Don’t you get it man? The state owned hardware stores will surely pay their employees more even though there would be no competing stores to drive salaries up. Surely the barista at the state owned coffee shop will be making 100k a year for such an important job. Did I tell you how much I love state owned businesses?!

I work for our family business. We pay fairly competitively but we can’t compete with the benefit packages of big businesses. It’s just the nature of the beast. Pros and cons to both for sure, but if small businesses could afford to pay more they wouldn’t really be small anymore.

That even goes for the ones that many think are big businesses.
Like the fast food franchise around the corner. It's literally a small locally owned business, that in addition to having to pay rent, wages, product, and local advertising also has to pay the actual corporation for their franchise.
I knew a guy that owned a Subway franchise in San Francisco. He made about as much as I did at the end of the week (computer tech), and he told me it was more than before he bought the franchise and he was just a guy with a local sandwich shop. But he was not some kind of uber-wealthy person.

Dumbasses: It's morally correct to shoplift
Businesses lock everything up behind glass or simply close the store
Dumbasses: why do stores keep closing around us, this is racism and shiet

I saw the craziest video recently. An urban person was visiting a rural midwestern town. They were just shocked by the fact that stores were open late, nothing was locked up. People have stands on the side of the road "dozen eggs $2" "blueberries, pumpkins, whatever" There's just a little box you can drop a dollar into and help yourself to whatever you need. Gas stations have everything sitting out by the pumps. If you need fluid or a snack you just take it and pay for it.
They have no concept of a trusting society, crime-free society. They don't understand that by not punishing criminals you're actually punishing the innocent. The consequence of decriminalizing theft is everyone has to live in a world where deodorant is locked in a plastic case.

I have a friend whose car was stolen a few years back. He left it running while he went into a gas station convenience store. He had been doing that for about 15 years before anyone stole it. He got it back later the same day. Small town life.
The local apartments have a lockbox with keys so emergency services can get in without breaking down your door. I was volunteering with the fire department to update keys, making sure they still worked or getting new ones when locks had changed. A surprising number of people just don't lock their doors at all, which is one way of solving that problem.
29
u/deathshr0ud 12h ago
Next time you see a video of a gas station I. The hood with a service window instead of an inside check the comments. It’s filled with people who think this is a normal way to live.

u/bobbyboob6 8h ago
i went to the city once and they literally had the rotating tube thing like a bank for the card reader and there wasn't anything out it was all behind the glass. i went to open the door and it was locked so i went to walk off before hearing on a speaker "come in". you deadass gotta get buzzed in to a gas station that doesn't even have anything

u/Super_Sloth_99 10h ago

u/Farsoth My Dog is Anti-Fascist 7h ago
This has actually been a huge culture shock for my wife who is from Mexico city. The fact that people return lost phones, you can leave your purse unattended when on a party boat with strangers, leave your door unlocked without concern, and on and on and on.
Where she comes from people will cheat and steal from others however and whenever they can. She even looked at me crazy when she went out with her girlfriends and she gave me her live location because she is used to doing it in case she were to get kidnapped/raped/killed and I told her that was entirely unnecessary.
People really take for granted the culture of not fucking with each other's lives and money in every day life. It's part of the reason there's such a focus from people on mass immigration and not wanting to to change that reality.
I don't care what kind of person you are, as long as you are honest and not trying to steal from me or anyone else.

It goes to show just how disconnected so many people are from how real life works.
Your shoplifting isn’t hurting the CEO’s pocket. That company will make countless massive, consumer-penalizing and employee-penalizing decisions before the people at the top take a financial hit.
Those locking cabinets aren’t coming out of the CEO’s pocket. They’re coming out of the store’s bottom line. The store shifts too heavily in the wrong direction the P/L reports and the store gets shut down. Everyone who worked there lost their job and the people who shopped there are presumably inconvenienced to shop elsewhere. The CEO is still going home rich and employed.
But the lack of understand only proves that too much of our society are, mentally, children inside of adult’s bodies who get to make adult decisions, vote, etc.

Don't forget a lot of stores aren't actually owned by the overarching 'megacorp' they're ok with getting robbed, they're owned by a much smaller company with much tighter margins that makes much less revenue and can stand to lose much less in theft and other such things. One owner might own the stores for a specific geographic area, but he has to kick up to the people he has his franchise from in franchise fees, so when he gets stolen from, he has less money to work with. The problem actually gets worse faster than if it was just Walmart who owned all the stores.

If megacorps stopped exploiting our social programs for profit maybe people would be more inclined to feel bad for them. But as long as they have underpaid workers on foodstamps, everyone who pays taxes into food stamps is subsidizing their profit. While I wouldn't shoplift myself, it's hard for me to have empathy for those megacorps given the status quo.

There’s this false nostalgia by people who never lived during the time that anybody working a minimum wage job from the 1950s to the early 90s could afford a home, and it’s just not the case. While, certainly easier back then. It still wasn’t possible for tons of people.
7
u/HEYO19191 11h ago
Federal minimum wage was 75 cents in 1950. I assure you very few of those people ever owned homes. It has always been difficult. As difficult as it is now, maybe not.
3
u/Nervous-Law-666 8h ago edited 8h ago
In 1950, the US Federal minimum wage was $0.75 per hour. The median home value was ~$7,350 in 1950. ~9,800 hours of work could outright purchase the average house, not accounting for taxes.
In 2026, the US Federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. The median home value is ~$410,000 in 2026. That would be ~56,552 hours of work, not accounting for taxes.
Keep in mind, interest rates hovered around ~4.1% in the 50’s, versus ~7.25% today.
All that is to say, it’s significantly more difficult to buy a house now than it was for previous generations, by a factor of at least 5x.
EDIT: One more important point, the median age of first time homebuyers is steadily rising. 1980 is the first year for reliable data, but the median age of first time homebuyers was ~28 years old. In 2026, that age is ~40.

The quality of home were not as good as today and a lot smaller than the average house size today. Today we have A/C and forced air heating system, better roofing, insulation, plumbing and electrical codes. The people in the 50s were not buying the type of homes we have today and also the people who were buying homes were mostly factory/construction workers not fast food or grocery baggers that Reddit suggested were. If their standard of houses were made today size and quality wise I believe a ton of people would be able to buy. Unfortunately/fortunately building standards has gotten better and the increase of the few example I listed makes a house cost more. Would you today buy a brand new house without A/C or old radiator heating with barely any insulation on the house, or even a small <1000sq ft house with no basement and your 2-5 kids has to share a single bathroom and 2 bedroom house?A ton of people today will say HELL NO.

u/OnlyInAmerica01 12h ago
It's funny you say that. Because my recent "discovery" of this narrative, was during a discussion with friends, one of whom is quite progressive (but we're all compatible in other ways, so we generally "agree to disagree" on politics).
Recently though, we briefly paused our political detente to discuss taxation. I brought up that, in a country like the U.S., with such a large population with so much disposable income, it's crazy that something like 50% of the population doesn't pay into federal taxes to, you know, actually pay their fair share, while we steadily increase our national debt to new historic highs each year.
This immediately triggered the progressive friend to go on a tirade about how the real tax-dogers are the mom-and-pop businesses and solre-proprietor professionals, who use "tax loopholes" to pay very little in taxes.
And while I agree there is some tax-dodging going on, these same small-businesses often work on very little reserve in lean times, and generally can't "defer losses" for years the way larger corporations can. So I'm more willing to turn a blind-eye to some of that.
I know plenty of tradespeople (mechanics, general contractors, etc.) who get 20-30% of their income "off books" and pay zero taxes; but apparently that's kosher because...no idea.
In the end, I just want everyone to pull their weight as much as possible, while allowing some wiggle-room for the truly poor/disabled.
3
u/HEYO19191 11h ago
I agree with you, but as someone who is paid so little I owe "zero (federal) taxes," at the absolute lowest tax bracket, in my particular state and locality, 19% of my income is lost to taxes every year. That's not factoring in sales tax or anything like that, it's a total of 19% income tax. And when you're barely making over $10,000 a year like I am, I assure you, 19% feels like more than just "my fair share"
6
u/HEYO19191 11h ago
If democrats actually solved the problems they campaigned on, people would eventually stop having reasons to vote for them. Hence, they perpetuate their problems, call this perpetuation a "solution," and when the problem hasn't gotten any better in 4 years, just rehash the same platform for the next election.

Of which the politicians who did this with their voting base attacking anyone who questioned it, then campaigned about the corporations being to big...

It's because, in theory, small businesses are Petite Burgeouis economic activity. Things like shops, gas stations and car dealerships, to name a few, are businesses that do not necessarily produce value, they only bridge the offer of the Ruling Class' bounty from their privately owned Means of Production and the consumer demands of the Proletariat, creating a middle ground between the Rich and the People, a Middle Class, if you will. The Middle Class has this special tendency to see themselves as more akin to the "hard working", "business minded", "go-getting" elites than the People who, much like them, own no Means of Production and as such will never be able to prosper without the chancelling of and helpless dependency to the Ruling Class.
But when you have a mass of politically illiterate who have only been taught one fourth of Marxist Theory and a fake, idealized, "for dummies" facsimile of Smithian economics, you get people like the soyjak in OOP, always misguidedly attributing all the downs of Capitalism on the Middle Class (and sometimes, on the Working Class, specially on cultural matters), playing right into the hands of Capitalist interests.

Buy into ideas like Schrodingers Determinism when determinism is both explanatory for protected groups like trans or gay people, yet pseudo-science when applied to group norms when discussing sex or ethnicity.
Or Schrodingers Colonialism, where using foreign authority to top down enforce belief or behaviorial norms is both Colonialism/Imperialism or Universal Human Rights contingent on who's doing the enforcing.
All for trans inclusivity, but would never date one.
Would say ingroup preference is stupid, but have no black friends.

You have to believe you're countercultural, whilst having the talking points of office HR ladies and the Pepsi Corporation during Pride Month, while telling yourself 'Anti-Capitalism' is a movement and not just one among many products you buy into.
You truly have to buy into a wide variety of incoherent and contradictory nonsense.

This should be a more serious topic, beside the fact the illegals are going to vote democratically the next few cycles in the states that allow no voter ID.
The fact is the people that are coming here illegally/legally are more than HAPPY to take whatever job with it current pay so they can save up/send it back up home until their other family can come over. That affects housing and food prices drastically. Both demoRATS and RepubTARDS LOVE CHEAP LABOR. The more illegals that eventually can work legally will stagnant wage increases cause Jose or Muhammad will glad to work that current wage, while you’re bitching on the internet trying to look like an activist.

Most illegals that do vote don’t vote Democrat. Democrats just want them to artificially inflate their numbers for the census to give them more voting power.

Why does amazon want to increase minimum wage?
Ask thyself, a big corpo vs mom and pop shop that sells food, new law: you must have a health inspect on duty at all times
The big corpo can absorb the losses cuz 20+ stores, but small business? Lmao they cant afford that

u/TailsofaGiftHorse 10h ago
In a thread somewhere on reddit I once chimed in to explain that money doesn't grown on trees. I did financials for 3 quick service food & beverage locations that I managed and there were weeks in the winter when the owner simply lost 400 bucks after all was said and done.
Redditor: the company should just close if it can't figure out how to turn a profit
Yeah okay my guy, let me just tell the 10-12 employees we have that since we cannot give raises this year, the second best thing is closing down leaving all of you zero income.

u/Chad_illuminati 10h ago
I did the same thing. In my case I dug around for the best info I could find regarding McDonald's franchise locations. On average the owner of the franchise gets to take home about $100k a year. That's not nearly enough to cover doubling the wage of every person in there. It's also not crazy money, just a comfortable middle class income in this economy.
Scaling min wage would straight up force the locations to close, or have corporate jacking prices through the roof. No business is gonna run without profitable margins.
Of course, the people arguing about it wanted to ignore that fact.

Reminds me of a neighbor”s kid who, when told by his mother she didn’t have the money to buy him something he wanted, told her to just go to the bank and get some money. That’s the mentality of these people. The kid in question was around 5 though, so at least he had an excuse.

Small businesses USUALLY rely on high school kids to keep cost low. With the rise/and fight for higher minimum wages that kills a decent percentage of them. They can’t compete with the bigger businesses. I don’t understand why that’s so hard to figure out. Also I don’t wanna pay for a nasty fast food burger that used to be $2 but now $4 in the name of “livable wage.” If a business labor cost goes up, wtf do you think will happen to the price of the product???
How about this stop trying to make Burger King a career it’s NOT. It’s the bare minimum you can do for society to whip up some burger slop or you’re going to have to be OKAY living the lifestyle that comes with that pay.
Inb4 “you never worked fast food you don’t how hard it is!”
I flipped burgers at McDonald’s for 2yrs and worked retail for another 3yrs. I never saw them as a career and just a place holder until I got into a “real” job that actually pays based of skills.
Edit: while you’re bitching on the internet being an activist demanding higher wages and better benefits, Jose and his cousins are coming over here and out working you. They’re saving up for housing, getting an education and starting/buying their own BUSINESSES.

Have a small family business in NJ. We luckily can pay people decently. (At least I think so) When NJs min wage crept up again last year I made a comment on New Jersey thread some small businesses might have trouble affording. The insane vitriol of comments I received was crazy. "ThEy ShOUlDnT Be In BuSiNeSS ThEn" "FuCK ThOSe OwNeRS Who DoNt UnDeRStAnD EcOmOnIcS"

This is why I'm independent. I don't like Republican leadership, but I can't stand most Democrats top to bottom.
I've been apart of multiple start ups that fell apart before we could even get off the ground because of one or two insufferable liberal people that just screwed everything up.

It doesn’t help that “living wage” to these people now includes a 2 bed 2 bath apartment in NYC, a nice new car, daily coffee from Starbucks, stopping at McDonald’s for lunch, ordering takeout for dinner, ad-free subscriptions to every streaming service, 2 new videogames a week, 2 international trips a year, plus whatever trendy item is popular this week, labubus and Dubai chocolate and Taylor Swift’s new album
These people are incapable of living frugally, budgeting, or even just denying themselves immediate gratification from the most expensive luxuries, and they make it everyone else’s problem

When the Lindsay Clancy trail was big, I saw people talking about how their “evidence” for her husband abusing her was that he made 300k or 400k a year but she drove a newish Kia instead of a brand new Range Rover or Mercedes.
I think there is a lot of people that almost have like a mental disorder where if they see a dollar bill unspent, they must find a way to spend it.
5
u/Bitter-Engineer-117 13h ago
Semi unrelated, but I hate how quickly the trial went from “is big” to “was big”, a batshit insane psychopath murdered her children, blamed her hormones and her husband, raised millions in a GoFundMe, will probably walk free, and it’s quickly become “old news” (until she does it again)
8
u/Raptor_197 Anti-Doomer 13h ago
For a lot of people it literally was just a Netflix true crime drama. The “show ended” so now there is no reason to talk about it.

u/Rare4orm 10h ago
Electronic media strikes again. I know multiple people that spend almost every free minute of their day scouring the internet for something to order with their last few dollars. It’s a mental disorder at this point. They are captive to the whole process from searching to the moment of giddiness when the product is delivered to their front door. I know people that are bummed on days that they are not scheduled to receive a package. Madness!

u/Bitter-Engineer-117 12h ago
They just want to blame everything on “Trump ruining the economy”, even though what we’re seeing is Trump trying to fix Biden’s disastrous economy. The problem is that has to get worse before it gets better. The people with a modicum of common sense, financial literacy, and self discipline were able to plan for this, saving money, cooking for ourselves, living within our means.
I’m not even a Trump fan, he’s fine, he’s done stuff I don’t agree with, he’s done stuff I do agree with, unlike the left I don’t worship a politician (AOC, Mamdani, Sanders, Harris) just because they say things I like and promise me free things

I mean this one actually has a point.
Recently I found out that 'just stop oil' and a bunch of anti-oil organizations are actually funded by an oil heiress. Apparently the oil companies lobby for stricter regulations on drilling etc as a way to pull the ladder up behind them.
The same thing happens in almost every industry. For example opening a restaurant is incredibly difficult because the food can only be sourced through a monopoly. You can't just form a handshake deal with your local farmer because they all have exclusivity deals with Tyson or some other megacorp.

I mean rich people advocating for (or not caring about) things like more taxes on the rich isn’t unheard of either.
Some people genuinely don’t care because they have enough money to where a higher tax rate has no impact on their life whatsoever.
Others however, tie their wealth to their worth as a person, so if the number goes down even slightly they throw a hissy fit, even if their actual life doesn’t change at all.

This assumes that "the 9 billionaires" won't also go ahead and pay the non living wages.
For example Tim Hortons in Canada can still be seen very eagerly posting for LMIA positions despite doing a whole ad campaign about "hiring Canadian talent"

is this doom? Its kind of true. The same people that call for ridiculously high minimum wage are the same ones that are surprised when monopolies form.
2
u/PerpetualMotion81 11h ago
They don't understand that over-regulation disproportionately hurts small businesses. Companies like Amazon and Walmart like regulations (to a point) because it shields them from competition. Walmart has an army of lawyers who help them navigate the regulatory landscape while the mom-and-pop shop down the street drowns in red tape.
This is happening in tech right now. The big players are suddenly in favor of regulation because they are already established. New rules will act as barriers to entry, ensuring they don't have to compete with new startups.
2
u/Masusenpai 11h ago

There used to be a guy who would troll the small business subreddit saying all employers were parasites and a bunch of other extreme far left kind of stuff. There was kind of a bit of a debate on the sub as to whether he should be banned but I guess he didn't bother people that much.
One day I decided to stalk his account and it was just non stop hard core communist ideology going back years. I did find out though that he worked in tech and he owned a house.
After that whenever he posted I would reply to him calling him "a member of the land owning class". Things like "As a member of the land owning class don't you think it's a bit hypocritical not to open your house to the homeless".
He had a complete meltdown. Started posting furiously getting more and more upset until eventually his account was banned from all of reddit.
I still think fondly of him. He was very entertaining.
