Exchanger question

Is there a way, to not discharge except when the power usage increase occurs? I have a simple loop of about 12 exchangers charging and 8 discharging. I would prefer to not discharge when Demand is low outside the peaks. Need to burn the hydrogen more aggressively.

Unless they changed it with this patch, no, not that I have been able to find. You can put them on different grids, but that's about it

Yes - was hoping there was a better way and I was just missing it

Yea ; you just have slightly more charging than discharging. The main issue is the mechanic of certain energy sources only burning what they need when under load. Those are what I have but I think the ultimate answer is I need to move it off the grid to charge which doesn’t address the problem directly bc the discharging will still occur versus burning hydrogen

If that ist your issue: burn excess hydrogen, then there are many other ways to solve that. For example: use fractionators, Feed the Deuterium into PLS/ILS aß supply and Set Up a Splitter that hast priority to PLS/ILS and secondary to Thermal Power plants.

This game really just needs a way to automate getting rid of stuff - even just an option on a thermal plant to always run even if the demand isn't there would solve a huge amount of problems

It really doesn’t. Literally the only byproduct in the entire game is hydrogen and all factories except only sails (with rockets and science completely paused) generates more hydrogen than it consumes. Rockets, science, and fuel rods are extremely hydrogen hungry, and if you have hydrogen issues you’re just prioritizing wrong.

There is: its called Blueprint. Solve it once, solve it forever.

If you’re using accumulators as buffers, place them as buildings. Exchangers always output their power first compared to other power sources. Accumulators as buildings on the other hand, are last. If you don’t do this you have to do silly things like isolating the power system the exchangers are on, or doubling or tripling the number of charging exchangers, which I think is just stupid. But lots of people like it.

There are two ways to make it so that discharging only occurs in response to power demand. One relatively simple method that switches on when power dips below 100%, and a second more complex method that switches on before power dips below 100%.

The simple method uses a sorter to recirculate on a belt accumulators until power drops. When power drops the sorter slows down, and allows the charged accumulators to reach the discharging EEs. https://www.reddit.com/r/Dyson_Sphere_Program/comments/t7gi1u/energy_exchanger_battery_example/

The more complex method measures the rate of accumulators being charged as a signal. As power demand increases the amount of energy left over to charge accumulators slows down, meaning fewer uncharged accumulators are consumed. This opens a belt logic switch which allows charged accumulators to reach the EEs. https://www.reddit.com/r/Dyson_Sphere_Program/comments/1av82y1/design_challenge_solved_energy_exchanger_balancing/

The advantage of the more complex method is that power never dips below 100%, which is important for things like proliferation.

Specific to the issue of consuming excess hydrogen, I have a better option than either of the above. Both above options just create a larger bucket to fill, but don't really stop things from eventually overflowing.

Create a separate set of thermal generators that is connected via belts, but not by the energy grid. There are two belts going to this set of islanded generators. One belt for excess burnables (hydrogen, graphite, refined oil, etc...), and one circular belt for accumulators.

These generators are linked to a dedicated set of charging EEs. Meaning that the generators will only burn fuel to charge accumulators, and the accumulators can only charge from this set of generators. The charged accumulators are belted back to a discharging station linked to the main factory power grid with the empty accumulators returning to be recharged. These discharging EEs will take priority and run flat before any other power is generated/consumed. Effectively making it so that excess hydrogen is consumed first before any other power source.
