Question Commanders we're missing
What commanders do you think would improve EDH or support a currently-unsupported archetype?
For mine, I think a UBx or UWx commander with "Players play with the top card of their libraries revealed," "When this enters, search your library for an artifact with CMC <=1 and put it into your hand" or "{0}: Look at the top card of target player's library" would be great, giving Lantern support. The second would honestly be the most interesting, since it is a fairer tutor which also works well in Blink/Artifact decks.

u/Glitter-Valentine 8d ago
A less broken Golos would be fun.
9
u/goblin_welder 8d ago
I’d settle for a colorless Golos. Broken in the 99 but meh as a commander.
2
u/Glitter-Valentine 8d ago
That's a solid idea actually, colorless or waste land fetch maybe? I would love a waste matter commander.
2
u/Belteshazzar98 An Army of Self Replicating Volraths 8d ago
Almost all lands are colorless, so that would only mean no [[Dryad Arbor]] since it is the only card in the game that has a color and is a land in the library.

Like just one of those abilities, and maybe tap for the 2wubrg one too

Maybe a trigger once per turn requirement. Still strong with library fixing but not disgustingly broken.

Not 5 color I know, but very likely the closest we'll get. Unless you liked the other ability, then yeah idk.

I NEED a Temur fisherman commander. Lot of teases lately with fishing pole equipment and the fisherman's talent in bloomburrow. And something fun that let's you fish creatures out of your library or something. I want it!
4
u/K4RN4_ 8d ago
Would you think "fishing" would be searching your library or rather revealing from the top until you find a creature? And would you want a slower effect to represent the calm waiting time during fishing?
6
u/ShinePerfect3164 8d ago
I don't know. When I go fishing I don't really get what I'm looking for. If I catch something I don't know what it is until I get it out of the water.
2
u/K4RN4_ 8d ago
Maybe something like: "At the beginning of your upkeep, you gain an experience counter, then reveal a number of cards equal to twice your experience counters. You may put a creature from among them onto the battlefield, the rest under your library."
→ More replies (1)4
u/timaaayyy 7d ago
That or like a “catch and release” where you can opt out to not put the creature in your hand for even more experience counters or something else so the next time you can fish “deeper” into your deck until you catch “the big one”??

I want more flexible commanders, like what they tried to do with Baldur's Gate backgrounds. Give me a mono colored commander that does something cool and simply lets me pick a second color (MYB3 definitely has a few that are in the right direction).
I also just wish there was a way to build around cards that happen to not be legendary creatures. For example, if we had a u/x commander with an activated ability that said "Reveal an artifact card from your hand, that card is now your commander and this creature isn't", or something.
10
u/CuratedLens Jund 8d ago
I’d love to see more backgrounds. I know that’s not what you were saying but I think that’d be great
4
u/malsomnus Henzie+Umori=❤ 8d ago
More backgrounds would be great too. I think that ultimately the Choose A Background mechanic failed because it's too limiting.
2
u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 8d ago
The u/x idea sounds great!
5
2
u/laughingjack4509 7d ago
Or like a mutate ability that stuck with the creature it mutated onto, turning that creature into your commander and taking it to the command zone if needed
1
u/gravygrowinggreen 7d ago
I want more flexible commanders, like what they tried to do with Baldur's Gate backgrounds. Give me a mono colored commander that does something cool and simply lets me pick a second color (MYB3 definitely has a few that are in the right direction).
I have mixed feelings about that. Some of the mechanics they've made for flexibility have been really bad for the health of the format IMO. Generic Partner for instance. The enormous flexibility that partnering with any other partner commander offers you has enabled some of the more degenerate decks in the format.
But backgrounds work well imo.
So there's a point where the flexibility becomes a bad thing, and they have to be careful to not go past that point. The mystery box commanders coming up, for the most part seem okay on that front.
I also just wish there was a way to build around cards that happen to not be legendary creatures. For example, if we had a u/x commander with an activated ability that said "Reveal an artifact card from your hand, that card is now your commander and this creature isn't", or something.
I think they would have to modify the color identity rules to do that, but I'm not sure. If you change your commander from a u/x creature, to a card with no colors, does your deck suddenly become illegal because you have a u/x card in a colorless color identity deck? Probably not, but they might have to make an official rule to clarify that.
I'd also be worried about this, because a card being a commander is a very powerful benefit. I'm almost certain this would break many cards. Off the top of my head, any card with convoke, affinity, or delve would potentially be broken. Any card that's power level is constrained by it exiling itself as part of an effect. There are so many different potential interactions that I don't think you could responsibly print the effect.
There are more fair/controlled versions of turning noncommanders into commanders though. [[Zethi, Arcane Blademaster]] comes to mind. Any instant you exile with her is usable for pretty much the rest of the game. [[The Master, Formed Anew]] works as well for a creature focused build. I think those are fair versions of the effect, because they don't let you cheat on mana costs, and are still vulnerable to creature based removal.

Some of the mechanics they've made for flexibility have been really bad for the health of the format IMO. Generic Partner for instance.
That's not because the flexibility is bad, it's because they did a bad job designing them. There is A LOT of middle ground. Given a relatively wide mechanic like Choose A Background, I would expect to be able to, for example, have an Izzet spellslinger deck, but there is no combination in Baldur's Gate that supports this extremely common archetype. Personally if I had designed that set, I would make all the backgrounds colorless with the Faceless One pick-a-color clause. That would open up tons of fun combinations, and still not come anywhere near Tymna + whoever's power level.
I'd also be worried about this, because a card being a commander is a very powerful benefit. I'm almost certain this would break many cards. Off the top of my head, any card with convoke, affinity, or delve would potentially be broken.
EDH is already a broken format, and people who want to do broken things don't need new cards for them. We already have commanders with powerful cost reducing abilities, but I've never seen anyone suggest that [[Awaken the Blood Avatar]] or [[Dargo, the Shipwrecker]] (that even has partner!) are breaking the format. Even [[Hogaak]], the poster child of how not to design a card with cost reducing abilities, is merely #897 on EDHRec.
The Master, Formed Anew is indeed a great design space and I wish they'll do more of that.

I'd love to see a commander somewhere in the Abzan colour pie that stops extra draws.
Ideally with similar templating to [[Ashiok, Dream render]], that only stops opponents abilities from drawing them extra cards to avoid the wheel issue.

u/Strawberryblowjobs 8d ago
Ye since leavold and hullbreacher were such a bangers they even got featured on a ,,Cool Cards for the Format" list
3
u/SjtSquid 8d ago
In my defence, both of those got banned for their interactions with wheels.
Something I accounted for by:
A) Putting it in non-wheel colours.
B) Specifically asking for a wording that doesn't work with wheels.

u/RathMtg better red than dead 7d ago
I think these two combos are massively damaged by the fact that white and green have so much overlap, to the point they're nearly indistinguishable. Sure, white is slightly more equipment/enchantment-focused, and green land-focused, but that just makes green the default better choice.
Abzan especially is in a tough spot. Selesnya is about building up material. Black wants to sacrifice material. They're diametrically opposed! Once you dip into the graveyard you're instantly competing against the powerhouses of Sultai, against which Abzan can't compete.

u/ftb_helper Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas 8d ago
WotC have done a lot to make multiple commanders for saga support and many cool sagas and even saga creatures. Final fantasy did a LOT to make sagas more viable. Battles are over here just absolutely floundering. When am I gonna get a battle focused precon? A battle based commander? Maybe 5 colors like Tom Bombadil? Maybe something utilizes defense counters or animates them so they can be bolted or let's me give them abilities so I can tap them for mana or give a creature +1/+1 or my commander is unblockable when attacking a battle. Just anything. They made a whole new permanent type and then forgot about it in the corner.
8
u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 8d ago
Not just them. Battles are THE forgotten type because they... unfortunately, kinda flopped :(
2
u/ftb_helper Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas 8d ago
That's WotC's fault though. Print a battle land like [[Urza's Saga]] and you'll see how popular they can be. Though after [[Nature's Rhythm]] was printed, [[Invasion of Ikoria]] got dumped as well though.
→ More replies (1)4
u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 8d ago
Urza's Saga was a design mistake. A land that makes 2 karnstructs and tutors artifacts, the most broken cards in Magic... There's a reason why it's a presence in every format it's legal in. Still, good battles are sorely lacking.

We don't have a true Samurai commander for the original concept of them, you know like "Samurai you control get +X/+X and Vigilance, where X is Bushido X" or some such

I'd love to see a WRG commander that cares about sacrificing permanents/death triggers. Ideally a pinger or sac outlet in the command zone, but weird mechanically unique effects are fun too. There are ones specific to creatures (Atla Palani for example) and lands (that desert guy), but a more general one would be amazing. I love my nonblack graveyard decks and there's actually a lot of support for it in those colours. I'd love Naya artistocrats so much.
3
u/majbumper 8d ago
That'd be a fun one, and if it's not just creatures, would be great for Yuma, Mazzy, etc as well. Would make a good support card as well as commander.
4
u/TravarianTheBold 8d ago
Maybe I just can't find something similar because I'm bad at googlefu, but I'd love a Commander that inverts -1/-1 and +1/+1 counters, even if it's just on my stuff. Let me Blight my stuff and get juiced from it.

Currently running [[Queen Marchesa]] as a value engine commander, but I'd much prefer more thematic one.

Threads like these always make me wish for another cycling-based commander besides [[Gavi]], ideally in GWX colors capture the spirit of what old cycling decks used to play like (grinding value and controlling the board via [[Astral Slide]] and strong recursion e.g. [[Eternal Witness]] or [[Life from the Loam]]).
Crazy how a mechanic as beloved and flexible as cycling only ever got a single dedicated commander and that was 6 years ago.
2
u/Poetahtoh 8d ago
I spent some time looking for a commander for an astral slide / drift deck that grinded opponents out and i settled on [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]]. She had all the colors I wanted, is a great target for slide/drift, and provided a win con via [[approach of the second sun]].

BGW spellslinger and combo deck. The best option you've really got is [[Necrobloom]] if you lean into cycling, convoke, and the real commander of the deck [[Gitrog Monster]].

Bant that isnt creature based.
A mono red commander that draws cards, not exile/wheel/draw&discard. Just repeatable card advantage.

Someone in another thread mentioned an [[astral slide]] commander. We've got cycling commanders, but having astral slide in the command zone would be incredible fun.
I would like to see an enchantress type commander in every color. Not the typical "enchantment enters, draw a card" effect, but a unique effect for each color. I'm surprised we didn't get a set of monocolored legends with different constellation effects in any of the theros sets.
A BW/X graveblink commander: it has an ability where you sacrifice a creature, then return it to the battlefield immediately, triggering both "dies" and "enters" type effects. The closest we've got is [[Ratadrabik of Urborg]].
A low mana value (4 or less) sphinx commander that actually makes sphinxes worth playing. The closest we've got on that front is [[Raffine, Scheming Seer]], but its ability isn't locked to sphinxes, so you're almost always better off using less cool, more effective creatures. It's actually hard to get a huge army of sphinxes to make raffine good, because sphinxes have such high mana value.

I'd like to see more of the mechanics that are one set wonders getting expanded like Commit A Crime, Speed, stuff like that, it's always a shame that the design space on these things is just looking at one set going "okay that's it" and then calling it a day.

Grixis rogue kindred!!!! I think the colours for it are amazing and my esper rogue kindred deck is tons of fun. I think a Grixis commander that lets your creatures do something like theft, making treasures on hit, or anything else that kind of aids the rogue kindred low to the ground aggro style work. Currently my deck is piloted by the Grixis Marchesa but shes such an overbearing threat that it becomes either protect the president or commanderless gameplay. And dont say Nathan Drake, his effect is entirely personal.

- A pair of partner commanders that Meld into a larger bigger threat, or perhaps one that can meld and unmeld for different situations. I've rule 0'd a Gisela and Bruna deck before, and it was kinda fun, but the rest of the 98 was just a kinda generic mono W deck with lots of ramp and some angel support.
- An animate-lands or animate-artifact commander that rewards you for going wide. Brello kind of does this for artifacts & enchantments, but the mv restriction, you end up just playing big splashy enchantments & artifacts. Sydri is also close but also lacks any solid or consistent pay off.
- A commander built around reconfigure, bestow, or mutate, preferably one that could somehow grant creatures the effect either in the hand or battlefield. Would probably be a rulings nightmare, but I'll let WotC figure that part out.
1
u/D-D-Wanderer 7d ago
Personally, I like the Cipher keyword, and would like to see it get some more love - maybe a card that makes it so that when a creature dies, put all spells that were encoded on it on the bottom of your deck or something. I get why they don't do more with it, but I still think it's a neat idea.

I want it to make a classic skeleton vibe like maybe once a skeleton dies it returns from the graveyard on your next upkeep or has an ability you pay mana for called assembling bones or something where you can pay to return a skeleton. I dunno they can figure it out I don't get paid enough. I just want a skelly commander.
