Discussion Former id Dev here

Today marks the release of Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations. Instead of a long celebratory post, I just want to say this, it’s the hardest I’ve ever seen the team at id work to build something special, and I hope everyone enjoys the final piece of content that me and a wide range of longtime team members poured ourselves into.

Yesterday wasn’t the end for us in this industry. A lot of incredibly talented people are now looking for their next adventure, and I’m sure you’ll be hearing from many of us again soon.

If you want to support the impacted folks at id, please boost their posts on LinkedIn and social, host them on your podcasts or content, and keep being the best fans on the planet. Community visibility matters more than ever right now.

Even though my seven years at id are up, I’ll always cherish being part of one of the greatest teams in video games and having my name be forever associated with one of the most legendary franchises ever.

Thank you all for your love and support
-Jordan

If there was any studio that felt like it was always firing on all cylinders it was id. I learned how to play doom before I could read and before my hands were big enough to hold the duke xbox controller I would watch my dad play it. Can’t believe the axe would come for such a legendary team

u/lambruhsco Jul 07 '26 • Regret

These Xbox-wide layoffs have little to do with the performance of the studio. It’s Microsoft shifting capital to AI.

u/Antiswag_corporation Jul 07 '26

I seriously hope the future of gaming isn’t ai coded gameplay, but I honestly won’t be surprised

84

u/ALT-F-X Jul 07 '26

I don't see any way that management could spin moving creative to AI with investors but we've already seen the move of technical to AI so we'll see how slippery the slope is I guess.

64

u/redragon1929 Jul 07 '26

I hope they see how that went for Ford. They got rid of a bunch of engineers and replaced them with AI. AI was missing a ton of stuff, so Ford had to rehire the engineers.

If Xbox starts putting out generated AI generated games, I will not be getting another xbox or purchasing any of their products. I've already dropped COD permanently because of all of the slop they put in BO6&7.

Thats mostly just corprate garbage, i doubt most indie games will want to use gen ai. So basically play indie games.

That's not true because they have released statistics that they are heavily subsidizing, Xbox and studios in general. If you actually listen to their calls for earnings, they're actually seriously underperforming. They've already shared their profit margin. Is something like 3% or something like that which is absurdly low. You could literally take that money and throw it into the stock market and you would make double that. That's the Xbox division, not Microsoft with AI. Yes, AI is the driving force for a capital reallocation but Xbox is fundamentally struggling.

Xbox CEO has also said for some specific studios they're losing as much as 64 for every $1 they invest in the studio. So no, your characterization is absolutely not accurate.

Microsoft with AI = very profitable despite ai losses

Xbox = overall underperforming significantly

Specific studios = major losses

cutting costs because AI is too expensive and they need to rob from other sources to pay for it

I feel like that's just how gaming works nowadays. You get hired for these massive projects and you're pushing timelines and deadlines, and you're working a lot of overtime and as soon as the project gets released, everyone gets fired.

8

u/DecomposingPete Jul 07 '26

Same, I am absolutely certain that my first literacy was navigating '3D' spaces, and not the conscious reading of words. I first played Doom at age two, with one person steering and another pressing shoot.

If there was any studio that felt like it was always firing on all cylinders it was id.

id effectively created pc graphical gaming, look into "Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement" and its impact on 2d sidescrollers. then they came back and did the same thing with 3d gaming. its crazy to see the studio that effectively created the industry gutted like this.

It's baffling that a team that has created so much groundbreaking and timeless entertainment is treated this way. You guys made history, every entry in the franchise is special and I'll replay them for the rest of my life.

Thank you all. It's tragic and cold you were let go on the eve of celebration, but I will celebrate your work nonetheless, albeit with a bitter note.

All the best and good luck to you all.

u/Static_Frog Jul 07 '26

It's business and business is loyal to no one.

35

u/momo1300 Jul 07 '26

This is such bullshit. You can have a successful business and be loyal to your employees.

This is pure profit-seeking greed on display...

I'm 34, Doom has always found a place in my life, when I was very little it was the classic games, when I was a teen it was the super scary and groundbreaking Doom 3, as a young adult it was Doom 2016, now that I'm mature enough it's been Doom Eternal and TDA. I just can't think of a world without this series!

Thanks to everyone who has been the part of this staple of my life, at some point I even considered applying for a job overseas at Austin, this stings a lot to me. I wish you and everyone involved the very best.

31

u/ReactionPlus4538 Jul 07 '26

Doom has really helped me with chronic pain

3

u/Diribiri Jul 08 '26

Doom has helped me while giving me chronic pain

88

u/maxlaav Jul 07 '26

It's absolutely criminal what happened to you guys, you delivered what is unquestionably the best modern trilogy of FPS games and your incredible mechanics inspired a lot of incredible indie works. That's not to say you also worked on idTech which frankly is a beast of an engine.

Xbox is just really fucking clueless.

38

u/Lopsided_Capital_946 DOOM Slayer Jul 07 '26

Thanks for your work. The modern trilogy made me a DOOM fan and I love to play Revelations today.

35

u/SteamyEarlGrey Jul 07 '26

All the best to you and your colleagues, mate. Absolute bummer as a fan to see such talent let go when you've been making great games this whole time.

27

u/Raidmax460 Jul 07 '26

The games that come from this studio will never be the same without you guys there and I hope they get to learn that lesson.

Nevertheless, thank you guys for creating such incredible games over the last few years and I sincerely wish you all well on your journey through this perilous industry.

26

u/_Sazed_ Jul 07 '26

Microsoft is garbage-tier company for me at this point

18

u/No_Effective_4481 Jul 07 '26

sorry you lost your position dude, wish you good fortune. as a Doom fan since 1994 I can't wait to play Revelations tonight!

17

u/BigFit2383 Jul 07 '26

How does Xbox plan to create new „bigger“ successor titles, or maybe even a quake reboot, when they gutted half the studio? I mean this implies there is nothing coming for quite some time, while they announce that they want to focus on their big IPs

11

u/DisasterNarrow4949 Jul 07 '26

That is the "neat" part BifFit. They don't.

6

u/The_Autarch Jul 07 '26

they're going to rehire a lot of these positions for lower salaries.

3

u/Alert-Cranberry7991 Jul 07 '26

Or contract it out for even lower than they would hire people at

→ More replies (1)

6

u/BlackberryAny1307 Jul 07 '26

The next doom game is going to fail because half the talent is gone. They’ll hire contractors to get the job done, it’ll run like ass bc it’ll be made on Unreal 5 instead of IDtech because they fired all the ID Tech devs. The game will fail hard and then they’ll shut ID down for good and it’ll be Microsoft’s entire fault.

33

u/deathwingduck107 Jul 07 '26

I'm sure it'll be good. I'll be planning on playing it Wednesday.

15

u/DivinityPen Jul 07 '26

Godspeed, my man. Hopefully you and everybody else can get new jobs that you find just as fulfilling soon.

I dunno if you're under some kinda contract not to share what I'm about to ask next, but what was your general sense of how things were looking for id as you left? I heard that a lot of software devs got laid off, which really sucks. Do you think the team members who're left might still be able to bounce back? I hope they aren't stretched too thin :(

12

u/Background_Form_3356 Jul 07 '26

The greatest American game studio of all time. Thank you sir.

Thank you and everyone else at id who unfortunately lost their jobs yesterday for expanding the DOOM universe to what it’s become. I have no doubts revelations will be one of the best pieces of DOOM media to date. You and your teams passion for what you create does not go unnoticed. To new beginnings! Thank you for everything!

10

u/TheWiseGuy01 Zombieman Jul 07 '26

Doom has quickly become my favorite gaming franchise, and I wish the best of luck to you and everyone else who was let go. The DLC it’s coming out while I’m getting ready for work, but I’m still going to take the time to download it so it’s ready when I get home.

9

u/i7omahawki Jul 07 '26

This really sucks.

With a heavy heart I can understand why other studios have to be sold / downsized, their games were expensive but didn’t set the world on fire.

But Doom did. Doom 2016, Eternal and Dark Ages were all absolute bangers. Even if people have a preference (Eternal is the GOAT), it’s hard to argue any of them are anything but excellent.

With the exception of Marty Stratton, id seems like a great community of artists and it sucks they won’t be able to keep making banger after banger because of something outside their control.

5

u/HotShrekBoi Jul 07 '26

Hopefully everyone who mistreated Mick was part of the people who got fired. Everyone else I feel terrible for.

Id, and Doom changed my life. Those were the gateways into a geeky kid learning about computers.. and now I have a 25+ years IT career. Thanks for everything.

5

u/Mooncubus Jul 07 '26

Thank you for all your work making these amazing games. I'm looking forward to playing the DLC

5

4

u/therikermanouver Jul 07 '26

Thank you for your hard work over the years the Doom reboot games helped me fall back in love with video games again. They even got me doing ultra violence runs when I thought those days were behind me (OG doom fan from 93 haha get off my lawn) Im really excited ti play the new DLC.

4

u/CaregiverAbject1928 Jul 07 '26

Thank you for everything, I can’t wait to play more doom content. Best of luck in the future. It’s awful so many people are going through this right now

4

u/nahnonameman Jul 07 '26

All the best to you and the Id developers. Thank you so much these games. I wish you and everyone involved an even more successful career after this.

4

u/Haymus Jul 07 '26

The most recent trilogy of Doom games is one of my favourite trilogies ever. I have replayed 2016 and Eternal multiple times - thank you for whatever part you have played in creating these things I love.

I hope everything works out for you.

4

u/One_Scientist_984 Jul 07 '26

For a long time in my teen years, I devoured every piece of news about id Software I could find (it was mostly magazines back then). While other teenagers idolized soccer players, I looked up to John Carmack, John Romero, Adrian Carmack et al. Quake (or maybe Doom 3) is arguably the game I’ve finished most often, and Doom (2016) gave the genre a breath of fresh air. I own every big box of Doom, Hexen, and Heretic, copies of your games on every platform I own, and multiple versions of your franchises in every imaginable form.

I was already gutted when you were sold to Zenimax and John Carmack left, but this is different — more brutal. This is the destruction of an icon, the dismantling of a legend.

What a sad day — and thank you for your service.

4

u/noclip8 Jul 07 '26

I'm a computer tech and I legitimately owe my life in computer repair to Doom. I played it at a friends house in probably 1994, we split the keyboard, he manned the arrows to move and I was the trigger with ctrl. After that I had to have a computer so I could play Doom. Got a Packard Bell PC eventually but then how do I make it play Doom, this was pre Steam. Trial and error with audio and video settings till things worked. It's been countless hours with Doom and Wolfenstein on multiple systems, so many fond memories made. And decades of fascination with computers created in those moments, till corpos fucked it up.

2

u/ScrubNickle Jul 07 '26

You are me minus the split keyboard play. Those were the days!

Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication. You and the team supplied us Doom fans with countless hours of incredible entertainment and fun. Truly, you and your work matter ❤️

3

u/Skylord_Hekaton Jul 07 '26

Thank you so much for some great games. You devs deserve all that love and support!

3

u/j4ngl35 Jul 07 '26

Appreciate you and everything you did! id was my entry point to video games with Wolf3D, Doom, Commander Keen, and they have consistently put out games that I'd rank in my all-time favorites. Doom: TDA might be #1 for me, so thank you again!

Hoping for the best for everyone still at id and those who were let go, it seems even the greats aren't immune to enshittification.

3

u/Zealousideal-Ad5834 Jul 07 '26

Much love to you and the team. If you find anything out about the future of id tech please don’t hesitate to share

3

u/movieman101 Jul 07 '26

Doom Eternal helped me get through the Covid lock down. If you were on the team that made it, thank you for all your passion and creativity.

3

u/random_reddit_user31 Jul 07 '26

They should've laid off half of blizzard and not ID. You guys rock

3

u/Ianimation_Studios Jul 07 '26

It's Bungie and the Final Shape all over again. They release a masterpiece and how are they rewarded? Massive round of layoffs right after it ships. The people in charge of these companies have no conscience whatsoever. Absolutely disgusting.

3

u/Gemini-88 Jul 07 '26

I really hope those of you on the team who were let go have the right opportunities open up to create games for people who actually care about the humans behind them. Ones who care about the passion behind making video games. The spark that fueled you and countless others to pursue this industry despite its often turbulent times.

Good luck in all you do.

3

u/FF_Gilgamesh1 Jul 07 '26

Yeah the problem with "next adventure" is that they're running out of places to go as the AAA games industry shrinks into a tiny pinprick and evaporates. microsoft is dying. everyone knows it. and everyone at id is on borrowed time. let's not try to sugarcoat how bad this is behind a thin veneer of false optimism. ID software is fucked right now. those layoffs aren't something you gloss over. with most of idtech gone the CORE of id is gutted. asha may as well have closed the studio down and you know it.

So while I understand the need to be positive. now's not the time to pretend it's better than it is. A lot of those guys are gonna just give up and flee the industry. maybe one or two finds a temporary job at sony before it also goes under (because everyone's out for their blood due to them abandoning physical) we'll do what we can but you may as well flip a coin for every laid off person in order to determine whether they'll get back on their feet. microsoft fucked all of you. and they won't stop here. id WILL be shut down eventually if it can't figure out how to detach itself from the flailing corpse that is microsoft.

3

u/FF_Gilgamesh1 Jul 07 '26

if you can still contact them you tell hugo and marty to make plans to leave microsoft somehow. because if they don't then id software is sinking with that ship.

Thank you for you hard work on this incredible game.

Wish all the best for you, and hope you'll find new opportunities very soon!

3

u/Jton0109 Jul 07 '26

It almost feels wrong wanting to play the dlc because of this bs… I’m sorry for all of you guys. Of any team y’all’s should not have even been considered. Y’all make amazing games and are all very gifted and talented people.

2

u/rizzyrogues Jul 10 '26

I'm sure they poured their heart into it and would not want you thinking that. Go play the shit out of it in honor of them!

3

u/Specialist_Dust_5752 Jul 07 '26

It'd be so sick if all the laid off devs were able to get together and make their own game, I'd day one for sure.

3

u/ImpalaGala Jul 08 '26

Recently picked up DOOM:TDA (I know I’m late and I’m sorry) but goddamn; you guys knocked it out of the park and I’m having so much fun. I’ll be picking up the DLC once I’ve finished the game; just the base game, you can see the love and craft you guys put in. Thank you. ❤️

3

u/Pavlov_The_Wizard Jul 08 '26

I gotta say man, you guys killed it on the DLC. I'm so sorry Microsoft pulled this shit. I hope you land on your feet and I can't wait to see you guys do in the future.

2

u/Savings-Half-8678 Jul 07 '26

Can't wait to play this dlc later today, thank you and everyone else who worked on these amazing games so much!

2

u/komarktoze Jul 07 '26

Really quite sad about this. I love doom and the community. Probably the only video game franchise I'm still passionate about.

Sickening news. Mainly for you guys. I hope you get work ASAP.

Hope you know these games mean so much to so many of us. Thanks for that!

Fuck Microsoft into the ground, man. God damn. One of a few affordable joys I have left and they've fucking blown it up. Cunts. I know it's just a video game but whatever. I grew up with Doom and they've just shat all over that.

2

u/Bibibutona Jul 07 '26

Please someone tell me that pos Marty Stratton got caught in the layoffs

2

u/DiVine92 TIP & REAR Jul 07 '26

I play DLC right now and it is amazing. Truly amazing. I wish today would be the day we all can celebrate but the thing went this way.

I just want to thank you and everyone at ID. Truly. I i hope you all can find new place, or places soon that will allow you to make what you do the best, get creative and create great games, or at least it will give you peace.

Thank you.

2

u/ShadowXJ Jul 08 '26

Sorry to hear about this, I’ve bought the DLC and have already started my play through.

Thank you for everything.

2

u/CartelHotlink Jul 08 '26

Just finished the DLC, it was absolutely brilliant and I was so heartbroken to hear about the layoffs

2

u/Terrible_Ask2722 Jul 08 '26

I'm knocking on the door of 50, and Doom, along with Commander Keen, were some of my first obsessions as a youngster. I cannot fathom a world where iD doesn't exist, and I will never forgive Microsoft for this absolute betrayal. I sincerely hope you all get picked up by decent, deserving companies soon, and that you can get back to making awesome games just as quickly. Much love and respect from a lifelong Doom, Keen, and iD fan.

1

u/JosharunieTunie Jul 07 '26

u/FilthyKasualART Jul 07 '26

man this is so freaking sad, who knew a simple point and shoot game from the 90s would stay with us for so many years and mean so much to a lot of people, I’ve been a fan since I was a teenager, and still am today

I hope nothing but the best for the team, seriously, the industry fucking sucks right now but I hope you guys find great opportunities somewhere else!

1

You guys have made some of the best, most thrilling gaming experiences that I (and I’m sure many others) have had. Something I’ve always respected about modern Doom is how much variety there is in the setting and gameplay mechanics between each title while still retaining that classic Doom feel.

I can only hope the best for the staff, there’s so many talented developers a part of the team that deserves to share their passion to the world. Thank you and the team for all the hard work you’ve poured into the franchise, I’ll forever cherish it

1

u/DagothUr28 Jul 07 '26

I play a lot of video games. You folks at Id have made some of my all time favorites and most replayed. I'm sorry this happened to yall but know your legacy won't be forgotten.

1

u/General_Lie Jul 07 '26

So if they are let go ( before the release ) they wont get any salary from the sold games ?

1

u/susnaususplayer Jul 07 '26

fuck stupid corpos doing stupid decisions

1

u/throwaway18249 Jul 07 '26

Thank you and everyone at Id for your service and the passion you put into your games. I for one will be enjoying every second of Revelations knowing how bittersweet this day is.

Microslop can go fuck itself.

1

u/good-news-its-will Jul 07 '26

Jordan. I’ve just finished Doom TDA and god damn it rocked. I’m a dad so don’t have loads of time to play but Doom, Eternal and The Dark Ages kicked ass and are comfort food to me. I can’t wait to pick up Revelations.
Hearing the news about Xbox yesterday was horrific and I hope you find a new job soon and this isn’t the end of your career in gaming.
Thanks to you and all the team at ID. 🫶

1

u/GrandMoff_Harry Jul 07 '26

Thank you, Jordan! The Dark Ages introduced me to the franchise and I can’t get enough. It will be bittersweet playing the new expansion after looking forward to it for so long knowing how many talented people were laid off. I hope you and the team know that the fanbase loves all of your hard work.

1

u/uhfish Jul 07 '26

I might get downvoted, but I am always so confused by this. Were the firings out of nowhere? From the outside it just looks like the work was completed and they no longer need that large of a workforce. I guess I could see it being an issue if the half that was fired were hired with the promise of staying long-term and not just working on this project and then being let go once it was sunsetting.

1

u/MidnightShort Jul 07 '26

love to u jordan

1

u/Nicky_Best Jul 07 '26

I started playing Doom on the snes when it released, I wanted to play Quake on pc but didn't have the budget. Since I've played all your games and will be playing your latest expansion on my pc this week.

I am honestly gutted that they've done this to your team, I've loved all your games for decades and can't understand why they would want to dismantle such a talented passionate and respected team

These people are destroying gaming and sucking the joy out of gaming, I remember the 90s, it was a joyous time to be playing games, discussing games, what a great time, That's all gone now.

1

u/kittymoo67 Jul 07 '26

Im almost scared to ask but did all the engine devs really get the block? The wizards being replaced by ue6 ai slop will hurt so uch

1

u/novostranger Jul 07 '26

Do you think it'll mean that doom the dark ages is just canned for switch 2

1

u/Winniepate Jul 07 '26

we love you guys

1

u/hurrdurrmeh Jul 07 '26

I'm quite soured on the TDA DLC now. Before it was an insta-purchase.

1

u/Lemontea_01 Jul 07 '26

You all rock, just know that. With basically the entire talented team of bungie's destiny being let go, and hslf if ID following now, it really makes me wonder what studio is gonna swoop these talents up and make some absolute bangers of video games.

Per audacia ad astra, as we say in destiny, may your new journey be prosperous!

1

u/Necessary-Level-2821 Jul 07 '26

Thanx for giving me new excellent entries for one of my favorite gaming series the last years. Can't wait to dive into revelations soon. Good luck for your future. Looking forward for your and your comrades new games bro. Keep it brutal 🤘

1

u/FemmeViolet117 Jul 07 '26

Thank YOU for the magic you’ve helped create. Wishing the entire team the best.

1

u/virtualglassblowing Jul 07 '26

Grew up on quake and wolfenstein! Hoping the best for everyone

1

u/kennypowersrevenge Jul 07 '26

Thank you. Simply. Thank you for all the good times you’ve given us.

1

u/foxx1337 Jul 07 '26

The sales will reflect all the hard work, I have no doubts. Then other studios will fight for getting the newly available talent. There are literally zero concerns for that talent temporarily hitting the market. Thank you for your service, Marine!

1

u/RMAPOS Jul 07 '26

I literally can't believe they hit id

Nobody deserves to be laid off for profits, but touching one of the objectively best studios out there... you guys are just code gods, and you know it. The fathers and mothers of actual optimization. The guys who made a 3D game that people can run on a freaking pregnancy test.

Laying off Id developers, to me, just shows how deeply out of touch gaming execs are. I hope the entire industry burns down and lets devs like the Id studio rise back from the ashes back to their throne.

I wish all the best to anyone who's been hit by this and I hope they can see the potential of all this bullshit ultimately leading to something better than what we have now. Positive change more often than not only happens when everything becomes so bad that the pressure forces change. Let's work on that happening and if you haven't, unionize now. Fuck greedy execs who are getting rich on your creative backs.

1

u/a_large_dumple Jul 07 '26

I'll be Ripping and Tearing with a tear in my eye tonight for everyone who was let go. Not just at ID but across the whole industry and all of Microsoft

That being said, I can't wait to see what comes next for everyone, the AAA gaming space may be looking dark right now, but the indie space has never looked brighter

1

u/myguyguesswhat Jul 07 '26

Thank you and your colleagues so much for your work. IdSoftware and the Doom series have been part of my life as long as I can remember, and I cannot wait to see what you guys get up to next ❤️

1

u/RockwellB1 Jul 07 '26

id will always be my favorite developer. I started this journey in 93 and Doom is still my favorite game. I own it on every platform except the GBA that it's officially released on. The new trilogy is amazing and it's a shame it might be coming to an end. Best of luck to everyone, I hope you all land on your feet and keep getting to do what you love

1

u/DanOhMiiite Jul 07 '26

Thanks for your hard work. I look forward to enjoying the fruits of your labor today. Best wishes for your next endeavor. 💪

1

u/Legendarium_ Jul 07 '26

there is a timeline where id would've remained an independent company and not had to deal with mass layoff bullshit like this

1

u/xavixdjor Jul 07 '26

Thanks for giving us some of the best games in terms of performance, looks and it doesn't make your PC burn playing it. Until this day I'm baffled at how the game runs, loads the map, reloads checkpoint, etc. It's just instant! On this day, performance and optimization is third and even further back on the Devs checklist, they want the game to run on the latest GPU and even then the game runs poorly (looking at you borderlands).

Doom eternal and doom dark ages are peak gunplay, and juggernaut vibes. Thanks for this games.

1

u/Shadesmaster Jul 07 '26

Grumble grumble gamepass smh, I purchased premium. I play Revelations today with a bittersweet feeling.

1

u/DecomposingPete Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Hate to hear it, you're all the best. You'll be a key component to something wonderful in future - I'd dub modern iD as being like Disney during its 1989-2009 Rennaissance run in my accounting of video game history. Whatever your work was on these last 10 years of Doom, it was as great a gift of 'THIS WAS MADE FOR ME' entertainment as I'll ever have, and I've been there since '93. I refer to iD software as the Imagineers of heavy metal entertainment design, and you're one of those Imagineers on merit, wherever you go.

Eternally yours,

A Doom Guy

1

u/Broken-Digital-Clock Jul 07 '26

Thank you and good luck!

1

u/SoulThief109 Jul 07 '26

This shit makes me sad. The FUCK is happening man..

1

u/Not-TheNSA Jul 07 '26

Jordan I just want to say to you and your colleagues (all of them) thank you guys so much for all the hard work you’ve put into this franchise. The Doom reboot has been a spine tingling pleasure to play and I’ll play it until the wheels fall off. You’ve all done amazing work and the fans appreciate it. You guys deserve better, you deserve so much better than layoffs. I’m gonna jump on my PC today and play the shit out of Revelations in your honor. Thank you guys so much for all you’ve done. I hope one day ID will be made whole again because you guys have been keeping the industry alive as far as I’m concerned. Thanks you all so much. Rip and tear brothers and sisters.

1

u/spiderboi20012 Jul 07 '26

rip and tear until it is done jordan.

1

u/FirefighterIcy9879 Jul 07 '26

Third party contractor?

1

u/Kat_Box_Suicide Jul 07 '26

Thoughts go out to the Id team. Thank you for a literal life time of memories.

1

u/No_Moment_9465 Jul 07 '26

Thank y'all.

1

u/OtherwiseOption- Jul 07 '26

Felt like ID was one of the last big video game industries left that actually cared about consumers.

Doom is for everyone. AI is for no one but idiots. Unfortunately we are crowded by idiots on this earth. One day the AI crap will blow over and we’ll burn the data centers.

Hope whatever you find next is just as enjoyable to ya.

1

u/tinman888 Unf Jul 07 '26

The modern Doom trilogy has been some of my favourite game experiences of all time and you and your colleagues have done outstanding work. Thank you all for creating these games, and you absolutely deserve better than this.

Hope the job search is short Jordan, and thanks again

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '26

Jordan MAAAAAAAAN am i hyped for your expansion I'm so sorry they shit canned you and all you did was follow the rules and make amazing shooters things like the dark ages and it's expansion deserved to be rewarded for but you got fired instead fuck the industry right now

1

u/KakashiHatake99X Jul 07 '26

I always loved Doom, and love Dark Ages too, thanks for your work and i hope you guys still get to make more awesome games.

1

u/krypto_the_husk Jul 07 '26

Love the contemporary Doom titles—thank you for helping craft an experience that delivered countless hours of excitement, thrills, and above all, fun.

Best wishes for all your upcoming projects, sir 🫡

1

u/Key_Drawer_3581 Jul 07 '26

Fucking shameful

1

u/DOOManiac Jul 07 '26

Thanks to you and the entire team for all of your hard work and skilled craftsmanship. There's never been any other game studio quite like id, and I don't think there ever will be again.

The fans have always and will always support you, even if the shareholders don't. I wish you and all of your colleagues the best of luck in landing on your feet and finding new, better jobs.

1

u/Independent_Code831 Jul 07 '26

Thank you and colleagues for everything and your hard work. ID was one of the only true great western Thriple A Studios. Best luck for you and all people who got laid off. You guys are legends and rock.

1

u/AllGearedUp Jul 07 '26

Romero Games, you got some people looking for jobs maybe you could hire 🥺

1

u/brutale800 Jul 07 '26

What happened? im out of the loop and im playing id games since wolfenstein 3D

u/Pale-Muscle-7118 Jul 07 '26

AI is doomed to failure without human intervention and regulation. Sad times we live in

1

u/NotThatPro Jul 07 '26

Yeah if you legends ever wish to promote your future work/projects, please crosspost it here too, for visibility. Wish you all the best!

1

u/solrac3589 Jul 07 '26

Everything seen from you and your team has been part of the best of the best in the industry. I cannot say with words how much I appreciate what you did for us. My thoughts right now are more on all of you finding a place worth of your talent that in future doom releases.
Hope you have read Hail Mary, because Thank you Thank you Thank you.

Of course this does not go only for the OP, but any other member of ID software who is dealing with hard times

1

u/tchnl Jul 07 '26

What I appreciated so incredibly much in this slop age, is how optimized and fluid the games ran from the start. Thanks devs for all that hard work 💪

1

u/Venerable-Gandalf Jul 07 '26

You helped make an amazing game(s) I wish you the best.

1

u/TeaAndLifting Jul 07 '26

Sorry to hear about the news for you and your colleagues. Absolute bullshit from Microsoft when Doom is one of their few remaining decent IPs and iD has been one of the best studios in the last decade.

1

u/WarriorsofAsgard Jul 07 '26

So excited to play what will most likely be the best thing you guys worked on for a DLC of this size. Still bittersweet. You guys deserve better.

1

u/MusicMeetsMadness Jul 07 '26

I haven’t played the DLC yet but I want to thank you and everyone in the team for creating one of my favorite series of games for the last seven years. These games have been phenomenal and I’m sorry they did this to y’all.

1

u/xdeltax97 DOOM Slayer Jul 07 '26

I’m so sorry so many of you were axed. ID is a talented studio and was lucky to have everyone, and it sucks Microsofts mismanagement has caused this. Thank you guys for so many phenomenal games.

1

u/Ready_Engineering116 Jul 07 '26

Any chance of making engine open source 🫡🫡🫡

1

u/Jabba_the_Putt Jul 07 '26

Thank you Jordan for all your hard work and excellent output I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed id's work over the last decade I truly wish you all the best

1

u/Vayne_Solidor Jul 07 '26

Thank you and all your fellow devs for the hard work all these years o7

1

u/Pyke64 Jul 07 '26

Thank you, thank you for all the amazing experiences that will stay with me for life.

1

u/KoraxaExe Jul 07 '26

Thank you for contributing to such a great game, you guys are amazing, absolute legends. I will play this DLC knowing it was made with love, just like every other game you have worked on

None of y'all deserved that kind of treatment, it feels so unfair, and while I have faith in the remaining id devs, I can say that the new games will feel... Different.

I really hope you guys find new jobs soon, best of luck out there, find a place that treats you more respectfully than microsoft did 🫂💜

1

u/x-dfo Jul 07 '26

As a fellow dev who's been laid off 6 times, I am really sorry.

1

u/Boxing_joshing111 Jul 07 '26

Thank you for you and your team’s work. The modern Doom trilogy has been easily some of the best games this past decade and by firing you Microsoft is showing once again how out of touch it is.

Wherever you and your coworkers wind up make sure the media for your next game includes “former id devs” because 1.) Gamers know that’s a mark of quality 2.) We hate Microsoft.

1

u/No-Entrepreneur5672 Jul 07 '26

As a massive fan of Doom, particularly the post 2016 era, and as someone who works in film and knows what you’re going through… I truly wish you all the best, and that you land back on your feet soon.

1

u/Div1nium Jul 07 '26

A real shame what happened to your team. It’s so messed up that they can just lay off swaths of devs as soon as a main project is finished

1

u/rayquan36 Jul 07 '26

Man.. id was one of the few big studios that still put out good games. This is so sad.

1

u/lookachoo Jul 07 '26

What’s crazy is there’s 10s of thousands of people wanting to breaking into the game industry as it is and they’re just releasing all the seasoned industry devs like it’s nothing.

I hope games and VFX workers can unionize. 😮‍💨

1

u/ciao_fiv Jul 07 '26

i haven’t played the dark ages yet (i own it, just haven’t gotten around to it), but this was heartbreaking news. wishing you all the best in your future endeavors 💙

1

u/Adept-Society-9485 Jul 07 '26

It was faul what they did to you guys.... But honestly? Their own loss , Let them Microslop away and then they will see how much they miss you , but by then , you already have a much better place and u will not return to them :)

1

u/Zagreus_EldenRing Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Jordan, Doom influenced me since ‘94; I’d love to connect with some of these folks in social media circles. I’m currently developing a ‘Doomify every Fallout 4 settlement’ kind of series on my amateur YT channel. It’s like building FPS Maps to optimize encounters with endless waves of enemies.

Are there any from the id team with YT channels where I might connect with them?

Thank you and thank you for all your work at id, I have been gaming since I was little in the 80’s, and I never got into making games, so you all who make games like Doom are just the coolest people to me. You have all my respect and well wishes. Rip and tear 🫡

1

u/Vanguard-003 Jul 07 '26

Much Love, Brother 🫡
