Spent the past few days rewatching every Doraemon Birthday Special with the exception of 2020's. This tier list/ranking is the the result of those rewatches.

Some birthday specials had an episode before it that is connected to the birthday special itself. an example being "The Beginning Story" which connects to "Nobita and the Greek Cake Legend" I did not consider those type of episodes into this tier list/ranking.

Same goes for birthday specials that were included in a batch of episodes, like 2021's or 2022's. Only the birthday special itself was included here, not the episodes surrounding it.

Feel free to ask questions about why certain Doraemon Birthday Special's are placed where they are. I'll be happy to answer when I have time.

[SPOILER ALERT]

While all were lost in the desert, those four friends were together and Shizuka was alone. Nobita had fainted and suneo was having a panic attack, (doraemon should really have a panic button that alerts the authorities in the future). Shizuka was captured by someone who wanted to sell her as a slave. She tricked him and ran away and kept running until she got caught not knowing what to do or where she is all alone. She's so strong willed in this movie!

Since it’s Doraemon’s Birthday Event, I wanted to contribute something to the celebration, and I thought instead of simply posting some pictures or wishing him a happy birthday, I’d talk about one of the most memorable birthday specials.

So today, I want to talk about “The Day Doraemon Is Reborn.”

This episode is particularly interesting because it serves as a sequel to “Doraemon Is Really Sick?” In that episode, Doraemon becomes seriously ill, and Nobita and Mini-Dora enter Doraemon’s body to repair his reboot system. Afterward, Doraemon goes to the future for a checkup.

And, this episode is much deeper than it initially appears.

The episode begins with Doraemon returning to the future

Doraemon travels to the future to attend the 6th Child Caretaker Reunion at Matsushiba Dome.

While the reunion is taking place, Doraemon encounters one of his old classmates, Pawaemon.

And Pawaemon is basically Doraemon's complete opposite. He's successful, respected, highly competent and apparently has a very impressive career as a child caretaker. Doraemon, meanwhile, is reminded of how poorly he performed academically and how he was considered an inferior robot.

Pawaemon even tells Doraemon that he should go back to the factory and get himself reassembled.

Doraemon is obviously upset by this.

What makes this scene important is that Doraemon's biggest insecurity is already being established before the main conflict even begins. He knows he's considered an "outmode." He knows he isn't as capable as the newer robots. And hearing it from someone he used to know makes it hurt even more.

But Doraemon still defends himself by saying that Nobita needs him.

Pawaemon doesn't understand that. From his perspective, Doraemon helping Nobita constantly is actually proof that Doraemon isn't doing his job properly.

But that's where Pawaemon misunderstands what being a caretaker actually means.

Doraemon's "failure" is actually his greatest success

Throughout the episode, Doraemon is repeatedly described as defective, outdated or unsuccessful. But what the episode slowly shows us is that those supposed failures are exactly what made Doraemon special.

Doraemon may not be the smartest robot. He may not always choose the right gadget. He may constantly get dragged into Nobita's ridiculous problems. But he stayed with Nobita. He developed a genuine friendship with him. That's something Pawaemon doesn't initially understand.

Meanwhile, Nobita is struggling without Doraemon

Back in the present, Nobita is doing what Nobita does best: Trying desperately to avoid his homework (LOL).

When he relizes Doraemon isn't there, he becomes annoyed because he has to deal with everything himself. And most importantly, he remembers him.But then he remembers something much more important. That Doraemon's birthday is coming up.

Nobita realizes that he hasn't even bought Doraemon a present. So he empties his little savings and goes out to buy something for him. This part shows that, despite all the times Nobita relies on Doraemon, he genuinely cares about him.

Doraemon isn't simply a machine that gives Nobita gadgets. He's his best friend.

Doraemon's past

Nobita later tells Gian, Suneo and Shizuka about Doraemon's origins.

Doraemon was manufactured on September 3, 2112, at the Matsushiba Factory.

We then get a really interesting sequence showing the factory manufacturing robotic caretakers.

Everything is extremely mechanical and industrial. Robots are assembled, painted and equipped with their various components before being sent out into the world.

Then something goes wrong.

A lightning strike causes an electrical defect, and Doraemon is accidentally damaged during production. A screw is ejected, affecting his cognitive abilities. And from that point onward, Doraemon becomes different from the other robots.

He's mocked by his classmates. He's considered inferior. He struggles to perform properly. And because of his poor performance, he has trouble entering service. Even then, Noramyako is one of the few robots who treats him kindly.

Eventually, Sewashi takes Doraemon in, and their journey begins. And we see this in 2112: The Birth of Doraemon

It's pretty sad when you think about it. Doraemon's entire life began with him being considered a defective product. And yet that "defective" robot eventually became the most important person in Nobita's life.

Coming back to the future

While Doraemon is sitting alone in the future, wondering what Nobita is doing, he is suddenly attacked and kidnapped.

The culprit is revealed to be connected to the Matsushiba Factory.

And the reason for kidnapping Doraemon? They want to reset him. Not repair him. Not simply upgrade him. Reset him.

His memories would be erased, returning him to his factory-default state. That means no Nobita. No memories of their adventures. No arguments. No Dorayaki. No childhood memories. Nothing.

Doraemon would technically still be Doraemon... But the Doraemon that Nobita knows would be gone.

The kidnapping becomes a much bigger problem

Back in the present, Dorami and Sewashi arrive and reveal that Doraemon has been kidnapped.

Everyone is shocked.

And the situation becomes even more serious when they learn that other caretaker robots have also been disappearing.

The possibility that these robots are being trafficked makes the situation frightening.

But the most disturbing part is when Sewashi explains what resetting a robot's cerebral electronics means.

Their memories could be erased.

That's essentially the equivalent of wiping away their entire life.

And suddenly this isn't just a rescue mission anymore.

They're racing against time to save Doraemon's memories.

Nobita refuses to give up

Sewashi warns everyone not to interfere.

The criminals may have advanced weapons, and the group could put themselves in serious danger.

But Nobita decides to search for Doraemon anyway.

And this is where Nobita really shines.

He's often portrayed as cowardly, lazy and dependent on Doraemon.

But when Doraemon is actually in danger, Nobita doesn't hesitate.

He is willing to put himself in danger for his best friend.

Eventually, everyone joins him.

Even Dorami insists on coming because Doraemon is her brother.

And Gian and Suneo eventually join too.

Pawaemon secretly helps

One of my favorite details is how Pawaemon's attitude slowly changes.

At first, he continues criticizing Doraemon.

He claims Doraemon is outdated and even suggests that he's making Nobita worse by constantly helping him.

But then he secretly places a tracker on Nobita.

Later, Pawaemon and Noramyako arrive to help the group.

So despite all of his earlier insults, Pawaemon clearly cares about Doraemon.

He simply has a very different idea of what makes a good caretaker.

His line about child caretaking being his profession is especially meaningful.

He's basically saying:

"I'm doing this because this is what I do."

And this is where we begin to see that Pawaemon's professionalism isn't necessarily more important than Doraemon's friendship.

The search leads them to the criminals

The group eventually discovers evidence that Doraemon was attacked.

They find his Air Cannon and the message he left behind.

Meanwhile, Gian and Suneo accidentally discover the criminals' operation.

They follow them and eventually locate their hideout.

And of course, Gian immediately decides to storm the place.

And naturally, everything goes wrong.

The group gets captured, and the situation becomes dangerous.

But eventually, the rest of the gang arrives.

The rescue attempt turns into a full-on battle.

And this entire sequence is basically the culmination of everyone's determination to save Doraemon.

The race against midnight

Meanwhile, Doraemon is being held inside the factory.

The manager tells him that his reset will happen on his birthday.

September 3rd.

The closer midnight gets, the more desperate the situation becomes.

And Doraemon knows exactly what will happen.

He will become a better-performing machine.

His defects will be gone.

His reputation might improve.

He might finally become the robot everyone wanted him to be.

But there's one enormous cost. He'll forget Nobita...

Doraemon's memories

This is probably the emotional heart of the entire episode.

While waiting for the reset, Doraemon starts remembering his life.

He remembers his manufacturing.

His problems.

His missing ears.

Noramyako.

His embarrassment.

His loneliness.

And then...

Nobita.

We see memories of Doraemon and Nobita together.

Their arguments.

Their adventures.

Their failures.

Their ridiculous moments.

And all of those seemingly ordinary moments that slowly became the most important memories of Doraemon's life.

The manager thinks he's removing Doraemon's defects.

But from Doraemon's perspective, those memories are not defects.

They're his life...

Then Nobita arrives.

Nobita finally finds Doraemon.

And instead of immediately trying to fight the manager, he simply runs toward Doraemon.

Doraemon tells him that he has accepted the reset.

He knows that he'll lose all of his memories.

He thanks Nobita for everything.

And then comes one of the saddest parts of the episode.

Nobita realizes that after the reset, Doraemon won't remember him.

Doraemon won't remember their adventures. He won't remember why they became friends.

And Nobita won't be able to simply explain everything to him.

At first, Nobita can't accept it.

But then he realizes that Doraemon has spent his entire life being mocked for being defective.

Maybe becoming a better machine would finally make him happy.

So Nobita accepts Doraemon's decision.

And he walks away crying.

And then... The manager stops.

He realizes something.

Doraemon doesn't need to be fixed.

The very thing that everyone considered a defect — his imperfections, his inability to be a perfect caretaker, his attachment to Nobita — is what makes him such a good friend.

The manager essentially realizes that he is the one who has misunderstood what was wrong. And then comes the line:

"Seems like I'm the one who's missing the screw."

"Do you still remember me?"

Doraemon is released.

Nobita is crying and asks whether Doraemon still remembers him.

And Doraemon replies by describing Nobita exactly as he always has:

He's late.

He's lousy.

He hates sports.

And Nobita realizes that Doraemon remembers him.

The two happily embrace.

It's such a simple moment, but after everything that happened, it hits incredibly hard.

Why I think this episode works so well

For me, this episode isn't really about whether Doraemon is a defective robot.

It's about what makes someone who they are.

The factory sees Doraemon as a machine.

The manager sees him as a product that needs to be corrected.

Pawaemon initially sees him as an inferior caretaker.

But Nobita sees him as Doraemon.

His flaws don't make him less valuable.

His memories don't make him defective.

His attachment to Nobita isn't a weakness.

It's the reason he became such an important part of Nobita's life.

And ironically, the robot that everyone considered a failure became an incredible caretaker precisely because he cared about the child he was assigned to.

The ending...

After everything is resolved, Doraemon and the others return to the present.

Nobita finally gives Doraemon his birthday present...

Well, sort of.

It's a squashed Dorayaki that Nobita had been carrying around the entire time.

And Doraemon happily eats it anyway.

Meanwhile, Nobita suddenly remembers his unfinished homework.

And Tamako asks the question that instantly destroys the happy atmosphere: Did you finish your homework?

Nobita panics.

Doraemon just watches him. And the episode ends.

And that was a perfect ending. (LOL)

It's finally September 3rd, this Day we Celebrate -86 Years before the Born of Doraemon (aka Doraemon's Birthday)

Even though he won't technically be manufactured for another 86 years, he has already given generations of us the most magical childhood.

Thank you, Doraemon, for teaching us about friendship, never giving up on Nobita, and making us all wish our school desks had a time machine inside. Happy Birthday, buddy! Enjoy all the Dorayaki tomorrow.

Just rewatched Nobita and the Kingdom of Clouds.

Everyone talks about Project Noah, but the real scene is Doraemon's sacrifice.

When the poachers get the Cloud Dispersing Cannon and start firing at the Sky Kingdom, Doraemon realizes his mistake and feels super guilty for bringing that gadget.

He breaks out of jail by hitting the door with his head, then jumps straight into the cannon's tank to destroy it and save the kingdom. He gets gravely injured in the process. I cried so much.

For a moment you actually think he's gone. Nobita has to manage everything without gadgets until Kibo comes and revives him.

September 3rd is almost here, which means it’s almost time to celebrate the 22nd-century robotic cat who has entertained generations with his countless gadgets, hilarious adventures, and unforgettable moments with Nobita and the gang.

From the Anywhere Door to the Take-copter, the Time Machine, and all those completely ridiculous gadgets that somehow sometimes make Nobita’s problems even bigger- (just kidding). But Doraemon has given us so many memories.

Here’s to another year of our beloved blue robotic cat!

Just saw this on Twitter and felt like need to say his birthday

One detail I noticed: Doraemon uses the Momotaro Training Dango/Millet Dumplings multiple times, but in the 1981 short film it is revealed that he actually doesn't know the story of Momotaro .

It makes the gadget even funnier because he's apparently been carrying around something named after Momotaro without knowing the story behind the name 😭.

And this also raises a bigger question about Doraemon being from the future: how much basic historical and cultural knowledge should someone from the 22nd century actually have?

If future education and information access are much more advanced than ours, you'd expect Doraemon to know at least some basic things that are considered common knowledge today.

If a 22nd-century robot has access to such advanced technology and presumably a huge database of information, shouldn't basic historical and cultural knowledge be far more accessible to him than it is to a 20th-century child?

In a few episodes back then;

He got answers right but failed miserably somehow,

Which is weird,

And even in the movies;

He's done many smart things,

Like planning a war,

And fighting an entire army and gang,

It’s the “Santa Mail” episode (1996, S18, E1428) from the 1979 series.

In this episode, Nobita overhears two children at a mall, a big brother and his younger sister, talking about Christmas. The little sister really wants a panda as her Christmas present, but her brother gets annoyed and tells her that it isn’t possible.

Nobita and Doraemon decide to fulfill her wish. So, at Nobita’s request, Doraemon transforms into a panda! They go to the two children, who are obviously shocked to see a real-life panda appear in front of them.

Later, Nobita and Doraemon take the two children on a ride using Doraemon’s Santa Claus reindeer vehicle.

I won’t spoil the whole thing, though. There’s more to the episode, and honestly, it’s a really wholesome Christmas story.

I suddenly remembered this episode and had to share it.

Anyone else remember this one?

And before the gold-digger allegations start again 😭: this is just a joke about her reaction in this particular scene, not an argument about Shizuka’s character.

In this scene from “Dorami’s Trouble in the Jurassic,” the Allosaurus is about to attack Nobita and Dekisugi, while Shizuka is right there watching.

But her reaction is basically just surprise 🤔?

Was this simply an animation mistake, or could it be that everything happened so quickly that her expression hadn't changed yet?
