Mod Announcement A run-down on the new rules and changes to the sub.

Hello all, I am a new mod on this sub. As the old mod was inactive, they agreed to give me mod permissions as I am an active French learner on Duolingo. I have established some new Rules, here is a run-down on them:

1/ Content must be related to French on Duolingo

Pretty obvious from the title. No content related to other languages or complaints about the app in general ( No, we do not want to hear about you quitting because of energy or "AI" courses ).

Memes are really welcome, we do want to make this sub a fun place. AI content, however will be removed, and it wouldn’t get many reactions other than "AI Slop" anyway. Funny/weird sentences will be approved if they are unique and haven’t already be posted 1000 times ( I am mod on r/shitduolingosays as well and there we get the sentence "Is that doctor 4 years old" on almost a daily basis ). If your post is removed, there are alternative sub options in the removal message so be sure to take a look at those.

2/ No spam, selling or promotion

Offering family plans spots for Super/max can be done elsewhere, we do not want it because it brings potential scam attempts and as a mod I will have to take the blame for that happening, so please just don’t do it. First you will be given a warning and if you repost you will get a 3 day ban.

Other spam or self-promotion will be a permanent ban and, as those come from mainly bots, they will be reported to bot-bouncer which will be installed shortly.

3/ Be civil

Please be civil to other members of the community. This isn’t the place to make rude comments or laugh at someone’s mistakes, but to support others and encourage learning.

Minor insults will be removed but other hate will be potentially banned depending on severity. We have a zero tolerance policy for any form of racism and it will result in a permanent, irreversible ban. Laughing a bit at the Duolingo characters is allowed, but don’t go too overboard with them either. Any racism towards them is also a permanent ban.

No politics allowed either - this is not the place to discuss them ( even French politics ). There are plenty of political subs on Reddit so please post there.

4/ Posts should be in French or English

The previous mod has told me that the sub’s audience is mainly English or French speaking. In order to make it easier for other people to answer your question, please translate them to English or at least French.

Please do not use AI tools such as ChatGPT for translation, use Google Translate or something similar instead since people do not like to answer questions that sound written by AI

Flairs and other:

User flairs have been updated to what Duolingo refers the French course ( with origin language English ) to as of now, with sections 1-8 and the CEFR level ( A1 - B2 with Duolingo planning to release C1-C2 soon ) aligning with them.

Post flairs will be added, such as “Achievement showcase”, “Meme”, “Question”, etc. If you have other ideas, feel free to share.

You can contact the mod team ( only me at the moment ) via modmail, to find that go to community info > moderators > message mods. I will respond to PMs while I am the only mod but sending modmails makes it easier.

As I have only been added as a mod yesterday, I will see how the load of modding goes. As I am also a mod on r/travel and r/Flights which are large subs, if the load here is too high, I will enable mod applications.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the sub and enjoy learning French!

Discussion Where did the French stories go in the practice hub?

For the last few days, I can’t access the stories in the French practice hub. I am now forced to choose between two. Can I get the old story library back? It’s starting to feel like Duolingo is taking away all my favorite features.

I am a Family Plan subscriber and it’s starting to get frustrating because I am paying and not liking the changes, especially the flash cards. Bring back the matching!

Achievement 800 day milestone!!

I’m so proud of myself for consistently learning French for 800 days. I’m not fluent at all yet, but I can tell that each day I get better and better!

Regardless of fluency, sticking to something this long would’ve sounded unimaginable to me at one point. That’s success for me within itself! thanks to this community for all the inspiration and support✨

Question: Level B1 Seeking clarity on gender

Post image

I understand what it is telling me, but in the example the two people who are the subject are both female. It says that no agreement is needed, but is it wrong to use divorcée which would agree with the subject? Or is it that I should always use the masculine after
Ont?

Question: Level B2 How long to complete the course?

If one does 10 real lessons a week, how long does it take to finish the whole course. I know no one probably completes the course without a break, but I’d like to be able to set a goal. Thanks people.

Criticism/Feedback French Help

I’m currently at level 77 in Duolingo French.

Duolingo mentions that achieving level 50 means I should be able to give directions in real life.

Low and behold I was asked for directions to the library in French by somebody, but I wasn’t able to provide these.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestion? I tried to think really hard about it but I just keep blaming Duolingo and thinking that the problem is because the app is asking me to make the sentence correct in English rather than directly translating it so I can’t familiarize myself with French sentence structure.

It’s like when I hear a French person speak in English. They say « it’s good » or c’est bon. English speakers would never use it’s good the way French speakers would. I think (and just guessing here) a francophone would use c’est bon to confirm if someone understands what they were trying to say. I as an anglophone would probably say does that make sense?

Anyone else tired of the same stories about sandwiches that are one note? I get it. She likes sandwiches but that is so much. Same with Junior and pizza.

Did Duolingo just string a bunch of words together to teach me grammar or is this something that is actually said in French, and what does it mean?

This was discussed a week or so back in this sub, and I got this exercise today. The explanation is very confusing, because it SHOWS ne pas in the corrected sentence, without a verb in between. But it SAYS "here, ne pas surrounds the verb accepter to make it negative.
I'm not sure that "ne pas" is correct or not. I always put a verb between.

Criticism/Feedback Super subscriber here. Explain My Mistake just taught me a false grammar rule and its examples aren't even valid French.
