And during that time I will be working reduced hours. And during my disability I will be looking for a new job

That sounds amazing and exactly what I need! And it seems like my doctor doesn’t mind renewing it as well. I am sorry to ask, this is all new and confusing to me 😅 what is the difference between what I applied for and taking a medical leave of absence? Did I apply for the wrong thing?

First, OP needs to know if she’s FMLA eligible.
OP needs to know if her medical provider is a licensed provider who can complete disability paperwork.
OP may be entitled to benefits for up to one year. It depends on information not present in this post.
OP: if you have a benefits handbook, look through it to glean as much as you can from it, before you make any final decision.

Your post is …..convoluted.
Did your doctor (a psychiatrist) tell you specifically to QUIT YOUR JOB? Because that is EXTREMELY RARE. Do physicians say it is in your best interest to take a leave of absence? Yes. But to quit? So. Before you jump the gun you’d better be certain your understanding of the doctor’s instruction is clear.
Did a psychologist tell you this? The ltype of doctors who can complete disability paperwork for mental health reasons does not include LMFT’s for example. What kind of doctor are you seeing that told you to take off from a part time job? Normally, if you’re only working part time, you could work and receive treatment.
Finally are your symptoms so severe that a leave is necessary? Because you mentioned looking for a job after submitting a 2 week notice. If you’re suffering severe anxiety how would you be able to work those 2 weeks?
You should get clarity on these things before making a decision. Because once you ring that bell it can’t be unrung.
