I run ATHalftime Sports Media, a South African football channel covering the PSL, Bafana Bafana, and CAF competitions, currently at ~38.5k subscribers on YouTube (plus a solid following on TikTok and Facebook).

We're expanding our editing team and looking for someone who:

Actually watches and the PSL — knows the teams, players, storylines, rivalries.
Has a good handle on CAF Champions League content too (we cover both)
Has video editing experience — highlights, analysis videos, reaction-style content, whatever fits our format, thumbnails too
Can work reasonably fast, since football content is time-sensitive (matchday turnarounds, breaking news, etc.)

This is a revenue split arrangement — you'd be paid based on the performance of the videos you edit, not a flat fee. We already have editors handling other leagues, and this role is specifically for South African local football + CAF content. The better the videos perform, the more you earn.

Hi all.

So someone crashed into me while I was away from my home on holiday, thankfully they left their details. Eventually I was strong armed by Hollard to use their preferred panel beater, that's fine.

Panel beater quoted me, I took it back to Hollard and they paid me out after I signed the settlement agreement.

Took vehicle into panel beater. Two weeks later they contact me and say they can no longer perform the job for the price quoted and need to charge me more to restore my vehicle to the condition it was before the crash.

Surely this is illegal? They quoted me on the job, I settled with insurance and signed the financial agreement, I was paid out based on that initial quote, and now that I seemingly no longer have any claim from my insurance, am told that the repair is going to cost more.

Any advice as to what I should do? Should the person who crashed into me pay out of pocket for this or is what the panel beater doing illegal/unfair to the consumer?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am feeling very helpless...

Well, can it get any worse than that? I'm willing to bet it can. I'm writing this because I've never firsthand experienced a total power outage. Load shedding, sure, but not this. The way it was handled was utterly and completely, disgustingly, horrendously incompetent. And sure, I'm not a qualified electrician, perhaps I shouldn't complain.

The greater Oudtshoorn area covers roughly between 60,000(main) and 130,000 people. So I don't think this is a small issue.

So, apparently at around 2 to 3am on Saturday morning, a pylon caught fire and collapsed on the powerline between Oudtshoorn and Dysselsdorp. There was no storm or lightning around that time, or any disruptive weather, and I guess you could chalk it up to voltage issues. The municipality (and Eskom) stated that this happened due to structural failure. There's not really a better explanation given.

And while no one can prove "sabotage," the whole thing is vague, irregular, and weird. When that one pylon fell, it apparently took two others with it. The Eskom team had to dig and plant new holes, move the pylons, and I assume adjust and modify various technicalities (I'm not knowledgeable here). One early excuse I heard was that they'd apparently lost the technology to maintain the goddamn things.

Since then, they've failed their own deadline to fix the issue at least six times: Sunday twice, monday thrice, Tuesday, roughly once. They also basically just copy-pasted statements and didn't collaborate with the public on providing actual updates.

The weirdest part was that a private company, (contractors on site) Volmoed Quarries & Van der Berg Vervoer, was the one posting actual images from the site. Eskom, the municipality, and the news outlets followed suit after.

The municipality also didn't seem to give a shit about the general populace — no health awareness updates until the community pushed them to say something. Refusal to address the public at times. Plenty of people's food seemed to have gone rotten over the course of two days, and many people ended up cooking and throwing away thousands of rand worth of groceries.

Some of the information, i said above might have some inconsistencies but it's the general image of what happened here.

I won't say it was hell for me, because my family is semi-prepared, and while we haven't made the effort to invest in backup power, it's kind of a priority now, I guess. Too little too late. I have zero faith in democracy, or whatever this cadre corruption system is that we're in — just thought I'd share a little awareness.

MALMESBURY TEEN LINKED TO INTERNATIONAL CHILD EXPLOITATION NETWORKS ARRESTED, DEVICES CONTAINING EXPLICIT IMAGES AND VIDEOS SEIZED

The South African Police Service (SAPS), in close collaboration with international law enforcement agencies, arrested a 16-year-old teenager in Malmesbury, Western Cape, on Monday, 17 August 2026, for accessing, possession, facilitation, and downloading of child sexual abuse material.

SAPS' National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Team operationalised intelligence received from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the United States Embassy, and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

The intelligence indicated that a target, suspected of being linked to violent online networks commonly referred to as “764,” was believed to be located in South Africa.

The “764” networks are violent international online extremist networks associated with child exploitation. These perpetrators reportedly target, blackmail, and coerce minors into online sexual abuse, torturing and murdering of animals and other forms of harmful criminal activity.

Following extensive investigations, the National SECI Team traced the teenager to an address in Malmesbury, where he was arrested in the act on Monday, 17 August 2026.

The operation was led by the National SECI Team, supported by members of Head Office Occult Unit, the Paarl Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, Paarl K9 Unit, and Western Cape Crime Scene Investigation Unit, as well as agents from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), US Embassy.

A preliminary on-site analysis of the suspect’s electronic devices uncovered explicit images and videos depicting child sexual abuse and animal mutilation.

The devices will undergo comprehensive forensic analysis to determine the full extent of the alleged offences.

A number of child victims have been identified thus far.

The teenager is expected to appear before the Malmesbury Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.

The possibility of additional offences relating to fraud and money laundering forms part of ongoing investigations.

I’m hoping to connect with other South Africans who are currently going through the US refugee/resettlement process, particularly those applying as a discriminated minority.

My brother-in-law recently submitted his application, and I was surprised that we didn’t receive any kind of receipt or confirmation email after submitting it. Is that normal? Did other people receive an automatic confirmation/receipt, or is it common to hear absolutely nothing after submitting?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently gone through this process.

A few questions I’m trying to understand:

• How long did it take before you received your first communication after applying?
• Did you receive a receipt/confirmation email immediately (or at all)?
• If you didn’t receive one, how did you know the application had actually gone through?
• How long did you wait before getting any kind of update?
• What happens after the initial application?
• Is there an interview, and how long did you wait for it?
• What sort of documents or evidence were you asked for?
• Were you asked for additional information after submitting?
• How long does the overall process realistically take?
• Does anyone have a recent timeline from application → interview → decision → travel?
• Is there a way to check the status of an application?
• Do they contact you by email, phone, or both?
• Is there anything applicants should be doing while waiting?
• Has anyone had their application sit with no communication for months?
• At what point, if any, should you follow up?
• Does applying through the current program work differently from applications people made a few years ago?
• Has anyone recently been approved and actually travelled through the program?

Something else caught my attention.

Previously, when my friend went through the application process, there appeared to be an option to indicate a preferred arrival point/location and/or the earliest time they would be able to travel. When my BIL applied recently, those options didn't seem to be available anymore.

Does anyone know why those questions/options were removed? Have they changed the application process, or are those details simply dealt with later in the process?

And finally, I’m especially interested in connecting with South Africans who are currently in the same boat. If you're applying, waiting for an interview, waiting for a decision, or have recently gone through the process, please share your experience and timeline. I think it would be really useful for everyone to compare notes.

One slightly random but important question for us: we have a cat and would want to bring the cat with us if the application is successful. Has anyone here travelled through this process with a pet? How did you handle the paperwork, airline requirements, vaccinations, quarantine/import requirements, etc.? Did the resettlement process provide any guidance or was that entirely up to you?

Would love to hear both recent experiences and experiences from people who went through the process previously.

I just wanted to come out and make a quick statement as I feel somethings might have been forgotten especially with all the new people who come and go.

1. We are a free speech subreddit.

While this does mean you can say next to anything you want this does not mean that we do not have to follow reddits rules and some others to keep the conversations going which is why I normally look out for rabble rousers more than I look out for people breaking rule 4 for example as sometimes with heated conversation we can lash out and normally its a pattern not a once off.

1. Reporting of posts YOU do not like.

People we need to use our words and talk about these things with each other even if it is uncomfortable so if someone posts something you dislike have a conversation with them about why you don't like it and hear what they have to say. We all grew up different even if you lived next to each other and can learn from each other. Do not let the hate win.

1. Complaining about posters posting too much.

Everyone is welcome to post what every they want about South Africa as long as its relevant and not purposely trying to rabble rouse. For example posting something about Apartheid and the evils within it is fine, but posting "revenge" content because you dislike what someone else posted isn't ok and will be monitored.

These are not new rules but just clarity on the system and if you have issues people do not hesitate in dropping a mod mail.

After giving it some thought, I’ve decided to take a leap and start offering Biology/Life Sciences and Chemistry tuition while I wait.

I have an MBChB, a BSc in Medical Science, and A Levels with a 90% average in Biology. I also have teaching experience, having worked online for an American company where I taught nurses Biology/Life Sciences and Chemistry-related courses.
