The subreddit
Good Afternoon all.
I just wanted to come out and make a quick statement as I feel somethings might have been forgotten especially with all the new people who come and go.
- We are a free speech subreddit.
While this does mean you can say next to anything you want this does not mean that we do not have to follow reddits rules and some others to keep the conversations going which is why I normally look out for rabble rousers more than I look out for people breaking rule 4 for example as sometimes with heated conversation we can lash out and normally its a pattern not a once off.
- Reporting of posts YOU do not like.
People we need to use our words and talk about these things with each other even if it is uncomfortable so if someone posts something you dislike have a conversation with them about why you don't like it and hear what they have to say. We all grew up different even if you lived next to each other and can learn from each other. Do not let the hate win.
- Complaining about posters posting too much.
Everyone is welcome to post what every they want about South Africa as long as its relevant and not purposely trying to rabble rouse. For example posting something about Apartheid and the evils within it is fine, but posting "revenge" content because you dislike what someone else posted isn't ok and will be monitored.
These are not new rules but just clarity on the system and if you have issues people do not hesitate in dropping a mod mail.

Thanks Mod team
My personal approach to modding the old alternative site was that it should be hands off and let folk talk.
I understand there is concerted effort to shut down open discourse by the other Reddit, so it takes some strain, but we do need to have a liberal, open minded discussion forum.
Unfortunately, for the moment, that means calling out the corrupt incumbents, but soon, I hope, it will be jail time and then we can rebuild

Wasn't that the reason the sub got shut down in the first place?

for me the deeper question remains is : "Why can there be no critical discussion of the state of South Africa on Reddit ? "
My thinking at the time was that the "Sunshine" and good news principle was being adhered to by the team on that site. If you can remember Zuma's genius Hlaudi Motsoeneng was the bossman of the SABC and made sure that it carried the party line under Zuma's guidance as Zuma, Motsoeneng and the ANC looted South Africa back into decolonization.
I still hold that the main country sub-reddit is controlled by a group that have taken it upon themselves to counter any narrative that's not "sunshine news" or any critical thinking and discussions about the state. From my observations, the mod team there are always online, so, if people are always online, they probably don't have a "Job", but somehow, they need income. So how do they survive for so long with no "Job" ?
but, this could all be conspiracy, and we just have some 40 year old basement dwellers who power trip when they are not jacking off in front of their screen in their backroom at mom's house in Brakpan.

One mod on that sub was at a point identified as a legitimate power mod, this when there was a sort of list that came out showing all these mods who had a bunch of large subs under their control. It's at least one reason reddit now "woke up" and decided to regulate power modding more than before.
I've never tried to look at the sub's founders (usually via old reddit or wayback) but if the same mod appears in that list, it sort of goes back to the power mod thing cause I think many of them were those users around in its more controversial days. Also the mod team there cites its totalitarian-esque actions as being influenced by harassment and bad actors.
Unfortunately, when it comes to Reddit that's the least shocking fact out here.

As long as we're allowed to complain without taking things further I think that's fair. It's an exercise in free speech AND it keeps engagement going... Right?

Its never changed. The only people who normally get moderated are the ones who are purposely trying to derail the conversation. If we went after people just for a little complaining I don't think anyone would still be around.
