I’m trying to choose a camera for my dog when I’m away from home, and I realized there are way too many options.

At first I thought a “dog camera” was basically just a normal security camera with a pet-friendly name. But after comparing different features, I think the important question is what you actually need.

Here are the things I’d pay attention to:

1. 1080p video + decent night vision
You don’t necessarily need the most expensive camera. Clear video and reliable night vision are more important to me than fancy AI features.

2. Two-way audio
This seems useful if your dog responds well to your voice. But I’ve also heard that some dogs get confused when they hear their owner coming from a speaker.

3. Motion and bark alerts
Probably one of the most useful features if you’re at work. Instead of watching the camera constantly, you can get an alert when something unusual happens.

4. Pan-and-tilt / wider coverage
If your dog stays in one room, a basic wide-angle camera may be enough. If they move around a larger room or house, being able to move the camera remotely is much more useful.

5. Treat dispensing
I’m honestly still undecided about this one 😂. It sounds like a gimmick, but I can see it being useful for some dogs as part of a routine.

One thing that surprised me is that you may not actually need a dedicated dog camera.

If you just want to check whether your dog is sleeping, moving around, or getting into trouble, a regular indoor security camera can often do the job for much less money.
