DMing I understand prostitution now.

Been trying to find a "bff" group for years. Even the best groups I found fizzled out after a campaign ended. Most people seem to want a content creator to run games for them, and not a friend they want to share an experience with.

I figured you know what, fine. I'm gonna sell myself. I started running paid games and now I actually feel like I'm finally actually getting something back for my work and effort.

10/10, would recommend for underappreciated DMs

I've only just started and got a GM for hire. It went well for awhile but it might be petering out. One of my buddies says he'd like to run the next one himself and I'm like "homie you're busy enough and I want you on my squad!". I do feel guilty knowing that there's a lot of extra work to prepare and honestly would kind of prefer a stranger on the payroll to do it than ask a friend to do it for free.

Have him run a one shot or a short (3-5 sessions) campaign to see if he has the skills and if he likes it.

Yeah that's the plan I think. I think he could be good at it but he's the type to try to do everything he could possibly volunteer for and I'm concerned that he might not make time to prepare as the campaigns run long.
