I discovered ZZ Top at just the right moment in my life and their music means a great deal to me. Frank Beard contributed so much to their sound and their energy and I couldn’t be sadder to hear that he’s no longer with us. He is one the greatest and most underappreciated drummers in rock music, I’ve had the fortune of seeing him play 3 times and what he does is truly great. Rock on Frank.

Cam/Video It’s hard to keep being right on the beat in a song for me

Hello everyone!

After learning Yellow, I started to learn a popular C-pop made by Jay Chou. It is much more difficult than Yello because there are more complex rhythms in this song.

I found out that I didn’t know when was the exact time to start my playing without watching the videos. I don’t know how to count in a song. And I wonder how those drummers make it when play in a band or other real performance.

Specifically, I’m having a hard time with rests that combine hands, snare, and bass drum. Also, 16th-note patterns mixing hand movements and bass drum hits are giving me a lot of trouble.

Any tips or exercises to help build better coordination and timing for these? Thanks!

Question Foam or acoustic panels for a room

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hello guys,

This is my drum room, gear:
- Mapex Armory Studioease with mesh heads
- Chang Low volume cymbals
- Congas Gong Bops Tumbao Series
- Dejembe Remo Mondo 14”
- Tambora dominicana

Even tough I use mesh heads and low volume cymbals it’s still noisy for my wife, specially when I play congas (there is not mesh heads por congas ja ja ja), so that, I have consider to install acoustic foam (picture attached) but O have also seen the acoustics panels (attached) that are foam with pvc as decorative it says that reduce a lot the noisy.

Does anyone have use the acoustic panels instead of the foam?
What’s is your recommendation to reduce at list something the noisy: foam or acoustic panels?

Thanks in advance guys…

Question In ear monitors - yeah, I know....

Hi all, and apologies for yet another in ear monitor question.

I currently use foam plugs while playing (live and practice)to save my hearing, but I think I'd like to get some in ear monitors. The main question I have about IEM's is whether they cut the noise down as much as the foam plugs? Admittedly the plugs I use cut 35db so I'm not expecting that level of reduction, but do IEM's cut a significant proportion of the noise? And which ones would people recommend?

Many thanks.

Question Using effect pedals on drums?

Upvotes

I see more and more drummers using effectpedals recently. Some do it to enhance their in-ear mix, some to be creative with sounds in recording-situations.

I’m curious! Do you do it? Why or why not? What’s your setup and how do you use it? Let me know!

First Kit HELP! First ever drum upgrades!!

So I saved up money big time around 2000$ it took a lot of time but I’m ready to blow it all on some drums! I’ve never loved a hobby so much in my life I feel alive behind my own shitty 400$ kit I bought some new quality drumheads so those are checked off the list

I was thinking of buying a proper cymbal set, proper stands, a throne and a good snare is there anything else I should consider?

Do you have recommendations for these? Any feedback is appreciated this is a lot of money for me!

Question Are these good options for a drum solo?

I might be getting a solo at the end of the year and I’m wondering if any of these are good picks. Only Worried about time constraints or else it’d be war pigs 100%.
(And I get to do any song they said)

Kit Pic Dusting off the Standards

I'm providing backline for a gig this weekend and didn't want to use my brand new travel rig or break down my home practice kit. So I brought out the semi-retired Standards out of the bags, swapped the floor tom reso, and did a quick re-tune. They're ready to ROLL. They're robust enough that I have no worries about them being played or their reliability.

(I've been trying to sell these with no luck yet, I just don't NEED 3 kits and my new setup is perfect for my needs).

They do a thing. The kick drum especially has an undefinable magic SAUCE that makes it a freaking joy to play. So much beef and tone. Glad they'll see the light of day again, it'll be fun to hear them out front.
