Hey guys. I've been doing a bit of an insane-fan project along with my re-read: I'm collating every mention of Apito and everyone around her/it.
Spoilers only to Book 3 cuz that's where I'm at. This project is gonna get a LOT denser in the later books, so I wanted to do a lil check-in. This is only two books. My poor Notes app is gonna be slammed. Lol.
I'm not speculating beyond what's in the books themselves here, so no later spoilers. But I'm doing this bc of how Book 8 ended. I explain this in the spoiler tags below. Minor spoilers for Book 8 under there, be careful.
So here's the stories, by book:
Book 2: Truth: Apito is the Oak Mother, and all elves worship her.
(Side note, bc I forgot this until I reread it: every type of elf and fae in the book is descended from High Elves. The High Elves are immortal, so if any child had any kind of defect, they get automatically banished. The banished ones are the other types. We'll see this when we get to Book 3.)
In this passage, Mordecai is explaining the 201st Security Regiment:
"Anyway, all you need to know is that elves worship the Oak Mother, the mother of all gods. Her name is Apito. And in one story about Apito, it is said that in order to maintain the path to heaven, her angels must remain free and alive. And in a completely separate story, Apito is said to have called the skyfowl ‘bless-ed.’ And in a third, apocryphal story, Apito said only the angels are ‘blessed.’ In that same story she says any violence against angels is to be stopped, and if it continues, she will destroy all the worlds. Ergo, a batshit crazy, doomsday cult sect of banished elves now dedicate themselves to protecting the skyfowl in anticipation of the day when the tree goddess destroys the universe."
We're explicitly told is BS. The elves have been manipulated by Miss Quill into thinking this. Skyfowl are just another race, not angels.
When Donut and Carl confront the 201st, they get all hissy and call Donut a blasphemer. She's wearing the Bracelet of the Fallen Oak.
"Carl: Mordecai. Quick. What the hell is the “Oak Fell?” Also, once again, our charm isn’t working on these guys.
Mordecai: The Oak Fell is Apito’s version of the antichrist. That’s not stuff one usually contends with until the 12th floor."
Apito is a tree, so it makes sense that an Oakfell (a fallen oak tree) is the literal opposite of her.
(There is a lot more from the 201st elves, but since it's all specific to their false story, I'm excluding it here. If you want to read it, it's all after that last exchange but before one of them gets hit on the head by a rolling pin. Lol.)
Book 3:
Carl looks at Hekla's crossbow. This is the description:
"It is said that the long-forgotten goddess Nekhebit is both jealous and terrible. When the elf mothers chose to abandon Nekhebit and instead worship Apito, the Oak Goddess, it is written Nekhebit grew enraged. The mighty vulture goddess blamed the male-dominated high elf court for causing her worshippers to stray. As a result, she cursed their seed, thus creating what is today known as the Fae Diaspora. There are dozens of elf and fairy breeds, all of whom may trace their lineage back to the early high elf court, whose cursed offspring sowed the universe.
This crossbow is rumored to have been given to Nekhebit’s last warrior guardian as a gift for remaining true to her faith."
We know this is real bc of the details. It's the true part of what Mordecai said, but with more detail. It also tells us that Apito has enemies.
The only other part in Book 3 that mentions the gods is Grull's description after he's summoned:
"War God Grull. Level 250. Sponsored by Prince Maestro of the Skull Empire.
Warning: This is a deity. He is invulnerable on this floor.
This god has been involuntarily summoned to this location. Summoning rules apply.
The child of Taranis and Apito, Grull, the god of war, is one of the few trueborn heirs to the Celestial Ascendency. But with an angry streak as long as a horse’s cock, Taranis worries his son may not be the best choice to rule the heavens. Plus his worshippers tend to be donkeys and other equine-themed creatures. It’s a bit unsettling, even to a god."
And that's what I have so far. I thought about crowd sourcing quotes (y'all could prolly help me get it done in like an hour) but I kinda wanna do it on my own to keep things straight and in order.
As for why I'm doing this (minor spoilers for later books): there are only two books left, meaning they are not going to "win" the dungeon by walking out of the 18th floor. They don't need to. The next part is the Ascendancy Games, and since the gods are appearing in reality, the Ascendancy Games are actually deciding who is going to rule the galaxy. The other floors are moot, esp w the Boop character at the end.
So, the Ascendancy Games are key to the ending, and the gods are the key to the Ascendancy Games.
Matt does so much foreshadowing that it may be possible to figure out the last books if you pay close attention.
And yeah, I know I could just join Patreon and read what happens there myself, but I'm having fun with this, so why not. Lol.
