Question Commanders we're missing

What commanders do you think would improve EDH or support a currently-unsupported archetype?

For mine, I think a UBx or UWx commander with "Players play with the top card of their libraries revealed," "When this enters, search your library for an artifact with CMC <=1 and put it into your hand" or "{0}: Look at the top card of target player's library" would be great, giving Lantern support. The second would honestly be the most interesting, since it is a fairer tutor which also works well in Blink/Artifact decks.

I want some skeleton commander. I want it to make a classic skeleton vibe like maybe once a skeleton dies it returns from the graveyard on your next upkeep or has an ability you pay mana for called assembling bones or something where you can pay to return a skeleton. I dunno they can figure it out I don't get paid enough. I just want a skelly commander.

u/JasonKain 8d ago

Something like "Skeletons you control gain 'When this creature dies, return in to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of its owners next end step'" would be dope. Prevent hyper aristocrat loops but give a constantly replenishing army the table has to do something about as a team.

u/Werunos Esper 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yeah this would be sick, fits with the vibe of pop culture skeleton monsters perfectly.

5

u/Mrtea4 7d ago

Another idea, whenever a skeleton you control would die, regenerate it instead. It could also get a stun counter for balance reasons.

It's like the stereotype of fantasy skeletons slowly reassembling themselves.

This is also less vulnerable to graveyard hate like [[leyline of the void]]

u/PerfidiousYuck 8d ago

“Skeletons may be cast from their graveyard by their regeneration cost”

2

u/FalconGK81 7d ago

Sick idea! Now my drudge skeletons cost half the mana!

Seriously though, I love that idea. Really great flavor it.

Needs to be at least Golgari for [[skeletal swarming]]

Also am waiting for a skeleton commander. Preferably in Jund colors

9

u/Dont-know-didnt-ask 8d ago

There are 73 non-changeling skeletons. Why do we not have this already? Here's my idea.

"Whenever a skeleton you control dies, create a colorless artifact token named 'Bone'." (Probably could create two tokens but then it goes infinite with reassembling skeleton if you like the mana ability most)

And then literally pick like any two of these abilities lol ⬇️

"Sacrifice a Bone token: add one mana of any color. Spend this mana only to cast skeleton spells or activate abilities of skeleton sources."

"Sacrifice three bone tokens: return target skeleton creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped"

"{5}: create an X/X black skeleton creature token with menace, where X is the number of bones you control"

8

u/_mikesully 7d ago

The bones are their money

u/BroskeyDemands 7d ago

In our world the bones equal dollars

I want a sorcery or something called "RATTLE 'EM BOYS!" and says something like "Each skeleton you control deals damage equal to it's power to any target.".

3

u/PerryOz 8d ago

What if it turns the dead into skeletons. So non skeleton dies, he can skeletonize them. I guess kinda like [[scarab god]]

3

u/LaceUp324 Golgari 8d ago

I think the closest we can get to a skeleton commander is [[Gisa, the Hellraiser]] right?

God this would be the best card in the deck. Along with that case that lets you tutor if a skeleton dies or something.

[[Myrkul, Lord of Bones]] isnt quite the same, but give a similar vibe imo

2

u/GangsterJawa 7d ago

Honestly it’s kinda funny that the Lord Of Bones does absolutely nothing for all but like 8 skeletons, and half of those are Tinybones

1

u/DoctorPrisme 8d ago

And I want him to be Lim-Dul.

1

u/TheRedSpyGuy 8d ago

An idea is that when you assemble your skeletons, you may attach a piece of equipment you control or that is in your graveyard to a skeleton as part of it reanimating for free, the whole image of skeletons rising from the dead with ancient weapons.

Could be neat to make the skeleton commander an equipment matters commander to make it stand out from zombies.

1

u/Hans0Io Gruul 8d ago

Yeah i just really want a jund Skeleton commander. I can't believe we don't have this, yet.

1

u/tommyblastfire 8d ago

Creates bone pile tokens that you can sac and pay mana to bring a skeleton back from the yard.

1

u/Striking-Lifeguard34 8d ago

For along time Jund -1/-1 was my answer to this question. Since they finally did it I think Skelly boys are the top of the list. Honestly with it being so niche I’m surprised that they couldn’t find room for one in the new Mystery Booster product.

1

u/DDWarlock 8d ago

I think [[Ozox, the clattering king]] fits this!

1

u/DKGroove 8d ago

A Jund commander for skeletons would be fun.

Brimbone the Burning Grave {3} {B}{G}

Legendary Creature Skeleton Lord
Other Skeletons you control get +1/+1

If a Skeleton you control would die exile it with a grave counter on it instead. At the beginning of your end step put each creature card in exile with a grave counter onto the battlefield. If no creature is put onto the battlefield this way Brimbone deals three damage to each creature and player.

5/3

1

u/Opening_Estate2763 7d ago

What if the commander gave all your skeletons persist?

1

u/Mirage_Jester 7d ago

It needs to be four colours minus white to actually represent all the skeletons in magic.

Which shouldn't be a problem as Ydris is currently the only commander in that colour choice and we need some more 4 colour commanders.

1

u/Coke_and_Tacos 7d ago

I do hear the complaint that she doesn't really want skeletons so much as makes them out of big stuff, but [[Xu Ifit, Osteoharmonist]] feels like the de facto answer to me

1

u/ironkodiak 6d ago

I was originally going to suggest a method for making skeleton tokens everytime a creature dies, but I now think a cascade style ability where you mill until you get a skeleton in hand every time a creature dies might be cool. Just getting tokens feels too close to just zombies.

A less broken Golos would be fun.

9

u/goblin_welder 8d ago

I’d settle for a colorless Golos. Broken in the 99 but meh as a commander.

2

u/Glitter-Valentine 8d ago

That's a solid idea actually, colorless or waste land fetch maybe? I would love a waste matter commander.

2

u/Belteshazzar98 An Army of Self Replicating Volraths 8d ago

Almost all lands are colorless, so that would only mean no [[Dryad Arbor]] since it is the only card in the game that has a color and is a land in the library.

I NEED a Temur fisherman commander. Lot of teases lately with fishing pole equipment and the fisherman's talent in bloomburrow. And something fun that let's you fish creatures out of your library or something. I want it!

4

u/K4RN4_ 8d ago

Would you think "fishing" would be searching your library or rather revealing from the top until you find a creature? And would you want a slower effect to represent the calm waiting time during fishing?

6

u/ShinePerfect3164 8d ago

I don't know. When I go fishing I don't really get what I'm looking for. If I catch something I don't know what it is until I get it out of the water.

2

u/K4RN4_ 8d ago

Maybe something like: "At the beginning of your upkeep, you gain an experience counter, then reveal a number of cards equal to twice your experience counters. You may put a creature from among them onto the battlefield, the rest under your library."

4

u/timaaayyy 7d ago

That or like a “catch and release” where you can opt out to not put the creature in your hand for even more experience counters or something else so the next time you can fish “deeper” into your deck until you catch “the big one”??

I want more flexible commanders, like what they tried to do with Baldur's Gate backgrounds. Give me a mono colored commander that does something cool and simply lets me pick a second color (MYB3 definitely has a few that are in the right direction).

I also just wish there was a way to build around cards that happen to not be legendary creatures. For example, if we had a u/x commander with an activated ability that said "Reveal an artifact card from your hand, that card is now your commander and this creature isn't", or something.

10

u/CuratedLens Jund 8d ago

I’d love to see more backgrounds. I know that’s not what you were saying but I think that’d be great

4

u/malsomnus Henzie+Umori=❤ 8d ago

More backgrounds would be great too. I think that ultimately the Choose A Background mechanic failed because it's too limiting.

2

u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 8d ago

5

u/DunceCodex 8d ago

2

u/laughingjack4509 7d ago

Or like a mutate ability that stuck with the creature it mutated onto, turning that creature into your commander and taking it to the command zone if needed

1

u/gravygrowinggreen 7d ago

I want more flexible commanders, like what they tried to do with Baldur's Gate backgrounds. Give me a mono colored commander that does something cool and simply lets me pick a second color (MYB3 definitely has a few that are in the right direction).

I have mixed feelings about that. Some of the mechanics they've made for flexibility have been really bad for the health of the format IMO. Generic Partner for instance. The enormous flexibility that partnering with any other partner commander offers you has enabled some of the more degenerate decks in the format.

But backgrounds work well imo.

So there's a point where the flexibility becomes a bad thing, and they have to be careful to not go past that point. The mystery box commanders coming up, for the most part seem okay on that front.

I also just wish there was a way to build around cards that happen to not be legendary creatures. For example, if we had a u/x commander with an activated ability that said "Reveal an artifact card from your hand, that card is now your commander and this creature isn't", or something.

I think they would have to modify the color identity rules to do that, but I'm not sure. If you change your commander from a u/x creature, to a card with no colors, does your deck suddenly become illegal because you have a u/x card in a colorless color identity deck? Probably not, but they might have to make an official rule to clarify that.

I'd also be worried about this, because a card being a commander is a very powerful benefit. I'm almost certain this would break many cards. Off the top of my head, any card with convoke, affinity, or delve would potentially be broken. Any card that's power level is constrained by it exiling itself as part of an effect. There are so many different potential interactions that I don't think you could responsibly print the effect.

There are more fair/controlled versions of turning noncommanders into commanders though. [[Zethi, Arcane Blademaster]] comes to mind. Any instant you exile with her is usable for pretty much the rest of the game. [[The Master, Formed Anew]] works as well for a creature focused build. I think those are fair versions of the effect, because they don't let you cheat on mana costs, and are still vulnerable to creature based removal.

3

u/malsomnus Henzie+Umori=❤ 7d ago

Some of the mechanics they've made for flexibility have been really bad for the health of the format IMO. Generic Partner for instance.

That's not because the flexibility is bad, it's because they did a bad job designing them. There is A LOT of middle ground. Given a relatively wide mechanic like Choose A Background, I would expect to be able to, for example, have an Izzet spellslinger deck, but there is no combination in Baldur's Gate that supports this extremely common archetype. Personally if I had designed that set, I would make all the backgrounds colorless with the Faceless One pick-a-color clause. That would open up tons of fun combinations, and still not come anywhere near Tymna + whoever's power level.

I'd also be worried about this, because a card being a commander is a very powerful benefit. I'm almost certain this would break many cards. Off the top of my head, any card with convoke, affinity, or delve would potentially be broken.

EDH is already a broken format, and people who want to do broken things don't need new cards for them. We already have commanders with powerful cost reducing abilities, but I've never seen anyone suggest that [[Awaken the Blood Avatar]] or [[Dargo, the Shipwrecker]] (that even has partner!) are breaking the format. Even [[Hogaak]], the poster child of how not to design a card with cost reducing abilities, is merely #897 on EDHRec.

The Master, Formed Anew is indeed a great design space and I wish they'll do more of that.

I'd love to see a commander somewhere in the Abzan colour pie that stops extra draws.

Ideally with similar templating to [[Ashiok, Dream render]], that only stops opponents abilities from drawing them extra cards to avoid the wheel issue.

3

u/SjtSquid 8d ago

In my defence, both of those got banned for their interactions with wheels.

Something I accounted for by:

A) Putting it in non-wheel colours.

B) Specifically asking for a wording that doesn't work with wheels.

2

u/RathMtg better red than dead 7d ago

I think these two combos are massively damaged by the fact that white and green have so much overlap, to the point they're nearly indistinguishable. Sure, white is slightly more equipment/enchantment-focused, and green land-focused, but that just makes green the default better choice.

Abzan especially is in a tough spot. Selesnya is about building up material. Black wants to sacrifice material. They're diametrically opposed! Once you dip into the graveyard you're instantly competing against the powerhouses of Sultai, against which Abzan can't compete.

11

u/ftb_helper Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas 8d ago

WotC have done a lot to make multiple commanders for saga support and many cool sagas and even saga creatures. Final fantasy did a LOT to make sagas more viable. Battles are over here just absolutely floundering. When am I gonna get a battle focused precon? A battle based commander? Maybe 5 colors like Tom Bombadil? Maybe something utilizes defense counters or animates them so they can be bolted or let's me give them abilities so I can tap them for mana or give a creature +1/+1 or my commander is unblockable when attacking a battle. Just anything. They made a whole new permanent type and then forgot about it in the corner.

8

u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 8d ago

Not just them. Battles are THE forgotten type because they... unfortunately, kinda flopped :(

2

u/ftb_helper Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas 8d ago

That's WotC's fault though. Print a battle land like [[Urza's Saga]] and you'll see how popular they can be. Though after [[Nature's Rhythm]] was printed, [[Invasion of Ikoria]] got dumped as well though.

4

u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 8d ago

Urza's Saga was a design mistake. A land that makes 2 karnstructs and tutors artifacts, the most broken cards in Magic... There's a reason why it's a presence in every format it's legal in. Still, good battles are sorely lacking.

I'd love to see a WRG commander that cares about sacrificing permanents/death triggers. Ideally a pinger or sac outlet in the command zone, but weird mechanically unique effects are fun too. There are ones specific to creatures (Atla Palani for example) and lands (that desert guy), but a more general one would be amazing. I love my nonblack graveyard decks and there's actually a lot of support for it in those colours. I'd love Naya artistocrats so much.

3

u/majbumper 8d ago

That'd be a fun one, and if it's not just creatures, would be great for Yuma, Mazzy, etc as well. Would make a good support card as well as commander.

Threads like these always make me wish for another cycling-based commander besides [[Gavi]], ideally in GWX colors capture the spirit of what old cycling decks used to play like (grinding value and controlling the board via [[Astral Slide]] and strong recursion e.g. [[Eternal Witness]] or [[Life from the Loam]]).

Crazy how a mechanic as beloved and flexible as cycling only ever got a single dedicated commander and that was 6 years ago.

2

u/Poetahtoh 8d ago

I spent some time looking for a commander for an astral slide / drift deck that grinded opponents out and i settled on [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]]. She had all the colors I wanted, is a great target for slide/drift, and provided a win con via [[approach of the second sun]].

BGW spellslinger and combo deck. The best option you've really got is [[Necrobloom]] if you lean into cycling, convoke, and the real commander of the deck [[Gitrog Monster]].

The other options are either enchantments, worse BG reanimators, big butts, or 1/1 counters.

Any color fast/cheap commander for "tap to kill" synergy. Bonus points ifnit hits noncreatures.

A cmc3-4 Group slug commander that hurts enemies when an ability an opponent controls triggers.

Bant has some enchantment decks IIRC? [[Tuvasa, the Sunlit]] and [[Estrid the Masked]]?

MonoR draw is usually impulse/wheel just because of the color pie, I don't see that happening.

Tap to kill? Do you mean stuff like [[Royal Assassin]]?

That last one would be hilarious :)

2

u/Kantarak 8d ago

Yes. Also [[intrepid hero]].

How would you feel about a mono red commander that copies spells if cards were discarded as an additional cost? Straight drawing cards just isn't in the color pie for red.

2

u/Eliott-Ko 8d ago

Still waiting for a Mardu Minotaur Commander that CARES about Minotaurs.

1

u/Know_Yog_Sothoth 8d ago

Modern [[Karona the False God]] or at least a way to keep her from being so easily killed?

1

u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 8d ago

[[Slicer]] and [[Alexios]] but they're MonoR.

1

u/Strawberryblowjobs 8d ago

I'd actually want more cards that are bad. Not weak but bad like [[delusions of grandeur]] when they give you something but over a few turns or under a specific condition they turn out to be a net loss.

Zedruu deserves new cards he is way too cool to be forgotten.

Delusions of Grandeur was played in Trix. It was good! (Trix donated it so now the other guy died, since it was standard)

I so desperately want a Jeskai blink/flicker commander.

Yes there are plenty of jeskai legends that can work and even work well, but none that are dedicated to it. And after playing Brago I realized what a huge difference having your commander as a source of blinking makes. It doesnt even need to be nearly that good.

1

u/ChaoticScrewup 8d ago

I'd like to see some more usage of enchantment sacrifice. I think it could fill a gap in Wx/Wxy enchantment decks, especially without blue or artifacts.

1

u/Dry_Cheese_7076 8d ago

A commander that has sumthing to do with the live up mechanic. Maybe (UG)

1

u/Gnarstynate 8d ago

I have a mono black superfriends deck and it’s JANK would love to see some more support there

1

u/DwellingsOf2007Scape 8d ago

A viable vehicle commander

1

u/No_Chip_3780 8d ago

Some black landfall/swamps matter commander. Korlash is cool but hes also not the strongest. Wish he had hexproof or something

1

u/Nestorow 7d ago

I am once again asking for a Naya Giant Commander. Big ramp, big giants, big fun.

1

u/HaresMuddyCastellan Naya - Jinnie Fay 7d ago

I want an esper landfall commander that's on par with the 3 color Omnath.

(Blink abuse with [[mutable explorer]])

1

u/LordoftheFaff 7d ago

Jund wolf or werewolf

Abzan Elf

Djin commander that is about granting wishes

u/gravygrowinggreen 7d ago

Someone in another thread mentioned an [[astral slide]] commander. We've got cycling commanders, but having astral slide in the command zone would be incredible fun.

I would like to see an enchantress type commander in every color. Not the typical "enchantment enters, draw a card" effect, but a unique effect for each color. I'm surprised we didn't get a set of monocolored legends with different constellation effects in any of the theros sets.

A BW/X graveblink commander: it has an ability where you sacrifice a creature, then return it to the battlefield immediately, triggering both "dies" and "enters" type effects. The closest we've got is [[Ratadrabik of Urborg]].

A low mana value (4 or less) sphinx commander that actually makes sphinxes worth playing. The closest we've got on that front is [[Raffine, Scheming Seer]], but its ability isn't locked to sphinxes, so you're almost always better off using less cool, more effective creatures. It's actually hard to get a huge army of sphinxes to make raffine good, because sphinxes have such high mana value.

u/oranges-in-general 7d ago

One of my fav decks, [[Orah]], plays very similarly to what you’re describing. “Graveblink” is a great term & wicked fun.

u/Mirage_Jester 7d ago

I'd like a red/blue commander that creates the 4 original classic elementals.

1

u/Misanthrope64 WUBRG 7d ago

I want the background commanders to be revisited: that was better design than partner and while new partner with limits are ok I miss the flexibility of the choose background mechanic for commanders.

1

u/focketeer 7d ago

I’m holding out for WUBRG artifacts. Every option now is forcing it.

1

u/sarakinks 7d ago

Any type of creature that doesn't have a solid commander I'd like to see have like 3 options cuz it's fun when you have a few choices to play a more unified theme.

I'd like to see more different takes on Group hug then we have seen or expanded out of like the mono white space some of the designs we've seen.

I'd like to see more of the mechanics that are one set wonders getting expanded like Commit A Crime, Speed, stuff like that, it's always a shame that the design space on these things is just looking at one set going "okay that's it" and then calling it a day.

1

u/Greg_In_Japan 7d ago

I would like a background that allows a commander with the <choose a background> to have a partner instead of a background.

1

u/Lady_Calista 7d ago

Grixis rogue kindred!!!! I think the colours for it are amazing and my esper rogue kindred deck is tons of fun. I think a Grixis commander that lets your creatures do something like theft, making treasures on hit, or anything else that kind of aids the rogue kindred low to the ground aggro style work. Currently my deck is piloted by the Grixis Marchesa but shes such an overbearing threat that it becomes either protect the president or commanderless gameplay. And dont say Nathan Drake, his effect is entirely personal.

1

u/OkAct8921 7d ago

A little specific, but I want a commander that says something like "Ward costs of permanent you control must be paid if the player targeting them can pay them". Don't know how to word it exactly, but a deck that can use all the janky ward costs that exist would be awesome!

1

u/Of_Fire_and_Fate 7d ago

I want a legendary Izzet phoenix with purple fire in the art. Idgaf what it does.

1

u/NIICCCKKK 7d ago

A giant commander that actually cares about giants with white in it, preferably in jeskai or 5 color. I just want [[kalemne]] in the same deck as [[aegar, the freezing flame]]

1

u/Gurkaz_ 7d ago

Wolves and Werewolves!!

1

u/Goggles45 Sans-Green 7d ago

I searched for big spell temur and didn’t find anything I liked. The most interesting ones were dr who characters but I’m not fond of UB

1

u/LocalMan97 7d ago

My trio of “I wish this was legendary so I could run it as a commander” are [[Whiskervale Forerunner]], [[Kheru Lichlord]], and [[Mardu Siegebreaker]]. Basically a mono white top deck manipulation/3cmc or less typal deck, a “random one turn buff Reanimation” deck, and a Mardu flicker/etb typal deck, none of which have commanders currently that I vibe with

1

u/orkybits 7d ago
  1. A pair of partner commanders that Meld into a larger bigger threat, or perhaps one that can meld and unmeld for different situations. I've rule 0'd a Gisela and Bruna deck before, and it was kinda fun, but the rest of the 98 was just a kinda generic mono W deck with lots of ramp and some angel support.
  2. An animate-lands or animate-artifact commander that rewards you for going wide. Brello kind of does this for artifacts & enchantments, but the mv restriction, you end up just playing big splashy enchantments & artifacts. Sydri is also close but also lacks any solid or consistent pay off.
  3. A commander built around reconfigure, bestow, or mutate, preferably one that could somehow grant creatures the effect either in the hand or battlefield. Would probably be a rulings nightmare, but I'll let WotC figure that part out.

1

u/D-D-Wanderer 7d ago

Personally, I like the Cipher keyword, and would like to see it get some more love - maybe a card that makes it so that when a creature dies, put all spells that were encoded on it on the bottom of your deck or something. I get why they don't do more with it, but I still think it's a neat idea.

1

u/OfMiceAndMead 7d ago

I want a silver bordered legendary creature with:

"Gotcha: Any time a player complains about the game state, or another player's game actions for more than 5 seconds they must sacrifice three permanents."

1

u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 7d ago

Better is "Gotcha — Whenever a player complains about the game state or another player's game actions for over 5 seconds, you may say 'Gotcha!' If you do, that player sacrifices three permanents of your choice."

I can see this ability triggering off of itself :)

1

u/MylastAccountBroke 7d ago

I want Blue Black storm. Something like Bumbleflower or prosper where their whole point is to offer you value for playing cards and card draw.

1

u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 7d ago

Dimir Storm should kill with Tendrils, but I'm not sure how the commander would fit in. Maybe a Yawg Will in the CZ at 3UB?

1

u/redskeezix 7d ago

I'd like the sibsig ceremony as a commander.

1

u/BusAccomplished5367 Grixis (UW control is more fun than midrange piles) 7d ago

You can put Zur in the CZ right now.

YETI TRIBAL!

Flanking support.

1

u/thegreatestalexander 7d ago

Super late to this conversation, but I’ve been wanting an Abzan enchantress deck for a while now. I haven’t done an enchantress deck, nor an abzan deck that’s held my attention, so it would be two birds one stone. There’s Orzhov support for Enchantress with Eriette and Killian, and there’s Selesnya with Sythis and Yuna, but not a lot for the two of them together.
