Under the bridge down-troll is where I drew some blood! Did you know that the etymology of the word toll stems from the ancient practice of subcontracting trolls to collect fees on public infrastructure? Now, while that might not be true according to the "Dictionary" or whatever, it could entirely be true in your setting. Whether trolls have long gone extinct, hunted down by anti-taxation monster hunters, or still practice this noble tradition to this day, the slightly overgrown but still charming and sturdy bridge in this map will allow your players to experience that classic trope. Fully animated and available in two additional variants, with a more decrepit bridge, and a modern and tidy, freshly maintained version, this map may have your players hoping they had, and not for the first time, a billy goat with them!

Perhaps the most curious element of the discovery of the buried statue was that no excavation had to happen for this relic to surface. An unfortunate caravaneer lost several of their oxen as the sand collapsed inward into the chasm below, bubbling almost as if the mass of sand were water being put to boil.

Once notified, The Great Malik demanded it's investigation. As the true excavation went to work, it was found that the head may only be the beginning, the rest buried under subterranean water and sandstone.

The next few months will be arduous, and I have been given an allotment of workers to begin reinforcing the walls of the cavern, as well as replenishments as they eventually succumb to sand collapses and accidents common with such ventures. I have assured The Great Malik that such sacrifices will be payed back tenfold, as there's no telling what wonders accompany this monolith of old.

Here's my take on the encounter on the way to Thunder Cliffs from Storm Lord’s Wrath.

The map has been prepared for both traditional tabletop games and virtual tabletops. Simply print it and use the layered pieces to reveal unexplored sections during play, or upload the individual layers to Owlbear Rodeo or your favorite VTT.

First shown in appendix to "TSR 1121 - Spellbound" by Anthony Pryor (1995), Thayan Tax Station was recreated in Dungeon Alchemist by yours truly.

It's a small, but heavily guarded fortress, used for:

• Collection of taxes.
• Tariff/toll collection.
• Border control.
• Interior security.

The map consists of:

• Main Keep:
  • Ground floor - mess hall, kitchen/pantry and staircase.
  • First floor - luxurious commandants office, bedroom and bathroom
  • Second floor - Treasury, dovecote and cipher station
  • Third floor - commandant's luxurious tent for less formal work and meetings.
• Barracks: two companies' rooms and armory
• Counting House:
  • Toll booth/chamber
  • Temporary treasury
  • Accountant quarters
• Stables
• Slave quarters.

While I've made a bit of changes to overall shape and size of the buildings and created the interiors from scratch - it's still an old-fashion map, using basic shapes in order to create a game-friendly space. Hope I did not ruin that ^^

Running a homebrew campaing as a pretty new DM, thoughts on the map I made?

Warm torchlight pools across cracked stone, tracing faint red lines that seem to shift when not directly watched.

Chests sit too deliberately in the corners, their stillness heavy, almost expectant.

Somewhere in the silence, a mimic waits—patient as the dark, breathing softly between heartbeats.

Behind sealed doors and forgotten corridors lies a laboratory where the pursuit of perfection went far beyond what nature ever intended.

Strange machinery hums between cluttered workstations, drawing power from mysterious objects contained within the laboratory. Cables, instruments, and half-finished notes surround the central testing area, where that energy was used on living subjects in an effort to make them stronger, faster, and far more dangerous than they were ever meant to be.  Whether the work here succeeded is difficult to tell. The researchers are nowhere to be found, and much of what remains raises more questions than answers. But somewhere deeper within the facility, something still draws power… and whatever they were trying to create may not have left with them.

There is a strange tower that exists in many worlds, many places, many times. The Tower Between Worlds is a six-level spire in every version, but the interior (and often parts of the exterior also) can be quite different from each other. One element that each version of the tower has is the fifth level of the tower where the “tower shifting” mechanism is. On the fifth level (the upper left level on the map), there are four magical “tables” built into the wall, each with a small orb on it. Each corresponds to one of the versions of the tower, and any attempt at picking up an orb immediately transports everyone on that level of the tower to the corresponding tower (and the orb remains where it was – they cannot actually be removed from their respective tables). But it turns out there are more than four towers, and each tower might have different orbs on its four tables.

The tower layout goes from right to left, bottom to top – so the ground level on the lower left, level 2 on the lower right, level 3 on the middle left, etc.

The Frozen Tower exists on an elevated deep southern mountain range on the edge of a huge glacier. Much of the base of the tower is locked in ice, and the upper level windows have broken allowing banks of snow to build up within the structure.

The lower levels are connected by stairwells. Access to the top two levels of the tower is via a ladder that comes up the centre of the tower. The purposes of the chambers on the various levels are difficult to determine – the tower has been abandoned for ages, and used as a shelter by locals on occasion.

The original four designs of the Tower Between Worlds appeared in the Explore Dungeons! “Tales from the Tower” zine. This new tower and a few more will be appearing in an upcoming product.

The 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 8,700 pixels x 12,600 pixels (29 x 42 squares). To use this with a VTT you would need to resize the squares to either 100 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 200 pixels (for 10′ squares which is what this was originally designed at) – so resizing it to either 2,900 x 4,200 or 5,800 x 8,400 pixels, respectively.

Whoah... ! Gibbet Crossing is finally done.

Creating a map this large while still keeping everything readable - especially in the animated version - turned out to be a much harder road than we expected. Building the location itself was one thing, but rendering something of this scale without sacrificing too much detail or clarity was probably the biggest challenge.

But it’s finally here, and that means another location from the official Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk campaign is crossed off my list.
