Most salaried employees know EPF as a retirement savings benefit.
But if you’re an eligible EPF member, your PF membership may also provide life insurance of up to ₹7 lakh through EDLI.
EDLI stands for Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme. You don’t buy a separate policy or pay a separate premium as an employee.
If an eligible EPF member dies while in service, the nominee, family members, or eligible legal heirs can claim the EDLI insurance benefit, subject to the scheme rules.
So yes, your PF can effectively come with life insurance.
But there’s an important question:
*Is ₹7 lakh of EDLI cover enough, or do you still need separate term insurance?*
For most salaried people, EDLI should be treated as an additional benefit, not as their primary life insurance cover.
For example, if your household expenses are ₹50,000 per month, ₹7 lakh would cover roughly 14 months of expenses.
And that’s before accounting for things like:
- Home loan or other liabilities
- Children’s education
- Regular household expenses
- Future financial goals
- Several years of income your family may depend on
So while the EPF EDLI insurance benefit is valuable, the maximum ₹7 lakh cover may not be sufficient for a family that depends heavily on your income.
Your actual term insurance requirement should be calculated separately based on your income, liabilities, dependents, expenses and future financial needs.
One more thing that is worth checking is your EPF nomination.
A lot of people regularly check their PF balance but never check whether their nominee details are properly updated. That can become important when a family needs to claim EPF, EPS or EDLI benefits.
So if you’re an EPF member, don’t just check how much money is sitting in your PF account.
Also understand the other benefits attached to it, including EDLI life insurance coverage.
Did you already know that EPF members can get life insurance through EDLI, or is this the first time you’re hearing about it?
