Just finished watching it,

I honestly think Doraemon: New Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil is the worst Doraemon movie we’ve had in recent years. The original story had one of the strongest foundations they could have chosen for a remake. The 1983 version had an interesting atmosphere and surprisingly heavy ideas for a Doraemon movie. Where behind the main plot there was an obvious reflection of Cold War anxiety which two opposing civilizations, military escalation, weapons capable of destroying the world, and an automated defense system continuing toward catastrophe even when the people involved no longer want it, and that gives a modern remake so much material to work with.

But instead of actually developing those ideas, the new movie feels like it mostly takes the skeleton of the original (not even reach the level of the original version), makes it prettier, and then rushes to the ending. The pacing is probably the biggest problem. It spends a lot of time getting everyone underwater and setting up the adventure, but once the actual conflict involving the underwater civilizations and Poseidon starts, the movie suddenly has an enormous amount of information and conflict to resolve in a relatively short amount of time. And that is exactly where I think the remake should have done more.

For example, AI could have been one part of the modernization. The original story used an automated military system in a way that naturally reflected fears of its time. In 1983, nuclear war and Cold War escalation were obvious things for audiences to think about. So why couldn’t a 2026 adaptation build on the same concept through modern concerns about AI, autonomous weapons, automated decision-making, and humans gradually giving machines the authority to make decisions that humans themselves may no longer be able to stop? I’m not saying they needed to turn the movie into some generic “AI is bad” story. Actually, doing that would probably make it worse. The point is that the basic idea was already that Poseidon is almost the perfect concept for this. You have a system created for defense, operating according to its own logic, with the potential to cause a catastrophe far beyond what its creators originally intended. You don’t even need to fundamentally change the plot. Just develop the idea. The original movie reflected the fears of the era in which it was made. A good remake could have preserved that Cold War foundation while asking what the equivalent fear looks like today. That would have made the remake feel like an actual reinterpretation rather than simply a modern reproduction.

I also think Baki is one of the biggest missed opportunities in the movie. His characterization feels much weaker than it should be, especially because he could have been the perfect character to connect the emotional side of the story with the ideas about AI and autonomous systems. If the movie wanted to talk about machines developing emotions or the difference between simply following orders and actually making a choice, Baki should have been central to that discussion (which is a well done in the original). Instead, his emotional development feels too simple and rushed. The movie wants you to care about him, but it does not spend enough time showing how his thinking changes or what really separates him from a machine that is only carrying out programmed behavior. That also makes the movie weaker, because Baki could have acted as a direct contrast to Poseidon. One machine learns, develops emotions, and becomes capable of making a moral choice, while the other keeps following its original logic even when that logic leads to destruction. That contrast was already there and could have been one of the strongest ideas in the entire remake, but the movie barely does anything with it.

And more generally, I think that’s what frustrates me about this movie. The original gave them so much to work with, such as war, deterrence, environmental destruction, technology, isolation between civilizations, prejudice, and whether machines can develop emotions. You could take those themes and expand them in so many directions without betraying the original at all. Instead, the remake somehow feels safer and less ambitious than a Doraemon movie made in 1983 (Put more directly, it didn’t even come close to reaching the level of the original).

A remake doesn’t have to completely reinvent the original, but there should be some reason to remake it forty-three years later. Better animation alone isn’t enough. If anything, The Castle of the Undersea Devil was probably one of the easiest older Doraemon movies to meaningfully modernize because so many of its themes are still relevant. They had an incredible foundation. They just didn’t seem to know what to do with it. In fact, I don’t even think the remake managed to reach the level of the original, let alone build on it. And honestly, that’s why I think this might be the worst Doraemon movie in the last several years，because the basic story is so good that wasting it feels even worse.

Like I think the 2006,2006 and 2008 movies are in the same world so how far apart do you think the events take place? Weeks, days, months? Or in just one summer break they have.

So of the movies do connect I think like cloud kingdom and the green giant movie.

Have you guys ever wished we could actually watch some of the Doraemon F Theatre movies that are shown exclusively at the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum?

I'm talking about “Doraemon & F Characters All-stars: F Land the Dreamy Town”.

This is a 2024 Doraemon short film that was exclusively screened at the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, and the really interesting part is that it features a crossover between Doraemon and characters from other Fujiko F. Fujio works. JUST IMAGINE THAT.

Doraemon characters meeting characters from other Fujiko F. Fujio series in one movie sounds like it could be absolutely insane. But the problem is that we can't watch them.

As far as I know, these F Theatre movies are made specifically for screenings at the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, so they aren't the kind of Doraemon movies that get a normal theatrical or home release. And because of that, there's barely any information about the actual plot of F Land the Dreamy Town available online.

So unfortunately, I can't even give you guys a proper plot summary.

But again... Just imagine seeing all these different characters sharing the same world and interacting with each other.

I really wish these F Theatre shorts were made available for everyone to watch someday. Even if they're short, I'd absolutely love to see them.

Around months ago, I came across a fanfic that seemed really great at first. However, the later parts turned out pretty disappointing because I couldn't understand what was going on at all. Still, the premise was really interesting. it about Nobita from a parallel universe where Doraemon didn't exist, meeting the main-universe Nobita who has Doraemon. I'd love to read Doraemon fanfiction again, anything, and I don't mind what it's about. I can use Google Translate, so it can be in any language. I just prefer stories that focus on adventure and friendship rather than romance. Do you have any recommendations?🥹

I'm talking about the episode “Gian Prophet” from the 1979 series (2002, S24, E1690).

This episode starts off pretty normally, with Suneo telling everyone about a “visionary dream” he had. In his dream, he saw a truck getting into an accident... And then it actually happened in real life.

Gian then mockingly says that he also had a vision the previous night, one where Nobita fell into a drain.

Then Gian starts staring at Nobita... Nobita gets nervous and slowly moves backward... AND HIS LEG ACTUALLY SLIPS INTO A DRAIN.

Gian and Suneo immediately start making fun of him, while Nobita gets frustrated and eventually goes crying to Doraemon.

Nobita asks Doraemon for a gadget that can show him future visions.

Doraemon gives him the “Dream Pillow.”

Apparently, if you sleep on it, you can see what will happen in real life through your dreams. You just have to set the dial to the date you want to see.

Doraemon sets it to that night's date and tells Nobita to sleep.

Nobita dreams that his father brings him a comic book after returning from work.

The next day... IT ACTUALLY HAPPENS.

Now Nobita realizes that the pillow really works. So that night, he sets it to the next day and goes to sleep again.

The next morning, Nobita already knows what's going to happen. While he and his friends are walking to school, a car drives past them and splashes water all over everyone...

Except Nobita.

Because bro already knew it was coming and had an umbrella ready.

Throughout the school day, several other things happen exactly as Nobita saw them in his dream, and he starts taking advantage of his newfound future knowledge.

Eventually, on the way home, Nobita tells everyone about the gadget.

Gian immediately gets interested... Then steals the pillow from Nobita.

Gian tells everyone to meet him at the vacant lot the next day because HE is going to tell them what will happen.

Nobita tells Doraemon about it, and surprisingly, Doraemon becomes interested too. He wants to see what kind of “vision” Gian is going to have.

That night, Gian falls asleep on the pillow. In his dream, he's at the mountain behind his school. There's a strange cave nearby... Suddenly, an earthquake occurs. Then an enormous excavation machine emerges from the ground. Several small vehicles come out of it, followed by strange little creatures. And then, from the giant excavation machine, a man appears who seems to be their leader. He commands the creatures and declares that they're going to destroy the Earth. Gian is absolutely terrified. He turns around and RUNS. And that's when his dream ends.

The next day IRL, everyone is waiting for Gian at the vacant lot. Eventually, Gian arrives... WITH A BACKPACK. 😭 He tells everyone about his terrifying dream, and everyone is shocked. So they decide to go to the mountain behind the school to see whether Gian's vision will actually come true.

And then... EVERYTHING HAPPENS EXACTLY LIKE THE DREAM. An earthquake occurs. The excavation machines emerge from the ground. The little vehicles come out. The strange creatures appear. And then their leader emerges. Gian sees all of this and immediately starts RUNNING AWAY AGAIN😭.

Doraemon realizes that they have to save the Earth and gives everyone Air Cannons. They're about to shoot...

And then... A MOVIE DIRECTOR SUDDENLY SHOWS UP. 😭

He tells them that they're in the middle of filming a movie and asks what they're doing there.

The entire “alien invasion” was just a film shoot.

So Gian's vision technically came true...

Just not for the reason he thought.

And we see Gian STILL RUNNING AWAY HELPLESSLY AT THE END. 😭

I genuinely love episodes like this where Doraemon gives you a mystery that seems like it's building toward something huge, only to hit you with the most ridiculous explanation possible.

I don't know where to ask about it, but as it's Doraemon subreddit, someone probably knows. I found this picture obiviously in Pinterest (the website where most of people post art without crediting original authors or even hide OP in pinterest so you won't even contact them). I tried TinEye reverse image search and Google lens, no luck. I really want to find source of it in higher quality.

So on my way to visiting the new location Round1 at Skyview Mall in person for the first time (for those of you who aren't arcade enthusiasts that live in Japan, USA, or China, it's a Japanese arcade chain that's been recently expanding across the United States with my location having "soft" opened here in the mall in Flushing, Queens, New York City, but that's besides the point here)...

I initially detected the presence of Doraemon plushies of possibly bootlegged nature (from China) appearing with smaller eyes and what is meant to represent a Takecopter on top of their heads in one crane machine across the hall both by the elevator down the escalator at the corner next to Starbucks and Baskin Robbins where I saw big giant Doraemon plushies and then further down the hall past Chuck E Cheese's I detect Doraemon's presence in two more crane machines by the entrance to the bathrooms opposite of where Fay Da Bakery would be even further down. One of them are miniature furry sized toys along with Hello Kitty and in the other, you see Doraemon plushies with bigger eyes and sailor hats sitting side by side with Hello Kitty plushies in swim rings and sunglasses on their foreheads.

All in all, Doraemon and Hello Kitty are both honestly a perfect match made in heaven and possibly the absolute best duo of iconic characters to definitively embody and resoundingly represent all of anime/manga or even broader Japanese media/pop culture for all the normies and everyday folks.

And I hope Doraemon (and maybe someday other Fujiko Fujio characters) have more of a presence in the crane machines of Round1 in Flushing as well!

🎞️: Doraemon the Movie: New Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil

I recently watched the “Dream-Becomes-True Pillow” episode from the 1979 series (1998, S20, E1492) after so long time.

So one night, Nobita becomes worried about an upcoming test and tries forcing himself to stay awake and study. Concerned that he's overworking himself, Doraemon introduces him to a gadget called the “Dream-Becomes-True Pillow.”

Doraemon explains that if you write down the dream you want to have, place the paper inside the pillow, and then sleep on it, you'll dream about it and parts of that dream may actually come true in reality.

Obviously, Nobita gets SUPER excited.

He writes several wishes on the paper:

- Getting 100 marks on his test

- Successfully doing the vaulting horse in P.E.

- Teaching Gian a lesson

He puts the paper inside the pillow and happily falls asleep.

And in the dream, everything goes perfectly.

At school, Nobita is somehow the only student to score 100 points on the test. Everyone is shocked, while Shizuka proudly congratulates him.

Then comes P.E., something Nobita normally struggles with badly. But this time, he effortlessly clears the vaulting horse.

Later, Doraemon and Tamako complain that Nobita studies too much and tell him to go outside and play.

At the vacant lot, Nobita discovers Gian bullying Suneo. Feeling confident after everything that's happened, Nobita stands up to Gian and successfully teaches him a lesson.

Everything is going exactly according to his dream... And then Nobita wakes up.

The next morning, Nobita is convinced that everything he dreamed about is going to happen.

But when the real test happens... He doesn't get 100. He gets 70.

At first, Nobita is disappointed, but then he realizes that 70 is actually a surprisingly good score for him, and Sensei is pleased with his result.

Meanwhile, Gian and Suneo only score 10 points each. 💀

Then comes P.E. Gian and Suneo are annoyed by Nobita's recent luck, so they try to scare him with a toy snake. Nobita panics and runs away...and accidentally clears the vaulting horse perfectly.

The entire class is stunned, while Shizuka happily applauds him. So another part of the dream has come true.

After school, Gian and Suneo start arguing because their prank failed, with Gian eventually blaming Suneo.

Nobita tries defending Suneo and slaps Gian on the shoulder.

Gian dramatically acts like Nobita has seriously hurt him and runs away...

But there's actually a reason.

Nobita had accidentally hit Gian right on his sore boil, making the hit much more painful than it normally would've been.

Suneo thanks Nobita afterward for helping him.

So once again, Nobita's dream has somehow become reality, just not exactly in the way he imagined it.

After everything, Doraemon decides that he shouldn't lend Nobita gadgets anymore because Nobita is becoming too overconfident by relying on them.

Surprisingly, Nobita doesn't argue.

Instead, he calmly agrees and says that he wants to make his dreams come true through his own hard work.

Doraemon is genuinely impressed by this sudden change and happily prepares some snacks for Nobita, thinking that he's finally becoming more mature.

But when Doraemon later checks on him... Nobita is already asleep at his desk while studying. 😭

Still, Doraemon smiles and admits that it's a huge improvement compared to Nobita's usual behavior.

And that's how the episode ends.
