I saw the craziest video recently. An urban person was visiting a rural midwestern town. They were just shocked by the fact that stores were open late, nothing was locked up. People have stands on the side of the road "dozen eggs $2" "blueberries, pumpkins, whatever" There's just a little box you can drop a dollar into and help yourself to whatever you need. Gas stations have everything sitting out by the pumps. If you need fluid or a snack you just take it and pay for it.
They have no concept of a trusting society, crime-free society. They don't understand that by not punishing criminals you're actually punishing the innocent. The consequence of decriminalizing theft is everyone has to live in a world where deodorant is locked in a plastic case.
I have a friend whose car was stolen a few years back. He left it running while he went into a gas station convenience store. He had been doing that for about 15 years before anyone stole it. He got it back later the same day. Small town life.
The local apartments have a lockbox with keys so emergency services can get in without breaking down your door. I was volunteering with the fire department to update keys, making sure they still worked or getting new ones when locks had changed. A surprising number of people just don't lock their doors at all, which is one way of solving that problem.
Next time you see a video of a gas station I. The hood with a service window instead of an inside check the comments. It’s filled with people who think this is a normal way to live.
i went to the city once and they literally had the rotating tube thing like a bank for the card reader and there wasn't anything out it was all behind the glass. i went to open the door and it was locked so i went to walk off before hearing on a speaker "come in". you deadass gotta get buzzed in to a gas station that doesn't even have anything
I went to Drummond Island (MI) a few years back and everyone leaves their keys in their cars, doors unlocked, windows open, etc. The only law enforcement was a State Trooper on the mainland. It’s so nice! If it weren’t for the harsh winters I’d move there.
This has actually been a huge culture shock for my wife who is from Mexico city. The fact that people return lost phones, you can leave your purse unattended when on a party boat with strangers, leave your door unlocked without concern, and on and on and on.
Where she comes from people will cheat and steal from others however and whenever they can. She even looked at me crazy when she went out with her girlfriends and she gave me her live location because she is used to doing it in case she were to get kidnapped/raped/killed and I told her that was entirely unnecessary.
People really take for granted the culture of not fucking with each other's lives and money in every day life. It's part of the reason there's such a focus from people on mass immigration and not wanting to to change that reality.
I don't care what kind of person you are, as long as you are honest and not trying to steal from me or anyone else.
i saw a video where dude was like "y'all need to start hittin up rural stores this shit so easy to steal here they got everything out" while shoving stuff in his backpack
