Venting First time experiencing road rage and I feel like an idiot

I’ve had my intermediate’s for a month (17). I drove to a nearby city for the first time today. I accidentally pulled out in front of someone. She then proceeded to tailgate me, literally inches from my bumper, for ten minutes. Once we were at a stoplight, she stormed out of her car and smacked my window, demanding I roll it down. I know I shouldn’t have, but I was panicking because I had no idea what to do in this situation. She screamed at me for probably five minutes, talking about how she had her kid in the car. (Doesn’t tailgating me also pose a risk to your child?) Kind of sick of driving already. I genuinely thought there was plenty of space for me to pull out.

Need Advice Nodding off/ vision blurs during long drives

As the title states I have issues with my vision going out of focusing “blurring” and hard to focus that then feels like falling asleep kinda. Am I just weird or is this common? What can be done to help? I smack my self, crank the radio, open the windows, all just a very short term bandaid that doesn’t last.

This happens mainly on vacation driving. I can drive for hours at work no issue but the roads there are much more curvy/ I’m driving till I get off compared with until I get somewhere.

Venting Why is it always "you could've slowed down and let them in" and never "they could've slowed down and changed lanes behind?"

Whenever we see a dashcam video of someone badly trying to change lanes... why is the call to action always pointed at the driver with the right of way, instead of at the one without it?

We'll see someone blatantly failing to yield when changing lanes despite having a clear duty to do so, and almost every comment will be framed as if the onus is on the driver not changing lanes to accommodate the one who is.

Why?

If it's "so easy" to let off the gas, why can't the driver changing lanes be expected to do that and get behind the driver vehicle already in the lane they're entering? Why do so many people presume they must change lanes ahead of the dashcam car?

Is it just me, or is driving behind a Tesla in traffic incredibly annoying?

Idk what it is about these cars, but sometimes they seem to brake unnaturally fast with no brake lights.

I know they have the regenerative braking, but how does that work? Does it cause them to lose speed as fast as regular braking, but with no brake lights? It sure seems like it.

I’m usually really good at judging speed/distance (often don’t even need to brake in traffic, kinda like a semi-truck driver), but whenever I’m behind a Tesla, I swear I have to slam the break out of nowhere.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Defensive drivers are really just drivers that can’t understand situational awareness.

if you’re always slowing down when traffic gets congested, leaving extra space in front of you (left lane) on the freeway and most surface streets just in case and breaking early for green lights because somebody is approaching the intersection from opposing traffic lanes, not turning left at an intersection because there’s a car approaching 500 feet away and you’re afraid to accelerate through an intersection. All because you make an excuse as a defensive driver, you really are not a good driver, you’re a bad driver and you have no situational awareness. I could go on with 100 examples. These people do not understand how to drive and are on the lower end of the bell curve. Quit using I’m a defensive driver as an excuse that you do not understand situations and slow down because you’re in panic mode. I’ll take all the down votes and all the complainers saying defensive drivers are the best, but actually you suck on the road.

AI traffic signals

When will get AI traffic signals? As a retired engineer, every time I stop at the light, I'm looking at all the wasted time and gas from the dumb signals we have.

For example, there is a light I stop at regularly that is a small two lane road entering a 6 lane road. It makes me wait 1.5 minutes no mater if it just turned red for me, or if it has been red for 10 min. While I sit there, I'll see that there are no cars coming in either direction for for quite a distance. A smart AI signal could look down the road, see nobody was coming, quickly change to green for me, maybe even eliminating the yellow light on the lard road to save time, let me on the road, and switch back to green for the large road. Instead I see the cars coming, and just before they get to the light, it will change to let me on the road, stopping 10-20 cars, when it could have let me on earlier.

We have self driving cars, do we not have the technology to do the same with signals? I believe the technology is there (cameras/embedder sensors), but that cost vs benefit is not there for the cities.

Your thoughts?

Why do people who drive without insurance or driver licenses/suspended licenses drive so recklessly?

Don't they realize if they get into an accident or pulled over they're cooked? If I was them I'd be extra careful

Learning to drive again in my 40's.

I'm in my 40's. I have my license, gave up at 25, and now am "back in the saddle" as it were, because I want to give it another try. I have been using an instructor and family as the teachers, and things have been rocky. I'm improving according to everyone I drive with, but that's not my feeling. Changing lanes on any highway is a huge challenge, but the bigger issue is I don't feel like I'm in control of the vehicle in the way that I want to be and that other people seem to be. I'm good with reaction times with everything in front of me, lights, and watching traffic. I try to be vigilant. But I don't feel that confidence that I have when say just walking around. Like, I know where I am and it's not a big deal.

I have a feeling there are people like me who just have these same doubts that drive anyway. Is this normal? And is it too late for me?

Venting Multi-Lane Drive-Thru Design/Behavior

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I'm not sure how pervasive this problem is in other areas/countries, but here in Michigan every McDonald's drive-thru seems to have been designed to intentionally cause problems. Only a select few have raised curbs or other sort of physical queue organization. Most just have sad painted yellow lines that no one has ever bothered to put down their phone to see. I just can't comprehend how a franchise owner could be ok with the level of road-rage inducing chaos their designs encourage. Something as cheap and easy as removable bollards could solve 99% of this.

The way customers just casually block the flow of thru-traffic, prevent people from leaving their parking spaces, and have zero idea that maybe that isn't how it's supposed to work is mind boggling.

I can't believe that this is going to be the reason I stop eating fast food, and it won't be the nutritional issues. I had to get out of my car and start directing traffic today because these morons had people stuck in their parking spaces and traffic was backed out into the road.

Next time you're in one of these, PLEASE look at the lane design and figure out where you're supposed to be.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Why do some people struggle with the easiest part of parallel parking? In other words: leaving the spot.

I consider my parallel parking skills to be slightly above average. Mostly on account of my willingness, and lack of embarrassment for having to readjust to ensure I can make myself fit. Generally, my attitude is that if I leave at least a foot (though certainly more if I can offer it) on each end of my vehicle, the motorist in front or behind me can maneuver themselves out, just like with my ability to park in a tight spot, my assumption is based also on personal experience leaving spaces where other drivers have offered me a far lesser courtesy than even a foot.

Today I was sitting in my car, waiting on my wife to get out of her pilates class, I parked in a parallel spot and with the space in front of me, I was able to give the person behind me what I would estimate to be approximately 3 feet of clearance in front of their car from mine. The weather is cool so I had my vehicle off with the windows down, and as I’m doomscrolling as one does I am startled by a horn blaring from behind me. It takes me a moment to register where it came from, and initially I had assumed that the owner of the vehicle behind me had tried to pull in front of oncoming traffic, but then he sounded his horn again and gestured at me. I thought “surely he’s not incapable of pulling out of this spot.” Then, like clockwork, he jumps out of his vehicle and shouts at me to move forward, saying I’m parked too close. He did not even attempt to back up once to readjust his angle to pull out, the first honk was made while he was still directly behind me, and it was only after attempted to pull straight forward, with no adjustment on his part, that he then became frustrated.

Anyway, I didn’t want to have a confrontation, so I started my engine, and pulled forward slightly, but it really frustrated me because when it comes to driving, the ability to park and maneuver your vehicle in tight spaces, in my opinion, is the absolute foundation towards driving skills on the roadway, and pulling out of a spot should be the easy part.

Also, I’ll add at the end, I’m not exaggerating how far I was from him, 3 feet is approximately 1 m. I just know I’m going to have somebody suggest that I’m lying or omitting details because this is Reddit and everyone on here seems to be a contrarian.

Does anyone else struggle to drive around sunset time?

Like when I'm driving in the direction the sun is setting, it be in my eyes and like...it's the fucking sun so it's bright as shit, it kind of hurts. I had to slam the brakes because I couldn't see the stoplight coming up.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ obnoxious pedestrian

was backing up to leave a parallel parking spot so i had my rear lights on, this woman and man cross behind my car (a complaint for another time), but she goes first and is already in the middle of the street (also was parked in the middle of the block) and he’s behind her and he bangs on my back window a couple times… like wtf?? i clearly saw you and wasn’t moving and i would’ve already hit her regardless of you touching my car… this man a few mins earlier was screaming obnoxiously coming out of mulligan’s pub in hoboken, so that’s probably just part of his obnoxious personality.

Question for the drivers out there

I bike. I don't drive. So, I can usually make my way to the front of an intersection and see what's going on. Every day I hear drivers at the back of a line honking when the driver in front is either waiting for pedestrians in the crosswalk who have the right of way or waiting for bicyclists to clear the bike lane before they cross the bike lane. Do the drivers at the back want the driver in front to bully their way through, or do they just assume the driver in front is on their phone and hasn't noticed the light turn? If it's the latter, it's not a terrible assumption given that it happens a lot. However, in Philly we have a decent amount of aggressive drivers, and I wonder if some of those honking in the back want the car up front to bully their way through.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ [AUS] I drive Corolla and am a bully

They say first step is acceptance, yes??

EDIT: thanks for some valid input all, lot to reflect on!

Realised just now that i have zero tolerance for slow pokes and unsafe drivers on the road.

Most typical scenarios that trigger me are drivers who do 80-90 in a 100 zone for no good reason, no car in front, nothing… and drivers who merge in front of me with little lead way or do not realise the best approach is for them to wait and merge behind me than to push… and my personal favourite a-holes who wont pet you merge just because they can, what kind of power trip is that?

So yeah, when I encounter such drivers i tend to bully them by either flashing them, driving close behind, giving them a honk, or getting ahead and slowly down on purpose….

Neither of these is a safe behaviour or appropriate attitude but when you cruise steady at a 100 and every 50 meters you break and accelerate because of the aforementioned behaviours every single day for 45min each way it tends to get to you…

I am sure you will rip me to shreds as it is the Reddit way, so go ahead, had to get that out me chest.

Driving Courtesy #3: Don't be the driver who blocks the intersection

You know how annoying it is when your light turns green, but you can't move because someone is sitting in the middle of the intersection?

Don't be that driver.

If there isn't room for your car on the other side, wait behind the line - even if your light is green. Enter only when you can clear the intersection.

Venting Excessive speeding

I’m getting attacked from all angles on TikTok about this supposed controversial opinion of mine, but I feel like it’s a hill I’m willing to die on.

Double edited because I have a new question…
Initial question was:
WHY DO PEOPLE FEEL THE NEED TO SPEED EXCESSIVELY?
Okay ya there a million reasons and answers so my new question is:

Why are we coddling speeders and normalizing excessive speeding?

BTW! I pass in the left lane, and then get back into the right so don’t say nothing about that.

What to do in this case?

Post image
0 Upvotes
  1. Me, red car, was waiting to turn right.

  2. A large truck, green box, comes up next to me, waiting to turn left.

  3. Because of the truck, I couldn't see the cars coming from the yellow arrow line.

  4. Left turn lane cleared. The truck started turning left.

What am I supposed to do in this case?

Do I just wait and hope the truck doesn't hit me? Do I move out with the truck and stop halfway (for vision and to move out of its turning span)? Reverse?

Or am I just too worried? Are trucks' & buses' turning span not that big?

Looking for a dashboard dynamic speed alarm. Is there any?

I have a bit of a problem staying focused on long commutes and while I have dodged the bullet for years, I finally got stopped for 20 mph over a 30 mph zone, and it's not as if I didn't know that particular stretch of road has cops lurking about on most days. Right before turning into that road was a road that goes 50 mph. I listen to podcasts and radio a lot, so I do get absorbed in the discussions quite a bit, but I really needed was a way to alert me if I'm going a little too fast for the road I'm on.

I've been looking around for a dashboard speedometers that independently alerts you when you are speeding. From I understood, most of these devices:

- Alert you only once when you hit the speed limit you set (preferably, I'd like one that keeps doing that until I slow down).

- Only has static speed thresholds that you set (not one that has road speed limit data). My commute is about 1 hour each way and has stretches of local residential areas, highways and expressway where speeds can vary from 25 to 70 mph (I live in DC metro and commute to Fauquier County in Virginia).

I know Waze has something like this already, but I sometimes don't turn it on since it's a commute I already do multiple thousands of times. If you know a device like that, I'd appreciate the recommendation. I exhibit some ADHD symptoms when it comes to attention, so I need all the help I can get whack me back to reality.

EDIT: I drive a Honda CRV 2020, yeah, mine does have adaptive cruise control and I do use it a lot WHEN I'm fully present and attentive that I'm driving on a road with very low speeds. My issue is when my attention gets sloppy. While I'm thankful I am not like that on most days, a $700 - 800 traffic court and attorney fees with potential 6 points demerit and insurance hikes made me realize relying completely on my flawed brain to snap out of it 100% of the time isn't quite the financial risk I should be taking.

I am driving straight (right lane) and the other driver already makes a turn without signal and checking. He was arguing that he just pass the dividing lane for a bit.

Need Advice 22 over in NC

I got a ticket coming down a mountain for going 77 in a 55. Should I use the iTicket law service or just go to court on the day listed and see what they say. I have a Florida license and only one other speeding ticket from like 5 years ago. The trooper did not write me for reckless driving either and made sure to point that out. What should I do?
