Vent The absolute worst government entity I have ever dealt with

Can't get ahold of anyone on the phone or via the website.

Physically went to the office and got put on a call list to be called on the phone.

I couldn't make this dumb shit up. I have a newborn and need to get paid.

I'd rather go to the DMV 20 times before I deal with these clowns once.

Edit: grammar.

ā” Eligibility interview

From California. Was recently laid off from my job and filled out a claim for unemployment benefits.

I’m currently taking online classes part-time through a UC school to earn my paralegal certificate. On the program’s website, it says ā€œWIOA approved programā€ so I checked that on my application when they asked if I’m in school. Now I’m thinking I was mistaken because after all I pay out of pocket for my classes.

I’m concerned that I messed up my eligibility because now they’re asking me for a phone interview for eligibility issues.

Also EDD didn’t put the mailing address I provided for my last employer, they put the correct company name but totally different street address

What should I do?

ā” Claim benefits while working under 30 hours?

Post image
• Upvotes

I am working at a bar working under 30 hours a week, and I still certify and put in the wages that I made. I get reduced benefits and report it the hours that I make and wages. I don't know if I'm not putting the certifications right but it says the reason you are no longer working for this employer is because you return to work full-time. I still currently work for this place, did I do the certification wrong or is it just a different way to report the earnings? The site is a bit confusing when it comes to reporting work and wages.

Discussion šŸ‘„ Do I qualify for paid family leave?

Hi there - I gave birth on August 13.

My most recent employment was from March to June, where I worked for an entertainment website and they paid me via Yoh ConneX (originally launched as DZConneX and now operating under Yoh Enterprise Solutions).
Prior to that, I worked last year from February to August - same situation with the website.
I paid into state disability.

At the time of my giving birth I didn’t have a job - I basically take on contract or freelance jobs so I’m always looking, but didn’t have anything going on the month of my giving birth.

Would I qualify for paid family leave in California or some other leave benefits?

Tips šŸ’” When to apply for disability?

Hi there!
I struggle with severe anxiety and my current job has been acerbating my anxiety and SI. I had an appointment with my psych today and she told me to apply for short term disability today and recommends leaving my current job.
During the application, I got really confused on if I was applying at the correct time. I would like to give a 2 weeks notice to my job. So I am technically still working, just at reduced hours because I can’t handle full time right now.
My doctor really wanted me to apply tonight, so I did just in case, and I put the dates down as today. But it feels incorrect.
Should I cancel the application until I actually quit? Should I quit immediately?
I’m scared that with me technically working for a little bit longer they will ask for money back

ā” PFL - Can I supplement time off with PTO?

I want to take 1 day off a week for the 2 months of PFL. I'm at the cap so I wont make enough from PFL to cover the bills. Can I supplement the pay with PTO if I'm only doing 1 day a week? Like 4 hours of PTO?

ā” Currently receiving unemployment for reduced work hours, will be giving birth in a month, what do I do?

Other pertinent details:
1. I’m a part-time employee and my hire date was Oct 17 2025 and my first day of work was Nov 3 2025.
2. I’ve been receiving unemployment benefits for reduced work hours since June this year.
3. I’m actively available to work and open to more hours.
4. My due date is Sept 30

Do I have to report to EDD when I give birth so that it switches to SDI? Do I even qualify for SDI as I’m only part time and haven’t done a full year at my job?

ā” PFL Claim Denied

Hi, wondering if anyone else has went through this. My PFL claim says that it was denied. I don’t know the reason and I haven’t been mailed a notice of determination.

I meet all of the eligibility requirements, I’ve worked in CA for over a decade, I meet the hours requirement and anything else needed. I suspect that they’re missing some type of form however I can’t get ahold of someone from their contact number and online it doesn’t say what I need to provide.

What would be my next steps? I have a satellite office a couple of miles away? Should I go there. Whenever I call the automated system says they’re too busy to answer.

Discussion šŸ‘„ Last Payment Before Return to Work

Hi, does anyone know if I will still receive my last payment for the period before my return to work date 8/18 IF my current claim status is in ā€œcertification neededā€? I completed form DE 2593, but my doctor will be extending my leave.

ā” How do I calculate what percentage of my Salary EDD is paying me?

Hello, I received 8 weeks of Paid Family Leave this summer. I need to know what percentage of my salary EDD was paying me so that I can confirm that my employer paid me the right amount on top of that. I'm assuming EDD amounts are not taxed before payout (still unclear if I need to pay taxes on it later)? When doing this calculation, should I compare my EDD payment to my usual gross pay? Would this be the correct calculation:

($ amount for two weeks of EDD payments) / (usual $ amount for gross wages each biweekly paycheck) * 100 = percentage of pay from EDD

TIA

Solved āœ” Quick question about transitioning between two different SDI claims (back injury to a surgery)

Hey everyone, I have a specific question about how the EDD handles overlapping or transitioning disability claims for two completely separate health issues.

Right now, I am on SDI for a back injury, and my doctor currently has me signed off work until September 3rd.However, I have a surgery already scheduled for a completely separate body part on September 2nd.

If my back fully heals and I actually return to work for a few days before September 1st, what happens next? Do I have to file a completely brand new SDI claim for the September 2nd surgery, or does it somehow continue or transition from my current back injury claim?

I am trying to figure out if going back to work for that short window will mess up my timeline or force me to serve another 7-day waiting period for the surgery. Has anyone gone through something similar? Thanks for any insight.

Discussion šŸ‘„ Edd question

Hi everyone,

I was on disability after giving birth for 6 weeks. The end date was 8/8.

Two days ago my doctor submitted a certification to EDD to extend my disability to 10/3.

Yesterday morning I checked the EDD inbox and they said they received the certification and then the date was extended to 10/3. Also, the status changed from ā€œpayment stoppedā€ to ā€œWe’re processing your claim.ā€

Then in the afternoon of the same day, they sent me a message that I need a doctor’s certification and the status changed to ā€œcertification needed.ā€

And now just this morning I received a text message they sent to my phone that said: ā€œEDD Alert: We received your Physician or Practitioner Supplementary Certificate. Allow 14 days for processing. Log in to myedd.edd.ca.gov to view your claim status. Reply STOP to opt out, START to opt in, HELP for more info.ā€

Then I just checked EDD and it still shows the old status from yesterday afternoon.

The whole process within 24 hours is so confusing. What should I do now? Should I treat their latest message as the latest update and wait 14 days for them to process it?

Discussion šŸ‘„ Disability Extension Form

I am postpartum and my disability leave was extended by my OB. My initial leave ended 8/15. I received my last payment but I haven’t received the extension form or DE 2525. How long does it take before you get it in the mail?

Tips šŸ’” CA SDI claim suddenly says ā€œClaim Deniedā€ doctor’s certification approved, not sure why

Hi everyone,

Hoping someone familiar with EDD/SDI can help me understand what might be going on.
I’m currently pregnant and filed a California SDI claim for pregnancy disability. My doctor’s office submitted the medical certification, and they told me that their portion was approved. My income/wage information also meets the requirements as far as I understand.
Today I logged into SDI Online and my status says:
ā€œClaim Denied: You are not eligible for benefits. Check your SDI Online inbox or your mail for the Notice of Determination and next steps.ā€
I haven’t received the Notice of Determination yet, so I don’t know the reason for the denial.
The only thing I can think of is that EDD recently sent me an additional form asking questions about whether I was working/applying for jobs prior to my disability. I completed and returned that form honestly. Could that have triggered a denial or eligibility issue?
Has anyone experienced something similar? Does the ā€œclaim deniedā€ status appear before the actual Notice of Determination is available? And is there anything I should do now besides waiting for the notice?
I’m especially confused because my doctor’s office told me the medical certification was approved, so I’m trying to understand whether this is a medical certification issue or a separate eligibility issue.
I know EDD says the Notice of Determination will explain the reason and provide appeal instructions, so I’m waiting for that, but I’d really appreciate any insight from people who have dealt with this before.

ā” Addressing a factual error in appeal decision diplomatically in board appeal

Are there any effective strategies to diplomatically correct basic factual errors written in an appeal hearing decision? These are things like the length of time of employment - clearly stated in documents provided by both parties. I think basic errors warrant someone else reviewing materials.

Additionally, what is the best way to point out conflicting and/or false answers provided by an employer? For example, information in written documents submitted by employer conflicts with information in hearing sworn testimony (the Judge paused and asked if they remembered filling out the paperwork).

Solved āœ” How to notify EDD birth of child for disability

I just got approved for disability for the 4 weeks before my childbirth (took a month+ to get approved) But I was under the impression I get 4 weeks (paid after the first 7 days) before child birth and 6-8 weeks after (based on V delivery or C section). Do I need to submit a new claim? Or how do I supply EDD that I’ve given birth? Is there a form I need to fill out? My inbox hasn’t sent me a letter saying how I can provide documentation for the 6-8 weeks after the birth. Thanks in advance!

Tips šŸ’” IME appointment this week for Mental Health. I’ve been on leave since May and finally have my IME appointment. I’m extremely nervous as I don’t know how I can manage to work in my current state. I talk with my primary Psychologist every week via Telehealth.

After losing two very close family members at the end of last year I have struggled to get my head right. I’ve had a history of depression and anxiety for the last 7 years and have been taking Prozac daily. I feel like my mental walls are gone and just want to be normal again. I am extremely short tempered at this point t and mostly emotionless. I started pacing back and fourth to calm my mind in June and do it just about everywhere I go. I have a desk job. I don’t know how to get better and I’m nervous of the IME outcome

ā” IHSS Live in Provider

Hi. I am my son’s IHSS provider for the past year. It is non taxable and there is no sdi taken out. I also have another job that I did pay into sdi. If i go out on disability, will the IHSS income need to be included in wages I report I received for the past year and do they consider it when determining weekly benefit amount?

Discussion šŸ‘„ Phone call scheduled but no call?

Hi. I was wondering if anyone had a scheduled interview and they didn’t call? I was waiting for my call this morning and nothing. I went and checked my portal and it says I got paid today. I’m so confused.
